On a conjectured formula for quiver varieties

In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula involves a new class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, all of which surprisingly seem to be non-negative. We conjecture that each of these coefficients count the number of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux which satisfy certain conditions. In this paper I give a proof of this conjecture in the special case where the quiver variety can be described by at most four vector bundles. I also prove that the general conjecture follows from a simple combinatorial statement for which substantial computer verification has been obtained.

Complexification of Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions

The complex version of Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions is proposed. The BPU-construction (see [D.Borthwick, T. Paul and A. Uribe, Legendrian distributions with applications to the non-vanishing of Poincaré series of large weight, Invent. math, 122 (1995), 359-402, preprint hep-th/9406036] or [Andrei Tyurin, On Bohr-Sommerfeld bases, math.AG/9909084]) is generalized to this complexification. The new feature of this generalization is a spectral curve. The geometry of such curves is investigated.

Hypersurface Singularities which cannot be resolved in Characteristic Positive

Assume that there exists a hypersurface singularity which cannot be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations in positive characteristic. We show that in the set of defining functions of hypersurface singularities which cannot be resolved, we can find a function satisfying very strong conditions. By these conditions we may be able to deduce a contradiction under the above assumption. Besides, we introduce fundamental concepts for the study of resolution of singularities of germs such as space germs, iterated analytic monoidal transforms with a normal crossing, Weierstrass representations, reduction sequences, and so forth. This is a revised version of a part of contents of my previous manuscript "Resolution of Singularities of Germs in Characteristic Positive associated with Valuation Rings of Iterated Divisor Type" at math.AG/9901048.

A Semiregularity Map for Modules and Applications to Deformations

This paper contains the details and complete proofs of our earlier announcement in math.AG/9907004 . We construct a general semiregularity map for algebraic cycles as asked for by S. Bloch in 1972. The existence of such a semiregularity map has well known consequences for the structure of the Hilbert scheme and for the variational Hodge conjecture. Aside from generalizing and extending considerably previously known results in this direction, we give new applications to deformations of modules that encompass, for example, results of Artamkin and Mukai. The formation of the semiregularity map here involves powers of the cotangent complex, Atiyah classes, and trace maps, and is defined not only for subspaces of manifolds but for perfect complexes on arbitrary complex spaces. It generalizes in particular Illusie's treatment of the Chern character to the analytic context and specializes to Bloch's earlier description of the semiregularity map for locally complete intersections as well as to the infinitesimal Abel-Jacobi map for submanifolds.

Moduli spaces of holomorphic triples over compact Riemann surfaces

A holomorphic triple over a compact Riemann surface consists of two holomorphic vector bundles and a holomorphic map between them. After fixing the topological types of the bundles and a real parameter, there exist moduli spaces of stable holomorphic triples. In this paper we study non-emptiness, irreducibility, smoothness, and birational descriptions of these moduli spaces for a certain range of the parameter. Our results have important applications to the study of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into unitary Lie groups of indefinite signature, which we explore in a companion paper "Surface group representations in PU(p,q) and Higgs bundles". Another application, that we study in this paper, is to the existence of stable bundles on the product of the surface by the complex projective line. This paper, and its companion mentioned above, form a substantially revised version of math.AG/0206012.

Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and jacobians

We construct absolutely simple jacobians of non-hyperelliptic genus 4 curves, using Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. This paper is a natural continuation of author's paper math.AG/0405156.

The characteristic class and ramification of an l-adic etale sheaf

We introduce the characteristic class of an l-adic etale sheaf using a cohomological pairing due to Verdier (SGA5). As a consequence of the Lefschetz-Verdier trace formula, its trace computes the Euler-Poincare characteristic of the sheaf. We compare the characteristic class to two other invariants arising from ramification theory. One is the Swan class of Kato-Saito (math.AG/0402010) and the other is the 0-cycle class defined by Kato for rank 1 sheaves.

The Abelian/Nonabelian Correspondence and Frobenius Manifolds

We propose an approach via Frobenius manifolds to the study (began in math.AG/0407254) of the relation between rational Gromov-Witten invariants of nonabelian quotients X//G and those of the corresponding ``abelianized'' quotients X//T, for T a maximal torus in G. The ensuing conjecture expresses the Gromov-Witten potential of X//G in terms of the potential of X//T. We prove this conjecture when the nonabelian quotients are partial flag manifolds.

