Colored dark matter

The idea is considered that a classical non-Abelian gauge field can be considered as a dark matter candidate. It is shown that Yang-Mills equations have solutions with such distribution of the mass density that allows to describe a rotational curve of spiral galaxies. The conditions necessary for such consideration are considered. One parameter is estimated from Yang-Mills equations and from astrophysical observations (stars rotation curve). The agreement is to within 1%.

Hot Jupiters and Central Cavities of Protoplanetary Discs

We investigate numerically the orbital evolution of massive extrasolar planets within central cavities of their parent protoplanetary discs. Assuming that they arrive at the inner edge of the disc due to type II migration, we show that they spiral further in. We find that in magnetospheric cavities more massive planets stop migrating at a larger distance from the edge of the disc. This effect may qualitatively explain the correlation between masses and orbital periods found for massive planets with P shorter than 5 days.

Tidal dynamics of extended bodies in planetary systems and multiple stars

With the discovery during the past decade of a large number of extrasolar planets orbiting their parent stars at a distance lower than 0.1 astronomical unit (and the launch and the preparation of dedicated space missions such as CoRoT and KEPLER), with the position of inner natural satellites around giant planets in our Solar System and with the existence of very closed but separated binary stars, tidal interaction has to be carefully studied. In particular, a question arises about the validity of usual approximations used in the modelling of this interaction. The purpose of this paper is to examine the step beyond the ponctual approximation for the tidal perturber. To achieve this aim, the gravitational interaction between two extended bodies and more precisely the interaction between mass multipole moments of their gravitational fields and the associated tidal phenomena are studied. Use of Cartesian Symmetric Trace Free (STF) tensors, of their relation with spherical harmonics and of the Kaula's transform enables to derive analytically the tidal and mutual interaction potentials as well as the associated disturbing functions in extended bodies systems. The tidal and mutual interaction potentials of two extended bodies are derived. Next, the external gravitational potential of such tidally disturbed extended body is obtained, using the Love's number theory, as well as the associated disturbing function. Finally, the dynamical evolution equations for such systems are given in their more general form without any linearization. The dynamical equations for the gravitational and tidal interactions between extended bodies and associated dynamics are derived in a form where they could be directly implemented to perform coherent numerical simulations of planetary systems or multiple stars tidal evolution.

From Big Crunch to Big Bang with AdS/CFT

The AdS/CFT correspondence is used to describe five-dimensional cosmology with a big crunch singularity in terms of super-Yang-Mills theory on R times S^3 deformed by a potential which is unbounded below. Classically, a Higgs field in the dual theory rolls to infinity in finite time. But since the S^3 is finite, the unstable mode spreads quantum mechanically and the singularity is resolved when self-adjoint boundary conditions are imposed at infinity. Asymptotic freedom of the coupling governing the instability gives us computational control and the quantum spreading provides a UV cutoff on particle creation. The bulk interpretation of our result is a quantum transition from a big crunch to a big bang. An intriguing consequence of the near scale-invariance of the dual theory is that a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of stress-energy perturbations is automatically generated in the boundary theory. We comment on implications for more realistic cosmologies.

Configuration studies for a cubic-kilometre deep-sea neutrino telescope - KM3NeT - with NESSY, a fast and flexible approach

Theoretical predictions for neutrino fluxes indicate that km$^{3}$ scale detectors are needed to detect certain astrophysical sources. The three Mediterranean experiments, ANTARES, NEMO and NESTOR are working together on a design study, KM3NeT, for a large deep-sea neutrino telescope. A detector placed in the Mediterranean Sea will survey a large part of the Galactic disc, including the Galactic Centre. It will complement the IceCube telescope currently under construction at the South Pole. Furthermore, the improved optical properties of sea water, compared to Antarctic ice, will allow a better angular resolution and hence better background rejection. The main work presented in this paper is to evaluate different km$^{3}$ scale detector geometries in order to optimize the muon neutrino sensitivity between 1 and 100 TeV. For this purpose, we have developed a detailed simulation based on the {\it Mathematica} software - for the muon track production, the light transmission in water, the environmental background and the detector response. To compare different geometries, we have mainly used the effective neutrino area obtained after the full standard reconstruction chain.}

Sensitivity studies for the cubic-kilometre deep-sea neutrino telescope KM3NeT

The observation of high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources would substantially improve our knowledge and understanding of the non-thermal processes in these sources, and would in particular pinpoint the accelerators of cosmic rays. The sensitivity of different design options for a future cubic-kilometre scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea is investigated for generic point sources and in particular for some of the galactic objects from which TeV gamma emmission has recently been observed by the H.E.S.S. atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. The effect of atmospheric background on the source detection probabilities has been taken into account through full simulation. The estimated event rates are compared to previous results and limits from present neutrino telescopes.

