Solutions to sign problems in lattice Yukawa models

We prove that sign problems in the traditional approach to some lattice Yukawa models can be completely solved when the fermions are formulated using fermion bags and the bosons are formulated in the worldline representation. We prove this within the context of two examples of three dimensional models, symmetric under $U_L(1) \times U_R(1) \times Z_2 ({Parity})$ transformations, one involving staggered fermions and the other involving Wilson fermions. We argue that these models have interesting quantum phase transitions that can now be studied using Monte Carlo methods.

Chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement in QCD at finite temperature

The light-quark correlator in the axial-vector channel is used, in conjunction with finite energy QCD sum rules at finite temperature, in order to (a) establish a relation between chiral-symmetry restoration and deconfinement, and (b) determine the temperature behavior of the $a_1(1260)$ width and coupling. Results indicate that deconfinement takes place at a slightly lower temperature than chiral-symmetry restoration, although this difference is not significant given the accuracy of the method. The behaviour of the $a_1(1260)$ parameters is consistent with quark-gluon deconfinement, as the width grows and the coupling decreases with increasing temperature.

Lattice baryons in the 1/N expansion

Results are presented for hadron spectroscopy with gauge groups SU(N) with N=3, 5, 7. Calculations use the quenched approximation. Lattice spacings are matched using the static potential. Meson spectra show independence on N and vacuum-to-hadron matrix elements scale as the square root of N. The baryon spectrum shows the excitation levels of a rigid rotor.

Fluctuations and Correlations of net baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness: A comparison of lattice QCD results with the hadron resonance gas model

We calculate the quadratic fluctuations of net baryon number, electric charge and strangeness as well as correlations among these conserved charges in (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD at zero chemical potential. Results are obtained using calculations with tree level improved gauge and the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) actions with almost physical light and strange quark masses at three different values of the lattice cut-off. Our choice of parameters corresponds to a value of 160 MeV for the lightest pseudo scalar Goldstone mass and a physical value of the kaon mass. The three diagonal charge susceptibilities and the correlations among conserved charges have been extrapolated to the continuum limit in the temperature interval 150 MeV <T < 250 MeV. We compare our results with the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model calculations and find agreement with HRG model results only for temperatures T<= 150 MeV. We observe significant deviations in the temperature range 160 MeV < T < 170 MeV and qualitative differences in the behavior of the three conserved charge sectors. At T < 160 MeV quadratic net baryon number fluctuations in QCD agree with HRG model calculations while, the net electric charge fluctuations in QCD are about 10% smaller and net strangeness fluctuations are about 20% larger. These findings are relevant to the discussion of freeze-out conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Contact Term, its Holographic Description in QCD and Dark Energy

In this work we study the well known contact term, which is the key element in resolving the so-called $U(1)_A$ problem in QCD. We study this term using the dual Holographic Description. We argue that in the dual picture the contact term is saturated by the D2 branes which can be interpreted as the tunnelling events in Minkowski space-time. We quote a number of direct lattice results supporting this identification. We also argue that the contact term receives a Casimir -like correction $\sim (\Lqcd R)^{-1}$ rather than naively expected $\exp(-\Lqcd R)$ when the Minkowski space-time ${\cal R}_{3,1}$ is replaced by a large but finite manifold with a size $R$. Such a behaviour is consistent with other QFT-based computations when power like corrections are due to nontrivial properties of topological sectors of the theory. In holographic description such a behaviour is due to massless Ramond-Ramond (RR) field living in the bulk of multidimensional space when power like corrections is a natural outcome of massless RR field. In many respects the phenomenon is similar to the Aharonov -Casher effect when the "modular electric field" can penetrate into a superconductor where the electric field is exponentially screened. The role of "modular operator" from Aharonov -Casher effect is played by large gauge transformation operator $\cal{T}$ in 4d QCD, resulting the transparency of the system to topologically nontrivial pure gauge configurations. We discuss some profound consequences of our findings. In particular, we speculate that a slow variation of the contact term in expanding universe might be the main source of the observed Dark Energy.

Polyakov Loop and Gluon Quasiparticles in Yang-Mills Thermodynamics

We study the interpretation of Lattice data about the thermodynamics of the deconfinement phase of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, in terms of gluon quasiparticles propagating in a background of a Polyakov loop. A potential for the Polyakov loop, inspired by the strong coupling expansion of the QCD action, is introduced; the Polyakov loop is coupled to tranverse gluon quasiparticles by means of a gas-like effective potential. This study is useful to identify the effective degrees of freedom propagating in the gluon medium above the critical temperature. A main general finding is that a dominant part of the phase transition dynamics is accounted for by the Polyakov loop dynamics, hence the thermodynamics can be described without the need for diverging or exponentially increasing quasiparticle masses as $T \rightarrow T_c$, at variance respect to standard quasiparticle models.

