Constant mean curvature surfaces via integrable dynamical system

It is shown that the equation which describes constant mean curvature surface via the generalized Weierstrass-Enneper inducing has Hamiltonian form. Its simplest finite-dimensional reduction has two degrees of freedom, integrable and its trajectories correspond to well-known Delaunay and do Carmo-Dajzcer surfaces (i.e., helicoidal constant mean curvature surfaces).

New Generalized Poisson Structures

New generalized Poisson structures are introduced by using suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order. The corresponding `Jacobi identities' are provided by conditions on these tensors, which may be understood as cocycle conditions. As an example, we provide the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.

On the generalizations of Poisson structures

The characterization of the Nambu-Poisson n-tensors as a subfamily of the Generalized-Poisson ones recently introduced (and here extended to the odd order case) is discussed. The homology and cohomology complexes of both structures are compared, and some physical considerations are made.

Symetric Monopoles

We discuss $SU(2)$ Bogomolny monopoles of arbitrary charge $k$ invariant under various symmetry groups. The analysis is largely in terms of the spectral curves, the rational maps, and the Nahm equations associated with monopoles. We consider monopoles invariant under inversion in a plane, monopoles with cyclic symmetry, and monopoles having the symmetry of a regular solid. We introduce the notion of a strongly centred monopole and show that the space of such monopoles is a geodesic submanifold of the monopole moduli space. By solving Nahm's equations we prove the existence of a tetrahedrally symmetric monopole of charge $3$ and an octahedrally symmetric monopole of charge $4$, and determine their spectral curves. Using the geodesic approximation to analyse the scattering of monopoles with cyclic symmetry, we discover a novel type of non-planar $k$-monopole scattering process.

A ``stable'' version of the Gromov-Lawson conjecture

We discuss a conjecture of Gromov and Lawson, later modified by Rosenberg, concerning the existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature. It says that a closed spin manifold $M$ of dimension $n\ge 5$ has such a metric if and only if the index of a suitable ``Dirac" operator in $KO_n(C^* (π_1(M)))$, the real $K$-theory of the group $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group of $M$, vanishes. It is known that the vanishing of the index is necessary for existence of a positive scalar curvature metric on $M$, but this is known to be a sufficient condition only if $π_1(M)$ is the trivial group, $\Bbb Z/2$, an odd order cyclic group, or one of a fairly small class of torsion-free groups. \par We note that the groups $KO_n(C^*(π))$ are periodic in $n$ with period $8$, whereas there is no obvious periodicity in the original geometric problem. This leads us to introduce a ``stable'' version of the Gromov-Lawson conjecture, which makes the weaker statement that the product of $M$ with enough copies of the ``Bott manifold" $B$ has a positive scalar curvature metric if and only if the index of the Dirac operator on $M$ vanishes. (Here $B$ is a simply connected $8$-manifold which represents the periodicity element in $KO_8(pt)$.) We prove the stable Gromov-Lawson conjecture for all spin manifolds with finite fundamental group and for many spin manifolds with infinite fundamental group.

The decomposition and classification of radiant affine 3-manifolds

An affine manifold is a manifold with torsion-free flat affine connection. A geometric topologist's definition of an affine manifold is a manifold with an atlas of charts to the affine space with affine transition functions; a radiant affine manifold is an affine manifold with holonomy consisting of affine transformations fixing a common fixed point. We decompose an orientable closed radiant affine 3-manifold into radiant 2-convex affine manifolds and radiant concave affine 3-manifolds along mutually disjoint totally geodesic tori or Klein bottles using the convex and concave decomposition of real projective $n$-manifolds developed earlier. Then we decompose a 2-convex radiant affine manifold into convex radiant affine manifolds and concave-cone affine manifolds. To do this, we will obtain certain nice geometric objects in the Kuiper completion of holonomy cover. The equivariance and local finiteness property of the collection of such objects will show that their union covers a compact submanifold of codimension zero, the complement of which is convex. Finally, using the results of Barbot, we will show that a closed radiant affine 3-manifold admits a total cross section, confirming a conjecture of Carrière, and hence every radiant affine 3-manifold is homeomorphic to a Seifert fibered space with trivial Euler number, or a virtual bundle over a circle with fiber homeomorphic to a torus.

Sphere-like Solutions in Surface Functional Theory and Dirac's Membrane Model

A surface functional theory for p-dimensional extended objects, the p-branes, was proposed in previous papers. The field equations for toroidal p-branes was exactly solved in $d=p+2$ dimensions, yielding equally spaced mass-squared spectrum with massless states. In this paper, we obtain the asymptotic distribution of mass spectrum in the point-particle limit of the theory with sphere-like membranes ($p=2$) in $d=4$ dimensions. Similarity between this spectrum and that obtained in the Dirac's membrane model of electron is discussed.

