Fluctuation of the initial condition from Glauber models

We analyze measures of the azimuthal asymmetry, in particular the participant harmonic moments, epsilon*, in a variety of Glauber-like models for the early stage of collisions at RHIC. Quantitative comparisons indicate substantial model dependence for epsilon*, reflecting different effective number of sources, while the dependence of the scaled standard deviation sigma(epsilon*)/epsilon* on the particular Glauber model is weak. For all the considered models the values of sigma(epsilon*)/epsilon* range from ~0.5 for the central collisions to ~0.3-0.4 for peripheral collisions. These values, dominated by statistics, change only by 10-15% from model to model. For central collisions and in the absence of correlations between the location of sources we obtain through the use of the central limit theorem the simple analytic formula sigma(epsilon*)/epsilon*(b=0) ~ \sqrt{4/pi-1} ~ 0.52$, independent on the collision energy, mass number, or the number of sources. We investigate the shape-fluctuation effects for jet quenching and find they are important only for very central events. Finally, we list some remarks and predictions from smooth hydrodynamics on higher flow coefficients and their fluctuations, in particular sigma(v_4)/v_4=2 sigma(v_2)/v_2.

Three-Particle Azimuthal Correlations

Two-particle azimuthal correlations in central Au+Au collisional at RHIC have revealed a broadened away-side structure, with respect to perpherial Au+Au, pp, and d+Au. This could be explained by different physics mechanisms such as: large angle gluon radiation, deflected jets, Cerenkov gluon radiation, and conical flow generated by hydrodynamic shock-waves. We can discriminate the scenarios with conical emission, Cerenkov radiation and conical flow, from the other mechanisms though three-particle correlations. In addition, the associated particle pT dependence can be used to distinguish conical flow from simple Cerenkov gluon radiation. We will discuss three-particle correlation analyses that have been performed at RHIC and what can be done at the LHC.

Energy, Rapidity and Transverse Momentum Dependence of Multiplicity Fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN SPS

Multiplicity fluctuations in the forward hemisphere were studied for positively, negatively and all charged hadrons produced in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances are presented as a function of collision energy, rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have a bell-like shape and the scaled variance changes monotonously with energy in the range from 0.8 to 1.2. No indication of the critical point is observed. The string-hadronic model UrQMD reproduces results on the scaled variance. The predictions of the hadron-resonance gas model obtained within the grand-canonical and canonical ensembles for the scaled variance disagree with the data.

Na61/Shine at the CERN SPS

Status of the new experimental program to study hadron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS will be presented. In particular, a detailed physics motivation and experimental strategy will be given for the part of the program related to the physics of strongly interacting matter: search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter, study properties of the onset of deconfinement, and high p_T measurements in p+p and p+A interactions. The planned measurements for the neutrino T2K and cosmic-ray experiments will also be discussed.

What are the degrees of freedom in the partonic fluid at RHIC ?

Recent RHIC data show evidence of multiple hadron production mechanisms in heavy ion collisions compared to simple fragmentation in vacuum. I will review the measurements of collective flow, high momentum quenching, and two particle angular correlations to show that neither thermal production nor string fragmentation can describe the abundances, the angular distributions or the kinematic properties of all hadrons produced at RHIC. The proposed new hadronization mechanisms not only serve as evidence for a deconfined partonic phase of matter, but also for strong coupling of the degrees of freedom in the deconfined phase. I will point out a surprising lack of flavor dependence in these properties at RHIC, though, which might have to lead to further revisions of our understanding of the relevant degrees of freedom in the partonic phase and during the hadronization process.

Charm Production at RHIC

Observations by the PHENIX and STAR collaborations suggest that a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma is produced in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). After a brief introduction to heavy-ion physics, measurements of heavy-quark production in heavy-ion collisions and the modification of heavy-quark spectra by the QGP are presented. Measurements of the total charm cross-section in several different collision systems confirm that charm quark-antiquark pairs are produced through parton hard-scattering in the initial stages of the collisions. Non-photonic electrons (proxies for heavy quarks) are suppressed by about a factor of 5 in central Au + Au collisions relative to p + p collisions. This is larger than most current theoretical predictions and has lead to a re-examination of heavy-quark energy loss in the medium. The relative contributions of c and b decays to the non-photonic electron spectrum have been predicted by perturbative QCD calculations; STAR measurements of azimuthal correlation functions of non-photonic electrons and hadrons agree with these predictions.

On the mass formula and Wigner and curvature energy terms

The efficiency of different mass formulas derived from the liquid drop model including or not the curvature energy, the Wigner term and different powers of the relative neutron excess $I$ has been determined by a least square fitting procedure to the experimental atomic masses assuming a constant R$_{0,charge}$/A$^{1/3}$ ratio. The Wigner term and the curvature energy can be used independently to improve the accuracy of the mass formula. The different fits lead to a surface energy coefficient of around 17-18 MeV, a relative sharp charge radius r$_0$ of 1.22-1.23 fm and a proton form-factor correction to the Coulomb energy of around 0.9 MeV.

