Spontaneous ferromagnetism in the spinor Bose gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We show that in the two-component Bose gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling an arbitrarily small attractive interaction between bosons with opposite spin induces spontaneous ferromagnetism below a finite critical temperature $T_c$. In the ferromagnetic phase the single-particle spectrum exhibits a unique minimum in momentum space in the direction of the magnetization. For sufficiently small temperatures below $T_c$ the bosons eventually condense into the unique state at the bottom of the spectrum, forming a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate.

Topological superfluid phases of an atomic Fermi gas with in- and out-of-plane Zeeman fields and equal Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling

We analyze the effects of in- and out-of-plane Zeeman fields on the BCS-BEC evolution of a Fermi gas with equal Rashba-Dresselhaus (ERD) spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the ground state of the system involves novel gapless superfluid phases that can be distinguished with respect to the topology of the momentum-space regions with zero excitation energy. For the BCS-like uniform superfluid phases with zero center-of-mass momentum, the zeros may correspond to one or two doubly-degenerate spheres, two or four spheres, two or four concave spheroids, or one or two doubly-degenerate circles, depending on the combination of Zeeman fields and SOC. Such changes in the topology signal a quantum phase transition between distinct superfluid phases, and leave their signatures on some thermodynamic quantities. We also analyze the possibility of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like nonuniform superfluid phases with finite center-of-mass momentum and obtain an even richer phase diagram.

Atomic spin-orbit coupling synthesized with magnetic-field-gradient pulses

We discuss a general scheme for creating atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) such as the Rashba or Dresselhaus types using magnetic-field-gradient pulses. In contrast to conventional schemes based on adiabatic center-of-mass motion with atomic internal states restricted to a dressed-state subspace, our scheme works for the complete subspace of a hyperfine-spin manifold by utilizing the coupling between the atomic magnetic moment and external magnetic fields. A spatially dependent pulsed magnetic field acts as an internal-state-dependent impulse, thereby coupling the atomic internal spin with its orbital center-of-mass motion, as in the Einstein-de Haas effect. This effective coupling can be dynamically manipulated to synthesize SOC of any type (Rashba, Dresselhaus, or any linear combination thereof). Our scheme can be realized with most experimental setups of ultracold atoms and is especially suited for atoms with zero nuclear spins.

Sensitivity to thermal noise of atomic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement

We examine the prospect of demonstrating Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement for massive particles using spin-changing collisions in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Such a demonstration has recently been attempted by Gross et al. [Nature 480, 219 (2011)] using a condensate of Rb-87 atoms trapped in an optical lattice potential. For the condensate initially prepared in the (F,m_{F})=(2,0) hyperfine state, with no population in the m_{F}=+-1 states, we predict a significant suppression of the product of inferred quadrature variances below the Heisenberg uncertainty limit, implying strong EPR entanglement. However, such EPR entanglement is lost when the collisions are initiated in the presence of a small (currently undetectable) thermal population n_{th} in the m_{F}=+-1 states. For condensates containing 150 to 200 atoms, we predict an upper bound of n_{th}~1 that can be tolerated in this experiment before EPR entanglement is lost.

Exploring exchange mechanisms with a cold atom gas

Fermionic atoms trapped in a double well potential are an ideal setting to study fundamental exchange mechanisms. We use exact diagonalization and complementary analytic calculations to demonstrate that two trapped fermions deliver a minimal model of the direct exchange mechanism. This is an ideal quantum simulator of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet, exposes the competition between covalent and ionic bonding, and can create, manipulate, and detect quantum entanglement. Three trapped atoms form a faithful simulator of the double exchange mechanism that is the fundamental building block behind many Heisenberg ferromagnets.

Fermionic shock waves - dissipative or dispersive?

The collision of two clouds of Fermi gas at unitarity (UFG) has been recently observed to lead to shock waves whose regularization mechanism, dissipative or dispersive, is being debated. While classical, dissipative shocks, as in gas dynamics, develop a steep, localized shock front that translates at a well-defined speed, dispersively regularized shocks are distinguished by an expanding region of short wavelength oscillations with two speeds, those of the leading and trailing edges. For typical UFG experimental conditions, the theoretical oscillation length scale is smaller than the resolution of present imaging systems so it is unclear how to determine the shock type from its structure alone. Two experimental methods to determine the appropriate regularization mechanism are proposed: measurement of the shock speed and observation of a one-dimensional collision experiment with sufficiently tight radial confinement.

