Undecidability in quantum thermalization

The investigation of thermalization in isolated quantum many-body systems has a long history, dating back to the time of developing statistical mechanics. Most quantum many-body systems in nature are considered to thermalize, while some never achieve thermal equilibrium. The central problem is to clarify whether a given system thermalizes, which has been addressed previously, but not resolved. Here, we show that this problem is undecidable. The resulting undecidability even applies when the system is restricted to one-dimensional shift-invariant systems with nearest-neighbour interaction, and the initial state is a fixed product state. We construct a family of Hamiltonians encoding dynamics of a reversible universal Turing machine, where the fate of a relaxation process changes considerably depending on whether the Turing machine halts. Our result indicates that there is no general theorem, algorithm, or systematic procedure determining the presence or absence of thermalization in any given Hamiltonian.

Convex optimization of programmable quantum computers

A fundamental model of quantum computation is the programmable quantum gate array. This is a quantum processor that is fed by a program state that induces a corresponding quantum operation on input states. While being programmable, any finite-dimensional design of this model is known to be nonuniversal, meaning that the processor cannot perfectly simulate an arbitrary quantum channel over the input. Characterizing how close the simulation is and finding the optimal program state have been open questions for the past 20 years. Here, we answer these questions by showing that the search for the optimal program state is a convex optimization problem that can be solved via semidefinite programming and gradient-based methods commonly employed for machine learning. We apply this general result to different types of processors, from a shallow design based on quantum teleportation, to deeper schemes relying on port-based teleportation and parametric quantum circuits.

Non-commutative Bloch theory

For differential operators which are invariant under the action of an abelian group Bloch theory is the preferred tool to analyze spectral properties. By shedding some new non-commutative light on this we motivate the introduction of a non-commutative Bloch theory for elliptic operators on Hilbert C*-modules. It relates properties of C*-algebras to spectral properties of module operators such as band structure, weak genericity of cantor spectra, and absence of discrete spectrum. It applies e.g. to differential operators invariant under a projective group action, such as Schroedinger, Dirac and Pauli operators with periodic magnetic field, as well as to discrete models, such as the almost Matthieu equation and the quantum pendulum.

Four-body problem in d-dimensional space: ground state, (quasi)-exact-solvability. IV

Due to its great importance for applications, we generalize and extend the approach of our previous papers to study aspects of the quantum and classical dynamics of a $4$-body system with equal masses in {\it $d$}-dimensional space with interaction depending only on mutual (relative) distances. The study is restricted to solutions in the space of relative motion which are functions of mutual (relative) distances only. The ground state (and some other states) in the quantum case and some trajectories in the classical case are of this type. We construct the quantum Hamiltonian for which these states are eigenstates. For $d \geq 3$, this describes a six-dimensional quantum particle moving in a curved space with special $d$-independent metric in a certain $d$-dependent singular potential, while for $d=1$ it corresponds to a three-dimensional particle and coincides with the $A_3$ (4-body) rational Calogero model; the case $d=2$ is exceptional and is discussed separately. The kinetic energy of the system has a hidden $sl(7,{\bf R})$ Lie (Poisson) algebra structure, but for the special case $d=1$ it becomes degenerate with hidden algebra $sl(4,R)$. We find an exactly-solvable four-body $S_4$-permutationally invariant, generalized harmonic oscillator-type potential as well as a quasi-exactly-solvable four-body sextic polynomial type potential with singular terms. Naturally, the tetrahedron whose vertices correspond to the positions of the particles provides pure geometrical variables, volume variables, that lead to exactly solvable models. Their generalization to the $n$-body system as well as the case of non-equal masses is briefly discussed.

A unifying asymptotic approach for nonadiabatic transitions near pairs of real or complex turning points

An asymptotic approach for a Schroedinger type equation with non selfadjoint Hamiltonian of a special type in the case of two close degeneracy (turning) points is developed. Both real and complex degeneracy points are treated by a method of matched asymptotic expansions in the context of a unifying approach. An asymptotic expansion near degeneracy point containing the parabolic cylinder functions is constructed and the transition matrix connecting the coefficients of adiabatic modes in front of and behind the degeneracy point is derived. A simple non-technical recipe is also provided, which enables one to apply results to different physical problems without performing intermediate calculations.

Strong coupling asymptotics for a singular Schroedinger operator with an interaction supported by an open arc

We consider a singular Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ written formally as $-Δ- βδ(x-γ)$ where $γ$ is a $C^4$ smooth open arc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of length $L$ with regular ends. It is shown that the $j$th negative eigenvalue of this operator behaves in the strong-coupling limit, $β\to +\infty$, asymptotically as \[ E_j(β)=-\frac{β^2}{4} +μ_j +\mathcal{O}\Big(\dfrac{\logβ}β\Big), \] where $μ_j$ is the $j$th Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator \[ -\frac{d^2}{ds^2} -\frac{κ(s)^2}{4}\, \] on $L^2(0,L)$ with $κ(s)$ being the signed curvature of $γ$ at the point $s\in(0,L)$.

Reverse Time Migration for Extended Obstacles: Acoustic Waves

We consider the resolution of the single frequency reverse time migration (RTM) method for extended targets without the assumption of the validation of geometric optics approximation. The resolution analysis, which applies in both penetrable and non-penetrable obstacles with sound soft or impedance boundary condition on the boundary of the obstacle, implies that the imaginary part of the cross-correlation imaging functional is always positive and thus may have better stability properties. Numerical experiments are included to illustrate the powerful imaging quality and to confirm our resolution results.

