MCRG Minimal Walking Technicolor

We present a Monte Carlo renormalisation group study of the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. Using the two-lattice matching technique we measure the running of the coupling and the anomalous mass dimension. We find slow running of the coupling, compatible with an infrared fixed point. Assuming this running is negligible we find a vanishing anomalous dimension, gamma=-0.03(13), however taking this source of systematic error into account gives a much larger range of allowed values, -0.6 < gamma < 0.6. We also attempt to measure the anomalous mass dimension using the stability matrix method. We discuss the systematic errors affecting the current analysis and possible improvements.

Chiral extrapolations for nucleon magnetic moments

Lattice QCD simulations have made significant progress in the calculation of nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the chiral regime in recent years. With simulation results achieving pion masses of order ~180 MeV, there is an apparent challenge as to how the physical regime is approached. By using contemporary methods in chiral effective field theory, both the quark-mass and finite-volume dependence of the isovector nucleon magnetic moment are carefully examined. The extrapolation to the physical point yields a result that is compatible with experiment, albeit with a combined statistical and systematic uncertainty of 10%. The extrapolation shows a strong finite-volume dependence; lattice sizes of L > 5 fm must be used to simulate results within 2% of the infinite-volume result for the magnetic moment at the physical pion mass.

Taste non-Goldstone, flavor-charged pseudo-Goldstone boson masses in staggered chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the masses of taste non-Goldstone pions and kaons in staggered chiral perturbation theory through next-to-leading order in the standard power counting. The results can be used to quantitatively understand taste violations in existing lattice data generated with staggered fermions and to extract the $u$, $d$, and $s$ quark masses and Gasser-Leutwyler parameters from the experimentally observed spectrum. The expressions for the non-Goldstone masses contain low-energy couplings unique to the non-Goldstone sector. With two exceptions these enter as coefficients of analytic terms; all the new couplings can be fixed by performing spectrum calculations. We report one-loop results for the quenched case and the fully dynamical and partially quenched 1+1+1 and 2+1 flavor cases in the chiral SU(3) and SU(2) theories.

Large-N reduction in QCD with two adjoint Dirac fermions

We use lattice simulations to study the single-site version of SU(N) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of Wilson-Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation, a theory whose large volume correspondent is expected to be conformal or nearly conformal. Working with N as large as 53, we map out the phase diagram in the plane of bare `t Hooft coupling, g^2 N, and of the lattice quark mass, a*m, and look for the region where the Z_N^4 center symmetry of the theory is intact. In this region one expects the large-N equivalence of the single site and infinite volume theories to be valid. As for the N_f=1 case (see Phys. Rev. D80: 065031), we find that the center-symmetric region is large and includes both light fermion masses and masses at the cutoff scale. We study the N-dependence of the width of this region and find strong evidence that it remains of finite width as N goes to infinity. Simulating with couplings as small as g^2 N = 0.005, we find that the width shrinks slowly with decreasing g^2 N, at a rate consistent with analytic arguments. Within the center-symmetric region our results for the phase structure, when extrapolated to infinite N, apply also for the large volume theory, which is minimal walking technicolor with N=infinity. We find a first-order transition as a function of a*m for all values of b, which we argue favors that the theory is confining in the infrared. Finally, we measure the eigenvalue densities of the Wilson-Dirac operator and its hermitian version, and use large Wilson loops to study the utility of reduction for extracting physical observables.

S-wave scattering of strangeness -3 baryons

We explore the interactions of two strangeness -3 baryons in multiple spin channels with lattice QCD. This system provides an ideal laboratory for exploring the interactions of multi-baryon systems with minimal dependence on light quark masses. Model calculations of the two-$Ω^-$ system in two previous works have obtained conflicting results, which can be resolved by lattice QCD. The lattice calculations are performed using two different volumes with $L\sim2.5$ and 3.9 fm on anisotropic clover lattices at $m_π\sim 390$ MeV with a lattice spacing of $a_s \sim 0.123$ fm in the spatial direction and $a_t\sim{a}_s/3.5$ in the temporal direction. Using multiple interpolating operators from a non-displaced source, we present scattering information for two ground state $Ω^-$ baryons in both the S=0 and S=2 channels. For S=0, $k\cotδ$ is extracted at two volumes, which lead to an extrapolated scattering length of $a^{ΩΩ}_{S=0}=0.16 \pm 0.22 \ \text{fm}$, indicating a weakly repulsive interaction. Additionally, for S=2, two separate highly repulsive states are observed. We also present results on the interactions of the excited strangeness -3, spin-1/2 states with the ground spin-3/2 states for the spin-1 and spin-2 channels. Results for these interactions are consistent with attractive behavior.