Radiative Transfer in Special Relativity: Covariance

The purpose is to introduce in a clear and direct way the students of undergraduate courses in physics and/or astronomy to the subject of radiative transfer. A pedagogical revision is made in order to obtain the radiative transfer equation, its restrictions and the different types of interactions present between the radiation and the matter. Because in the classical literature about radiative transfer the covariance is not fully developed, we show in an explicit manner detail calculations and then we discuss the relativistic effects.

Calibration systems and methods for the ANTARES neutrino telescope

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is currently being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea. The complete detector will consist of 12 strings, supplemented by an additional instrumentation line. Nine strings are at present deployed of which five are already connected to the shore and operating. Each string is equipped with 75 Optical Modules (OMs) housing the photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by the charged particles produced in neutrino reactions. An accurate measurement of the Cherenkov photon arrival times as well as the positions and orientations of the OMs is required for a precise reconstruction of the direction of the detected neutrinos. For this purpose the ANTARES detector is provided with several system s to facilitate the calibration of the detector. The time calibration is performed using light pulses emitted from LED and laser devices. The positioning is done via acoustic triangulation using hydrophones. Additionally, local tilt angles and the orientations of the modules are measured with a set of tiltmeters and compasses. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the ANTARES time and alignment calibration systems operate successfully in situ. In particular, it is shown that the ANTARES read-out electronics is capable of reaching a sub-nanosecond time resolution.

The Distance of 4 kpc to the SNR CTB 109/AXP 1E 2259+586 system

We suggest a revised distance to the supernova remnant (SNR) G109.1-1.0 (CTB 109) and its associated anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586 by analyzing 21cm HI-line and 12CO-line spectra of CTB 109, HII region Sh 152, and the adjacent molecular cloud complex. CTB 109 has been established to be interacting with a large molecular cloud (recession velocity at v=-55 km s^-1). The highest radial velocities of absorption features towards CTB 109 (-56 km s^-1) and Sh 152 (-65 km s^-1) are larger than the recombination line velocity (-50 km s^-1) of Sh 152 demonstrating the velocity reversal within the Perseus arm. The molecular cloud has cold HI column density large enough to produce HI self-absorption (HISA) and HI narrow self-absorption (HINSA) if it was at the near side of the velocity reversal. Absence of both HISA and HINSA indicates that the cloud is at the far side of the velocity reversal within the Perseus Arm, so we obtain a distance for CTB 109 of 4+/-0.8 kpc. The new distance still leads to a normal explosion energy for CTB 109/AXP 1E 2259+586.

Isotopic Anomalies in CP Stars: Helium, Mercury, Platinum, and Calcium

We review the classical observational results for isotopic abundance variations for several elements in CP stars. We concentrate on the "newest" anomaly, in calcium. The cosmically very rare isotope, Ca-48 can rival and even dominate the more common, alpha nuclide, Ca-40. Relevant examples are found in the hot, non-magnetic HgMn stars, and the field horizontal-branch star, Feige 86. The calcium anomaly is also present in cool, magnetic stars, including the notorious HD 101065, Przybylski's star.

Remote Sensing of Chromospheric Magnetic Fields via the Hanle and Zeeman Effects

The only way to obtain reliable empirical information on the intensity and topology of the weak magnetic fields of the quiet solar chromosphere is via the measurement and rigorous physical interpretation of polarization signals in chromospheric spectral lines. The observed Stokes profiles reported here are due to the Hanle and Zeeman effects operating in a weakly magnetized plasma that is in a state far from local thermodynamic equilibrium. The physical origin of their enigmatic linear polarization Q and U components is the existence of atomic polarization in their metastable lower-levels, which permits the action of a dichroism mechanism that has nothing to do with the transverse Zeeman effect. It is also pointed out that the population imbalances and coherences among the Zeeman sublevels of such long-lived atomic levels can survive in the presence of horizontal magnetic fields having intensities in the gauss range, and produce significant polarization signals. Finally, it is shown how the most recent developments in the observation and theoretical modelling of weak polarization signals are facilitating fundamental new advances in our ability to investigate the magnetism of the outer solar atmosphere via spectropolarimetry.

Constraining MOND with Solar System dynamics

In this letter we investigate the deep Newtonian regime of the MOND paradigm from a purely phenomenological point of view by exploiting the least-square estimated corrections to the secular rates of the perihelia of the inner and of some of the outer planets of the Solar System by E.V. Pitjeva with the EPM2004 ephemerides. By using $μ(x)\approx 1-k_0(1/x)^n$ for the interpolating MONDian function, and by assuming that $k_0$, considered body-independent so to avoid violations of the equivalence principle, experiences no spatial variations throughout the Solar System we tightly constrain $n$ with the ratios of the perihelion precessions for different pairs of planets. We find that the range $1\leq n\leq 2$ is neatly excluded at much more than $3-σ$ level. Such a test would greatly benefit from the use of extra-precessions of perihelia independently estimated by other groups as well.

