On top Chern classes of universal bundles on moduli spaces of rank two coherent sheaves on the projective plane, or How to calculate the correlation function in SYM N=2 Nf=4 quantum field theory on complex projective plane

We explain how to calculate the correlation function for SYM N=2 SO(3)-gauge QFT with 4 flavors in terms of top Chern classes of the universal bundles over the moduli spaces of rank 2 stable torsion free coherent sheaves with det=-1 on the complex projective plane. We give a direct geometrical description of these moduli spaces, study a 2-dimensional torus action on them, and calculate several initial coefficients of the correlation function via Bott residue formula.

On framed instanton bundles and their deformations

We consider a compact twistor space P and assume that there is a surface S in P, which has degree one on twistor fibres and contains a twistor fibre F, e.g. P a LeBrun twistor space. Similar to Donaldson and Buchdahl we examine the restriction of an instanton bundle V equipped with a fixed trivialisation along F to a framed vector bundle over (S,F). First we develope inspired by Huybrechts and Lehn a suitable deformation theory for vector bundles over an analytic space framed by a vector bundle over a subspace of arbitrary codimension. In the second section we describe the restriction as a smooth natural transformation into a fine moduli space. By considering framed U(r)-instanton bundles as a real structure on framed instanton bundles over P, we show that the bijection between isomorphism classes of framed U(r)-instanton bundles and isomorphism classes of framed vector bundles over (S,F) due to Buchdahl is actually an isomorphism of moduli spaces.

Numerical Schubert calculus

We develop numerical homotopy algorithms for solving systems of polynomial equations arising from the classical Schubert calculus. These homotopies are optimal in that generically no paths diverge. For problems defined by hypersurface Schubert conditions we give two algorithms based on extrinsic deformations of the Grassmannian: one is derived from a Gröbner basis for the Plücker ideal of the Grassmannian and the other from a SAGBI basis for its projective coordinate ring. The more general case of special Schubert conditions is solved by delicate intrinsic deformations, called Pieri homotopies, which first arose in the study of enumerative geometry over the real numbers. Computational results are presented and applications to control theory are discussed.

Kawachi's invariant for normal surface singularities

We study a useful numerical invariant of normal surface singularities, introduced recently by T. Kawachi. Using this invariant, we give a quick proof of the (well-known) fact that all log-canonical surface singularities are either elliptic Gorenstein or rational (without assuming a priori that they are Q-Gorenstein). The main result is a criterion (stated in terms of Kawachi's invariant) regarding global generation of adjoint linear systems on normal surfaces with boundary. Such results can be used in proving effective estimates for global generation on singular threefolds. The theorem of Ein-Lazarsfeld and Kawamata, which says that the minimal center of log-canonical singularities is always normal, explains why the results proved here are relevant in that situation.

On higher order embeddings of Fano threefolds by the anticanonical linear system

The map given by the anticanonical bundle of a Fano manifold is investigated with respect to a number of natural notions of higher order embeddings of projective manifolds. This is of importance in the understanding of higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory, which are usually fibered by special Fano manifolds. An analysis is carried out of the higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory that arise in the study of the first and second reductions. Special attention is given to determining the order of the anticanonical embeddings of the three dimensional Fano manifolds which have been classified by Iskovskih, Mori, and Mukai and also of the Fano complete intersections in $\pn N$.

Resonant Hypergeometric Systems and Mirror Symmetry

The Gamma-series of Gel'fand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky are adapted so that they give solutions for certain resonant systems of GKZ hypergeometric differential equations. For this some complex parameters in the Gamma-series are replaced by nilpotent elements from a ring $R_{A,T}$. The adapted Gamma-series is a function $Ψ$ with values in the finite dimensional vector space $R_{A,T}\otimes C$. Applications of these results in the context of toric Mirror Symmetry are described. Building on work of Batyrev we show that the relative cohomology module of a certain hypersurface in a torus is a GKZ hypergeometric $D$-module which over an appropriate domain is isomorphic to the trivial $D$-module $R_{A,T}\otimes O_T$, where $O_T$ is the sheaf of holomorphic functions on this domain. The isomorphism is explicitly given by adapted Gamma-series. As a result one finds the periods of a holomorphic differential form of degree $d$ on a $d$-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold, needed for the B-model side input to Mirror Symmetry. Relating our work with that of Batyrev and Borisov we interpret the ring $\cR_{\sA,\gT}$ as the cohomology ring of a toric variety and a certain principal ideal in it as a subring of the Chow ring of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection. This interpretation takes place on the A-model side of Mirror Symmetry.

First quantum correction for the moduli space of stable bundles over a Riemann surface

We compute some Gromov-Witten invariants of the moduli space of odd degree rank two stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface of any genus. Next we find the first correction term for the quantum product of this moduli space and hence get the two leading terms of the relations satisfied by the natural generators of its quantum cohomology. Finally, we use this information to get a full description of the quantum cohomology of the moduli space when the genus of the Riemann surface is 3.

