ALICE probes of local parity violation with charge dependent azimuthal correlations in Pb-Pb collisions

We report on the measurement of two and three particle azimuthal correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV recorded with ALICE at the LHC. While two particle azimuthal correlations mainly provide an important information on possible background correlations, the three particle correlator probes the charge separation of hadrons with respect to the collision reaction plane which is expected for local parity violation in strong interactions. The two and three particle correlations are presented as a function of collision centrality and differentially vs. pseudorapidity and transverse momentum, and provide strong constraints on the possible mechanism of background (parity conserving) and signal (parity odd) effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Open heavy flavour nuclear modification factor in ALICE

The ALICE experiment has measured charm and beauty production in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 and 7 TeV and sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV, respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of hadronic D meson decays and semi-leptonic D and B meson decays. In this contribution, recent results on the nuclear modification factor for open charmed mesons and heavy-flavour decay electrons at central rapidity and muons at forward rapidity are presented and discussed.

Modeling a Realistic Dynamical Model for High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

In this article, we outline the modeling of a realistic dynamical model for comprehensive description of high energy heavy ion collisions. Comparing theoretical calculations and experimental data at RHIC, we give detailed discussions on the key ingredients for the construction of a multi-module model: initial condition, hydrodynamical expansion, hadronization, and freezeout processes.

Shielding Experiments Under JASMIN Collaboration at Fermilab(IV) - Measurement and Analyses of High-Energy Neutron Spectra in the Anti-Proton Target Station

Neutron spectra in high-energy region between 1 and 100-MeV in the shield configuration of the anti-proton target station and a 120-GeV proton beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) were determined using the reaction rate data obtained with the multi-foil activation method. Two kinds of methods were employed for the determination of neutron spectra: one is the fitting method which is newly developed in this work, another is the unfolding method with SAND-II code. The calculations were performed using the PHITS. From the comparison between the calculated and experimental neutron spectra, it concluded that the PHITS can be used for shielding design of high-energy proton accelerators.

Transverse mass spectra and scaling of hadrons at RHIC and LHC energies

We present a systematic study of transverse mass spectra ($m_T$) of mesons and baryons at RHIC and LHC energies. In an earlier study, it was shown that all the mesons produced in p+p and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV follow $m_T$ scaling while in Au+Au collisions at same energy the mesons with strange and charm quark contents do not follow $m_T$ scaling which can be attributed to medium modifications. We extend this study for baryons produced in all above colliding systems at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Although all available baryon spectra behave differently from mesons but are found to scale with protons for both p+p and d+Au collisions. In case of Au+Au collisions, the strange baryons behave differently from protons. This study has also been performed on the meson spectra in p+p collisions at 62.4 GeV which lies in between the highest RHIC energy and SPS energy where the $m_T$ scaling was first observed and we arrive at same conclusions as those at 200 GeV. We test the $m_T$ scaling at LHC with the first meson spectra measured in p+p collisions at 900 GeV and find that the $m_T$ spectra of kaons and $ϕ$ do not scale with pions. Thus $m_T$ scaling which was working well up to p+p collisions at 200 GeV seems to be broken. Here we use all data measured in the mid rapidity region. Baryon to meson ratio is studied as a function of $m_T$, at different energies and for different systems and is found that this ratio for p+p at 900 GeV is quite different from that in p+p collisions at RHIC energies.

Nuclear modification of the J/Psi transverse momentum distributions in high energy pA and AA collisions

We evaluate the transverse momentum spectrum of J/Psi (up to semi-hard momenta) in pA and AA collisions taking into account only the initial state effects, but resumming them to all orders in α_s^2 A^{1/3}. In our previous papers we noticed that cold nuclear matter effects alone could not explain the experimental data on rapidity and centrality dependencies of the J/Psi yield in AA collisions indicating the existence of an additional suppression mechanism. Our present calculations indicate that the discrepancy persists and even increases at semi-hard transverse momenta, implying a significant final state effect on J/Psi production in this kinematical domain. The QCD dipole model we employ is only marginally applicable for J/Psi production at mid-rapidity at RHIC energies but its use is justified in the forward rapidity region. At LHC energies we can quantitatively evaluate the magnitude of cold nuclear matter effects in the entire kinematical region of interest. We present our calculations of J/Psi transverse momentum spectra in pA and AA collisions at LHC and RHIC energies.

"Neutrino-4" experiment: preparations for search for sterile neutrino at 100 MW reactor SM-3 at 6-13 meters

There has been designed an experimental project "Neutrino-4" for 100 MW reactor SM-3 to test the hypothesis of the "reactor antineutrino anomaly". Advantages of the reactor SM-3 for such an experiment are low background conditions as well as small dimensions of a reactor core - 35x42x42 cm3. One has carried on the Monte-Carlo modeling of a position sensitive antineutrino detector consisting of 5 operation sections, which as a result of displacement, covers the distance from 6 to 13 meters from the reactor core. One has succeeded in obtaining an experimental area of sensitivity to oscillation parameters, which enables to verify the hypothesis of reactor antineutrino oscillations into a sterile state.

