Quasi-unipotence of overconvergent F-crystals

Building on our previous papers (math.AG/0102173, math.AG/0105244, math.AG/0106192) we prove that every overconvergent F-isocrystal over k((t)) is quasi-unipotent (in the sense of Crew), for k a field of positive characteristic.

On Correspondences of a K3 Surface with itself, II

Let X be a K3 surface with a polarization H of degree H^2=2rs and with a primitive Mukai vector (r,H,s). The moduli space of sheaves over X with the isotropic Mukai vector (r,H,s) is again a K3 surface Y. We prove that Y\cong X, if Picard lattice N(X) has an element h_1 with h_1^2=f(r,s), and the pair (H,h_1) satisfies a finite number of congruence conditions modulo N_i(r,s). These conditions are exactly written and are necessary for Y\cong X, if X is general with rk N(X)=2. Existence of such criterion is surprising and gives some geometric interpretation of elements in N(X) with negative square. We also desribe all divisorial conditions on moduli of (X,H) which imply Y\cong X. Thus, here we treat in general problems considered in math.AG/0206158, math.AG/0304415, math.AG/0307355 when H.N(X)=Z was assumed. In general, the results are much more complicated and less efficient.

Configurations in abelian categories. I. Basic properties and moduli stacks

This is the first in a series of papers math.AG/0503029, math.AG/0410267, math.AG/0410268 on "configurations" in an abelian category A. Given a finite partially ordered set (I,<), an (I,<)-configuration (σ,ι,π) is a finite collection of objects σ(J) and morphisms ι(J,K) or π(J,K) : σ(J) --> σ(K) satisfying some axioms, where J,K are subsets of I. Configurations describe how an object X in A decomposes into subobjects, and are especially useful for studying stability conditions on A. This paper defines and motivates the idea of configurations, and explains some natural operations upon them -- subconfigurations, quotient configurations, refinements, improvements and substitution. Then we study moduli spaces of (I,<)-configurations in A, using the theory of Artin stacks. We prove well-behaved moduli stacks exist when A is an abelian category of coherent sheaves or vector bundles on a projective K-scheme P, or of representations of a quiver Q. We define many natural 1-morphisms between the moduli stacks, some of which are representable or of finite type. The sequels will apply these results to construct and study infinite-dimensional algebras associated to a quiver Q, and to define systems of invariants of a projective K-scheme P that "count" (semi)stable coherent sheaves and satisfy interesting identities.

Real K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution and applications. II

We consider real forms of relatively minimal rational surfaces F_m. Connected components of moduli of real non-singular curves in |-2K_{F_m}| had been classified recently for m=0, 1, 4 in math.AG/0312396. Applying similar methods, here we fill the gap for m=2 and m=3 to complete similar classification for any 0\le m\le 4 when |-2K_{F_m}| is reduced. The case of F_2 is especially remarkable and classical (quadratic cone in P^3). As an application, we finished classification of connected components of moduli of real hyper-elliptically polarized K3 surfaces and their deformations to real polarized K3 surfaces started in math.AG/0312396, math.AG/0507197. This could be important in some questions because real hyper-elliptically polarized K3 surfaces can be constructed explicitly.

Instanton counting and Donaldson invariants

For a smooth projective toric surface we determine the Donaldson invariants and their wallcrossing in terms of the Nekrasov partition function. Using the solution of the Nekrasov conjecture math.AG/0306198, hep-th/0306238, math.AG/0409441 and its refinement math.AG/0311058, we apply this result to give a generating function for the wallcrossing of Donaldson invariants of good walls of simply connected projective surfaces with $b_+=1$ in terms of modular forms. This formula was proved earlier in alg-geom/9506018 more generally for simply connected 4-manifolds with $b_+=1$, assuming the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture and it was also derived by physical arguments in hep-th/9709193.