On a possible origin of a resonance-like structure in the two-photon invariant mass spectrum of the reaction pp->ppgg

We show that the resonance-like structure found by the \emph{CELSIUS-WASA Collaboration} in the two-photon invariant mass spectrum of the reaction $pp \to pp γγ$ is rather a signature of the $NN$-decoupled dibaryon resonance $d^\star_1$(1956) that is produced in the radiative process $pp \to γd^\star_1$ and then undergoes radiative decay into two protons $d^\star_1 \to pp γ$. It is found that a contribution of the dibaryon mechanism $pp \to γd^\star_1 \to pp γγ$ of the reaction $pp \to pp γγ$ to the invariant mass spectrum of its photon pairs can reasonably well reproduce the experimentally observed spectrum in the vicinity of the resonance-like structure.

Sub-threshold production of $Σ$(1385) baryons in Al+Al collisions at 1.9$A$ GeV

First measurement of sub-threshold $Σ$(1385) production is presented. Experimental data are presented for Al+Al reactions at 1.9$A$ GeV measured with the FOPI detector at SIS/GSI. The $Σ$(1385)/$Λ$ ratio is found to be in good agreement with the transport and statistical model predictions. The results allow for a better understanding of sub-threshold strangeness production and strangeness exchange reaction which is the dominant process for $K^-$ production below and close-to threshold.

Dynamics, Symmetries and Hadron Properties

We provide a snapshot of Dyson-Schwinger equation applications to the theory and phenomenology of hadrons. Exact results for pseudoscalar mesons are highlighted, with details relating to the U_A(1) problem. Calculated masses of the lightest J=0,1 states are discussed. We recapitulate upon studies of nucleon properties and give a perspective on the contribution of quark orbital angular momentum to the spin of a nucleon at rest.

Energy and System-Size Dependence of Long-Range Multiplicity Correlations from the STAR Experiment

A discussion of results for short and long-range multiplicity correlations (forward-backward) are presented for several systems (Au+Au, Cu+Cu, and pp) and energies (e.g. $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200, 62.4, and $\approx$ 20 GeV). These correlations are measured with increasing values of a gap in pseudorapidity, from no gap at midrapidity to a separation of 1.6 units ($|η|$ = 0.8). For the highest energy, central A+A collisions, the forward-backward correlation strength maintains a constant value across the measurement region. In peripheral collisions, at lower energies, and in pp data, the maximum appears at midrapidity. This result may indicate the possible formation of high density matter for central A+A collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.

Hadron Physics with Anti-Protons: The PANDA Experiment at FAIR

The theory of Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) reproduces the strong interaction at distances much shorter than the size of the nucleon. At larger distance scales, the generation of hadron masses and confinement cannot yet be derived from first principles on basis of QCD. The ${\bar{\rm P}}$ANDA experiment at FAIR will address the origin of these phenomena in controlled environments. Beams of antiprotons together with a multi-purpose and compact detection system will provide unique tools to perform studies of the strong interaction. This will be achieved via precision spectroscopy of charmonium and open-charm states, an extensive search for exotic objects such as glueballs and hybrids, in-medium and hypernuclei spectroscopy, and more. An overview is given of the physics program of the ${\bar{\rm P}}$ANDA collaboration.

Studies of the Lambda(1405) in Proton-Proton Collisions with ANKE at COSY-Juelich

The lineshape of the Lambda(1405) was studied in the pp -> pK+ Y0 reaction at a beam momentum of 3.65 GeV/c at COSY-Juelich. The ANKE spectrometer was used to identify two protons, one positively charged kaon, and one negatively charged pion in the final state. Invariant-mass and missing-mass techniques were applied to separate two neighbouring neutral excited hyperon resonances, the Sigma0(1385) and Lambda(1405). Both the shape and the position of the Lambda(1405) distribution are similar to those measured in other reactions and this information contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the structure of this resonance.

Measurement of photons via conversion pairs in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at RHIC

Thermal photons can provide information on the temperature of the new state of matter created at RHIC. In the p_T region of 1--3 GeV/c thermal photons are expected to be the dominant direct photon source. Therefore, a possible excess compared to a pure decay photon signal due to a thermal photon contribution should be seen in the double ratio (gamma/gamma(pi^0))_{Measured}/(gamma/gamma(pi^0))_{Simulated}, if sufficient accuracy can be reached. We present a method to reconstruct direct photons by measuring e^+e^- pairs from external photon conversions.

Comparative Analysis of Transversities and Longitudinally Polarized Distributions of the Nucleon

We carry out a comparative analysis of the transversities and the longitudinally polarized parton distribution functions in light of the first empirical extraction of the transversity distributions recently done by Anselmino et al. It is shown that the precise determination of the isoscalar tensor charge, which is defined as the 1st moment of the isoscalar combination of the transversity distributions, is of fundamental importance for clarifying the internal spin structure function of the nucleon.

How do diquark fluctuations and chiral soft modes affect di-lepton production in the deconfined phase?

We examine diquark fluctuations and chiral soft modes existing in the precritical region of color superconductivity and chiral transition, respectively, at finite temperature and density. We evaluate how they contribute to anomalous di-lepton production; although there appear peaks in the spectral function owing to the existence of the soft modes, the enhancement of the production rate may not be so prominent to be a clear signal of the phsase transitions.