Self-Duality in D <= 8-dimensional Euclidean Gravity

In the context of D-dimensional Euclidean gravity, we define the natural generalisation to D-dimensions of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations, as duality conditions on the curvature 2-form of a Riemannian manifold. Solutions to these self-duality equations are provided by manifolds of SU(2), SU(3), G_2 and Spin(7) holonomy. The equations in eight dimensions are a master set for those in lower dimensions. By considering gauge fields propagating on these self-dual manifolds and embedding the spin connection in the gauge connection, solutions to the D-dimensional equations for self-dual Yang-Mills fields are found. We show that the Yang-Mills action on such manifolds is topologically bounded from below, with the bound saturated precisely when the Yang-Mills field is self-dual. These results have a natural interpretation in supersymmetric string theory.

Complex Trkalian Fields and Solutions to Euler's Equations for the Ideal Fluid

We consider solutions to the complex Trkalian equation,~$ \vec{\nabla} \times \vc = \vc ,$ where~$\vc$ is a 3 component vector function with each component in the complex field, and may be expressed in the form~$ \vc = e^{ig} \vec{\nabla} F, $ with~$g$ real and~$F$ complex. We find, there are precisely two classes of solutions; one where~$g$ is a Cartesian variable and one where~$g$ is the spherical radial coordinate. We consider these flows to be the simplest of all exact 3-d solutions to the Euler's equation for the ideal incompressible fluid. The novel approach we use in solving for these classes of solutions to these 3-dimensional vector pdes involves differential geometric techniques: one may employ the method to generate solutions to other classes of vector pdes.

Modular Invariance and Structure of the Exact Wilsonian Action of N=2 SYM

We construct modular invariants on the moduli space of quantum vacua of N=2 SYM with gauge group SU(2). We also introduce a nonchiral function K which is expressed in terms of the Seiberg-Witten and Poincare' metrics. It turns out that K has all the expected properties of the next to leading term in the Wilsonian effective action whose modular properties are considered in the framework of the dimensional regularization.

A doubled discretisation of abelian Chern-Simons theory

A new discretisation of a doubled, i.e. BF, version of the pure abelian Chern-Simons theory is presented. It reproduces the continuum expressions for the topological quantities of interest in the theory, namely the partition function and correlation function of Wilson loops. Similarities with free spinor field theory are discussed which are of interest in connection with lattice fermion doubling.

Supergeometry and Quantum Field Theory, or: What is a Classical Configuration?

We discuss of the conceptual difficulties connected with the anticommutativity of classical fermion fields, and we argue that the "space" of all classical configurations of a model with such fields should be described as an infinite-dimensional supermanifold M. We discuss the two main approaches to supermanifolds, and we examine the reasons why many physicists tend to prefer the Rogers approach although the Berezin-Kostant-Leites approach is the more fundamental one. We develop the infinite-dimensional variant of the latter, and we show that the functionals on classical configurations considered in a previous paper are nothing but superfunctions on M. We present a programme for future mathematical work, which applies to any classical field model with fermion fields. This programme is (partially) implemented in successor papers.

Homotopy G-algebras and moduli space operad

This paper emphasizes the ubiquitous role of moduli spaces of algebraic curves in associative algebra and algebraic topology. The main results are: (1) the space of an operad with multiplication is a homotopy Gerstenhaber (i.e., homotopy graded Poisson) algebra; (2) the singular cochain complex is naturally an operad; (3) the operad of decorated moduli spaces acts naturally on the de Rham complex $Ω^\bullet X$ of a Kähler manifold $X$, thereby yielding the most general type of homotopy G-algebra structure on $Ω^\bullet X$.

Determinant lines, von Neumann algebras and $L^2$ torsion

In this paper, we suggest a construction of determinant lines of finitely generated Hilbertian modules over finite von Neumann algebras. Nonzero elements of the determinant lines can be viewed as volume forms on the Hilbertian modules. Using this, we study both $L^2$ combinatorial and $L^2$ analytic torsion invariants associated to flat Hilbertian bundles over compact polyhedra and manifolds; we view them as volume forms on the reduced $L^2$ homology and cohomology. These torsion invariants specialize to the the classical Reidemeister-Franz torsion and the Ray-Singer torsion in the finite dimensional case. Under the assumption that the $L^2$ homology vanishes, the determinant line can be canonically identified with $\R$, and our $L^2$ torsion invariants specialize to the $L^2$ torsion invariants previously constructed by A.Carey, V.Mathai and J.Lott. We also show that a recent theorem of Burghelea et al. can be reformulated as stating equality between two volume forms (the combinatorial and the analytic) on the reduced $L^2$ cohomology.

