Zero-pole interpolation for matrix meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface, and a matrix Fay trisecant identity

This paper presents a new approach to constructing a meromorphic bundle map between flat vector bundles over a compact Riemann surface having a prescribed Weil divisor (i.e., having prescribed zeros and poles with directional as well as multiplicity information included in the vector case). This new formalism unifies the earlier approach of Ball-Clancey (in the setting of trivial bundles over an abstract Riemann surface) with an earlier approach of the authors (where the Riemann surface was assumed to be the normalizing Riemann surface for an algebraic curve embedded in ${\bold C}^2$ with determinantal representation, and the vector bundles were assumed to be presented as the kernels of linear matrix pencils). The main tool is a version of the Cauchy kernel appropriate for flat vector bundles over the Riemann surface. Our formula for the interpolating bundle map (in the special case of a single zero and a single pole) can be viewed as a generalization of the Fay trisecant identity from the usual line bundle case to the vector bundle case in terms of Cauchy kernels. In particular we obtain a new proof of the Fay trisecant identity.

The L^2 dbar method, weak Lefschetz theorems, and the topology of Kahler manifolds

A new approach to Nori's weak Lefschetz theorem is described. The new approach, which involves the dbar-method, avoids moving arguments and gives much stronger results. In particular, it is proved that if X and Y are connected smooth projective varieties of positive dimension and f is a holomorphic immersion of Y into X with ample normal bundle, then the image of the fundamental group of Y in that of X is of finite index. This result is obtained as a consequence of a direct generalization of Nori's theorem. The second part concerns a new approach to the theorem of Burns which states that a quotient of the unit ball in complex Euclidean space (of dimension at least 3) by a discrete group of automorphisms which has a strongly pseudoconvex boundary component has only finitely many ends. The following generalization is obtained. If a complete Hermitian manifold X of dimension at least 3 has a strongly pseudoconvex end E and the Ricci curvature of X is bounded above by a negative constant, then, away from E, X has finite volume.

A morphism of intersection homology induced by an algebraic map

Let $f:X-->Y$ be a map of algebraic varieties. Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler, Gabber and Kaup have shown that there exists a homomorphism of intersection homology groups $f^*:IH^*(Y)-->IH^*(X)$ compatible with the induced homomorphism on cohomology. The crucial point in the argument is reduction to the finite characteristic. We give an alternative and short proof of the existence of a homomorphism $f^*$. Our construction is an easy application of the Decomposition Theorem.

Toric Degenerations of Fano Varieties and Constructing Mirror Manifolds

For an arbitrary smooth n-dimensional Fano variety $X$ we introduce the notion of a small toric degeneration. Using small toric degenerations of Fano n-folds $X$, we propose a general method for constructing mirrors of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in $X$. Our mirror construction is based on a generalized monomial-divisor mirror correspondence which can be used for computing Gromov-Witten invariants of rational curves via specializations of GKZ-hypergeometric series.

Modular operads

Modular operads are a special type of operad: in fact, they bear the same relationship to operads that graphs do to trees (i.e. simply connected graphs). One of the basic examples of a modular operad is the collection of Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli spaces $\bar{M}_{g,n}$ of stable pointed algebraic curves; hence the word ``modular.'' In this paper, we introduce various constructions on differential graded modular operads, notably a duality which we call the Feynman transform, which extends Kontsevich's graph complexes. Our main result is the calculation of the Euler characteristic of the Feynman transform of a modular operad, using the theory of symmetric functions: the result is a generalization of Wick's theorem for Gaussian integrals.

Equivariant Holomorphic Morse Inequalities I: A Heat Kernel Proof

Assume that the circle group acts holomorphically on a compact Kähler manifold with isolated fixed points and that the action can be lifted holomorphically to a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle. We give a heat kernel proof of the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities. We use some techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau. These inequalities, first obtained by Witten using a different argument, produce bounds on the multiplicities of weights occurring in the twisted Dolbeault cohomologies in terms of the data of the fixed points.

Connectedness of spaces of symplectic embeddings

We prove that the space of symplectic packings of ${\Bbb C}P^2$ by $k$ equal balls is connected for $3\leq k\leq 6$. The proof is based on Gromov-Witten invariants and on the inflation technique due to Lalonde and McDuff.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ may be considered as symplectic counterparts of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ and Kapranov's Chow quotient construction of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$. All these together brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$.

Moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles

The goal of this article was the S^1-equivariant transversality-problem and the compactification-problem for the moduli spaces of (perturbed) PU(2)-monopoles. A substantially improved version entitled "Moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles (revised version)" which gives simpler, clearer proofs of the transversality results, has been published on arxiv in June 99 and appeared in Asian J. Math, see Moduli spaces of PU(2)-Monopoles, Asian J. Math. Vol. 4, No. 2 (2000), 391-436.

Gerstenhaber algebras and BV-algebras in Poisson geometry

The purpose of this paper is to establish an explicit correspondence between various geometric structures on a vector bundle with some well-known algebraic structures such as Gerstenhaber algebras and BV-algebras. Some applications are discussed. In particular, we found an explicit connection between the Koszul-Brylinski operator of a Poisson manifold and its modular class. As a consequence, we prove that Poisson homology is isomorphic to Poisson cohomology for unimodular Poisson structures.

Exterior differential systems: a geometric approach to PDE. Lecture notes from the 1997 Daewoo workshop

This is an elementary introduction to exterior differential systems motivated by two examples: minimal submanifolds and the isometric embedding problem. The two main goals of the lectures are: 1. To explain how to find an appropriate geometric setting for studying a given system of pde. 2. To explain the Cartan algorithm to determine the moduli space of local solutions to any given exterior differential system and an appropriate initial value problem for the system.

Deformations of representations of fundamental groups of open Kaehler manifolds

Given a compact Kaehler manifold, we consider the complement U of a divisor with normal crossings. We study the variety of unitary representations of the fundamental group of U with certain restrictions related to the divisor. We show that the possible singularities of this variety as well as of the corresponding moduli space of irreducible representations are quadratic. In the course of our proof we exhibit a differential graded Lie algebra of which reflects our deformation problem.

Infinite-Dimensional Geometry of the Universal Deformation of the Complex Disk

The universal deformation of the complex disk is studied from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. The structure of a subsymmetric space on the universal deformation is described. The foliation of the universal deformation by subsymmetry mirrors is shown to determine a real polarization. The subject of the paper maybe of interest to specialists in algebraic geometry and representation theory as well as to researchers dealing with mathematical problems of modern quantum field theory. Contents. I. The infinite-dimensional geometry of the flag manifold of the Virasoro-Bott group (the base of the universal deformation of the complex disk). II. The infinite-dimensional geometry of the skeleton of the flag manifold of the Virasoro-Bott group. III. The infinite-dimensional geometry of the universal deformation of the complex disk.

Supermatrix Representations of Semigroup Bands

Various semigroups of noninvertible supermatrices of the special (antitriangle) shape having nilpotent Berezinian which appear in supersymmetric theories are defined and investigated. A subset of them continuously represents left and right zero semigroups and rectangular bands. The ideal properties of higher order rectangular band analogs and the ``wreath'' version of them are studied in detail. We introduce the ``fine'' equivalence relations leading to ``multidimesional'' eggbox diagrams. They are full images of Green's relations on corresponding subsemigroups.

Representation Theory of Analytic Holonomy C* Algebras

Integral calculus on the space of gauge equivalent connections is developed. Loops, knots, links and graphs feature prominently in this description. The framework is well--suited for quantization of diffeomorphism invariant theories of connections. The general setting is provided by the abelian C* algebra of functions on the quotient space of connections generated by Wilson loops (i.e., by the traces of holonomies of connections around closed loops). The representation theory of this algebra leads to an interesting and powerful ``duality'' between gauge--equivalence classes of connections and certain equivalence classes of closed loops. In particular, regular measures on (a suitable completion of) connections/gauges are in 1--1 correspondence with certain functions of loops and diffeomorphism invariant measures correspond to (generalized) knot and link invariants. By carrying out a non--linear extension of the theory of cylindrical measures on topological vector spaces, a faithful, diffeomorphism invariant measure is introduced. This measure can be used to define the Hilbert space of quantum states in theories of connections. The Wilson--loop functionals then serve as the configuration operators in the quantum theory.
