The Multidimensional Darboux Transformation

A generalization of the classical one-dimensional Darboux transformation to arbitrary n-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifolds is constructed using an intrinsic formulation based on the properties of twisted Hodge Laplacians. The classical two-dimensional Moutard transformation is also generalized to non-compact oriented Riemannian manifolds of dimension n greater than one. New examples of quasi-exactly solvable multidimensional matrix Schrödinger operators on curved manifolds are obtained by applying the above results.

Bihamiltonian Reductions and W_n Algebras

We discuss the geometry of the Marsden-Ratiu reduction theorem for a bihamiltonian manifold. We consider the case of the manifolds associated with the Gel'fand-Dickey theory, i.e., loop algebras over sl(n+1). We provide an explicit identification, tailored on the MR reduction, of the Adler-Gel'fand-Dickey brackets with the Poisson brackets on the MR-reduced bihamiltonian manifold N. Such an identification relies on a suitable immersion of the space of sections of the cotangent bundle of N into the algebra of pseudo differential operators connected to geometrical features of the theory of (classical) W_n algebras.

Sequences of Levy Transformations and Multi-Wroński Determinant Solutions of the Darboux System

Sequences of Levy transformations for the Darboux system of conjugates nets in multidimensions are studied. We show that after a suitable number of Levy transformations, with at least a Levy transformation in each direction, we get closed formulae in terms of multi-Wroński determinants. These formulae are for the tangent vectors, Lamè coefficients, rotation coefficients and points of the surface.

Statistical Mechanics of Non-stretching Elastica in Three Dimensional Space

Recently I proposed a new calculation scheme of a partition function of an immersion object using path integral method and theory of soliton (to appear in J.Phys.A). I applied the scheme to problem of elastica in two-dimensional space and Willmore surface in three dimensional space. In this article, I will apply the scheme to elastica in three dimensional space as a more physical model in polymer science. Then orbit space of the nonlinear Schrodinger and complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equations can be regarded as the functional space of the partition function. By investigation of the partition function, I gives a conjecture of the relation of these soliton equations.

Quadratic reductions of quadrilateral lattices

It is shown that quadratic constraints are compatible with the geometric integrability scheme of the multidimensional quadrilateral lattice equation. The corresponding Ribaucour reduction of the fundamental transformation of quadrilateral lattices is found as well, and superposition of the Ribaucour transformations is presented in the vectorial framework. Finally, the quadratic reduction approach is illustrated on the example of multidimensional circular lattices.

On Grassmannian Description of the Constrained KP Hierarchy

This note develops an explicit construction of the constrained KP hierarchy within the Sato Grassmannian framework. Useful relations are established between the kernel elements of the underlying ordinary differential operator and the eigenfunctions of the associated KP hierarchy as well as between the related bilinear concomitant and the squared eigenfunction potential.

Algebraic Solutions of the Multicomponent KP Hierarchy

It is shown that it is possible to write down tau functions for the $n$-component KP hierarchy in terms of non-abelian theta functions. This is a generalization of the rank 1 situation; that is, the relation of theta functions of Jacobians and tau functions for the KP hierarchy.

The continuum limit of sl(N/K) integrable super spin chains

I discuss in this paper the continuum limit of integrable spin chains based on the superalgebras sl(N/K). The general conclusion is that, with the full ``supersymmetry'', none of these models is relativistic. When the supersymmetry is broken by the generator of the sub u(1), Gross Neveu models of various types are obtained. For instance, in the case of sl(N/K) with a typical fermionic representation on every site, the continuum limit is the GN model with N colors and K flavors. In the case of sl(N/1) and atypical representations of spin j, a close cousin of the GN model with N colors, j flavors and flavor anisotropy is obtained. The Dynkin parameter associated with the fermionic root, while providing solutions to the Yang Baxter equation with a continuous parameter, thus does not give rise to any new physics in the field theory limit. These features are generalized to the case where an impurity is embedded in the system.

Confinement, solitons and the equivalence between the sine-Gordon and massive Thirring models

We consider a two-dimensional integrable and conformally invariant field theory possessing two Dirac spinors and three scalar fields. The interaction couples bilinear terms in the spinors to exponentials of the scalars. Its integrability properties are based on the sl(2) affine Kac-Moody algebra, and it is a simple example of the so-called conformal affine Toda theories coupled to matter fields. We show, using bosonization techniques, that the classical equivalence between a U(1) Noether current and the topological current holds true at the quantum level, and then leads to a bag model like mechanism for the confinement of the spinor fields inside the solitons. By bosonizing the spinors we show that the theory decouples into a sine-Gordon model and free scalars. We construct the two-soliton solutions and show that their interactions lead to the same time delays as those for the sine-Gordon solitons. The model provides a good laboratory to test duality ideas in the context of the equivalence between the sine-Gordon and Thirring theories.

On the quantum inverse scattering problem

A general method for solving the so-called quantum inverse scattering problem (namely the reconstruction of local quantum (field) operators in term of the quantum monodromy matrix satisfying a Yang-Baxter quadratic algebra governed by an R-matrix) for a large class of lattice quantum integrable models is given. The principal requirement being the initial condition (R(0) = P, the permutation operator) for the quantum R-matrix solving the Yang-Baxter equation, it applies not only to most known integrable fundamental lattice models (such as Heisenberg spin chains) but also to lattice models with arbitrary number of impurities and to the so-called fused lattice models (including integrable higher spin generalizations of Heisenberg chains). Our method is then applied to several important examples like the sl(n) XXZ model, the XYZ spin-1/2 chain and also to the spin-s Heisenberg chains.