Wilson loops to 20th order numerical stochastic perturbation theory

We calculate Wilson loops of various sizes up to 20 loops in SU(3) pure lattice gauge theory at different lattice sizes for Wilson gauge action using the technique of numerical stochastic perturbation theory. This allows us to investigate the perturbative series for various Wilson loops at high loop orders. We observe differences in the behavior of those series as function of the loop order. Up to $n=20$ we do not find evidence for the factorial growth of the expansion coefficients often assumed to characterize an asymptotic series. Based on the actually observed behavior we sum the series in a model parametrized by hypergeometric functions. Alternatively we estimate the total series in boosted perturbation theory using information from the first 14 loops. We introduce generalized ratios of Wilson loops of different sizes. Together with the corresponding Wilson loops from standard Monte Carlo measurements they enable us to assess their non-perturbative parts.

_{u-d} from lattice QCD at nearly physical quark masses

We determine the second Mellin moment of the isovector quark parton distribution function _{u-d} from lattice QCD with N_f=2 sea quark flavours, employing the non-perturbatively improved Wilson-Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action at a pseudoscalar mass of 157(6) MeV. The result is converted non-perturbatively to the RI'-MOM scheme and then perturbatively to the MSbar scheme at a scale mu = 2 GeV. As the quark mass is reduced we find the lattice prediction to approach the value extracted from experiments.

Lattice study of conformality in twelve-flavor QCD

We study infrared conformality of the twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice. Utilizing the highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of a pseudoscalar meson and the mass of a vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. Our result is consistent with the conformal hypothesis for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$.

Lattice QCD at non-zero isospin chemical potential

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at non-zero isospin chemical potential is studied in a canonical approach by analyzing systems of fixed isospin number density. To construct these systems, we develop a range of new algorithms for performing the factorially large numbers of Wick contractions required in multi-hadron systems. We then use these methods to study systems with the quantum numbers of up to 72 $π^+$'s on three ensembles of gauge configurations with spatial extents $L\sim$ 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 fm, and light quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of {390 MeV}. The ground state energies of these systems are extracted and the volume dependence of these energies is utilized to determine the two- and three- body interactions amongst $π^+$'s. The systems studied correspond to isospin densities of up to $ρ_I\sim 9\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$ and probe isospin chemical potentials, $μ_I$, in the range $m_π \lsim μ_I\ \lsim 4.5\ m_π$, allowing us to investigate aspects of the QCD phase diagram at low temperature and for varying isospin chemical potential. By studying the energy density of the system, we provide numerical evidence for the conjectured transition of the system to a Bose-Einstein condensed phase at $μ_I\ \gsim m_π$.

|V_cd| from D Meson Leptonic Decays

We present an update of the D meson decay constant f_D using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action for valence charm and light quarks on MILC N_f = 2+1 lattices. The new determination incorporates HPQCD's improved scale r_1^{N_f = 2+1} = 0.3133(23) fm, accurately retuned bare charm quark masses and data from an ensemble that is more chiral than in our previous calculations. We find f_D = 208.3(3.4) MeV. Combining the new f_D with D -> μν branching fraction data from CLEO-c, we extract the CKM matrix element |V_cd| = 0.223(10)_{exp.}(4)_{lat.}. This value is in excellent agreement with |V_cd| from D semileptonic decays and from neutrino scattering experiments and has comparable total errors. We determine the ratio between semileptonic form factor and decay constant and find [f^{D -> π}_+(0) / f_D ]_{lat.} = 3.20(15) GeV^{-1} to be compared with the experimental value of [f^{D -> π}_+(0) / f_D ]_{exp.} = 3.19(18) GeV^{-1}. Finally, we mention recent preliminary but already more accurate D -> μν branching fraction measurements from BES III and discuss their impact on precision |V_cd| determinations in the future.

