Universal nature and finite-range corrections in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold

We investigate universal behavior in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold calculating the atom-dimer effective-range function $ak\cotδ$. Using the He-He system as a reference, we solve the Schrödinger equation for a family of potentials having different values of the two-body scattering length $a$ and we compare our results to the universal zero-range form deduced by Efimov, $ak\cotδ=c_1(ka)+c_2(ka)\cot[s_0\ln(κ_*a)+ϕ(ka)]$, for selected values of the three-body parameter $κ_*$. Using the parametrization of the universal functions $c_1,c_2,ϕ$ given in the literature, a good agreement with the universal formula is obtained after introducing a particular type of finite-range corrections. Furthermore, we show that the same parametrization describes a very different system: nucleon-deuteron scattering below the deuteron breakup threshold. Our analysis confirms the universal character of the process, and relates the pole energy in the effective-range function of nucleon-deuteron scattering to the three-body parameter $κ_*$.

Entanglement entropy and macroscopic quantum states with dipolar bosons in a triple-well potential

We study interacting dipolar atomic bosons in a triple-well potential within a ring geometry. This system is shown to be equivalent to a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. We analyze the ground state of dipolar bosons by varying the effective on-site interaction. This analysis is performed both numerically and analytically by using suitable coherent-state representations of the ground state. The latter exhibits a variety of forms ranging from the su(3) coherent state in the delocalization regime to a macroscopic cat-like state with fully localized populations, passing for a coexistence regime where the ground state displays a mixed character. We characterize the quantum correlations of the ground state from the bi-partition perspective. We calculate both numerically and analytically (within the previous coherent-state representation) the single-site entanglement entropy which, among various interesting properties, exhibits a maximum value in correspondence to the transition from the cat-like to the coexistence regime. In the latter case, we show that the ground-state mixed form corresponds, semiclassically, to an energy exhibiting two almost-degenerate minima.

Pair tunneling, phase separation and dimensional crossover in imbalanced fermionic superfluids in a coupled array of tubes

We study imbalanced fermionic superfluids in an array of one-dimensional tubes at the incipient dimensional crossover regime, wherein particles can tunnel between neighboring tubes. In addition to single-particle tunneling (ST), we consider pair tunneling (PT) that incorporates the interaction effect during the tunneling process. We find that with an increase of PT strength, a system of low global polarization evolves from a structure with a central Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state to one with a central BCS-like fully-paired state. For the case of high global polarization, the central region exhibits pairing zeros embedded in a fully paired order. In both cases, PT enhances the pairing gap, suppresses the FFLO order, and leads to spatial separation of fully paired and fully polarized regions, the same as in higher dimensions. Thus, we show that PT beyond second-order ST processes is of relevance to the development of signatures characteristic of the incipience of the dimensional crossover.

First-order superfluid-Mott-insulator transition for quantum optical switching in cavity QED arrays with two cavity modes

We theoretically investigated the ground states of coupled arrays of cavity quantum electrodynamical (cavity QED) systems in presence of two photon modes. Within the Gutzwiller-type variational approach, we found the first-order quantum phase transition between Mott insulating and superfluid phases as well as the conventional second-order one. The first-order phase transition was found only for specific types of emitter models, and its physical origin is clarified based on the analytic arguments which are allowed in the perturbative and semiclassical limits. The first-order transition of the correlated photons is accompanied with discontinuous change in the emitter states, not only with the appearance of inter-cavity coherence in the superfluid phase. We also discuss the condition for the first-order transition to occur, which can lead to a strategy for future design of quantum optical switching devices with cavity QED arrays.

Elementary excitations of ultracold soft-core bosons across the superfluid-supersolid phase transition

We investigate the zero-temperature excitation spectrum of two-dimensional soft-core bosons for a wide range parameters and across the phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid state. Based on mean field calculations and recent Quantum Monte Carlo results, we demonstrate the applicability of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, even at high interaction strengths where the system forms an insulating cluster crystal. Interestingly, our study reveals that the maximum energy of the longitudinal phonon band in the supersolid phase connects to the maxon energy of the superfluid at the phase transition.

Cooperative Fluorescence from a Strongly Driven Dilute Cloud of Atoms

We investigate cooperative fluorescence in a dilute cloud of strongly driven two-level emitters. Starting from the Heisenberg equations of motion, we compute the first-order scattering corrections to the saturation of the excited-state population and to the resonance-fluorescence spectrum, which both require going beyond the state-of-the-art linear-optics approach to describe collective phenomena. A dipole blockade is observed due to long range dipole-dipole coupling that vanishes at stronger driving fields. Furthermore, we compute the inelastic component of the light scattered by a cloud of many atoms and find that the Mollow triplet is affected by cooperativity. In a lobe around the forward direction, the inelastic Mollow triplet develops a spectral asymmetry, observable under experimental conditions.