Persistent currents in a bosonic mixture in the ring geometry

In this paper we analyze the possibility of persistent currents of a two-species bosonic mixture in the one-dimensional ring geometry. We extend the arguments used by Bloch to obtain a criterion for the stability of persistent currents for the two-species system. If the mass ratio of the two species is a rational number, persistent currents can be stable at multiples of a certain total angular momenta. We show that the Bloch criterion can also be viewed as a Landau criterion involving the elementary excitations of the system. Our analysis reveals that persistent currents at higher angular momenta are more stable for the two-species system than previously thought.

Spin-orbit-induced bound state and molecular signature of the degenerate Fermi gas in a narrow Feshbach resonance

In this paper we explore the spin-orbit-induced bound state and molecular signature of the degenerate Fermi gas in a narrow Feshbach resonance based on a generalized two-channel model. Without the atom-atom interactions, only one bound state can be found even if spin-orbit coupling exists. Moreover, the corresponding bound-state energy depends strongly on the strength of spin-orbit coupling, but is influenced slightly by its type. In addition, we find that when increasing the strength of spin-orbit coupling, the critical point at which the molecular fraction vanishes shifts from zero to the negative detuning. In the weak spin-orbit coupling, this shifting is proportional to the square of its strength. Finally, we also show that the molecular fraction can be well controlled by spin-orbit coupling.

Superfluid and magnetic states of an ultracold Bose gas with synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in an optical lattice

We study ultracold bosonic atoms with the synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a cubic optical lattice. In the superfluidity phase, the lowest energy band exhibits one, two or four pairs of degenerate single-particle ground states depending on the SO-coupling strengths, which can give rise to the condensate states with spin-stripes for the weak atomic interactions. In the deep Mott-insulator regime, the effective spin Hamiltonian of the system combines three-dimensional Heisenberg exchange interactions, anisotropy interactions and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically demonstrate that the resulting Hamiltonian with an additional Zeeman field has a rich phase diagram with spiral, stripe, vortex crystal, and especially Skyrmion crystal spin-textures in each xy-plane layer. The obtained Skyrmion crystals can be tunable with square and hexagonal symmetries in a columnar manner along the z axis, and moreover are stable against the inter-layer spin-spin interactions in a large parameter region.

Tradeoffs for number-squeezing in collisions of Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the factors that influence the usefulness of supersonic collisions of Bose-Einstein condensates as a potential source of entangled atomic pairs by analyzing the reduction of the number difference fluctuations between regions of opposite momenta. We show that non-monochromaticity of the mother clouds is typically the leading limitation on number squeezing, and that the squeezing becomes less robust to this effect as the density of pairs grows. We develop a simple model that explains the relationship between density correlations and the number squeezing, allows one to estimate the squeezing from properties of the correlation peaks, and shows how the multi-mode nature of the scattering must be taken into account to understand the behavior of the pairing. We analyze the impact of the Bose enhancement on the number squeezing, by introducing a simplified low-gain model. We conclude that as far as squeezing is concerned the preferable configuration occurs when atoms are scattered not uniformly but rather into two well separated regions.

Superpositions in Atomic Quantum Rings

Ultracold atoms are trapped circumferentially on a ring that is pierced at its center by a flux tube arising from a light-induced gauge potential due to applied Laguerre-Gaussian fields. We show that by using optical coherent state superpositions to produce light-induced gauge potentials, we can create a situation in which the trapped atoms are simultaneously exposed to two distinct flux tubes, thereby creating superpositions in atomic quantum rings. We consider the examples of both a ring geometry and harmonic trapping, and in both cases the ground state of the quantum system is shown to be a superposition of counter-rotating states of the atom trapped on the two distinct flux tubes.

Roton confinement in trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Roton excitations constitute a key feature of dipolar gases, connecting these gases with superfluid helium. We show that the density dependence of the roton minimum results in a spatial roton confinement, particularly relevant in pancake dipolar condensates with large aspect ratios. We show that roton confinement plays a crucial role in the dynamics after roton instability, and that arresting the instability may create a trapped roton gas revealed by confined density modulations. We discuss the local susceptibility against density perturbations, which we illustrate for the case of vortices. Roton confinement is expected to play a key role in experiments.

