Nonlinear von Neumann-type equations: Darboux invariance and spectra

Generalized Euler-Arnold-von Neumann density matrix equations can be solved by a binary Darboux transformation given here in a new form: $ρ[1]=e^{P\ln(μ/ν)}ρe^{-P\ln(μ/ν)}$ where $P=P^2$ is explicitly constructed in terms of conjugated Lax pairs, and $μ$, $ν$ are complex. As a result spectra of $ρ$ and $ρ[1]$ are identical. Transformations allowing to shift and rescale spectrum of a solution are introduced, and a class of stationary seed solutions is discussed.

The classical r-matrix in a geometric framework

We use a Riemannian (or pseudo-Riemannian) geometric framework to formulate the theory of the classical r-matrix for integrable systems. In this picture the r-matrix is related to a fourth rank tensor, named the r-tensor, on the configuration space. The r-matrix itself carries one connection type index and three tensorial indices. Being defined on the configuration space it has no momentum dependence but is dynamical in the sense of depending on the configuration variables. The tensorial nature of the r-matrix is used to derive its transformation properties. The resulting transformation formula turns out to be valid for a general r-matrix structure independently of the geometric framework. Moreover, the entire structure of the r-matrix equation follows directly from a simple covariant expression involving the Lax matrix and its covariant derivative. Therefore it is argued that the geometric formulation proposed here helps to improve the understanding of general r-matrix structures. It is also shown how the Jacobi identity gives rise to a generalized dynamical classical Yang-Baxter equation involving the Riemannian curvature.

Autoregressive model of 1/f noise

An analytically solvable model is proposed exhibiting 1/f spectrum in any desirably wide range of frequency (but excluding the point f=0). The model consists of pulses whose recurrence times obey an autoregressive process with very small damping.

Singularity confinement and algebraic entropy: the case of the discrete Painlevé equations

We examine the validity of the results obtained with the singularity confinement integrability criterion in the case of discrete Painlevé equations. The method used is based on the requirement of non-exponential growth of the homogeneous degree of the iterate of the mapping. We show that when we start from an integrable autonomous mapping and deautonomise it using singularity confinement the degrees of growth of the nonautonomous mapping and of the autonomous one are identical. Thus this low-growth based approach is compatible with the integrability of the results obtained through singularity confinement. The origin of the singularity confinement property and its necessary character for integrability are also analysed.

On the discrete and continuous Miura Chain associated with the Sixth Painlevé Equation

A Miura chain is a (closed) sequence of differential (or difference) equations that are related by Miura or Bäcklund transformations. We describe such a chain for the sixth Painlevé equation (\pvi), containing, apart from \pvi itself, a Schwarzian version as well as a second-order second-degree ordinary differential equation (ODE). As a byproduct we derive an auto-Bäcklund transformation, relating two copies of \pvi with different parameters. We also establish the analogous ordinary difference equations in the discrete counterpart of the chain. Such difference equations govern iterations of solutions of \pvi under Bäcklund transformations. Both discrete and continuous equations constitute a larger system which include partial difference equations, differential-difference equations and partial differential equations, all associated with the lattice Korteweg-de Vries equation subject to similarity constraints.

On the equivalence of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the discrete isotropic Heisenberg magnet

The equivalence of the discrete isotropic Heisenberg magnet (IHM) model and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) given by Ablowitz and Ladik is shown. This is used to derive the equivalence of their discretization with the one by Izergin and Korepin. Moreover a doubly discrete IHM is presented that is equivalent to Ablowitz' and Ladiks doubly discrete NLSE.

Vortices and invariants surfaces generated by symmetries for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We show that certain infinitesimal operators of the Lie-point symmetries of the incompressible 3D Navier-Stokes equations give rise to vortex solutions with different characteristics. This approach allows an algebraic classification of vortices and throws light on the alignment mechanism between the vorticity and the vortex stretching vector. The symmetry algebra associated with the Navier-Stokes equations turns out to be infinite- dimensional. New vortical structures, generalizing in some cases well-known configurations such as, for example, the Burgers and Lundgren solutions, are obtained and discussed in relation to the value of the dynamic angle. A systematic treatment of the boundary conditions invariant under the symmetry group of the equations under study is also performed, and the corresponding invariant surfaces are recognized.

A three-by-three matrix spectral problem for AKNS hierarchy and its binary Nonlinearization

A three-by-three matrix spectral problem for AKNS soliton hierarchy is proposed and the corresponding Bargmann symmetry constraint involved in Lax pairs and adjoint Lax pairs is discussed. The resulting nonlinearized Lax systems possess classical Hamiltonian structures, in which the nonlinearized spatial system is intimately related to stationary AKNS flows. These nonlinearized Lax systems also lead to a sort of involutive solutions to each AKNS soliton equation.

