Fermi Liquid - Non-Fermi Liquid Transition in the Double Exchange Model

Motivated by recent discovery of colossal magnetoresistance in La$_(1-x)$Ca$x$MnO$_3$ and other manganites, we have studied the double exchange model. We argue that the forced alignment of conduction-electron spin with the core spins that causes ferromagnetism also projects out a large part of the Hilbert space needed for coherent propagation of electrons carrying spin and charge. As a result, the electron becomes a composite object and its Green's function exhibits a two-fluid character: a coherent Fermi-liquid component associated with the ferromagnetically ordered core spins, and a non-Fermi liquid component associated with the disordered spins. With increasing temperature, there is continuous transfer of spectral weight from the Fermi liquid to the non-Fermi liquid component, until the former disappears above $T_c$. In an applied field spectral weight is transferred from the non-Fermi liquid to the component. Implications for the manganites are discussed.

On the Superconductivity of 2D System with Arbitrary Carrier Density in External Magnetic Field

Selfconsistent equations which describe the order parameter and chemical potential behaviour in $2D$ metalic system as functions of external magnetic field, $H$, temperature, $T$, and carrier density, $n$, are obtained. It is shown that for the case of the local pairs (low carrier density and negative chemical potential $μ$) the derivative $dH_{c_2}(T)/dT$ at $T=T_c$ is essentially less then that for the system with Cooper pairs (high carrier density and positive chemical potential $μ\gg T_c$). It is found that in magnetic field satisfying the quantum limit criterium the system is characterized by non-trivial inhomogeneuos order parameter which can exist at rather high temperatures.

Superconducting correlation in the one-dimensional $t$-$J$ model with anisotropic spin interaction and broken parity

A variant of the one-dimensional $t$-$J$ model with anisotropic spin interaction and broken parity is studied by the nested algebraic Bethe-ansatz method. The gapless charge excitations and the gapful spin excitations are obtained. It is shown that the singlet-superconducting correlation dominates in the low-density region by applying the finite-size scaling analysis in the conformal field theory.

Snakes and Ladders

We map spin ladders with $n_l$ legs and couplings $J'$ across all rungs and $J(1 \pm γ)$ along the legs, staggered in both directions, to a sigma model. Setting its $θ= (2m+1)π$ (where it is known to be gapless), we locate the critical curves in the $γ$ versus ${J'\over J}$ plane at each $n_l$, and spin $S$. The phase diagram is rich and has some surprises: when two gapped chains are suitably coupled, the combination becomes gapless. With $n_l, γ$ and $J'/J$ to control, the prospects for experimentally observing any one of these equivalent transitions seem bright. We discuss the order parameters and the behavior of holes in the RVB description.

Electronic Structure, Correlation Effects and Physical Properties of d- and f-Metals and Their Compounds

The book includes all main physical properties of d- and f-transition-metal systems and corresponding theoretical concepts. Especial attention is paid to the theory of magnetism and transport phenomena. Some examples of non-traditional questions which are treated in detail in the book: the influence of density of states singularities on electron properties; many-electron description of strong itinerant magnetism; mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy; microscopic theory of anomalous transport phenomena in ferromagnets. Besides considering classical problems of solid state physics as applied to transition metals, modern developments in the theory of correlation effects in d- and f-compounds are considered within many-electron models. The book contains, where possible, a simple physical discussion. More difficult questions are considered in Appendices.

A model of a pumped continuous atom laser

We present a model of a cw atom laser based on a system of coupled GP equations. The model incorporates continuous Raman outcoupling, pumping and three-body recombination. The outcoupled field has minimal atomic density fluctuations and is locally monochromatic.

Driven Tunneling: Chaos and Decoherence

Chaotic tunneling in a driven double-well system is investigated in absence as well as in the presence of dissipation. As the constitutive mechanism of chaos-assisted tunneling, we focus on the dynamics in the vicinity of three-level crossings in the quasienergy spectrum. The coherent quantum dynamics near the crossing is described satisfactorily by a three-state model. It fails, however, for the corresponding dissipative dynamics, because incoherent transitions due to the interaction with the environment indirectly couple the three states in the crossing to the remaining quasienergy states. The asymptotic state of the driven dissipative quantum dynamics partially resembles the, possibly strange, attractor of the corresponding damped driven classical dynamics, but also exhibits characteristic quantum effects.

Field theory of scaling lattice models. The Potts antiferromagnet

In contrast to what happens for ferromagnets, the lattice structure participates in a crucial way to determine existence and type of critical behaviour in antiferromagnetic systems. It is an interesting question to investigate how the memory of the lattice survives in the field theory describing a scaling antiferromagnet. We discuss this issue for the square lattice three-state Potts model, whose scaling limit as T->0 is argued to be described exactly by the sine-Gordon field theory at a specific value of the coupling. The solution of the scaling ferromagnetic case is recalled for comparison. The field theory describing the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behaviour is also introduced.