Wall-vortex composite solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study composite solitons, consisting of domain walls and vortex lines attaching to the walls in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When the total density of two components is homogeneous, the system can be mapped to the O(3) nonlinear sigma model for the pseudospin representing the two-component order parameter and the analytical solutions of the composite solitons can be obtained. Based on the analytical solutions, we discuss the detailed structure of the composite solitons in two-component condensates by employing the generalized nonlinear sigma model, where all degrees of freedom of the original Gross-Pitaevskii theory are active. The density inhomogeneity results in reduction of the domain wall tension from that in the sigma model limit. We find that the domain wall pulled by a vortex is logarithmically bent as a membrane pulled by a pin, and it bends more flexibly than not only the domain wall in the sigma model but also the expectation from the reduced tension. Finally, we study the composite soliton structure for actual experimental situations with trapped immiscible condensates under rotation through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Gauge-spin-space rotation invariant vortices in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We revisit ground states of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that votices show up as a direct consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking into a combined gauge, spin, and space rotation symmetry, which determines the vortex-core spin state at the rotating center. For the continuous combined symmetry, the total spin rotation about the rotating axis is restricted to $2π$, whereas for the discrete combined symmetry, we further need 2F quantum numbers to characterize the total spin rotation for the spin-$F$ system. For lattice phases we find that in the ground state the topological charge for each unit cell vanishes. However, we find two types of highly symmetric lattices with a nontrivial topological charge in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system based on the symmetry classification, and show that they are skyrmion crystals.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates in Weak Anisotropic Disorder

Here we study properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a weak anisotropic random potential with Lorentzian correlation at zero temperature. To this end we solve perturbatively the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to second order in the random potential strength and obtain analytic results for the disorder ensemble averages of both the condensate and the superfluid depletion, the equation of state, and the sound velocity. For a pure contact interaction and a vanishing correlation length, we reproduce the seminal results of Huang and Meng, which were originally derived within a Bogoliubov theory around a disorder-averaged background field. For dipolar interaction and isotropic Lorentzian-correlated disorder, we obtain results which are qualitatively similar to the case of an isotropic Gaussian-correlated disorder. In the case of an anisotropic disorder, the physical observables show characteristic anisotropies which arise from the formation of fragmented dipolar condensates in the local minima of the disorder potential.

Dynamical generation of interwoven soliton trains by nonlinear emission in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method for the generation of trains of alternating bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, using controlled emission of nonlinear matter-waves in the uncoupled regime with spatially-varying intra-species interaction and out-of-phase oscillations of the ground states in the trap. Under this scheme, solitons are sequentially launched from the different components, and interact with each other through phase-independent cross-coupling. We obtain an analytical estimation of the critical condition for soliton emission using a geometric guiding model, in analogy with integrated optical systems. In addition, we show how strong initial perturbations in the system can trigger the spontaneous generation of supersolitons, i.e. localized phonon-like excitations of the soliton trains. Finally, we demonstrate the controllable generation of slow and fast supersolitons by adding external localized potentials in the nonlinear region.

Spin-orbit coupling induced Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like Cooper pairing and skyrmion-like polarization textures in trapped optical lattices

We study the interplay between the Zeeman field and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in harmonically trapped Fermi gases loaded into a two-dimensional single-band tight-binding optical lattice. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we find that the Zeeman field combined with a Rashba SOC gives rise to $(i)$ Fulde-Ferrell-like superfluidity and $(ii)$ skyrmion-like polarization textures near the edges of the system. We also discussed the effects of interaction, temperature, SOC anisotropy and Zeeman field anisotropy on the superfluid ground state and polarization textures.

Dynamical tunnelling with ultracold atoms in magnetic microtraps

The study of dynamical tunnelling in a periodically driven anharmonic potential probes the quantum-classical transition via the experimental control of the effective Planck's constant for the system. In this paper we consider the prospects for observing dynamical tunnelling with ultracold atoms in magnetic microtraps on atom chips. We outline the driven anharmonic potentials that are possible using standard magnetic traps, and find the Floquet spectrum for one of these as a function of the potential strength, modulation, and effective Planck's constant. We develop an integrable approximation to the non-integrable Hamiltonian and find that it can explain the behaviour of the tunnelling rate as a function of the effective Planck's constant in the regular region of parameter space. In the chaotic region we compare our results with the predictions of models that describe chaos-assisted tunnelling. Finally we examine the practicality of performing these experiments in the laboratory with Bose-Einstein condensates.