Orbifold Cohomology of A Wreath Product Orbifold

Let X be a compact almost complex manifold with an action of a finite group G. We compute the algebra of G^n coinvariants of the stringy cohomology (math.AG/0104207) of X^n with an action of a wreath product of G. We show that it is isomorphic to the algebra A{S_n} defined by Lehn and Sorger (math.AG/0012166) where we set A to be the orbifold cohomology of [X/G]. As a consequence, we verify a special case of Ruan's cohomological hyper-kaehler conjecture (math.AG/0201123).

Theta functions and Hodge numbers of moduli spaces of sheaves on rational surfaces

Let (S,H) be a rational algebraic surface with an ample divisor. We compute generating functions for the Hodge numbers of the moduli spaces of H-stable rank 2 sheaves on S in terms of certain theta functions for indefinite lattices that were introduced in the paper alg-geom/9612020 written jointly with Don Zagier. If H lies in the closure of the ample cone and has self-intersection 0, it follows that the generating functions are Jacobi forms. In particular the generating functions for the Euler numbers have a similar transformation behaviour under SL(2,Z) as that predicted in Vafa and Witten: A strong coupling test of S-duality. In addition we get that also the generating functions for the signatures can be expressed in terms of modular forms. Finally it turns out that the generating function for the signatures is also (with respect to another developping parameter) the generating function for the Donaldson invariants of S evaluated on all powers of the point class. The paper is related to the recent papers math.AG/9805003 by Yoshioka, math.AG/9805054 and math.AG/9805055 by Qin and Li and hep-th/9802168 by Minahan, Nemeschansky, Vafa and Warner.

Brane Tilings and Their Applications

We review recent developments in the theory of brane tilings and four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. This review consists of two parts. In part I, we describe foundations of brane tilings, emphasizing the physical interpretation of brane tilings as fivebrane systems. In part II, we discuss application of brane tilings to AdS/CFT correspondence and homological mirror symmetry. More topics, such as orientifold of brane tilings, phenomenological model building, similarities with BPS solitons in supersymmetric gauge theories, are also briefly discussed. This paper is a revised version of the author's master's thesis submitted to Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, the University of Tokyo on January 2008, and is based on his several papers: math.AG/0605780, math.AG/0606548, hep-th/0702049, math.AG/0703267, arXiv:0801.3528 and some works in progress.

Surfaces with K^2<3χand finite fundamental group

In this paper we continue the study of algebraic fundamentale group of minimal surfaces of general type S satisfying K_S^2<3χ(S). We show that, if K_S^2= 3χ(S)-1 and the algebraic fundamental group of S has order 8, then S is a Campedelli surface. In view of the results of math.AG/0512483 and math.AG/0605733, this implies that the fundamental group of a surface with K^2<3χthat has no irregular etale cover has order at most 9, and if it has order 8 or 9, then S is a Campedelli surface. To obtain this result we establish some classification results for minimal surfaces of general type such that K^2=3p_g-5 and such that the canonical map is a birational morphism. We also study rational surfaces with a Z_2^3-action.

A universality theorem for Voevodsky's algebraic cobordism spectrum

An algebraic version of a theorem due to Quillen is proved. More precisely, for a ground field k we consider the motivic stable homotopy category SH(k) of P^1-spectra equipped with the symmetric monoidal structure described in arXiv:0709.3905v1 [math.AG]. The algebraic cobordism P^1-spectrum MGL is considered as a commutative monoid equipped with a canonical orientation. For a commutative monoid E in the category SH(k) we identify the set of monoid homomorphisms from MGL to E in the motivic stable homotopy category with the set of all orientations of E. This result was stated originally in a slightly different form by G. Vezzosi in arXiv:math/0004050v2 [math.AG].

Absolutely simple Prymians of trigonal curves

Using Galois Theory, we construct explicitly absolutely simple (principally polarized) Prym varieties that are not isomorphic to jacobians of curves even if we ignore the polarizations. Our approach is based on the previous papers math/0610138 [math.AG] and math/0605028 [math.AG] .