Soliton Cellular Automata Associated With Crystal Bases

We introduce a class of cellular automata associated with crystals of irreducible finite dimensional representations of quantum affine algebras U'_q(\hat{\geh}_n). They have solitons labeled by crystals of the smaller algebra U'_q(\hat{\geh}_{n-1}). We prove stable propagation of one soliton for \hat{\geh}_n = A^{(2)}_{2n-1}, A^{(2)}_{2n}, B^{(1)}_n, C^{(1)}_n, D^{(1)}_n and D^{(2)}_{n+1}. For \gh_n = C^{(1)}_n, we also prove that the scattering matrices of two solitons coincide with the combinatorial R matrices of U'_q(C^{(1)}_{n-1})-crystals.

Integrable Quantum Field Theories in Finite Volume: Excited State Energies

We develop a method of computing the excited state energies in Integrable Quantum Field Theories (IQFT) in finite geometry, with spatial coordinate compactified on a circle of circumference R. The IQFT ``commuting transfer-matrices'' introduced by us (BLZ) for Conformal Field Theories (CFT) are generalized to non-conformal IQFT obtained by perturbing CFT with the operator $Φ_{1,3}$. We study the models in which the fusion relations for these ``transfer-matrices'' truncate and provide closed integral equations which generalize the equations of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz to excited states. The explicit calculations are done for the first excited state in the ``Scaling Lee-Yang Model''.

The free energy singularity of the asymmetric 6--vertex model and the excitations of the asymmetric XXZ chain

We consider the asymmetric six--vertex model, {\it i.e.} the symmetric six--vertex model in an external field with both horizontal and vertical components, and the relevant asymmetric $XXZ$ chain. The model is widely used to describe the equilibrium shape of a crystal. By means of the Bethe Ansatz solution we determine the exact free energy singularity, as function of both components of the field, at two special points on the phase boundary. We confirm the exponent $\frac{3}{2}$ (already checked experimentally), as the antiferroelectric ordered phase is reached from the incommensurate phase normally to the phase boundary, and we determine a new singularity along the tangential direction. Both singularities describe the rounding off of the crystal near a facet. The hole excitations of the spin chain at this point on the phase boundary show dispersion relations with the striking form $ΔE\sim (ΔP)^{\half}$ at small momenta, leading to a finite size scaling $ΔE \sim N^{-\half}$ for the low--lying excited states, where $N$ is the size of the chain. We conjecture that a Pokrovskii--Talapov phase transition is replaced at this point by a transition with diverging correlation length, but not classified in terms of conformal field theory.

The Calogero-Sutherland Model and Polynomials with Prescribed Symmetry

The Schrödinger operators with exchange terms for certain Calogero-Sutherland quantum many body systems have eigenfunctions which factor into the symmetric ground state and a multivariable polynomial. The polynomial can be chosen to have a prescribed symmetry (i.e. be symmetric or antisymmetric) with respect to the interchange of some specified variables. For four particular Calogero-Sutherland systems we construct an eigenoperator for these polynomials which separates the eigenvalues and establishes orthogonality. In two of the cases this involves identifying new operators which commute with the corresponding Schrödinger operators. In each case we express a particular class of the polynomials with prescribed symmetry in a factored form involving the corresponding symmetric polynomials.

Perturbation theory predictions and Monte Carlo simulations for the 2-d O(n) non-linear sigma-model

By using the results of a high-statistics (O(10^7) measurements) Monte Carlo simulation we test several predictions of perturbation theory on the O(n) non-linear sigma-model in 2 dimensions. We study the O(3) and O(8) models on large enough lattices to have a good control on finite-size effects. The magnetic susceptibility and three different definitions of the correlation length are measured. We check our results with large-n expansions as well as with standard formulae for asymptotic freedom up to 4 loops in the standard and effective schemes. For this purpose the weak coupling expansions of the energy up to 4 loops for the standard action and up to 3 loops for the Symanzik action are calculated. For the O(3) model we have used two different effective schemes and checked that they lead to compatible results. A great improvement in the results is obtained by using the effective scheme based on the energy at 3 and 4 loops. We find that the O(8) model follows very nicely (within few per mille) the perturbative predictions. For the O(3) model an acceptable agreement (within few per cent) is found.

Solitonic Integrable Perturbations of Parafermionic Theories

The quantum integrability of a class of massive perturbations of the parafermionic conformal field theories associated to compact Lie groups is established by showing that they have quantum conserved densities of scale dimension 2 and 3. These theories are integrable for any value of a continuous vector coupling constant, and they generalize the perturbation of the minimal parafermionic models by their first thermal operator. The classical equations-of-motion of these perturbed theories are the non-abelian affine Toda equations which admit (charged) soliton solutions whose semi-classical quantization is expected to permit the identification of the exact S-matrix of the theory.

Non linear integral equation and excited--states scaling functions in the sine-Gordon model

The NLIE (the non-linear integral equation equivalent to the Bethe Ansatz equations for finite size) is generalized to excited states, that is states with holes and complex roots over the antiferromagnetic ground state. We consider the sine-Gordon/massive Thirring model (sG/mT) in a periodic box of length $L$ using the light-cone approach, in which the sG/mT model is obtained as the continuum limit of an inhomogeneous six vertex model. This NLIE is an useful starting point to compute the spectrum of excited states both analytically in the large $L$ (perturbative) and small $L$ (conformal) regimes as well as numerically.

Solitons in high-energy QCD

We study the asymptotic solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the color-singlet reggeon compound states in multi-color QCD. We show that in the leading order of asymptotic expansion, quasiclassical reggeon trajectories have a form of the soliton waves propagating on the 2-dimensional plane of transverse coordinates. Applying methods of the finite-gap theory we construct their explicit form in terms of Riemann theta-functions and examine their properties.