Single-Particle Momentum Distributions of Efimov States in Mixed-Species Systems

We solve the three-body bound state problem in three dimensions for mass imbalanced systems of two identical bosons and a third particle in the universal limit where the interactions are assumed to be of zero-range. The system displays the Efimov effect and we use the momentum-space wave equation to derive formulas for the scaling factor of the Efimov spectrum for any mass ratio assuming either that two or three of the two-body subsystems have a bound state at zero energy. We consider the single-particle momentum distribution analytically and numerically and analyse the tail of the momentum distribution to obtain the three-body contact parameter. Our finding demonstrate that the functional form of the three-body contact term depends on the mass ratio and we obtain an analytic expression for this behavior. To exemplify our results, we consider mixtures of Lithium with either two Caesium or Rubium atoms which are systems of current experimental interest.

Λ-enhanced Sub-Doppler Cooling of Lithium Atoms in D1 Gray Molasses

Following the bichromatic sub-Doppler cooling scheme on the D1 line of 40K recently demonstrated in (Fernandes et al. 2012), we introduce a similar technique for 7Li atoms and obtain temperatures of 60 uK while capturing all of the 5x10^8 atoms present from the previous stage. We investigate the influence of the detuning between the the two cooling frequencies and observe a threefold decrease of the temperature when the Raman condition is fulfilled. We interpret this effect as arising from extra cooling due to long-lived coherences between hyperfine states. Solving the optical Bloch equations for a simplified, Λ-type three-level system we identify the presence of an efficient cooling force near the Raman condition. After transfer into a quadrupole magnetic trap, we measure a phase space density of ~10^-5. This laser cooling offers a promising route for fast evaporation of lithium atoms to quantum degeneracy in optical or magnetic traps.

Non-adiabatic many-atom quantum state control in few-well systems

We present a fast scheme for arbitrary unitary control of interacting bosonic atoms in a double-well. Assuming fixed inter-well tunnelling rate and intra-well interaction strength, we control the many-atom state by a discrete sequence of shifts of the single-well energies. For strong interactions, resonant tunnelling transitions implement beam-splitter U(2) rotations among atom number eigenstates, which can be combined and, thus, permit full controllability. By numerically optimizing such sequences of couplings at avoided level crossings (CALC), we extend the realm of full controllability to a wide range of realistic interaction parameters, while we remain in the simple control space. We demonstrate the efficiency and the high achievable fidelity of our proposal with non-adiabatic population transfer, N00N-state creation, a C-NOT gate, and a transistor-like, conditional evolution of several atoms.

Pseudogap Effects of Fermi Gases in the Presence of A Strong Effective Magnetic Field

We address the important question of how to characterize the normal state of fermionic superfluids under the influence of a strong effective magnetic field, implemented through rapid rotation or novel artificial field techniques. We consider the effects of crossing from BCS to BEC and the role of non-condensed pairs, or pseudogap effects. Using a simple extension of Gor'kov theory we demonstrate how these pairs organize above the transition $T_c$ into precursors of a vortex configuration, which are associated with distortions of the ideal Abrikosov lattice. This non-uniform normal state appears to enable "Bose condensation" in a field which is otherwise problematic due to the effective one-dimensionality of Landau level dispersion.

Orbital phases of fermions in an asymmetric optical ladder

We study a quantum ladder of interacting fermions with coupled s and p orbitals. Such a model describes dipolar molecules or atoms loaded into a double-well optical lattice, dipole moments being aligned by an external field. The two orbital components have distinct hoppings. The tunneling between them is equivalent to a partial Rashba spin-orbital coupling when the orbital space (s, p) is identified as spanned by pseudo-spin 1/2 states. A rich phase diagram, including incommensurate orbital density wave, pair density wave and other exotic superconducting phases, is proposed with bosonization analysis. In particular, superconductivity is found in the repulsive regime.

Exotic pairing states in a Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

We investigate properties of exotic pairing states in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. The interplay of spin-orbit coupling, effective Zeeman field and pairing can lead to first-order phase transitions between different phases, and to interesting nodal superfluid states with gapless surfaces in the momentum space. We then demonstrate that pairing states with zero center-of-mass momentum are unstable against finite center-of-mass momentum Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, with the center-of-mass momentum of the pairs opposite to the direction of the effective Zeeman field. Unlike conventional FFLO states, these FFLO states are induced by the coexistence of spin-orbit coupling and Fermi surface deformation, and have intriguing features like first-order transitions between different FFLO states, nodal FFLO states with gapless surfaces in momentum space, and exotic fully gapped FFLO states. With the recent theoretical proposals for realizing three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atom gases, our work is helpful for the future experimental studies, and provides valuable information for the general understanding of pairing physics in spin-orbit coupled fermionic systems.

Supercurrent and dynamical instability of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold Bose gases

We investigate the stability of supercurrents in a Bose-Einstein condensate with one-dimensional spin-orbit and Raman couplings. The consequence of the lack of Galilean invariance is explicitly discussed. We show that in the plane-wave phase, characterized by a uniform density, the supercurrent state can become dynamically unstable, the instability being associated with the occurrence of a complex sound velocity, in a region where the effective mass is negative. We also discuss the emergence of energetic instability in these supercurrent states. We argue that both the dynamical and the energetic instabilities in these systems can be generated experimentally through excitation of the collective dipole oscillation.

