Node Polynomials for Curves on Surfaces

We complete the proof of a theorem we announced and partly proved in [Math. Nachr. 271 (2004), 69-90, math.AG/0111299]. The theorem concerns a family of curves on a family of surfaces. It has two parts. The first was proved in that paper. It describes a natural cycle that enumerates the curves in the family with precisely $r$ ordinary nodes. The second part is proved here. It asserts that, for $r\le 8$, the class of this cycle is given by a computable universal polynomial in the pushdowns to the parameter space of products of the Chern classes of the family.

Counting Lines with Vinberg's algorithm

We combine classical Vinberg's algorithms with the lattice-theoretic/arithmetic approach from arXiv:1706.05734 [math.AG] to give a method of classifying large line configurations on complex quasi-polarized K3-surfaces. We apply our method to classify all complex K3-octic surfaces with at worst Du Val singularities and at least 32 lines. The upper bound on the number of lines is 36, as in the smooth case, with at most 32 lines if the singular locus is non-empty.

Intégralité des coefficients de Taylor de racines d'applications miroir

We prove the integrality of the Taylor coefficients of roots of mirror maps at the origin. By mirror maps, we mean formal power series z.exp(G(z)/F(z)), where F(z) and G(z)+log(z)F(z) are particular solutions of certain generalized hypergeometric differential equations. This enables us to prove a conjecture stated by Zhou in "Integrality properties of variations of Mahler measures" [arXiv:1006.2428v1 math.AG]. The proof of these results is an adaptation of the techniques used in our article "Critère pour l'intégralité des coefficients de Taylor des applications miroir", [J. Reine Angew. Math. (to appear)].

The calculus structure of the Hochschild homology/cohomology of preprojective algebras of Dynkin quivers

The Hochschild homology/cohomology an associative algebra, together with the Connes differential, the contraction map and the Lie derivative, forms the structure of calculus. In this paper we compute explicitely the calculus structure of preprojective algebras of Dynkin quivers over a field of characteristic zero. This also completes the work in math.AG/0502301, where the Batalin-Vilkovisky structure of the Hochschild cohomology of preprojective algebras of non-Dynkin quivers are computed and the calculus can be easily computed from that.

Equivariant Satake category and Kostant-Whittaker reduction

We explain (following V. Drinfeld) how the equivariant derived category of the affine Grassmannian can be described in terms of coherent sheaves on the Langlands dual Lie algebra equivariant with respect to the adjoint action, due to some old results of V. Ginzburg. The global cohomology functor corresponds under this identification to restricti on to the Kostant slice. We extend this description to loop rotation equivariant derived category, linking it to Harish-Chandra bimodules for the Langlands dual Lie algebra, so that the global cohomology functor corresponds to the quantum Kostant-Whittaker reduction of a Harish-Chandra bimodule. We derive a conjecture from math.AG/0306413 which identifies the loop-rotation equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannian with quantized completed Toda lattice.

Local analytic classification of $q$-difference equations with $|q|=1$

In this paper, we establish, under convenient diophantine assumptions, a complete analytic classification of $q$-difference modules over the field of germs of meromorphic functions at zero, proving some analytic analogs of the results by Soibelman and Vologodsky, cf. math.AG/0205117, and by Baranovsky and Ginzburg, cf. alg-geom/9607008.

On tensor categories attached to cells in affine Weyl groups

We prove a conjecture by Lusztig, which describes the tensor categories of perverse sheaves on affine flag manifolds, with tensor structure provided by truncated convolution, in terms of the Langlands dual group. We also give a geometric (categorical) description of Lusztig's bijection between two-sided cells in an affine Weyl group, and unipotent conjugacy classes in the Langlands dual group. The main tool is the sheaf-theoretic construction of the center of the affine Hecke algebra due to Gaitsgory (based on ideas of Beilinson and Kottwitz), see math.AG/9912074.

