Effective Potential for Ultracold Atoms at the Zero-Crossing of a Feshbach Resonance

We consider finite-range effects when the scattering length goes to zero near a magnetically controlled Feshbach resonance. The traditional effective-range expansion is badly behaved at this point and we therefore introduce an effective potential that reproduces the full T-matrix. To lowest order the effective potential goes as momentum squared times a factor that is well-defined as the scattering length goes to zero. The potential turns out to be proportional to the background scattering length squared times the background effective range for the resonance. We proceed to estimate the applicability and relative importance of this potential for Bose-Einstein condensates and for two-component Fermi gases where the attractive nature of the effective potential can lead to collapse above a critical particle number or induce instability toward pairing and superfluidity. For broad Feshbach resonances the higher-order effect is completely negligible. However, for narrow resonances in tightly confined samples signatures might be experimentally accessible. This could be relevant for sub-optical wavelength microstructured traps at the interface of cold atoms and solid-state surfaces.

Quantized squeezing and even-odd asymmetry of trapped bosons

We investigate the exact nature of the superfluid-to-Mott-insulator crossover for interacting bosons on an optical lattice in a one-dimensional, harmonic trap by high-precision density-matrix renormalization-group calculations. The results reveal an intermediate regime characterized by a cascade of microscopic steps. These arise as a consequence of individual boson "squeezing" events and display an even-odd alternation dependent on the trap symmetry. We discuss the experimental observation of this behavior, which is generic in an external trapping potential.

Gauge-Away Effect in Cold Gases on Optical Lattices

It is shown that a simple modification of the geometry in which Raman lasers are applied to a cold gas in an optical lattice results in transforming the emerging effective electromagnetic field into a pure gauge. This contrived gauge-away effect can be observed experimentally by measuring the Mott-Insulator to Superfluid critical point. The underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is the ability to engineer the transfer of the transverse component of the gauge potential into its longitudinal one.

Time-reversal-protected single-Dirac-cone topological-insulator states in Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3: Topologically Spin-polarized Dirac fermions with pi Berry's Phase

We show that the strongly spin-orbit coupled materials Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 (first non-Bi topological insulator) and their derivatives belong to the Z2 (Time-Reversal-Protected, elastic backscattering suppressed) topological-insulator class. Using a combination of first-principles theoretical calculations and photoemission spectroscopy, we directly show that Bi2Te3 is a large spin-orbit-induced indirect bulk band gap (about 150 meV) semiconductor whose surface is characterized by a single topological spin-Dirac cone. The electronic structure of self-doped Sb2Te3 exhibits similar Z2 topological properties. We demonstrate that the dynamics of surface spin-only Dirac fermions can be controlled through systematic Mn doping, making these materials classes potentially suitable for exploring novel topological physics. We emphasize (theoretically and experimentally) that the Dirac node is well within the bulk-gap and not degenerate with the bulk valence band.

Mean-field equations for cigar- and disk-shaped Bose and Fermi superfluids

Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) time-dependent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and density functional (DF) equation for a Fermi superfluid at the unitarity and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limits, we derive effective one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) mean-field equations, respectively, for the dynamics of a trapped cigar- and disk-shaped BEC and Fermi superfluid by using the adiabatic approximation. The reduced 1D and 2D equations for a cigar- and disk-shaped Fermi superfluid have simple analytic nonlinear terms and at unitarity produce results for stationary properties and non-stationary breathing oscillation and free expansion in excellent agreement with the solution of the full 3D equation.

Gauge field theory approach to spin transport in a 2D electron gas

We discuss the Pauli Hamiltonian including the spin-orbit interaction within an U(1) x SU(2) gauge theory interpretation, where the gauge symmetry appears to be broken. This interpretation offers new insight into the problem of spin currents in the condensed matter environment, and can be extended to Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We present a few outcomes of the present formulation: i) it automatically leads to zero spin conductivity, in contrast to predictions of Gauge symmetric treatments, ii) a topological quantization condition leading to voltage quantization follows, and iii) spin interferometers can be conceived in which, starting from a arbitrary incoming unpolarized spinor, it is always possible to construct a perfect spin filtering condition.

D-wave bosonic pair in an optical lattice

We present a bosonic model, in which two bosons may form a bound pair with d-wave symmetry via the four-site ring exchange interaction. A d-wave pairing superfluid as well as a d-wave density wave (DDW) state, are proposed to be achievable in this system. This exotic bosonic system can be realized in the BEC zone of a two-dimensional attractive p-band spinless fermionic system. By the mean field approach, we find that at low densities, the d-wave pairs may condensate, leading to a d-wave bosonic paired superfluid. At some particular filling factors, a novel phase, d-wave density wave state, emerges. We study this DDW state and its corresponding quantum phase transition in a two-leg ladder by the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method.

The stability of the low-dimensional mixtures of dilute quantum gases

We study the stability of the dilute Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose mixtures with repulsive interactions in one and two dimensions in terms of the renormalization group. For the Bose-Fermi mixture, we show that the uniform mixture is stable against de-mixing in the dilute limit. For the Bose-Bose mixture, we give the stability conditions in the dilute limit. As a byproduct, we also calculate the critical temperature for the superfluid phase of the two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture in the extremely dilute limit.