Primordial Non-Gaussianity in Multi-Scalar Inflation

We give a concise formula for the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation generated on super-horizon scales in multi-scalar inflation model without assuming slow-roll conditions. This is an extension of our previous work. Using this formula, we study the generation of non-Gaussianity for the double inflation models in which the slow-roll conditions are temporarily violated after horizon exit, and we show that the non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$ for such models is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters evaluated at the time of horizon exit.

The BVRI Light Curves And Period Analysis Of The Beta Lyrae System XX Leonis

The contact eclipsing binary system XX Leonis (P = 0.97 days, sp A8) has been analysed using the PHOEBE programme, based on the Wilson Devinney code. The BVRI light curves were obtained during spring 2006 using the 20-cm telescope and ST-7 CCD detector. The effective temperature of the primary component determined from the photometric analysis is T=(7889+/-61)K, the inclination of the orbit is i=(89.98+/-2.45)deg and the photometric mass ratio q=(0.41+/-0.01). Also the third body hypothesis was suggested, based on the period analysis using 57 minimum times and resulting the period of the third body p3= (52.96+/-0.01)yr, amplitude A=(0.057+/-0.029)d and eccentricity e=(0.79+/-0.08) which gives the minimum mass m3,min=(3.6+/-0.8)M_sun.

Gravitational Softening and Adaptive Mass Resolution

Pairwise forces between particles in cosmological N-body simulations are generally softened to avoid hard collisions. Physically, this softening corresponds to treating the particles as diffuse clouds rather than point masses. For particles of unequal mass (and hence unequal softening length), computing the softened force involves a nontrivial double integral over the volumes of the two particles. We show that Plummer force softening is consistent with this interpretation of softening while spline softening is not. We provide closed-form expressions and numerical implementation for pairwise gravitational force laws for pairs of particles of general softening scales $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ assuming the commonly used cloud profiles: NGP, CIC, TSC, and PQS. Similarly, we generalize Plummer force law into pairs of particles of general softenings. We relate our expressions to the gaussian, Plummer and spline force softenings known from literature. Our expressions allow possible inclusions of pointlike particles such as stars or supermassive black holes.

Dark Energy and Structure Formation: Connecting the Galactic and Cosmological Length Scales

On the cosmological length scale, recent measurements by WMAP have validated $Λ$CDM to a precision not see before in cosmology. Such is not the case on galactic length scales, however, where the `cuspy-core' problem has demonstrated our lack of understanding of structure formation. Here, we propose a solution to the 'cuspy-core' problem based on the observation that with the discovery of Dark Energy, $Λ_{DE}$, there is now a universal length scale, $λ_{DE}=c/(Λ_{DE} G)^{1/2}$, associated with the universe. This length scale allows for an extension of the geodesic equations of motion that affects only the motion of massive test particles; the motion of massless test particles are not affected, and such phenomenon as gravitational lensing remain unchanged. An evolution equation for the density profile is derived, and an effective free energy density functional for it is constructed. We conjecture that the pseudoisothermal profile is preferred over the cusp-like profile because it has a lower effective free energy. A cosmological check of the theory is made using the observed rotational velocities and core sizes of 1393 spiral galaxies. We calculate $σ_8$ to be $0.68_{\pm0.11}$; this is within experimental error of the WMAP value $0.761_{-0.048}^{+0.049}$. We then calculate $R_{200}=270_{\pm 130}$ kpc, which is in agreement with observations. We estimate the fractional density of matter that cannot be determined through gravity to be $0.197_{\pm 0.017}$; this is nearly equal to the WMAP value for the fractional density of nonbaryonic matter $0.196^{+0.025}_{-0.026}$. The fractional density of matter that can be determined through gravity is then calculated to be $0.041_{-0.031}^{+0.030}$; this is nearly equal to $Ω_B=0.0416_{-0.0039}^{+0.0038}$.

In defense of local textures (and other Higgs gradients)

Cruz et al. recently showed that the CMB cold spot can be explained by a GUT-scale texture. But following Turok's argument that gauged configurations always relax quickly, they posit a global symmetry, without obvious relation to GUTs. An observation by Nambu invalidates Turok's argument when the broken symmetry group has commuting generators. This is demonstrated explicitly in the standard model of electroweak interactions and holds generally for intermediate SSB stages in GUTs. The cold spot could therefore be due to a GUT texture, and electroweak Higgs gradients may evolve indefinitely.