On motivic vanishing cycles of critical loci

Let $U$ be a smooth scheme over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb K$ of characteristic zero and $f:U\to{\mathbb A}^1$ a regular function, and write $X=$Crit$(f)$, as a closed subscheme of $U$. The motivic vanishing cycle $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$ is an element of the $\hatμ$-equivariant motivic Grothendieck ring ${\mathcal M}^{\hatμ}_X$ defined by Denef and Loeser math.AG/0006050 and Looijenga math.AG/0006220, and used in Kontsevich and Soibelman's theory of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants, arXiv:0811.2435. We prove three main results: (a) $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$ depends only on the third-order thickenings $U^{(3)},f^{(3)}$ of $U,f$. (b) If $V$ is another smooth scheme, $g:V\to{\mathbb A}^1$ is regular, $Y=$Crit$(g)$, and $Φ:U\to V$ is an embedding with $f=g\circΦ$ and $Φ\vert_X:X\to Y$ an isomorphism, then $Φ\vert_X^*(MF_{V,g}^ϕ)$ equals $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$ "twisted" by a motive associated to a principal ${\mathbb Z}_2$-bundle defined using $Φ$, where now we work in a quotient ring $\bar{\mathcal M}^{\hatμ}_X$ of ${\mathcal M}^{\hatμ}_X$. (c) If $(X,s)$ is an "oriented algebraic d-critical locus" in the sense of Joyce arXiv:1304.4508, there is a natural motive $MF_{X,s} \in\bar{\mathcal M}^{\hatμ}_X$, such that if $(X,s)$ is locally modelled on Crit$(f:U\to{\mathbb A}^1)$, then $MF_{X,s}$ is locally modelled on $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$. Using results from arXiv:1305.6302, these imply the existence of natural motives on moduli schemes of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold equipped with "orientation data", as required in Kontsevich and Soibelman's motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory arXiv:0811.2435, and on intersections of oriented Lagrangians in an algebraic symplectic manifold. This paper is an analogue for motives of results on perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles proved in arXiv:1211.3259. We extend this paper to Artin stacks in arXiv:1312.0090.

Big I-functions

We introduce a new big I-function for certain GIT quotients W//G using the quasimap graph space from infinitesimally pointed $\mathbb{P}^1$ to the stack quotient [W/G]. This big I-function is expressible by the small I-function introduced in arXiv:0908.4446 [math.AG] and arXiv:1106.3724 [math.AG]. The I-function conjecturally generates the Lagrangian cone of Gromov-Witten theory for W//G defined by Givental. We prove the conjecture when W//G has a torus action with good properties.

An Analytic Description of Local Intersection Numbers at Non-Archimedian Places for Products of Semi-Stable Curves

We generalise a formula of Shou-Wu Zhang, which describes local arithmetic intersection numbers of three Cartier divisors with support in the special fibre on a a self-product of a semi-stable arithmetic surface using elementary analysis. By an approximation argument, Zhang extends his formula to a formula for local arithmetic intersection numbers of three adelic metrized line bundles on the self-product of a curve with trivial underlying line bundle. Using the results on intersection theory from arXiv:1404.1623 [math.AG] we generalize these results to d-fold self-products for arbitrary d. For the approximations to converge, we have to assume that d satisfies the vanishing condition 4.7 from arXiv:1404.1623 [math.AG], which is true at least for $d\in \{2,3,4,5\}$.

D-branes and Azumaya/matrix noncommutative differential geometry, I: D-branes as fundamental objects in string theory and differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds with a fundamental module to real manifolds

We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplectic manifold (resp. a Calabi-Yau manifold; a $7$-manifold with $G_2$-holonomy; a manifold with an almost complex structure $J$), the corresponding notion of Lagrangian maps (resp. special Lagrangian maps; associative maps, coassociative maps; $J$-holomorphic maps) are introduced. Indicative examples linking to symplectic geometry and string theory are given. This provides us with a language and part of the foundation required to study themes, new or old, in symplectic geometry and string theory, including (1) $J$-holomorphic D-curves (with or without boundary), (2) quantization and dynamics of D-branes in string theory, (3) a definition of Fukaya category guided by Lagrangian maps from Azumaya manifolds with a fundamental module with a connection, (4) a theory of fundamental matrix strings or D-strings, and (5) the nature of Ramond-Ramond fields in a space-time. The current note D(11.1) is the symplectic/differential-geometric counterpart of the more algebraic-geometry-oriented first two notes D(1) ([L-Y1]) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) ([L-L-S-Y], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]) in this project.