The critical line of two-flavor QCD at finite isospin or baryon densities from imaginary chemical potentials

We determine the (pseudo)critical lines of QCD with two degenerate staggered fermions at nonzero temperature and quark or isospin density, in the region of imaginary chemical potentials; analytic continuation is then used to prolongate to the region of real chemical potentials. We obtain an accurate determination of the curvatures at zero chemical potential, quantifying the deviation between the case of finite quark and of finite isospin chemical potential. Deviations from a quadratic dependence of the pseudocritical lines on the chemical potential are clearly seen in both cases: we try different extrapolations and, for the case of nonzero isospin chemical potential, confront them with the results of direct Monte Carlo simulations. Finally we find that, as for the finite quark density case, an imaginary isospin chemical potential can strengthen the transition till turning it into strong first order.

Modeling the Gluon Propagator in Landau Gauge: Lattice Estimates of Pole Masses and Dimension-Two Condensates

We present an analytic description of numerical results for the Landau-gauge SU(2) gluon propagator D(p^2), obtained from lattice simulations (in the scaling region) for the largest lattice sizes to date, in d = 2, 3 and 4 space-time dimensions. Fits to the gluon data in 3d and in 4d show very good agreement with the tree-level prediction of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) framework, supporting a massive behavior for D(p^2) in the infrared limit. In particular, we investigate the propagator's pole structure and provide estimates of the dynamical mass scales that can be associated with dimension-two condensates in the theory. In the 2d case, fitting the data requires a non-integer power of the momentum p in the numerator of the expression for D(p^2). In this case, an infinite-volume-limit extrapolation gives D(0) = 0. Our analysis suggests that this result is related to a particular symmetry in the complex-pole structure of the propagator and not to purely imaginary poles, as would be expected in the original Gribov-Zwanziger scenario.

Non-perturbative proton stability

Proton decay is a generic prediction of GUT models and is therefore an important channel to detect the existence of unification or to set limits on GUT models. Current bounds on the proton lifetime are around 10^33 years, which sets stringent limits on the GUT scale. These limits are obtained under `reasonable' assumptions about the size of the hadronic matrix elements. In this paper we present a non-perturbative calculation of the hadronic matrix elements within the chiral bag model of the proton. We argue that there is an exponential suppression of the matrix elements, due to non-perturbative QCD, that stifles proton decay by orders of magnitude -- potentially O(10^-10). This suppression is present for small quark masses and is due to the chiral symmetry breaking of QCD. Such a suppression has clear implications for GUT models and could resuscitate several scenarios.

Scaling properties of Wilson loops pierced by P-vortices

P-vortices, in an SU(N) lattice gauge theory, are excitations on the center-projected Z(N) lattice. We study the ratio of expectation values of SU(2) Wilson loops, on the unprojected lattice, linked to a single P-vortex, to that of Wilson loops which are not linked to any P-vortices. When these ratios are plotted versus loop area in physical units, for a range of lattice couplings, it is found that the points fall approximately on a single curve, consistent with scaling. We also find that the ratios are rather insensitive to the point where the minimal area of the loop is pierced by the P-vortex.

Finite size scaling in minimal walking technicolor

We compare observables to the finite size scaling hypothesis in SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. The fits that we obtain yield an estimate of the anomalous mass dimension that is consistent with four loop perturbation theory: $γ= 0.51 \pm 0.16$, with the error due to systematic uncertainties in the finite size scaling analysis. The result is somewhat larger than one Schrödinger functional study (by 1.3$σ$) but consistent with another.

The Microscopic Twisted Mass Dirac Spectrum

The microscopic spectral density for lattice QCD with two flavors and maximally twisted mass is computed. The results are given for fixed index of the Dirac operator and include the leading order $a^2$ corrections to the chiral Lagrangian due to the discretization errors. The computation is carried out within the framework of Wilson chiral perturbation theory.

Deconfinement in Yang-Mills theory through toroidal compactification with deformation

We introduce field theory techniques through which the deconfinement transition of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory can be moved to a semi-classical domain where it becomes calculable using two-dimensional field theory. We achieve this through a double- trace deformation of toroidally compactified Yang-Mills theory on R2 \times S1_L \times S1_β. At large N, fixed-L, and arbitrary β, the thermodynamics of the deformed theory is equivalent to that of ordinary Yang-Mills theory at leading order in the large N expansion. At fixed-N, small L and a range of β, the deformed theory maps to a two-dimensional theory with electric and magnetic (order and disorder) perturbations, analogs of which appear in planar spin-systems and statistical physics. We show that in this regime the deconfinement transition is driven by the competition between electric and magnetic perturbations in this two-dimensional theory. This appears to support the scenario proposed by Liao and Shuryak regarding the magnetic component of the quark-gluon plasma at RHIC.

