The basis for design and manufacture of a dsp-based coincidence spectrometer

The coincidence technique and the coincidence spectroscopy have been developed and applied for over 40 years. Most of popular coincidence measurement systems were based on analog electronics techniques such as time to amplitude conversion (TAC) or logic selecting coincidence unit. The above-mentioned systems are relatively cumbersome and complicated to use. With the strong growth of digital electronics techniques and computational science, the coincidence measurement systems will be constructed simpler but more efficient with the sake of application. This article presents the design principle and signal processing of a simple two-channel coincidence system by a technique of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) devices at Nuclear Research Institute (NRI), Dalat.

Slow Control Systems of the Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation

The RENO experiment has been in operation since August 2011 to measure reactor antineutrino disappearance using identical near and far detectors. For accurate measurements of neutrino mixing parameters and efficient data taking, it is crucial to monitor and control the detector in real time. Environmental conditions also need to be monitored for stable operation of detectors as well as for safety reasons. In this article, we report the design, hardware, operation, and performance of the slow control system.

Separation of cardiac and respiratory components from the electrical bio-impedance signal using PCA and fast ICA

This paper is an attempt to separate cardiac and respiratory signals from an electrical bio-impedance (EBI) dataset. For this two well-known algorithms, namely Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA), were used to accomplish the task. The ability of the PCA and the ICA methods first reduces the dimension and attempt to separate the useful components of the EBI, the cardiac and respiratory ones accordingly. It was investigated with an assumption, that no motion artefacts are present. To carry out this procedure the two channel complex EBI measurements were provided using classical Kelvin type four electrode configurations for the each complex channel. Thus four real signals were used as inputs for the PCA and fast ICA. The results showed, that neither PCA nor ICA nor combination of them can not accurately separate the components at least are used only two complex (four real valued) input components.

Study on optimization of water Cherenkov detector array of LHAASO project for surveying VHE gamma rays sources

A water Cherenkov detector array, LHAASO-WCDA, is proposed to be built at Shangri-la, Yunnan Province, China. As one of the major components of the LHAASO project, the main purpose of it is to survey the northern sky for gamma ray sources in the energy range from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. In order to design the water Cherenkov array efficiently to economize the budget, a Monte Carlo simulation is proceeded. With the help of the simulation, cost performance of different configurations of the array is obtained and compared with each other, serving as a guide for the more detailed design of the experiment in the next step.

Software Tools for the Analysis of the Photocathode Response of Photomultiplier Vacuum Tubes

The central institute of electronics (ZEA-2) in the Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) has developed a system to scan the response of the photocathode of photomultiplier tubes (PMT). The PMT sits tight on a supporting structure, while a blue light emitting diode is moved along its surface by two stepper motors, spanning both the x and y coordinates. All the system is located in a light-tight box made by wood. A graphical software was developed in-situ to perform the scan operations under different configurations (e.g., the step size of the scan and the number of measurements per point). During each point measurement the current output generated in the vacuum photomultiplier is processed in sequence by a pre-amplifier (mainly to convert the current signal into a voltage signal), an amplifier, and by an ADC module (typically a CAEN N957). The information of the measurement is saved in files at the end of the scan. Recently, software based on the CERN ROOT and on the Qt libraries was developed to help the user analyzing deeper the data obtained by the scan. The new software, cross-platform due to its build performed inside the Qt-IDE, is described in this note.

In-Line Post-Process Scribing for Reducing Cell to Module Efficiency Gap in Monolithic Thin Film Photovoltaics

The gap between cell and module efficiency is a major challenge for all photovoltaic (PV) technologies. For monolithic thin film PV modules, a significant fraction of this gap has been attributed to parasitic shunts, and other defects, distributed across the module. In this paper, we show that it is possible to contain or isolate these shunt defects, using the state of the art laser scribing processes, after the fabrication of the series connected module is finished. We discuss three possible alternatives, and quantify the performance gains for each technique. We demonstrate that using these techniques, it is possible to recover up to 50% of the power lost to parasitic shunts, which results in 1-2% (absolute) increase in module efficiencies for typical thin film PV technologies.

Neural Dust: An Ultrasonic, Low Power Solution for Chronic Brain-Machine Interfaces

A major hurdle in brain-machine interfaces (BMI) is the lack of an implantable neural interface system that remains viable for a lifetime. This paper explores the fundamental system design trade-offs and ultimate size, power, and bandwidth scaling limits of neural recording systems built from low-power CMOS circuitry coupled with ultrasonic power delivery and backscatter communication. In particular, we propose an ultra-miniature as well as extremely compliant system that enables massive scaling in the number of neural recordings from the brain while providing a path towards truly chronic BMI. These goals are achieved via two fundamental technology innovations: 1) thousands of 10 - 100 μm scale, free-floating, independent sensor nodes, or neural dust, that detect and report local extracellular electrophysiological data, and 2) a sub-cranial interrogator that establishes power and communication links with the neural dust.

Fabrication of High Aspect Ratio Micro-Penning-Malmberg Gold Plated Silicon Trap Arrays

Acquiring a portable high density charged particles trap might consist of an array of micro-Penning-Malmberg traps (microtraps) with substantially lower end barriers potential than conventional Penning-Malmberg traps [1]. We report on the progress of the fabrication of these microtraps designed for antimatter storage such as positrons. The fabrication of large length to radius aspect ratio (1000:1) microtrap arrays involved advanced techniques including photolithography, deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) of silicon wafers to achieve through-vias, gold sputtering of the wafers on the surfaces and inside the vias, and thermal compression bonding of the wafers. This paper describes the encountered issues during fabrication and addresses geometry errors and asymmetries. In order to minimize the patch effects on the lifetime of the trapped positrons, the bonded stacks were gold electroplated to achieve a uniform gold surface. We show by simulation and analytical calculation that how positrons confinement time depends on trap imperfections.

