Timelike vs spacelike DVCS from JLab, Compass to ultraperipheral collisions and AFTER@LHC

Timelike and spacelike virtual Compton scattering in the generalized Bjorken scaling regime are complementary tools to access generalized parton distributions. We stress that the gluonic contributions are by no means negligible, even in the medium energy range which will be studied intensely at JLab12 and in the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN. Ultraperipheral collisions with proton or ion beams may also be used at RHIC and at collider or fixed target experiments at LHC.

Experimental measurement methods and data on irradiation of functional design materials by helium ions in linear accelerator

The experimental research on the irradiation of the functional design materials by the Helium ions in the linear accelerator is conducted. The experimental measurements techniques and data on the irradiation of the functional design materials by the Helium ions with the energy up to 4 MeV, including the detailed scheme of experimental measurements setup, are presented. The new design of accelerating structure of the IH-type such as POS-4, using the method of alternate-phase focusing with the step-by-step change of the synchronous phase along the focusing periods in a linear accelerator, is developed with the aim to irradiate the functional design materials by the Helium ions. The new design of the injector of the charged Helium ions with the energy of 120 KeV at the output of an accelerating tube and the accelerating structure of the type of POS-4 for the one time charged Helium ions acceleration in the linear accelerator are researched and developed. The special chamber for the irradiation of functional design materials by the Helium ions is also created. In the process of experiment, the temperature of a sample, the magnitude of current of Helium ions beam and the irradiation dose of sample are measured precisely. The experimental measurement setup and techniques are fully tested and optimized in the course of the research on the electro-physical properties of irradiated samples and the thermal-desorption of Helium ions in a wide range of temperatures

Tracking rare-isotope beams with microchannel plates

A system of two microchannel-plate detectors has been successfully implemented for tracking projectile-fragmentation beams. The detectors provide interaction positions, angles, and arrival times of ions at the reaction target. The current design is an adaptation of an assembly used for low-energy beams ($\sim$1.4 MeV/nucleon). In order to improve resolution in tracking high-energy heavy-ion beams, the magnetic field strength between the secondary-electron accelerating foil and the microchannel plate had to be increased substantially. Results from an experiment using a 37-MeV/nucleon ${}^{56}$Ni beam show that the tracking system can achieve sub-nanosecond timing resolution and a position resolution of $\sim$1 mm for beam intensities up to $5\times10^{5}$ pps.

Approaching the precursor nuclei of the third r-process peak with RIBs

The rapid neutron nucleosynthesis process involves an enormous amount of very exotic neutron-rich nuclei, which represent a theoretical and experimental challenge. Two of the main decay properties that affect the final abundance distribution the most are half-lives and neutron branching ratios. Using fragmentation of a primary $^{238}$U beam at GSI we were able to measure such properties for several neutron-rich nuclei from $^{208}$Hg to $^{218}$Pb. This contribution provides a short update on the status of the data analysis of this experiment, together with a compilation of the latest results published in this mass region, both experimental and theoretical. The impact of the uncertainties connected with the beta-decay rates and with beta-delayed neutron emission is illustrated on the basis of $r$-process network calculations. In order to obtain a reasonable reproduction of the third $r$-process peak, it is expected that both half-lives and neutron branching ratios are substantially smaller, than those based on FRDM+QRPA, commonly used in $r$-process model calculations. Further measurements around $N\sim126$ are required for a reliable modelling of the underlying nuclear structure, and for performing more realistic $r$-process abundance calculations.

Next to leading order analysis of DVCS and TCS

The study of $O(α_s)$ QCD contributions to the timelike and spacelike virtual Compton scattering amplitudes in the generalized Bjorken scaling regime demonstrates that gluonic contributions are by no means negligible even in the medium energy range which will be studied intensely at JLab12 and in the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN.

Pion photo- and electroproduction with chiral MAID

We present a calculation of pion photo- and electroproduction in manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to and including order $q^4$. We fix the low-energy constants by fitting experimental data in all available reaction channels. Our results can be accessed via a web interface, the so-called chiral MAID. We explain how our program works and how it can be used for further analysis.

High-resolution gamma spectroscopy shift-invariant wavelet de-noising

For the multi-resolution of wavelet transform, it used to filter the complex gamma Spectrum, the fluctuation is filtered, while the detector resolution is still kept well, which has been demonstrated as a new, promising technique for gamma spectrum de-noising. However, both side of the peak where the data rapidly changing area, the reconstruction spectrum will be artificial fluctuation of pseudo-Gibbs, when de-noising high-resolution gamma spectrum. To solve these problems, a novel shift-invariant wavelet de-noising algorithm is proposed to treat the gamma spectrum which measured by HPGe detector of the segment gamma scanning system. It has a high resolution, a short measuring time, severe statistical fluctuation and scattering characteristics. The original spectrum was cycle spinning, de-noising by soft threshold, reconstructed. And then it was reversed cycle spinning, while the result was averaged. The algorithm not only overcomes the pseudo-Gibbs in the high-resolution gamma spectrum de-noising by the traditional wavelet, but also keeps the shape of the characteristic peak well. Emphasis will be placed on quantifying the merits of this algorithm to traditional wavelet by exploring the quality of peak detection and localization.

Optimum performance investigation of LYSO crystal pixels: A comparison between GATE simulation and experimental data

Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role in the study of time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) prototype. As it can incorporate accurate physical modeling of scintillation detection process, from scintillation light generation, the transport of scintillation photos through the crystal(s), to the conversion of these photons into electronic signals. The Geant4 based simulation software GATE can provide a user-friendly simulation platform containing the properties needed. In this work, we developed a dedicated module in GATE simulation tool. Using this module, we simulated the light yield, energy resolution, time resolution of LYSO pixels with the same cross-section ($4\times4 mm^{2}$) of different lengths: 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, coupled to a PMT. The experiments were performed to validate the GATE simulation results. The results indicate that the best time resolution (484.0$\pm$67.5 ps) and energy resolution (13.3$\pm$0.4 %) could be produced by using pixel with length of 5 mm. The module can also be applied to other cases for precisely simulating optical photons propagating in scintillators.