Torsion and fibrations

We study the behaviour of analytic torsion under smooth fibrations. Namely, let F \to E \to^{f} B be a smooth fiber bundle of connected closed oriented smooth manifolds and let $V$ be a flat vector bundle over $E$. Assume that $E$ and $B$ come with Riemannian metrics and $V$ comes with a unimodular (not necessarily flat) Riemannian metric. Let $ρ_{an}(E;V)$ be the analytic torsion of $E$ with coefficients in $V$ and let $\Pf_B$ be the Pfaffian $\dim(B)$-form. Let $H^q_{dR}(F;V)$ be the flat vector bundle over $B$ whose fiber over $b \in B$ is $H^q_{dR}(F_b;V)$ with the Riemannian metric which comes from the Hilbert space structure on the space of harmonic forms induced by the Riemannian metrics. Let $ρ_{an}(B;H^q_{dR}(F;V))$ be the analytic torsion of $B$ with coefficients in this bundle. The Leray-Serre spectral sequence for deRham cohomology determines a certain correction term $ρ^{Serre}_{dR}(f)$. We prove $ρ_{an}(E;V) = \int_B ρ_{an}(F_b;V) \cdot \Pf_B + \sum_{q} (-1)^q \cdot ρ_{an}(B;H^q_{dR}(F;V)) + ρ^{Serre}_{dR}(f)$.

PU(2) monopoles. II: Top-level Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces and Witten's conjecture in low degrees

In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten strata from the companion article (math.DG/0007190), a comparison of all the orientations, and the PU(2) monopole cobordism to compute pairings with the links of level-zero Seiberg-Witten moduli subspaces of the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles. These calculations then allow us to compute low-degree Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants and provide a partial verification of Witten's conjecture.

Circle-valued Morse theory and Reidemeister torsion

Let X be a closed manifold with zero Euler characteristic, and let f: X --> S^1 be a circle-valued Morse function. We define an invariant I which counts closed orbits of the gradient of f, together with flow lines between the critical points. We show that our invariant equals a form of topological Reidemeister torsion defined by Turaev [Math. Res. Lett. 4 (1997) 679-695]. We proved a similar result in our previous paper [Topology, 38 (1999) 861-888], but the present paper refines this by separating closed orbits and flow lines according to their homology classes. (Previously we only considered their intersection numbers with a fixed level set.) The proof here is independent of the previous proof and also simpler. Aside from its Morse-theoretic interest, this work is motivated by the fact that when X is three-dimensional and b_1(X)>0, the invariant I equals a counting invariant I_3(X) which was conjectured in our previous paper to equal the Seiberg-Witten invariant of X. Our result, together with this conjecture, implies that the Seiberg-Witten invariant equals the Turaev torsion. This was conjectured by Turaev [Math. Res. Lett. 4 (1997) 679-695] and refines the theorem of Meng and Taubes [Math. Res. Lett. 3 (1996) 661-674].

Critical-exponent Sobolev norms and the slice theorem for the quotient space of connections

The use of certain critical-exponent Sobolev norms is an important feature of methods employed by Taubes to solve the anti-self-dual and similar non-linear elliptic partial differential equations. Indeed, the estimates one can obtain using these critical-exponent norms appear to be the best possible when one needs to bound the norm of a Green's operator for a Laplacian, depending on a connection varying in a non-compact family, in terms of minimal data such as the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian or the L^2 norm of the curvature of the connection. Following Taubes, we describe a collection of critical-exponent Sobolev norms and general Green's operator estimates depending only on first positive eigenvalues or the L^2 norm of the connection's curvature. Such estimates are particularly useful in the gluing construction of solutions to non-linear partial differential equations depending on a degenerating parameter, such as the approximate, reference solution in the anti-self-dual or PU(2) monopole equations. We apply them here to prove an optimal slice theorem for the quotient space of connections. The result is optimal in the sense that if a point [A] in the quotient space is known to be just L^2_1-close enough to a reference point [A_0], then the connection A can be placed in Coulomb gauge relative to the connection A_0, with all constants depending at most on the first positive eigenvalue of the covariant Laplacian defined by A_0 and the L^2 norm of the curvature of A_0. In this paper we shall for simplicity only consider connections over four-dimensional manifolds, but the methods and results can adapted to manifolds of arbitrary dimension to prove slice theorems which apply when the reference connection is allowed to degenerate.