The $Δ_{mix}$ parameter in the overlap on domain-wall mixed action

A direct calculation of the mixed-action parameter $Δ_{mix}$ with valence overlap fermions on a domain-wall fermion sea is presented. The calculation is performed on four ensembles of the 2+1-flavor domain-wall gauge configurations: $24^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l= 0.005$, $a=0.114\fm$) and $32^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l = 0.004, 0.006, 0.008$, $a=0.085\fm$). For pion masses close to $300\MeV$ we find \hbox{$Δ_{mix}=0.030(6)\GeV^4$} at $a=0.114\fm$ and $Δ_{mix}=0.033(12)\GeV^4$ at $a=0.085\fm$. The results are quite independent of the lattice spacing and they are significantly smaller than the results for valence domain-wall fermions on Asqtad sea or those of valence overlap fermions on clover sea. Combining the results extracted from these two ensembles, we get $Δ_{mix}=0.030(6)(5)\GeV^4$, where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error associated with the fitting method.

Renormalization constants of local operators for Wilson type improved fermions

Perturbative and non-perturbative results are presented on the renormalization constants of the quark field and the vector, axial-vector, pseudoscalar, scalar and tensor currents. The perturbative computation, carried out at one-loop level and up to second order in the lattice spacing, is performed for a fermion action, which includes the clover term and the twisted mass parameter yielding results that are applicable for unimproved Wilson fermions, as well as for improved clover and twisted mass fermions. We consider ten variants of the Symanzik improved gauge action corresponding to ten different values of the plaquette coefficients. Non-perturbative results are obtained using the twisted mass Wilson fermion formulation employing two degenerate dynamical quarks and the tree-level Symanzik improved gluon action. The simulations are performed for pion masses in the range of 480 MeV to 260 MeV and at three values of the lattice spacing, a, corresponding to beta=3.9, 4.05, 4.20. For each renormalization factor computed non-perturbatively we subtract its perturbative O(a^2) terms so that we eliminate part of the cut-off artifacts. The renormalization constants are converted to MS-bar at a scale of mu=2 GeV. The perturbative results depend on a large number of parameters and are made easily accessible to the reader by including them in the distribution package of this paper, as a Mathematica input file.

Baryon Number Dirac Spectrum in QCD

The relation between the baryon number in QCD at nonzero chemical potential and the spectral density of the baryon number Dirac operator, $γ_0(D+m)$, is examined. We show that extreme oscillations of the spectral density, caused by the QCD sign problem, are essential for the formation of the average baryon number when $μ>m_π/2$. We compute the oscillating region of the spectral density using chiral perturbation theory. The extreme oscillations have a microscopic period and are resolved using random matrix theory.

Alternate 1/N_c Expansions and SU(3) Breaking from Baryon Lattice Results

A combined expansion in the number of QCD colors 1/N_c and SU(3) flavor breaking parameter epsilon has long been known to provide an excellent accounting for the mass spectrum of the lightest spin-1/2, 3/2 baryons when the quarks are taken to transform under the fundamental SU(N_c) representation, and in the final step N_c \to 3 and epsilon is set to its physical value ~0.3. Subsequent work shows that placing quarks in the two-index antisymmetric SU(N_c) representation leads to quantitatively equally successful mass relations. Recent lattice simulations allow for varying the value of epsilon and confirm the robustness of the original 1/N_c relations. In this paper we show that the same conclusion holds for the antisymmetric quarks, and demonstrate that the mass relations also hold under alternate prescriptions for identifying physical baryons with particular members of the large N_c multiplets.

Multiple-channel generalization of Lellouch-Luscher formula

We generalize the Lellouch-Luscher formula, relating weak matrix elements in finite and infinite volumes, to the case of multiple strongly-coupled decay channels into two scalar particles. This is a necessary first step on the way to a lattice QCD calculation of weak decay rates for processes such as D -> pi pi and D -> KK. We also present a field theoretic derivation of the generalization of Luscher's finite volume quantization condition to multiple two-particle channels. We give fully explicit results for the case of two channels, including a form of the generalized Lellouch-Luscher formula expressed in terms of derivatives of the energies of finite volume states with respect to the box size. Our results hold for arbitrary total momentum and for degenerate or non-degenerate particles.