Reminiscences of Wit Busza and 41 Years of p+A Physics

One of the more memorable (and easiest) proposal to deal with when I served on Bob Wilson's Program Advisory Committee at NAL (Now Fermilab) from 1972-75 was Proposal-178, "A study of the average multiplicity and multiplicity distributions in hadron-nucleus collisions at high energies", with only 4 authors, Wit Busza, Jerry Friedman, Henry Kendall and Larry Rosenson, as presented at the PAC meeting by Wit. What I remember was that he discussed only ONE 5 inch photomultiplier with a Cherenkov radiator in the beam to make this measurement of production of charged particles with angles up to 30 degrees in various nuclei, 40 hours requested. This turned out to be a "seminal" experiment leading to the Wounded Nucleon and other participant models. Subsequent p(d)+A experiments from the AGS to RHIC, as well as alpha-alpha measurements at the CERN-ISR, will be discussed together with the various `participants' that they revealed.

Accessing interior magnetic field vector components in neutron electric dipole moment experiments via exterior measurements, I. Boundary-value techniques

We propose a new concept for determining the interior magnetic field vector components in neutron electric dipole moment experiments. If a closed three-dimensional boundary surface surrounding the fiducial volume of an experiment can be defined such that its interior encloses no currents or sources of magnetization, each of the interior vector field components and the magnetic scalar potential will satisfy a Laplace equation. Therefore, if either the vector field components or the normal derivative of the scalar potential can be measured on the surface of this boundary, thus defining a Dirichlet or Neumann boundary-value problem, respectively, the interior vector field components or the scalar potential (and, thus, the field components via the gradient of the potential) can be uniquely determined via solution of the Laplace equation. We discuss the applicability of this technique to the determination of the interior magnetic field components during the operating phase of neutron electric dipole moment experiments when it is not, in general, feasible to perform direct in situ measurements of the interior field components. We also study the specifications that a vector field probe must satisfy in order to determine the interior vector field components to a certain precision. The technique we propose here may also be applicable to experiments requiring monitoring of the vector magnetic field components within some closed boundary surface, such as searches for neutron-antineutron oscillations along a flight path or measurements in storage rings of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ and the proton electric dipole moment.

High energy rho meson leptoproduction

We investigate the longitudinal and transverse polarized cross-sections of the leptoproduction of the rho meson in the high energy limit. Our model is based on the computation of the impact factor gamma*(lambda_gamma) -> rho(lambda_rho) using the twist expansion in the forward limit and expressed in the impact parameter space. This treatment involves in the final stage the twist 2 and twist 3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the rho meson and the dipole scattering amplitude. Taking models that exist for the DAs and for the dipole cross-section, we get a phenomenological model for the helicity amplitudes, we compare our predictions with HERA data and get a fairly good description for large enough virtualities of the photon.

Description of the shape evolution in the yrast states of 186Pt

186Pt was tested in the framework of IBM-1 and the X(3) model. The results show that 186Pt is located close to the shape phase transition point, but the B(E2) values little agree with the X(3) model. The shape evolution in the yrast states of 186Pt is also discussed in detail. TRS calculation exhibits a at bottomed potential at low spin states, but a relatively deep minimum at high spin states. It suggests that a shape evolution from vibrational mode to rotational mode happens in 186Pt. The result is in agreement with the E-GOS calculation.

Opportunities in Neutrino Theory -- a Snowmass White Paper

Neutrino masses are clear evidence for physics beyond the standard model and much more remains to be understood about the neutrino sector. We highlight some of the outstanding questions and research opportunities in neutrino theory. We show that most of these questions are directly connected to the very rich experimental program currently being pursued (or at least under serious consideration) in the United States and worldwide. Finally, we also comment on the state of the theoretical neutrino physics community in the U.S.

Coherent Scattering Investigations at the Spallation Neutron Source: a Snowmass White Paper

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, provides an intense flux of neutrinos in the few tens-of-MeV range, with a sharply-pulsed timing structure that is beneficial for background rejection. In this white paper, we describe how the SNS source can be used for a measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CENNS), and the physics reach of different phases of such an experimental program (CSI: Coherent Scattering Investigations at the SNS).

Simulation study on light ions identification methods for carbon beams from 95 to 400 MeV/A

Monte Carlo simulations have been performed in order to evaluate the efficiencies of several light ions identification techniques. The detection system was composed with layers of scintillating material to measure either the deposited energy or the time-of-flight of ions produced by nuclear reactions between 12C projectiles and a PMMA target. Well known techniques such as (DELTA) E--Range, (DELTA) E--E--ToF and (DELTA)E--E are presented and their particle identification efficiencies are compared one to another regarding the generated charge and mass of the particle to be identified. The simulations allowed to change the beam energy matching the ones proposed in an hadron therapy facility, namely from 95 to 400 MeV/A.

Measurement of Inclusive Production of Light Charged Hadrons at BaBar

Inclusive hadron production cross sections in e+e-collisions shed light on the fundamental fragmentation and hadronization processes. We present measurements of the inclusive spectra of charged pions, kaons and protons in hadronic events at a center-of-mass energy of 10.54 \gev. These results are compared with theoretical predictions and the predictions of three hadronization models. Along with previous measurements at higher energies, they are also used to study the scaling properties of hadron production.
