Descent curve and the phases of collapse of WTC 7

We examine four WTC 7 descent curves, labeled "C," "E," "N," and "O," either anonymously published, or confidentially communicated to us. Descent curve describes apparent height of a collapsing building as a function of time. The set "C" suggests that there are three active phases of collapse. Phase I is a free fall for the first $H_1\simeq28$m or $T_1\simeq2.3$s, during which the acceleration $a$ is that of the gravity, $a=g=9.8$m/s$^2$. In Phase II, which continues until drop $H_2\simeq68$m, or $T_2\simeq3.8$s, the acceleration is $a\simeq5$m/s$^2$, while in Phase III which continues for the remaining of the data set, $a \simeq -1$m/s$^2$. We propose that the collapse of WTC 7 is initiated by a total and sudden annihilation of the base (section of the building from the ground level to $H_1$), which then allows the top section (building above $H_1$) to free fall during Phase I, and then collide with the ground in Phase II and III. The total duration of the collapse, assuming that Phase III continues to the end, is in the range $7.8-8.6$s. We derive a physical model for collision of the building with the ground, in which we correct the "crush-up" model of Bažant and Verdure, J. Engr. Mech. ASCE, {\bf 133} (2006) 308, and estimate the magnitude of the resistive force in the top section. We compare our findings to those of NIST investigators and find an agreement with respect to the distribution of damage in the primary zone. We conclude that the building was destroyed in a highly controlled fashion.

The Implications of the Early Formation of Life on Earth

One of the most interesting unsolved questions in science today is the question of life on other planets. At the present time it is safe to say that we do not have much of an idea as to whether life is common or exceedingly rare in the universe, and this will probably not be solved for certain unless definitive evidence of extraterrestrial life is found in the future. Our presence on Earth is just as consistent with the hypothesis that life is extremely rare as it is with the hypothesis that it is common, since if there was only one planet with intelligent life, we would find ourselves on it. However, we have more information than this, such as the the surprisingly short length of time it took for life to arise on Earth. Previous authors have analysed this information, concluding that it is evidence that the probability of abiogenesis is moderate ($>$ 13% with 95% probability) and cannot be extremely small. In this paper I use simple probabilistic model to show that this conclusion was based more on an unintentional assumption than on the data. While the early formation of life on Earth provides some evidence in the direction of life being common, it is far from conclusive, and in particular does not rule out the possibility that abiogenesis has only occurred once in the history of the universe.

Thump, ring: the sound of a bouncing ball

A basketball bounced on a stiff surface produces a characteristic loud thump, followed by high-pitched ringing. Describing the ball as an inextensible but flexible membrane containing compressed air, I formulate an approximate theory of the generation of these sounds and predict their amplitudes and waveforms.

Dark matter, dark energy and modern cosmology: the case for a Kuhnian paradigm shift

Several works in the last few years devoted to measure fundamental probes of contemporary cosmology have suggested the existence of a delocalized dominant component (the "dark energy"), in addition to the several-decade-old evidence for "dark matter" other than ordinary baryons, both assuming the description of gravity to be correct. Either we are faced to accept the ignorance of at least 95 % of the content of the universe or consider a deep change of the conceptual framework to understand the data. Thus, the situation seems to be completely favorable for a Kuhnian paradigm shift in either particle physics or cosmology. We attempt to offer here a brief discussion of these issues from this particular perspective, arguing that the situation qualifies as a textbook Kuhnian anomaly, and offer a tentative identification of some of the actual elements typically associated with the paradigm shift process "in the works" in contemporary science.

Messaging with Cost Optimized Interstellar Beacons

This paper considers galactic scale Beacons from the point of view of expense to a builder on Earth. For fixed power density in the far field, what is the cost-optimum interstellar Beacon system? Experience shows an optimum tradeoff, depending on transmission frequency and on antenna size and power. This emerges by minimizing the cost of producing a desired effective isotropic radiated power, which in turn determines the maximum range of detectability of a transmitted signal. We derive general relations for cost-optimal aperture and power. For linear dependence of capital cost on transmitter power and antenna area, minimum capital cost occurs when the cost is equally divided between antenna gain and radiated power. For non-linear power law dependence a similar simple division occurs. This is validated in cost data for many systems; industry uses this cost optimum as a rule-of-thumb. Costs of pulsed cost-efficient transmitters are estimated from these relations using current cost parameters ($/W, $/m2) as a basis. Galactic-scale Beacons demand effective isotropic radiated power >1017 W, emitted powers are >1 GW, with antenna areas > km2. We show the scaling and give examples of such Beacons. Thrifty beacon systems would be large and costly, have narrow searchlight beams and short dwell times when the Beacon would be seen by an alien oberver at target areas in the sky. They may revisit an area infrequently and will likely transmit at higher microwave frequencies, ~10 GHz. The natural corridor to broadcast is along the galactic spiral radius or along the spiral galactic arm we are in. Our second paper argues that nearly all SETI searches to date had little chance of seeing such Beacons.