Change in the adiabatic invariant in a nonlinear Landau-Zener problem

We study a nonlinear generalization of the Landau-Zener resonance-crossing problem relevant to coherent photo- and magneto-association of ultracold atoms. Due to the structure of the corresponding classical phase space, the adiabatic theorem breaks down even at very small sweep rates, and the adiabatic approximation diverges because of the crossing of a separatrix. First, by introducing a complex term into the Hamiltonian of the system, we eliminate this divergence and construct a valid zero-order approximation. Further, taking into account that the molecular conversion efficiency and the change of the classical adiabatic invariant at the separatrix crossing are related quantities, we calculate the change of the action for the situation when the system starts from the all-atomic state that corresponds to the case of zero initial action. The absolute error of the presented formula for the change in the action is of the order of or less than 10^-4.

Response to comment by Tin-Lun Ho on "Itinerant Ferromagnetism in a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas of Ultracold Atoms", Science 325, 1521 (2009)

Ho claims in his comment that our experiment is direct evidence that itinerant ferromagnetism does not exist in ultracold Fermi gases. This claim is incorrect and based on an invalid estimate of relaxation times and an erroneous interpretation of the detectability of ferromagnetic domains. We point out that the experimental evidence is consistent with the existence of ferromagnetism, but further experiments are needed to distinguish a ferromagnetic ground state from a non-magnetic ground state with ferromagnetic correlations.

Universal Dynamics Near Quantum Critical Points

We give an overview of the scaling of density of quasi-particles and excess energy (heat) for nearly adiabatic dynamics near quantum critical points (QCPs). In particular we discuss both sudden quenches of small amplitude and slow sweeps across the QCP. We show close connection between universal scaling of these quantities with the scaling behavior of the fidelity susceptibility and its generalizations. In particular we argue that the Kibble-Zurek scaling can be easily understood using this concept. We discuss how these scalings can be derived within the adiabatic perturbation theory and how using this approach slow and fast quenches can be treated within the same framework. We also describe modifications of these scalings for finite temperature quenches and emphasize the important role of statistics of low-energy excitations. In the end we mention some connections between adiabatic dynamics near critical points with dynamics associated with space-time singularities in the metrics, which naturally emerges in such areas as cosmology and string theory.

Monte Carlo study of a Fermi gas with infinite scattering length

The Fermi gas at unitarity is a particularly interesting system of cold atoms, being dilute and strongly interacting at the same time. It can be studied non-perturbatively with Monte Carlo methods, like the recently developed worm algorithm. We discuss our implementation and tests of this algorithm and suggest a modification that increases its efficiency by reducing autocorrelations. We then show how the worm algorithm can be applied to calculate the critical temperature of an imbalanced Fermi gas (unequal number of fermions in the two spin components). We finally present some results obtained with the modified algorithm, in the balanced as well as in the imbalanced case.

Dissipative superfluids, from cold atoms to quark matter

Some results about dissipative processes in superfluids are presented. We focus on fermionic superfluidity and restrict our analysis to the contribution of phonons to bulk viscosity, shear viscosity and thermal conductivity. At sufficiently low temperatures phonons give the dominant contribution to the transport coefficients if all the other low energy excitation of the system are gapped. We first consider a system of cold fermionic atoms close to the unitarity limit. Then we turn to the superfluid phase of quark matter that may be realized at high baryonic density.

Bose Einstein condensation and superfluidity in an open system: theory

We propose a new theoretical formalism which describes the Bose Einstein condensation of weakly interacting bosons with finite life time interacting with a thermal bath. We show that if a quasi-thermal distribution function of particles is achieved, the elementary excitations of the condensate show a linear spectrum characteristic of a superfluid, with a renormalized sound velocity with respect to the equilibrium case.

Quantum bright soliton in a disorder potential

At very low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interactions tend to form a bright soliton. When exposed to a sufficiently weak external potential, the shape of the soliton is not modified, but its external motion is affected. We develop in detail the Bogoliubov approach for the problem, treating, in a non-perturbative way, the motion of the center of mass of the soliton. Quantization of this motion allows us to discuss its long time properties. In particular, in the presence of a disordered potential, the quantum motion of the center of mass of a bright soliton may exhibit Anderson localization, on a localization length which may be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

Trapped Two-Dimensional Fermi Gases with Population Imbalance

We study population imbalanced Fermi mixtures under quasi-two-dimensional confinement at zero temperature. Using mean-field theory and the local-density approximation, we study the ground state configuration throughout the BEC-BCS crossover. We find the trapped system to be either fully normal or to consist of a superfluid core surrounded by a normal shell, which is itself either fully or partially polarized. Upon changing the trap imbalance, the trap configuration may undergo continuous transitions between the different ground states. Finally, we argue that thermal equilibration throughout the trap will be considerably slowed down at low temperatures when a superfluid phase is present.

Mixing of Bose and Fermi Superfluids

Trapped ultra-cold atom experiments provide a unique opportunity to understand Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures occurring in contrasting areas of physics. At present there are several atom-trap experiments that could potentially explore this superfluid-mixture regime, thus warranting a detailed understanding of the occurrence and stability of various possible thermodynamic phases in the mixture. In the present work, we therefore construct the finite temperature phase diagram of an interacting atomic mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids. Our study reveals a unique region of phase space, where the BCS instability of the Fermi surface coincides with dynamical instability of the homogeneous mixture towards phase separation through a first-order transition. We illustrate how this intriguing interplay manifests in a trapped configuration, thereby providing important constraints for observing superfluidity in experiments.

Dynamics of interacting atoms in driven tilted optical lattices

The dynamics of cold Bose atoms in driven tilted optical lattices is analyzed focusing on destruction of Wannier-Stark localization and the phenomenon of band collapse. It is argued that an understanding of the experimental results requires thorough account for interaction effects. These are suppression of the ballistic spreading of atoms for resonant driving (a multiple of the driving frequency coincides with the Bloch frequency) and unbounded sub-diffusive spreading of atoms for off-resonant driving.