Proton-induced cross sections relevant to production of 225Ac and 223Ra in natural thorium targets below 200 MeV

Cross sections for 223,225Ra, 225Ac and 227Th production by the proton bombardment of natural thorium targets were measured at proton energies below 200 MeV. Our measurements are in good agreement with previously published data and offer a complete excitation function for 223,225Ra in the energy range above 90 MeV. Comparison of theoretical predictions with the experimental data shows reasonable-to-good agreement. Results indicate that accelerator-based production of 225Ac and 223Ra below 200 MeV is a viable production method.

Target Studies for the Production of Lithium8 for Neutrino Physics Using a Low Energy Cyclotron

Lithium 8 is a short lived beta emitter producing a high energy anti-neutrino, which is very suitable for making several measurements of fundamental quantities. It is proposed to produce Lithium 8 with a commercially available 60 MeV cyclotron using protons or alpha particles on a Beryllium 9 target. We have used the GEANT4 program to model these processes, and calculate the anti-neutrino fluxes that could be obtained in a practical system. We also calculate the production of undesirable contaminants such as Boron 8, and show that these can be reduced to a very low level.

Timelike Compton Scattering - New Theoretical Results and Experimental Possibilities

We review recent progress in the study of timelike Compton scattering (TCS), the crossed process of deeply virtual Compton scattering. We emphasize the need to include NLO corrections to any phenomenological program to extract Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) from near future experimental data. We point out that TCS at high energy should be available through a study of ultraperipheral collisions at RHIC and LHC, opening a window on quark and gluon GPDs at very small skewness.

Quark angular momentum and the Sivers asymmetry

The determination of quark angular momentum requires the knowledge of the generalized parton distribution $E$ in the forward limit. We assume a connection between this function and the Sivers transverse-momentum distribution, based on model calculations and theoretical considerations. Using this assumption, we show that it is possible to fit at the same time nucleon anomalous magnetic moments and semi-inclusive single-spin asymmetries. This imposes additional constraints on the Sivers function and opens a plausible way to quantifying the quark angular momentum.

Description of He isotopes using the particle-particle random-phase approximation model

The two-neutron RPA model has been used to describe helium isotopes with N (the neutron number) = 4, 6, 7, 8 in their ground and excited states. The properties of all these isotopes are given by a single system of equations so that their properties are interdependent. Since the ground states of $^{9}$He and $^{10}$He are still not well established, we have looked how the properties of $^{9}$He induce the properties of the other isotopes, energies and wave functions. Our results suggest an inversion of $2s$-$1p_{1/2}$ shells in $^{9}$He. The corresponding ground states of $^{9}$He and $^{10}$He are slightly unbound and respectively $1/2^+$ and $0^+$ states while the $1/2^-$ and $0^+$ seen in experiments appear to be excited states. With this assumption on $^{9}$He, we get not only a nice picture of $^{10}$He but also a very good two-neutron separation energy in $^{8}$He.

Determination of the η mass with the Crystal Ball at MAMI-B

A new precise determination of the η meson mass is presented. It is based on a measurement of the threshold for the γp -> pη reaction using the tagger focal-plane microscope detector at the MAMI-B facility in Mainz. The tagger microscope has a higher energy resolution than the standard tagging spectrometer and, hence, allowed an improvement in the accuracy compared to the previous η mass measurement at MAMI-B. The result mη = (547.851 +- 0.031 stat. +- 0.062 syst.) MeV agrees very well with the precise values of the NA48, KLOE and CLEO collaborations and deviates by about 5σ from the smaller, but also very precise value obtained by the GEM collaboration at COSY.

Perturbative versus non-perturbative aspects of jet quenching: in-medium breaking of color coherence

The quenching of jets (and high-pT particle spectra) observed in heavy-ion collisions is interpreted as due to the energy lost by hard partons crossing the Quark Gluon Plasma. Here we review recent efforts to include in its modeling important qualitative features of QCD, like the correlations in multiple gluon emissions and the color-flow pattern in parton branchings. In particular, the modification of color connections among the partons of a shower developing in the presence of a medium is a generic occurrence accompanying parton energy-loss. We show how this effect can leave its fingerprints at the hadronization stage, leading by itself to a softening of hadron spectra and to an enhanced production of soft particles in jet-fragmentation.

Clustering of Color Sources and the Equation of State of the QGP

Possible phase transition of strongly interacting matter from hadron to a quark-gluon plasma state have in the past received c onsiderable interest. It has been suggested that this problem might be treated by percolation theory. The clustering of color sources with percolation (CSPM) is used to determine the equation of state (EOS) and the transport coefficient of the Quark-Gl uon Plasma (QGP) produced in central A-A collisions at RHIC and LHC energies.

Lifetime measurements of 214Po and 212Po with the CTF liquid scintillator detector at LNGS

We have studied the alpha decays of 214Po into 210Pb and of 212Po into 208Pb tagged by the coincidence with the preceding beta decays from 214Bi and 212Bi, respectively. The employed 222Rn, 232Th, and 220Rn sources were sealed inside quartz vials and inserted in the Counting Test Facility at the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. We find that the mean lifetime of 214Po is (236.00 +- 0.42(stat) +- 0.15(syst)) μs and that of 212Po is (425.1 +- 0.9(stat) +- 1.2(syst)) ns. Our results, obtained from data with signal-to-background ratio larger than 1000, reduce the overall uncertainties and are compatible with previous measurements.