Subword complexes in Coxeter groups

Let (Π,Σ) be a Coxeter system. An ordered list of elements in Σand an element in Πdetermine a {\em subword complex}, as introduced in our paper on Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials (math.AG/0110058). Subword complexes are demonstrated here to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres, and their Hilbert series are shown to reflect combinatorial properties of reduced expressions in Coxeter groups. Two formulae for double Grothendieck polynomials, one of which is due to Fomin and Kirillov, are recovered in the context of simplicial topology for subword complexes. Some open questions related to subword complexes are presented.

Two generalizations of Jacobi's derivative formula

In this paper we generalize the famous Jacobi's triple product identity, considered as an identity for theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives, to higher genus/dimension. By applying the results and methods developed in our previous paper math.AG/0310085 several generalizations to Siegel modular forms are obtained. These generalizations are identities satisfied by theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives at zero. Equating the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of these relations to zero yields non-trivial combinatorial identities.

On the topology of nested set complexes

Nested set complexes appear as the combinatorial core of De Concini-Procesi arrangement models. We show that nested set complexes are homotopy equivalent to the order complexes of the underlying meet-semilattices without their minimal elements. For atomic semilattices, we consider the realization of nested set complexes by simplicial fans as proposed in math.AG/0305142 by the first author and S. Yuzvinsky. We show that in this case the nested set complexes in fact are homeomorphic to the mentioned order complexes.

Combinatorics of rank jumps in simplicial hypergeometric systems

Let A be an integer (d x n) matrix, and assume that the convex hull conv(A) of its columns is a simplex of dimension d-1. Write \NA for the semigroup generated by the columns of A. It was proved by M. Saito [math.AG/0012257] that the semigroup ring \CC[\NA] over the complex numbers \CC is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the rank of the GKZ hypergeometric system H_A(beta) equals the normalized volume of conv(A) for all complex parameters beta in \CC^d. Our refinement here shows, in this simplicial case, that H_A(beta) has rank strictly larger than the volume of conv(A) if and only if beta lies in the Zariski closure in \CC^d of all \ZZ^d-graded degrees where the local cohomology H^i_m(\CC[\NA]) at the maximal ideal m is nonzero for some i < d.

Sets of Hilbert series and their applications

There are several remarks on Hilbert series of finitely presented (f. p.) associative algebras over a field and their modules. First, given an integer $D$, the set of Hilbert series of right-sided ideals with generators and relations of degrees at most $D$ in a f. p. algebra is finite. Second, every f. p. module of linear growth over noetherian or coherent algebra has periodic Hilbert function. Third, every ideal in a Koszul family of ideals (defined in math.AG/0412441) in a f. p. algebra has rational Poincare series.

Cluster algebras IV: Coefficients

We study the dependence of a cluster algebra on the choice of coefficients. We write general formulas expressing the cluster variables in any cluster algebra in terms of the initial data; these formulas involve a family of polynomials associated with a particular choice of "principal" coefficients. We show that the exchange graph of a cluster algebra with principal coefficients covers the exchange graph of any cluster algebra with the same exchange matrix. We investigate two families of parametrizations of cluster monomials by lattice points, determined, respectively, by the denominators of their Laurent expansions and by certain multi-gradings in cluster algebras with principal coefficients. The properties of these parametrizations, some proven and some conjectural, suggest links to duality conjectures of V.Fock and A.Goncharov [math.AG/0311245]. The coefficient dynamics leads to a natural generalization of Al.Zamolodchikov's Y-systems. We establish a Laurent phenomenon for such Y-systems, previously known in finite type only, and sharpen the periodicity result from [hep-th/0111053]. For cluster algebras of finite type, we identify a canonical "universal" choice of coefficients such that an arbitrary cluster algebra can be obtained from the universal one (of the same type) by an appropriate specialization of coefficients.