A Contribution for the Construction of Parabolic Mirrors

We present a new procedure for the construction of parabolic mirrors using low cost materials. We build a spinning system composed of nylon threads, fish hooks and a plastic bucket. We pour liquid plaster into the bucket and set it in constant rotational motion relative to the earth. A liquid substance assumes a parabolic profile when spinning at constant angular velocity relative to an inertial frame under the influence of an uniform vertical gravitational field. By keeping the bucket under rotation for a long time, the plaster solidifies into a parabolic format. We utilize this solidified plaster paraboloid as a model to construct a counter-mould of glass fibre and resin. Over this counter-mould it is placed stretched laminated foil and then it is poured thick plaster over it. In this way it is obtained a parabolic mirror made of laminated foil and plaster. Our only objective here is to present a new method for the construction of parabolic mirror using low cost materials. This allows further exploration of this procedure by teachers and students either in high-schools or in universities.

Light pollution in Spain. An european perspective

Spain appears in light pollution maps as a country less polluted than their neighbours in the European Union. This seems to be an illusion due to its low population density. The data indicate that Spain is one of the most contaminated countries. To reach these conclusions we compare the Spanish case to those of other European countries.

Model for Laws of Nature with Miracles

We review a work by M.Ninomiya and myself about a model for the initial state - i.e. which solution to the equations of motions - that is being realized. The to be realized solution is suggeted to be the one for which a certain number depending on the whole history of the development of the whole Unverse is minimal. This number is called "the imaginary part of the action" and since this article is meant to be somewhat popular the concept of an action is suggestively explained. At first the model of ours give too many miracles, but we believe to have argued that the number of miracles is drastically reduced so the model is not immediately excluded from having a chance of being true. A suggested miracle that has occured is the stopping by the US Congress of the large accelerator SSC under construction already in Texas. A similar bad fait is predicted for the soon to start accelerator LHC in Geneva! By translation submission it has still not started up to its proper energy per particle.

Time turns the universal kaleidoscope

This (withdrawn) creative essay intended to consider the appearance of time's arrow in a fully symmetric universe compatible with "pilot wave" or transactional interpretations (D. Bohm or J.G. Kramer, respectively). The (unstated) hypothesis was that, despite unitary time evolution, the inherent Hilbert transform operator found in the energy operator of the Schrodinger equation and in commutation relations of Fourier observables indicates dissipation and seemingly, entropy increase.

Bayesian reasoning in cosmology

We discuss epistemological and methodological aspects of the Bayesian approach in astrophysics and cosmology. The introduction to the Bayesian framework is given for a further discussion concerning the Bayesian inference in physics. The interplay between the modern cosmology, Bayesian statistics, and philosophy of science is presented. We consider paradoxes of confirmation, like Goodman's paradox, appearing in the Bayesian theory of confirmation. As in Goodman's paradox the Bayesian inference is susceptible to some epistemic limitations in the logic of induction. However Goodman's paradox applied to cosmological hypotheses seems to be resolved due to the evolutionary character of cosmology and accumulation new empirical evidences. We argue that the Bayesian framework is useful in the context of falsificability of quantum cosmological models, as well as contemporary dark energy and dark matter problem.

Quantum Mechanics and Nonlocality: In Search of Instructive Description

A problem with an instructive description of measurement process for sufficiently separated entangled quantum systems is well known. More precise and crafty experiments together with new technological challenges raise questions about sufficiency of formal use of "black-box" Copenhagen paradigm without subtleties of transition between quantum and classical worlds. In this work are discussed applications both standard interpretation of quantum mechanics and "unconventional" models, like relative state formulation, multiple clocks formalism, and extended probabilities.

Why do we live in four dimension?

We perceive the dimension of physical spacetime we live in through physical experiments and hence it is pertinent to probe the dimension in which the fundamental physical forces exist and act? In this context we shall investigate the two classical fields of gravitation and electromagnetism and argue that four dimension is necessary for spacetime but may not be sufficient. Some motivation for higher dimension would also be discussed.

Time, Space and Structure in Ancient India

Textual and archaeological sources are used to provide a synoptic vision of the universe in India. This vision was based on an assumed equivalence of the outer and the inner cosmoses and it is embodied in architecture, music, and art. It provides an archaeoastronomical window on Indian monumental architecture.