Artifact-free data recovery system for an ASNOM application

A digital signal acquisition system for an Apertureless SNOM (ASNOM) based on a digital signal processing (DSP) card is presented. An electromagnetic wave scattered by an AFM-like tip is initially detected by an optical homodyning in a Michelson interferometer, with a homodyne phase modulation caused by a periodic travel of the reference arm mirror. Utilizing a non-linear dependency of the tip scattering amplitude on a tip-sample separation distance, the non-fundamental components of a tip oscillation frequency are recovered in optical signal within each tip oscillation period. A detected value, corresponding mostly to the near-field modes of a tip-sample electromagnetic interaction, is then averaged over all reference phases. A modular structure of the data acquisition and signal recovery program allows modify easily the modes of operation and the recovery algorithms.

Multiple Detectors for a Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Search Near Reactors

Reactor antineutrino experiments have the ability to search for neutrino oscillations independent of reactor flux predictions using a relative measurement of the neutrino flux and spectrum across a range of baselines. The range of accessible oscillation parameters are determined by the baselines of the detector arrangement. We examine the sensitivity of short-baseline experiments with more than one detector and discuss the optimization of a second, far detector. The extended reach in baselines of a 2-detector experiment will improve sensitivity to short-baseline neutrino oscillations while also increasing the ability to distinguish between 3+1 mixing and other non-standard models.

Next-Generation Liquid-Scintillator-Based Detectors: Quantums Dots and Picosecond Timing

Liquid-scintillator-based detectors are a robust technology that scales well to large volumes. For this reason, they are attractive for experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. A combination of improved photo-detection technology and novel liquid scintillators may allow for the extraction of particle direction in addition to the total energy of the particle. Such an advance would find applications beyond searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay.

New facility for the (n,2g) reaction investigation at the Dalat Reactor

The summation amplitude of coincident pulses (SACP) method which is optimal solution to reduce compton scatter phenomenon and pairs phenomenon in the gamma spectra of nuclei decay gamma cascades was used. In the 1982, in comparision with original method [1], it was improved such as the interfacing techniques, and data analysis with aid of computer [2]. In order to get better, the fast/slow coincidence spectroscopy system was developed into a fast coincidence spectroscopy. It is advantageous and easy operation. The off-line measure results with radioactive source 60-Co and on-line measure results with 35-Cl target on the tangential channel of Dalat Research Reactor were showed the good abilities of this spectroscopy system.

A short circuit in the electrical cables with polymer insulation: a new look at the cause of its occurrence and non-traditional ways of solving the problem

It is known that most of the electrical cables use as insulation compositions based on polyvinyl chloride. Like most polymers, the latter is quite sensitive to thermal aging, which is not without reason, to be one of the main causes of the various types of faults in the polymeric insulation, leading eventually to a short circuit and fire. On the example of the most common polymer insulator-PVC subjected to preliminary partial thermolysis, simulating the process of accelerated aging, we for the first time show that in this case as a result of the aging process, the electrical conductivity of PVC can acquire abnormal (not obeying Ohm's law) character. In this case, transitions from a state with normal (low) conductivity of PVC into the state with an ab-normally high conductivity was clearly observed, being spontaneous uncontrollable process. Es-pecially the large-scale nature of these changes allowing easily transferring polyvinylchloride from a state of typical dielectric (insulator) in a class of conductors attracts attention.). Thus, an-other one of the most important features of a short circuit in the PVC insulation is opened. It is noted that the reduction of fire hazards in this case (by the maximum possible elimination of the phenomenon of short circuit due to thermal aging of polymeric insulation) should be preventive in nature, as the most effective, simple and convenient way.

In-pipe leak detection by Minimum Residual complexity: A Robust time Delay Estimation method against correlated noise

In this work, the residual complexity (RC) similarity measure, is employed for time delay estimation (TDE) in gas pipe leak localization. The properties of TDE by RC is compared with those of Cross Correlation(CC) and Mutual Information(MI) similarity measures on our experimental data. The comparison confirms the advantages of RC relative to CC and MI, in robustness against both correlated noises and reduction of number of samples. These advantages originate from not only its mathematical nature of RC similarity measure which considers inter-dependency but also from broadband frequency of acoustic waves propagating during gas pipes.

The vibration research of the AC dipole-girder system for CSNS/RCS

China spallation neutron source(CSNS) is a high intensity proton accelerator based facility, and its accelerator complex includes two main parts: an H- linac and a rapid cycling synchrotron(RCS). The rcs accumulates the 80MeV proton beam, and accelerates it to 1.6GeV, with a repetition rate of 25 Hz. The AC dipole of the RCS is operated at a 25Hz sinusoidal alternating current which causes severe vibration. The vibration will influence the long-term safety and reliable operation of the magnet. The dipole magnet of RCS is active vibration equipment which is different with ground vibration accelerator. It is very important to design and research the dynamic characteristic of the dipole-girder system. This paper takes the dipole and girder as a specific model system, a method for researching the dynamic characteristic of the system is put forward by combining theoretical calculation with experimental testing. The ansys simulation method plays a very important role in the girder structure design stage. With the method the mechanical resonance phenomenon was avoided in the girder design time. At the same time the dipole vibratory force will influence the other equipment through the girder. It is necessary to isolate and decrease the dipole vibration. So a new isolator was designed to isolate the vibratory force and decrease the vibration amplitude of the magnet.
