On the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps with prescribed singularities

Let $\M$ be a classical Riemannian globally symmetric space of rank one and non-compact type. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps into $\M$ with prescribed singularities along a closed submanifold of the domain. This generalizes our previous work where such maps into the hyperbolic plane were constructed. This problem, in the case where $\M$ is the complex-hyperbolic plane, has applications to equilibrium configurations of co-axially rotating charged black holes in General Relativity.

Dressing orbits of harmonic maps

We study the harmonic map equations for maps of a Riemann surface into a Riemannian symmetric space of compact type from the point of view of soliton theory. There is a well-known dressing action of a loop group on the space of harmonic maps and we discuss the orbits of this action through particularly simple harmonic maps called {\em vacuum solutions}. We show that all harmonic maps of semisimple finite type (and so most harmonic $2$-tori) lie in such an orbit. Moreover, on each such orbit, we define an infinite-dimensional hierarchy of commuting flows and characterise the harmonic maps of finite type as precisely those for which the orbit under these flows is finite-dimensional.

Geometry of Cyclic Quotients, I: Knotted Totally Geodesic Submanifolds in Positively Curved Spheres

We prove that there exists a metric of positive curvature in a three-sphere which admits a given torus knot as a closed geodesic. We also sketch a construction of a metric in a four sphere, very likely of positive curvature, which admits a totally geodesic projective plane with Euler number four. Surpisingly, the technique borrows a lot from the Mostow-Siu-Gromov-Thurston constuction of exotic negatively curved manifolds.

Yamabe Spectra

We study the set of volumes of constant scalar curvature one metrics on an atoroidal three-manifold.The infinum of this set is believed to be attained at a hyperbolic metric. We prove that the supremum of this set is always infinity. The technique is: minimal surfaces, Thurston norm in homology and new conformal invariants.

Poisson structures on certain moduli spaces for bundles on a surface

Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, with Lie algebra $g$, and $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ a principal $G$-bundle. In earlier work we have shown that the moduli space $N(ξ)$ of central Yang- Mills connections, for appropriate additional data, is stratified by smooth symplectic manifolds and that the holonomy yields a diffeomorphism from $N(ξ)$ onto a certain representation space $\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G)$, with reference to suitable smooth structures $C^{\infty}(N(ξ))$ and $C^{\infty}(\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G))$ where $Γ$ denotes the universal central extension of the fundamental group of $Σ$. Given an invariant symmetric bilinear form on $g^*$, we construct here Poisson structures on $C^{\infty}(N(ξ))$ and $C^{\infty}(\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G))$ in such a way that the mentioned diffeomorphism identifies them. When the form on $g^*$ is non-degenerate the Poisson structures are compatible with the stratifications where $\roman{Rep}_ξ(Γ,G)$ is endowed with the corresponding stratification and, furthermore, yield structures of a {\it stratified symplectic space\/}, preserved by the induced action of the mapping class group of $Σ$.

Differential Geometry of Composite Fibred Manifolds

In classical field theory, the composite fibred manifolds Y -> Z -> X provides the adequate mathematical formulation of gauge models with broken symmetries, e.g., the gauge gravitation theory. This work is devoted to connections on composite fibred manifolds. In particular, we get the horizontal splitting of the vertical tangent bundle of a composite fibred manifold, besides the familiar one of its tangent bundle. This splitting defines the modified covariant differential and implies the special fashion of Lagrangian densities of field models on composite manifolds. The spinor composite bundles are examined.

Spaces of Geodesics: Products, Coverings, Connectedness

We continue our study of the space of geodesics of a manifold with linear connection. We obtain sufficient conditions for a product to have a space of geodesics which is a manifold. We investigate the relationship of the space of geodesics of a covering manifold to that of the base space. We obtain sufficient conditions for a space to be geodesically connected in terms of the topology of its space of geodesics. We find the space of geodesics of an $n$-dimensional Hadamard manifold is the same as that of $\R^n$.

Analytic and Reidemeister torsion for representations in finite type Hilbert modules

For a closed Riemannian manifold we extend the definition of analytic and Reidemeister torsion associated to an orthogonal representation of fundamental group on a Hilbert module of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra. If the representation is of determinant class we prove, generalizing the Cheeger-Müller theorem, that the analytic and Reidemeister torsion are equal. In particular, this proves the conjecture that for closed Riemannian manifolds with positive Novikov-Shubin invariants, the L2 analytic and Reidemeister torsions are equal.

Torus bundles and the group cohomology of GL(N,Z)

We prove the vanishing of a certain characteristic class of flat vector bundles when the structure groups of the bundles are contained in GL(N,Z). We do so by explicitly writing the characteristic class as an exact form on the base of the bundle.

Cohomology of Kaehler manifolds with c_1=0

A linear constraint is given on the Betti numbers of a compact hyper-Kaehler manifold, using an index formula for c_1c_{n-1} on an almost complex manifold. The topology of some other manifolds with reduced holonomy is also discussed briefly.

A Groenewold-Van Hove Theorem for S^2

We prove that there does not exist a nontrivial quantization of the Poisson algebra of the symplectic manifold S^2 which is irreducible on the subalgebra generated by the components {S_1,S_2,S_3} of the spin vector. We also show that there does not exist such a quantization of the Poisson subalgebra P consisting of polynomials in {S_1,S_2,S_3}. Furthermore, we show that the maximal Poisson subalgebra of P containing {1,S_1,S_2,S_3} that can be so quantized is just that generated by {1,S_1,S_2,S_3}.

On the number of geodesic segments connecting two points on manifolds of non-positive curvature

In this paper we show that on a complete Riemannian manifold of negative curvature and dimension $n>1$ every two points which realize a local maximum for the distance function are connected by at least $2n+1$ geometrically distinct geodesic segments (i.e. length minimizing). Using a similar method, we obtain that in the case of non-positive curvature, for every two points with the same property as above the number of connecting distinct geodesic segments is at least $n+1$.

Secondary analytic indices

We define analytic indices which involve the eta form and the analytic torsion form. We show that these indices are independent of the geometric choices made in their definitions, and hence are topological in nature.

Fundamental Group of Self-Dual Four-Manifolds with Positive Scalar Curvature

Main Theorem (3.3): Let $M$ be a compact four-dimensional manifold either with curvature, positive on complex isotropic two-planes, or self-dual of positive scalar curvature. If $π_1 (M)$ admits a nontrivial unitary representation, and $M$ is orientable, then there exists a surjective homomorphism from $π_1 (M)$ on $\bbz$. Corollary: If $π_1 (M)$ is finite, then either $π_1 (M) = 1$, or $π_1 (M) = \bbz_2$. Observe that finitely presented groups which do not admit a nontrivial unitary representation, are extremely rare (see 3.4).