Universal variations of Hodge structure and Calabi-Yau Schottky relations

This paper is a sequel to math.AG/9810041 (whose abstract should have mentioned the fact that a version of the jacobi complex and higher-order Kodaira-Spencer maps were also discovered independently by Esnault and Viehweg). We give a canonical algebraic construction for the variation of Hodge structure associated to the universal m-th order deformation of a compact Kahler manifold without vector fields. Specializing to the case of a Calabi-Yau manifold, we give a formula for the mth derivative of its period map and deduce formal defining equations for the image (Schottky relations).

Hurwitz numbers and intersections on moduli spaces of curves

This article is an extended version of preprint math.AG/9902104. We find an explicit formula for the number of topologically different ramified coverings of a sphere by a genus g surface with only one complicated branching point in terms of Hodge integrals over the moduli space of genus g curves with marked points.

Moment maps and equivariant volumes

The study of the volume of big line bundles on a complex projective manifold M has been one of the main veins in the recent interest in the asymptotic properties of linear series. In this article, we consider an equivariant version of this problem, in the presence of a linear action of a reductive group on M. The results in this paper extend and improve those in our previous unpublished work math.AG/0412433.

On possible Chern Classes of stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually lead to an anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V)$ and $c_2(X)$; this leads to the question whether the difference can be realized by a further bundle in the hidden sector. In math.AG/0604597 a conjecture is stated which gives sufficient conditions on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable reflexive sheaf $V$; a weak version of this conjecture predicts the existence of such a $V$ if $c_2(V)$ is of a certain form. In this note we prove that on elliptically fibered $X$ infinitely many cohomology classes $c\in H^4(X, {\bf Z})$ exist which are of this form and for each of them a stable SU(n) vector bundle with $c=c_2(V)$ exists.

Spectral Bundles and the DRY-Conjecture

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually start from a phenomenologically motivated choice of a bundle $V_v$ in the visible sector, the spectral cover construction on an elliptically fibered $X$ being a prominent example. The ensuing anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V_v)$ and $c_2(X)$, or rather the corresponding differential forms, is often 'solved', on the cohomological level, by including a fivebrane. This leads to the question whether the difference can be alternatively realized by a further stable bundle. The 'DRY'-conjecture of Douglas, Reinbacher and Yau in math.AG/0604597 gives a sufficient condition on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable sheaf. In arXiv:1010.1644 we showed that infinitely many classes on $X$ exist for which the conjecture ist true. In this note we give the sufficient condition for the mentioned fivebrane classes to be realized by a further stable bundle in the hidden sector. Using a result obtained in arXiv:1011.6246 we show that corresponding bundles exist, thereby confirming this version of the DRY-Conjecture.

Topologies on schemes and modulus pairs

We study relationships between the Nisnevich topology on smooth schemes and certain Grothendieck topologies on proper and not necessarily proper modulus pairs which were introduced respectively in [9] and [3]. Our results play an important role in the theory of sheaves with transfers on proper modulus pairs. This is a revised version of arXiv:1809.05851 [math.AG].

On Bohr-Sommerfeld bases

This paper combines algebraic and Lagrangian geometry to construct a special basis in every space of conformal blocks, the Bohr-Sommerfeld (BS) basis. We use the method of [D. Borthwick, T. Paul and A. Uribe, Legendrian distributions with applications to the non-vanishing of Poincaré series of large weight, Invent. math, 122 (1995), 359-402, preprint hep-th/9406036], whereby every vector of a BS basis is defined by some half-weighted Legendrian distribution coming from a Bohr-Sommerfeld fibre of a real polarization of the underlying symplectic manifold. The advantage of BS bases (compared to bases of theta functions in [A. Tyurin, Quantization and ``theta functions'', Jussieu preprint 216 (Apr 1999), e-print math.AG/9904046, 32pp.]) is that we can use information from the skillful analysis of the asymptotics of quantum states. This gives that Bohr-Sommerfeld bases are unitary quasi-classically. Thus we can apply these bases to compare the Hitchin connection with the KZ connection defined by the monodromy of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation in combinatorial theory (see, for example, [T. Kohno, Topological invariants for 3-manifolds using representations of mapping class group I, Topology 31 (1992), 203-230; II, Contemp. math 175} (1994), 193-217]).

Generic coverings of plane with A-D-E-singularities

We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.