Composite Fermion Theory, Edge Currents and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We present a mean field theory of composite fermion edge channel transport in the fractional and integer quantum Hall regimes. An expression relating the electro-chemical potentials of composite fermions at the edges of a sample to those of the corresponding electrons is obtained and a plausible form is assumed for the composite fermion Landau level energies near the edges. The theory yields the observed fractionally quantized Hall conductances and also explains other experimental results. We also discuss some experiments that are relevant to the question whether fractional edge states in real devices should be described as Fermi or Luttinger liquids.

Unified Approach to Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and Finite Size Corrections for Lattice Models and Field Theories

We present a unified approach to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for magnetic chains and field theories that includes the finite size (and zero temperature) calculations for lattice BA models. In all cases, the free energy follows by quadratures from the solution of a {\bf single} non-linear integral equation (NLIE). [A system of NLIE appears for nested BA]. We derive the NLIE for: a) the six-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions; b) the XXZ chain in an external magnetic field $h_z$ and c) the sine-Gordon-massive Thirring model (sG-mT) in a periodic box of size $\b \equiv 1/T $ using the light-cone approach. This NLIE is solved by iteration in one regime (high $T$ in the XXZ chain and low $T$ in the sG-mT model). In the opposite (conformal) regime, the leading behaviors are obtained in closed form. Higher corrections can be derived from the Riemann-Hilbert form of the NLIE that we present.

Modular Invariance, Self-Duality and The Phase Transition Between Quantum Hall Plateaus

We investigate the problem of the superuniversality of the phase transition between different quantum Hall plateaus. We construct a set of models which give a qualitative description of this transition in a pure system of interacting charged particles. One of the models is manifestly invariant under both Duality and Periodic shifts of the statistical angle and, hence, it has a full Modular Invariance. We derive the transformation laws for the correlation functions under the modular group and use them to derive symmetry constraints for the conductances. These allow us to calculate exactly the conductivities at the modular fixed points. We show that, at least at the modular fixed points, the system is critical. Away from the fixed points, the behavior of the model is determined by extra symmetries such as Time Reversal. We speculate that if the natural connection between spin and statistics holds, the model may exhibit an effective analyticity at low energies. In this case, the conductance is completely determined by its behavior under modular transformations.

Simulating spin-boson dynamics with stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equations

Based on recently derived exact stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equations, several strategies for the efficient simulation of open quantum systems are developed and tested on the spin-boson model. The accuracy and efficiency of these simulations is verified for several test cases including both coherent and incoherent dynamics, involving timescales differing by several orders of magnitude. Using simulations with a time-dependent field, the time evolution of coherences in the reduced density matrix is investigated. Even in the case of weak damping, pronounced preparation effects are found. These indicate hidden coherence in the interacting system which can only be indirectly observed in the basis of the reduced quantum dynamics.

Off-diagonal long-range order in one-dimensional many-body problem

We prove that there is off-diagonal long-range order in the symmetrised version of the one-dimensional many-body problem presented by Jain and Khare (Phys. Lett. A262 (1999)35). This model is related to the short-range Dyson model employed to study intermediate statistics in systems like the Anderson model in three dimensions at the metal-insulator transition point and pseudointegrable billiards. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only example showing quantum phases and possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation in one-dimensional statistical mechanics.

Towards a Field Theory of the Plateau Transition

We suggest a procedure for calculating correlation functions of the local densities of states (DOS) at the plateau transitions in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). We argue that their correlation functions are appropriately described in terms of the SL($2,{\Bbb C}$)/SU(2) WZNW model (at the usual Ka{\v c}--Moody point and with the level $6 \leq k \leq 8$). In this model we have identified the operators corresponding to the local DOS, and derived the partial differential equation determining their correlation functions. The OPEs for powers of the local DOS obtained from this equation are in agreement with available results.

Inertial waves in a rotating spherical shell: attractors and asymptotic spectrum

We investigate the asymptotic properties of inertial modes confined in a spherical shell when viscosity tends to zero. We first consider the mapping made by the characteristics of the hyperbolic equation (Poincaré's equation) satisfied by inviscid solutions. Characteristics are straight lines in a meridional section of the shell, and the mapping shows that, generically, these lines converge towards a periodic orbit which acts like an attractor. We then examine the relation between this characteristic path and eigensolutions of the inviscid problem and show that in a purely two-dimensional problem, convergence towards an attractor means that the associated velocity field is not square-integrable. We give arguments which generalize this result to three dimensions. We then consider the viscous problem and show how viscosity transforms singularities into internal shear layers which in general betray an attractor expected at the eigenfrequency of the mode. We find that there are nested layers, the thinnest and most internal layer scaling with $E^{1/3}$-scale, $E$ being the Ekman number. Using an inertial wave packet traveling around an attractor, we give a lower bound on the thickness of shear layers and show how eigenfrequencies can be computed in principle. Finally, we show that as viscosity decreases, eigenfrequencies tend towards a set of values which is not dense in $[0,2Ω]$, contrary to the case of the full sphere ($Ω$ is the angular velocity of the system). Hence, our geometrical approach opens the possibility of describing the eigenmodes and eigenvalues for astrophysical/geophysical Ekman numbers ($10^{-10}-10^{-20}$), which are out of reach numerically, and this for a wide class of containers.