The Lie-Poisson structure of the reduced n-body problem

The classical n-body problem in d-dimensional space is invariant under the Galilean symmetry group. We reduce by this symmetry group using the method of polynomial invariants. As a result we obtain a reduced system with a Lie-Poisson structure which is isomorphic to sp(2n-2), independently of d. The reduction preserves the natural form of the Hamiltonian as a sum of kinetic energy that depends on velocities only and a potential that depends on positions only. Hence we proceed to construct a Poisson integrator for the reduced n-body problem using a splitting method.

Tractors and Twistors from conformal Cartan geometry: a gauge theoretic approach I. Tractors

Tractors and Twistors bundles both provide natural conformally covariant calculi on $4D$-Riemannian manifolds. They have different origins but are closely related, and usually constructed bottom-up from prolongation of defining differential equations. We propose alternative top-down gauge theoretic constructions starting from the conformal Cartan bundle and its vectorial and spinorial associated bundles. Our key ingredient is the dressing field method of gauge symmetry reduction, which allows to exhibit tractors and twistors and their associated connections as gauge field of a non-standard kind as far as Weyl rescaling symmetry is concerned. By which we mean that they implement the gauge principle but are of a different geometric nature than the well known differential geometric objects usually underlying gauge theories. We provide the corresponding BRST treatment. The present paper deals with the case of tractors while a companion paper deals with twistors.

VII$^{\hbar}_a$, III$_{a=1}^{\hbar}$, VI$_{a\neq1}^{\hbar}$

Operadic Lax representations for the harmonic oscillator are used to construct the quantum counterparts of some 3d real Lie algebras in Bianchi classification. The Jacobians of these quantum algebras are studied. It is conjectured that the tangent algebras of these quantum algebras are the Heisenberg algebra. From this it follows that the volume element in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ is quantized by $|(x,y,z)|=4\sqrt{2}(2n+1)$, ($n=0,1,2,\dots$). Thus, the elementary (minimal) length in this model is $l_{min}=2^{5/6}$.

A generalized action for $\left( 2 + 1 \right)$-dimensional Chern--Simons gravity

We show that the so-called semi-simple extended Poincaré (SSEP) algebra in $D$ dimensions can be obtained from the anti-de~Sitter algebra $\mathfrak{so} \left( D-1,2 \right)$ by means of the $S$-expansion procedure with an appropriate semigroup $S$. A general prescription is given for computing Casimir operators for $S$-expanded algebras, and the method is exemplified for the SSEP algebra. The $S$-expansion method also allows us to extract the corresponding invariant tensor for the SSEP algebra, which is a key ingredient in the construction of a generalized action for Chern--Simons gravity in $2+1$ dimensions.

Approximate nonlinear self-adjointness and approximate conservation laws

In this paper, approximate nonlinear self-adjointness for perturbed PDEs is introduced and its properties are studied. Consequently, approximate conservation laws which cannot be obtained by the approximate Noether theorem are constructed by means of the method. As an application, a class of perturbed nonlinear wave equations is considered to illustrate the effectiveness.

A non-symmetric Yang-Baxter Algebra for the Quantum Nonlinear Schrödinger Model

We study certain non-symmetric wavefunctions associated to the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger model, introduced by Komori and Hikami using Gutkin's propagation operator, which involves representations of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra. We highlight how these functions can be generated using a vertex-type operator formalism similar to the recursion defining the symmetric (Bethe) wavefunction in the quantum inverse scattering method. Furthermore, some of the commutation relations encoded in the Yang-Baxter equation for the relevant monodromy matrix are generalized to the non-symmetric case.

Continuity bounds for information characteristics of quantum channels depending on input dimension

We show how to use properties of the quantum conditional mutual information to obtain continuity bounds for information characteristics of quantum channels depending on their input dimension. First we prove tight estimates for variation of the output Holevo quantity with respect to simultaneous variations of a channel and of an input ensemble. Then we obtain tight continuity bounds for output conditional mutual information for a single channel and for $n$ copies of a channel. As a result tight and close-to-tight continuity bounds for basic capacities of quantum channels depending on the input dimension are obtained. They complement the Leung-Smith continuity bounds depending on the output dimension.

The next-order term for optimal Riesz and logarithmic energy asymptotics on the sphere

We survey known results and present estimates and conjectures for the next-order term in the asymptotics of the optimal logarithmic energy and Riesz $s$-energy of $N$ points on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, $d\geq 1$. The conjectures are based on analytic continuation assumptions (with respect to $s$) for the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion (as $N\to \infty$) of the optimal $s$-energy.

Local Density Approximation for Almost-Bosonic Anyons

We discuss the average-field approximation for a trapped gas of non-interacting anyons in the quasi-bosonic regime. In the homogeneous case, i.e., for a confinement to a bounded region, we prove that the energy in the regime of large statistics parameter, i.e., for "less-bosonic" anyons, is independent of boundary conditions and of the shape of the domain. When a non-trivial trapping potential is present, we derive a local density approximation in terms of a Thomas-Fermi-like model.

Advanced topics in gauge theory: mathematics and physics of Higgs bundles

These notes have been prepared as reading material for the mini-course given by the author at the "2019 Graduate Summer School" at Park City Mathematics Institute - Institute for Advanced Study. We begin by introducing Higgs bundles and their main properties (Lecture 1), and then we discuss the Hitchin fibration and its different uses (Lecture 2). The second half of the course is dedicated to studying different types of subspaces (branes) of the moduli space of complex Higgs bundles, their appearances in terms of flat connections and representations (Lecture 3), as well as correspondences between them (Lecture 4).