K-theory of torus manifolds

The {\it torus manifolds} have been defined and studied by M. Masuda and T. Panov (arXiv:math.AT/0306100) who in particular describe its cohomology ring structure. In this note we shall describe the topological $K$-ring of a class of torus manifolds (those for which the orbit space under the action of the compact torus is a {\it homology polytope} whose {\it nerve} is a {shellable} simplicial complex) in terms of generators and relations. Since these torus manifolds include the class of quasi-toric manifolds this is a generalisation of earlier results due to the author and P. Sankaran (arXiv: math.AG/0504107).

Nahm transform of doubly-periodic instantons

This work concerns the study of certain finite-energy solutions of the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations on Euclidean 4-dimensional space which are periodic in two directions, so-called doubly-periodic instantons. We establish a circle of ideas involving equivalent analytical and algebraic-geometric descriptions of these objects. In the first introductory chapter we provide an overview of the problem and state the main results to be proven in the thesis. In chapter 2, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the connections we are concerned with, and show that the coupled Dirac operator is Fredholm. After laying these foundations, we are ready to address the main topic of the thesis, the construction of a Nahm transform of doubly-periodic instantons. By combining differential-geometric and holomorphic methods, we show in chapters 3 through 5 that doubly-periodic instantons correspond bijectively to certain singular Higgs pairs, i.e. meromorphic solutions of Hitchin's equations defined over an elliptic curve. The circle of ideas is finally closed in chapter 8. We start by presenting a construction due to Friedman, Morgan and Witten that associates to each doubly-periodic instanton a spectral pair consisting of a Riemann surface plus a line bundle over it. On the other hand, it was shown by Hitchin that Higgs pairs are equivalent to a similar set of data. We show that the Friedman, Morgan and Witten spectral pair associated with a doubly-periodic instanton coincides with the Hitchin spectral pair associated with its Nahm transform. (This thesis contains the papers math.DG/9909069, math.DG/9910120 and math.AG/9909146.)

The cohomologies of the Iwasawa manifold and of its small deformations

We prove that, for some classes of complex nilmanifolds, the Bott-Chern cohomology is completely determined by the Lie algebra associated to the nilmanifold with the induced complex structure. We use these tools to compute the Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies of the Iwasawa manifold and of its small deformations, completing the computations in arXiv:0709.3528v1 [math.AG] by M. Schweitzer.

Criterion for the integrality of the Taylor coefficients of mirror maps in several variables

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the integrality of the Taylor coefficients at the origin of formal power series $q_i({\mathbf z})=z_i\exp(G_i({\mathbf z})/F({\mathbf z}))$, with ${\mathbf z}=(z_1,...,z_d)$ and where $F({\mathbf z})$ and $G_i({\mathbf z})+\log(z_i)F({\mathbf z})$, $i=1,...,d$ are particular solutions of certain A-systems of differential equations. This criterion is based on the analytical properties of Landau's function (which is classically associated with the sequences of factorial ratios) and it generalizes the criterion in the case of one variable presented in "Critère pour l'intégralité des coefficients de Taylor des applications miroir" [J. Reine Angew. Math.]. One of the techniques used to prove this criterion is a generalization of a version of a theorem of Dwork on the formal congruences between formal series, proved by Krattenthaler and Rivoal in "Multivariate $p$-adic formal congruences and integrality of Taylor coefficients of mirror maps" [arXiv:0804.3049v3, math.NT]. This criterion involves the integrality of the Taylor coefficients of new univariate mirror maps listed in "Tables of Calabi--Yau equations" [arXiv:math/0507430v2, math.AG] by Almkvist, van Enckevort, van Straten and Zudilin.

Heterotic Models without Fivebranes

After discussing some general problems for heterotic compactifications involving fivebranes we construct bundles, built as extensions, over an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold. For these we show that it is possible to satisfy the anomaly cancellation topologically without any fivebranes. The search for a specific Standard model or GUT gauge group motivates the choice of an Enriques surface or certain other surfaces as base manifold. The burden of this construction is to show the stability of these bundles. Here we give an outline of the construction and its physical relevance. The mathematical details, in particular the proof that the bundles are stable in a specific region of the Kähler cone, are given in the mathematical companion paper math.AG/0611762.