Condensation and quasicondensation in an elongated three-dimensional Bose gas

We study the equilibrium correlations of a Bose gas in an elongated three-dimensional harmonic trap using a grand-canonical classical-field method. We focus in particular on the progressive transformation of the gas from the normal phase, through a phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime to the so-called true-condensate regime, with decreasing temperature. Choosing realistic experimental parameters, we quantify the density fluctuations and phase coherence of the atomic field as functions of the system temperature. We identify the onset of Bose condensation through analysis of both the generalized Binder cumulant appropriate to the inhomogeneous system, and the suppression of the effective many-body T matrix that characterizes interactions between condensate atoms in the finite-temperature field. We find that the system undergoes a second-order transition to condensation near the critical temperature for an ideal Bose gas in the strongly anisotropic three-dimensional geometry, but remains in a strongly phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime until significantly lower temperatures. We characterize the crossover from a quasicondensate to a true condensate by a qualitative change in the form of the non-local first-order coherence function of the field, and compare our results to those of previous works employing a density-phase Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis.

Generalized Effective Potential Landau Theory for Bosonic Quadratic Superlattices

We study the properties of the Bose-Hubbard model for a quadratic optical superlattice. To this end we generalize a recently established effective potential Landau theory for a single component to the case of multi components and find not only the characteristic incompressible solid phases with fractional filling, but also obtain the underlying quantum phase diagram in the whole parameter region at zero temperature. Comparing our analytic results with corresponding ones from quantum Monte Carlo simulations demonstrates the high accuracy of the generalized effective potential Landau theory (GEPLT). Finally, we comment on the advantages and disadvantages of the GEPLT in view of a direct comparison with a corresponding decoupled mean-field theory.

Numerical study of unitary fermions in one spatial dimension

I perform lattice Monte Carlo studies of universal four-component fermion systems in one spatial dimension. Continuum few-body observables (i.e., ground-state energies and integrated contact densities) are determined for both unpolarized and polarized systems of up to eight fermions confined to a harmonic trap. Estimates of the continuum energies for four and five trapped fermions show agreement with exact analytic calculations to within approximately one percent statistical uncertainties. Continuum many-body observables are determined for unpolarized systems of up to 88 fermions confined to a finite box, and 56 fermions confined to a harmonic trap. Results are reported for universal quantities such as the Bertsch parameter, defined as the energy of the untrapped many-body system in units of the corresponding free-gas energy, and its subleading correction at large but finite scattering length. Two independent estimates of these quantities are obtained from thermodynamic limit extrapolations of continuum extrapolated observables. A third estimate of the Bertsch parameter is obtained by combining estimates of the untrapped and trapped integrated contact densities with additional theoretical input from a calculation based on Thomas-Fermi theory. All estimates of the Bertsch parameter and its subleading correction are found to be consistent to within approximately one percent statistical uncertainties. Finally, the continuum restoration of virial theorems is verified for both few- and many-body systems confined to a trap.

Dynamic Phase Diagram for the Quantum Phase Model

We address the stability of superfluid currents in a system of interacting lattice bosons. We consider various Gutzwiller trial states for the quantum phase model which provides a good approximation for the Bose-Hubbard model in the limit of large interactions and boson populations. We thoroughly analyze the current-carrying stationary states of the dynamics ensuing from a Gaussian ansatz, and derive analytical results for the critical lines signaling their modulational and energetic instability, as well as the maximum of the carried current. We show that these analytical results are in good qualitative agreement with those obtained numerically in previous works on the Bose-Hubbard model, and in the present work for the quantum phase model.

Dicke Quantum Spin and Photon Glass in Optical Cavities: Non-equilibrium theory and experimental signatures

In the context of ultracold atoms in multimode optical cavities, the appearance of a quantum-critical glass phase of atomic spins has been predicted recently. Due to the long-range nature of the cavity-mediated interactions, but also the presence of a driving laser and dissipative processes such as cavity photon loss, the quantum optical realization of glassy physics has no analog in condensed matter, and could evolve into a "cavity glass microscope" for frustrated quantum systems out-of-equilibrium. Here we develop the non-equilibrium theory of the multimode Dicke model with quenched disorder and Markovian dissipation. Using a unified Keldysh path integral approach, we show that the defining features of a low temperature glass, representing a critical phase of matter with algebraically decaying temporal correlation functions, are seen to be robust against the presence of dissipation due to cavity loss. The universality class however is modified due to the Markovian bath. The presence of strong disorder leads to an enhanced equilibration of atomic and photonic degrees of freedom, including the emergence of a common low-frequency effective temperature. The imprint of the atomic spin glass physics onto a "photon glass" makes it possible to detect the glass state by standard experimental techniques of quantum optics. We provide an unambiguous characterization of the superradiant and glassy phases in terms of fluorescence spectroscopy, homodyne detection, and the temporal photon correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)$.