Further studies on the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds, I. The smooth case

In this follow-up of our earlier two works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) in the D-project, we study further the notion of a `differentiable map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold to a real manifold'. A conjecture is made that the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds as defined in D(11.1) is equivalent to one defined through the contravariant ring-homomorphisms alone. A proof of this conjecture for the smooth (i.e. $C^{\infty}$) case is given in this note. Thus, at least in the smooth case, our setting for D-branes in the realm of differential geometry is completely parallel to that in the realm of algebraic geometry, cf.\ arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG] and arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]. A related conjecture on such maps to ${\Bbb R}^n$, as a $C^k$-manifold, and its proof in the $C^{\infty}$ case is also given. As a by-product, a conjecture on a division lemma in the finitely differentiable case that generalizes the division lemma in the smooth case from Malgrange is given in the end, as well as other comments on the conjectures in the general $C^k$ case. We remark that there are similar conjectures in general and theorems in the smooth case for the fermionic/super generalization of the notion.

Further studies of the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix supermanifolds I. The smooth case: Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz and Green-Schwarz meeting Grothendieck

In this sequel to works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]), D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]), and D(11.3.1) (arXiv:1508.02347 [math.DG]), we re-examine --- and reformulate when in need --- several basic notions in super $C^{\infty}$-algebraic geometry as guided by the mathematical formulation of Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fermionic strings and of Green-Schwarz fermionic strings from the viewpoint of Grothendieck on Algebraic Geometry. Two theorems that are the super counterpart of Theorem~3.1.1 and Theorem~3.2.1 of D(11.3.1) are proved. They unify the notion of "smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix super smooth manifold with a fundamental module to a super smooth manifold" introduced in D(11.2), making it a complete super parallel to the setting for D-branes in the realm of algebraic geometry in D(1) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]), and in the realm of differential or $C^{\infty}$-algebraic geometry in D(11.1) and D(11.3.1). A prototypical definition of dynamical fermionic stacked D-brane world-volume on a space-time in the same spirit of RNS fermionic strings or GS fermionic strings is thus laid down. Similar to D(11.3.1), which paved the path to the construction of non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action (D(13.1) (arXiv:1606.08529 [hep-th])) and the standard action (D(13.3) (arXiv:1704.03237 [hep-th])) for fundamental bosonic stacked D-branes, the current notes shall serve the same for the construction of supersymmetric action for fundamental fermionic stacked D-branes of various dimensions --- a theme of another subseries of the D-project. A notion of "noncommutative $C^{\infty}$-rings" and "morphism" between them is introduced at the end as a byproduct.

Higher dimensional Clifford-Severi equalities

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety, $a\colon X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\mathrm{Pic}^0(A)$ injects into $\mathrm{Pic}^0(X)$ and let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$; denote by $h^0_a(X,L)$ the minimum of $h^0(X,L\otimes a^*α)$ for $α\in \mathrm{Pic}^0(A)$. The so-called Clifford-Severi inequalities have been proven in arXiv:1303.3045 [math.AG] and arXiv:1606.03290 [math.AG]}; in particular, for any $L$ there is a lower bound for the volume given by: $$\mathrm{vol}(L)\ge n! h^0_a(X,L),$$ and, if $K_X-L$ is pseudoeffective, $$\mathrm{vol}(L)\ge 2n! h^0_a(X,L).$$ In this paper we characterize varieties and line bundles for which the above Clifford-Severi inequalities are equalities.