UV Cascade in Classical Yang-Mills Theory

We study the real-time behavior of classical Yang-Mills theory under initial conditions with nonperturbatively large, infrared field amplitudes. Our lattice study confirms the cascade of energy towards higher momenta and lower occupancy, which occurs via a scaling solution $f[p,t_1] = (t_0/t_1)^{4/7}\, f[p (t_0/t_1)^{1/7},t_0]$. Above a characteristic scale p_{max}, f falls exponentially; below p_{max}, $f[p] \propto p^{-4/3}$. We find no evidence for different infrared exponents or for infrared occupancies in excess of those described by this scaling solution. We also investigate what the fate of large occupancies would be, both in the electric and the magnetic sector.

Parton-distribution functions for the pion and kaon in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model

We investigate the parton-distribution functions (PDFs) for the positively charged pion and kaon at a low-renormalization scale ~ 1 GeV. To this end, we employ the gauge-invariant effective chiral action from the nonlocal chiral-quark model, resulting in that the vector currents are conserved. All the model parameters are determined phenomenologically with the normalization condition for PDF and the empirical values for the pseudoscalar-meson weak-decay constants. We consider the momentum dependence of the effective quark mass properly within the model calculations. It turns out that the leading local contribution provides about 70 % of the total strength for PDF, whereas the nonlocal one that is newly taken into account in this work for the gauge invariance does the rest. High-Q^2 evolution to 27 GeV^2 is performed for valance-quark distribution function (VQDF), using the DGALP equation. The moments for the pion and kaon VQDFs are also computed. The numerical results are compared with the empirical data and theoretical estimations, and show qualitatively agreement with them.

Over-populated gauge fields on the lattice

We study nonequilibrium dynamics of SU(2) pure gauge theory starting from initial over-population, where intense classical gauge fields are characterized by a single momentum scale Q_s. Classical-statistical lattice simulations indicate a quick evolution towards an approximate scaling behavior with exponent 3/2 at intermediate times. Remarkably, the value for the scaling exponent may be understood as arising from the leading O(g^2) contribution in the presence of a time-dependent background field. The phenomenon is associated to weak wave turbulence describing an energy cascade towards higher momenta. This particular aspect is very similar to what is observed for scalar theories, where an effective cubic interaction arises because of the presence of a time-dependent Bose condensate.

Mean field theory of effective spin models as a baryon fugacity expansion

The free energy of effective spin or "Polyakov line" models with a chemical potential, based on the U(N) group, does not depend on the chemical potential. In a mean field-inspired expansion, we show how the condition of unit determinant, taking U(N) to SU(N), reintroduces the chemical potential, and allows us to express the free energy, as a function of mean field variational parameters, in terms of an expansion in the baryon (rather than the quark) fugacity at each lattice site. We solve the SU(3) mean field equations numerically to determine the phase diagram and compute observables. We also calculate the first corrections to the leading order mean field results, and find that these can significantly shift the endpoint of a line of first order transitions. The problem of deriving an effective spin model from full QCD is discussed.

Heavy meson masses and decay constants from relativistic heavy quarks in full lattice QCD

We determine masses and decay constants of heavy-heavy and heavy-charm pseudoscalar mesons as a function of heavy quark mass using a fully relativistic formalism known as Highly Improved Staggered Quarks for the heavy quark. We are able to cover the region from the charm quark mass to the bottom quark mass using MILC ensembles with lattice spacing values from 0.15 fm down to 0.044 fm. We obtain f_{B_c} = 0.427(6) GeV; m_{B_c} = 6.285(10) GeV and f_{η_b} = 0.667(6) GeV. Our value for f_{η_b} is within a few percent of f_Υ confirming that spin effects are surprisingly small for heavyonium decay constants. Our value for f_{B_c} is significantly lower than potential model values being used to estimate production rates at the LHC. We discuss the changing physical heavy-quark mass dependence of decay constants from heavy-heavy through heavy-charm to heavy-strange mesons. A comparison between the three different systems confirms that the B_c system behaves in some ways more like a heavy-light system than a heavy-heavy one. Finally we summarise current results on decay constants of gold-plated mesons.

Accessing High Momentum States In Lattice QCD

Two measures are defined to evaluate the coupling strength of smeared interpolating operators to hadronic states at a variety of momenta. Of particular interest is the extent to which strong overlap can be obtained with individual high-momentum states. This is vital to exploring hadronic structure at high momentum transfers on the lattice and addressing interesting phenomena observed experimentally. We consider a novel idea of altering the shape of the smeared operator to match the Lorentz contraction of the probability distribution of the high-momentum state, and show a reduction in the relative error of the two-point function by employing this technique. Our most important finding is that the overlap of the states becomes very sharp in the smearing parameters at high momenta and fine tuning is required to ensure strong overlap with these states.