Mean Field and Collisional Dynamics of Interacting Fermion-Boson systems in a Soluble Model

A general time-dependent projection technique is applied to the study of the dynamics of quantum correlations in a system consisting of interacting fermionic and bosonic subsystems, described by the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. The amplitude modulation of the Rabi oscillations which occur for a strong, coherent initial bosonic field is obtained from the spin intrinsic depolarization resulting from collisional corrections to the mean-field approximation.

Surface operator content of the A_L face models

A set of fixed boundary weights for both the critical dense and dilute A_L face models is constructed from the known boundary weights of the related loop model. The surface operator content and the conformal partition functions then follow from the results obtained via the Bethe equations.

Again, Linearizable Mappings

We examine a family of 3-point mappings that include mappings solvable through linearization. The different origins of mappings of this type are examined: projective equations and Gambier systems. The integrable cases are obtained through the application of the singularity confinement criterion and are explicitly integrated.

The Gambier Mapping, Revisited

We examine critically the Gambier equation and show that it is the generic linearisable equation containing, as reductions, all the second-order equations which are integrable through linearisation. We then introduce the general discrete form of this equation, the Gambier mapping, and present conditions for its integrability. Finally, we obtain the reductions of the Gambier mapping, identify their integrable forms and compute their continuous limits.

Discrete and Continuous Linearizable Equations

We study the projective systems in both continuous and discrete settings. These systems are linearizable by construction and thus, obviously, integrable. We show that in the continuous case it is possible to eliminate all variables but one and reduce the system to a single differential equation. This equation is of the form of those singled-out by Painlevé in his quest for integrable forms. In the discrete case, we extend previous results of ours showing that, again by elimination of variables, the general projective system can be written as a mapping for a single variable. We show that this mapping is a member of the family of multilinear systems (which is not integrable in general). The continuous limit of multilinear mappings is also discussed.

Frobenius submanifolds

The notion of a Frobenius submanifold - a submanifold of a Frobenius manifold which is itself a Frobenius manifold with respect to structures induced from the original manifold - is studied. Two dimensional submanifolds are particularly simple. More generally, sufficient conditions are given for a submanifold to be a so-called natural submanifold. These ideas are illustrated using examples of Frobenius manifolds constructed from Coxeter groups, and for the Frobenius manifolds governing the quantum cohomology of CP^2 and CP^1 \times CP^1.

Discrete asymptotic nets and W-congruences in Plucker line geometry

The asymptotic lattices and their transformations are studied within the line geometry approach. It is shown that the discrete asymptotic nets are represented by isotropic congruences in the Plucker quadric. On the basis of the Lelieuvre-type representation of asymptotic lattices and of the discrete analog of the Moutard transformation, it is constructed the discrete analog of the W-congruences, which provide the Darboux-Backlund type transformation of asymptotic lattices. The permutability theorems for the discrete Moutard transformation and for the corresponding transformation of asymptotic lattices are established as well. Moreover, it is proven that the discrete W-congruences are represented by quadrilateral lattices in the quadric of Plucker. These results generalize to a discrete level the classical line-geometric approach to asymptotic nets and W-congruences, and incorporate the theory of asymptotic lattices into more general theory of quadrilateral lattices and their reductions.

A Geometry for Multidimensional Integrable Systems

A deformed differential calculus is developed based on an associative star-product. In two dimensions the Hamiltonian vector fields model the algebra of pseudo-differential operator, as used in the theory of integrable systems. Thus one obtains a geometric description of the operators. A dual theory is also possible, based on a deformation of differential forms. This calculus is applied to a number of multidimensional integrable systems, such as the KP hierarchy, thus obtaining a geometrical description of these systems. The limit in which the deformation disappears corresponds to taking the dispersionless limit in these hierarchies.

Dispersionless Hierarchies, Hamilton-Jacobi Theory and Twistor Correspondences

The dispersionless KP and Toda hierarchies possess an underlying twistorial structure. A twistorial approach is partly implemented by the method of Riemann-Hilbert problem. This is however still short of clarifying geometric ingredients of twistor theory, such as twistor lines and twistor surfaces. A more geometric approach can be developed in a Hamilton-Jacobi formalism of Gibbons and Kodama. AMS Subject Classifiation (1991): 35Q20, 58F07,70H99