Stringy Hodge numbers and Virasoro algebra

Let $X$ be an arbitrary smooth $n$-dimensional projective variety. It was discovered by Libgober and Wood that the product of the Chern classes $c_1(X)c_{n-1}(X)$ depends only on the Hodge numbers of $X$. This result has been used by Eguchi, Jinzenji and Xiong in their approach to the quantum cohomology of $X$ via a representation of the Virasoro algebra with the central charge $c_n(X)$. In this paper we define for singular varieties $X$ a rational number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ which is a stringy version of the number $c_1c_{n-1}$ for smooth $n$-folds. We show that the number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ can be expressed in the same way using the stringy Hodge numbers of $X$. Our results provides an evidence for the existence of an approach to quantum cohomology of singular varieties $X$ via a representation of the Virasoro algebra whose central charge is the rational number $e_{st}(X)$ which equals the stringy Euler number of $X$.

Complements on surfaces

The main result of the paper is a boundedness for $n$-complements on algebraic surfaces. In addition, applications of this theorem to a classification of log Del Pezzo surfaces and of birational contractions for 3-folds are formulated.

Cycles on Siegel 3-folds and derivatives of Eisenstein series

We consider the Siegel modular variety of genus 2 and a p-integral model of it for a good prime p>2, which parametrizes principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension two with a level structure. We consider cycles on this model which are characterized by the existence of certain special endomorphisms, and their intersections. We characterize that part of the intersection which consists of isolated points in characteristic p only. Furthermore, we relate the (naive) intersection multiplicities of the cycles at isolated points to special values of derivatives of certain Eisenstein series on the metaplectic group in 8 variables.

Symmetric matrices and quantum codes

This paper has been withdrawn since a Gilbert-Varshamov bound for general quantum codes has already appeared in Ekert and Macchiavello, Prys. Rev. Lett. 77, p. 2585, and a Gilbert-Varshamov bound for stabilizer codes connected with orthogonal geometry, or equivalently, with symmetric matrices as in this paper, has been proved by Calredbank, Rains, Shor and Sloane, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, p. 405. I would like to thank Robert Calderbank for pointing out these references to me.

The enumerative geometry of K3 surfaces and modular forms

We prove the conjectures of Yau-Zaslow and Gottsche concerning the number curves on K3 surfaces. Specifically, let X be a K3 surface and C be a holomorphic curve in X representing a primitive homology class. We count the number of curves of geometric genus g with n nodes passing through g generic points in X in the linear system |C| for any g and n satisfying C^2=2g+2n-2. When g=0, this coincides with the enumerative problem studied by Yau and Zaslow who obtained a conjectural generating function for the numbers. Recently, Gottsche has generalized their conjecture to arbitrary g in terms of quasi-modular forms. We prove these formulas using Gromov-Witten invariants for families, a degeneration argument, and an obstruction bundle computation. Our methods also apply to P^2 blown up at 9 points where we show that the ordinary Gromov-Witten invariants of genus g constrained to g points are also given in terms of quasi-modular forms.

On the classification of hyperbolic root systems of the rank three. Part I

It was recently understood that from the point of view of automorphic Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras and some aspects of Mirror Symmetry, interesting hyperbolic root systems should have restricted arithmetic type and a generalized lattice Weyl vector. One can consider hyperbolic root systems with these properties as an appropriate hyperbolic analog of the classical finite and affine root systems. This series of papers is devoted to classification of hyperbolic root systems of restricted arithmetic type and with a generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$, having the rank 3 (it is the first non-trivial rank). In the Part I we announce classification of the maximal hyperbolic root systems of elliptic (i.e. $ρ^2 >0$) and parabolic (i.e. $ρ^2=0$) type, having the rank 3. We give sketch of the proof. Details of the proof and further results (non-maximal cases) will be given in Part II. Classification for hyperbolic type (i.e. $ρ^2<0$) and applications will be considered in Part III.

Tamagawa numbers of polarized algebraic varieties

Let ${\cal L} = (L, \| \cdot \|_v)$ be an ample metrized invertible sheaf on a smooth quasi-projective algebraic variety $V$ defined over a number field. Denote by $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ the number of rational points in $V$ having ${\cal L}$-height $\leq B$. We consider the problem of a geometric and arithmetic interpretation of the asymptotic for $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ as $B \to \infty$ in connection with recent conjectures of Fujita concerning the Minimal Model Program for polarized algebraic varieties. We introduce the notions of ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties and ${\cal L}$-primitive fibrations. For ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties $V$ over $F$ we propose a method to define an adelic Tamagawa number $τ_{\cal L}(V)$ which is a generalization of the Tamagawa number $τ(V)$ introduced by Peyre for smooth Fano varieties. Our method allows us to construct Tamagawa numbers for $Q$-Fano varieties with at worst canonical singularities. In a series of examples of smooth polarized varieties and singular Fano varieties we show that our Tamagawa numbers express the dependence of the asymptotic of $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ on the choice of $v$-adic metrics on ${\cal L}$.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ may be considered as symplectic counterparts of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ and Kapranov's Chow quotient construction of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$. All these together brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$.

Cycles algébriques sur les surfaces K3 réelles

For a real algebraic K3 surface $X(R)$, we give all possible values of the dimension $h^1_{alg}(X(R)$ of the group $\H^1_{alg}(X(R),Z/2)$ of algebraic cycles of $X(R)$. In particular, we prove that if $X(R)$ is not an M-surface, $X(R)$ can always be deformed to some $X'(R)$ with $h^1_{alg}(X'(R))=\dim\H^1(X(R),Z/2)$. Furthermore, we obtain that in certain moduli space of real algebraic K3 surfaces, the collection of real isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces $X(R)$ such that $h^1_{alg}(X(R))$is greater or equal than $k$ is a countable union of subspaces of dimension $20-k$.
