The Andrews-Gordon identities and $q$-multinomial coefficients

We prove polynomial boson-fermion identities for the generating function of the number of partitions of $n$ of the form $n=\sum_{j=1}^{L-1} j f_j$, with $f_1\leq i-1$, $f_{L-1} \leq i'-1$ and $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq k$. The bosonic side of the identities involves $q$-deformations of the coefficients of $x^a$ in the expansion of $(1+x+\cdots+ x^k)^L$. A combinatorial interpretation for these $q$-multinomial coefficients is given using Durfee dissection partitions. The fermionic side of the polynomial identities arises as the partition function of a one-dimensional lattice-gas of fermionic particles. In the limit $L\to\infty$, our identities reproduce the analytic form of Gordon's generalization of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities, as found by Andrews. Using the $q \to 1/q$ duality, identities are obtained for branching functions corresponding to cosets of type $({\rm A}^{(1)}_1)_k \times ({\rm A}^{(1)}_1)_{\ell} / ({\rm A}^{(1)}_1)_{k+\ell}$ of fractional level $\ell$.

Higher-order simple Lie algebras

It is shown that the non-trivial cocycles on simple Lie algebras may be used to introduce antisymmetric multibrackets which lead to higher-order Lie algebras, the definition of which is given. Their generalised Jacobi identities turn out to be satisfied by the antisymmetric tensors (or higher-order `structure constants') which characterise the Lie algebra cocycles. This analysis allows us to present a classification of the higher-order simple Lie algebras as well as a constructive procedure for them. Our results are synthesised by the introduction of a single, complete BRST operator associated with each simple algebra.

The universal Vassiliev invariant for the Lie superalgebra gl(1|1)

We compute the universal weight system for Vassiliev invariants coming from the Lie superalgebra gl(1|1) applying the construction of \cite{YB}. This weight system is a function from the space of chord diagrams to the center $Z$ of the universal enveloping algebra of gl(1|1), and we find a combinatorial expression for it in terms of the standard generators of $Z$. The resulting knot invariants generalize the Alexander-Conway polynomial.

$q$-Gaussian processes: non-commutative and classical aspects

We examine, for $-1<q<1$, $q$-Gaussian processes, i.e. families of operators (non-commutative random variables) $X_t=a_t+a_t^*$ -- where the $a_t$ fulfill the $q$-commutation relations $a_sa_t^*-qa_t^*a_s=c(s,t)\cdot \id$ for some covariance function $c(\cdot,\cdot)$ -- equipped with the vacuum expectation state. We show that there is a $q$-analogue of the Gaussian functor of second quantization behind these processes and that this structure can be used to translate questions on $q$-Gaussian processes into corresponding (and much simpler) questions in the underlying Hilbert space. In particular, we use this idea to show that a large class of $q$-Gaussian processes possess a non-commutative kind of Markov property, which ensures that there exist classical versions of these non-commutative processes. This answers an old question of Frisch and Bourret \cite{FB}.

Equivalence of Two Approaches to the mKdV Hierarchies

The equivalence between the approaches of Drinfeld-Sokolov and Feigin-Frenkel to the mKdV hierarchies is established. A new derivation of the mKdV equations in the zero curvature form is given. Connection with the Baker-Akhiezer function and the tau-function is also discussed.

Skew Young diagram method in spectral decomposition of integrable lattice models

The spectral decomposition of the path space of the vertex model associated to the vector representation of the quantized affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_n)$ is studied. We give a one-to-one correspondence between the spin configurations and the semi-standard tableaux of skew Young diagrams. As a result we obtain a formula of the characters for the degeneracy of the spectrum in terms of skew Schur functions. We conjecture that our result describes the $sl_n$-module contents of the Yangian $Y(sl_n)$-module structures of the level 1 integrable modules of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{sl}_n$. An analogous result is obtained also for a vertex model associated to the quantized twisted affine algebra $U_q(A^{(2)}_{2n})$, where $Y(B_n)$ characters appear for the degeneracy of the spectrum. The relation to the spectrum of the Haldane-Shastry and the Polychronakos models are also discussed.

Variational derivation of exact skein relations from Chern--Simons theories

The expectation value of a Wilson loop in a Chern--Simons theory is a knot invariant. Its skein relations have been derived in a variety of ways, including variational methods in which small deformations of the loop are made and the changes evaluated. The latter method only allowed to obtain approximate expressions for the skein relations. We present a generalization of this idea that allows to compute the exact form of the skein relations. Moreover, it requires to generalize the resulting knot invariants to intersecting knots and links in a manner consistent with the Mandelstam identities satisfied by the Wilson loops. This allows for the first time to derive the full expression for knot invariants that are suitable candidates for quantum states of gravity (and supergravity) in the loop representation. The new approach leads to several new insights in intersecting knot theory, in particular the role of non-planar intersections and intersections with kinks.

Quantum Lie algebras; their existence, uniqueness and $q$-antisymmetry

Quantum Lie algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras which have the quantum parameter h built into their structure. They have been defined concretely as certain submodules of the quantized enveloping algebras. On them the quantum Lie bracket is given by the quantum adjoint action. Here we define for any finite-dimensional simple complex Lie algebra g an abstract quantum Lie algebra g_h independent of any concrete realization. Its h-dependent structure constants are given in terms of inverse quantum Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. We then show that all concrete quantum Lie algebras are isomorphic to an abstract quantum Lie algebra g_h. In this way we prove two important properties of quantum Lie algebras: 1) all quantum Lie algebras associated to the same g are isomorphic, 2) the quantum Lie bracket of any quantum Lie algebra is $q$-antisymmetric. We also describe a construction of quantum Lie algebras which establishes their existence.

Quantum Deformation of Lattice Gauge Theory

A quantum deformation of 3-dimensional lattice gauge theory is defined by applying the Reshetikhin-Turaev functor to a Heegaard diagram associated to a given cell complex. In the root-of-unity case, the construction is carried out with a modular Hopf algebra. In the topological (weak-coupling) limit, the gauge theory partition function gives a 3-fold invariant, coinciding in the simplicial case with the Turaev-Viro one. We discuss bounded manifolds as well as links in manifolds. By a dimensional reduction, we obtain a q-deformed gauge theory on Riemann surfaces and find a connection with the algebraic Alekseev-Grosse-Schomerus approach.

Quantum Chains of Hopf Algebras with Quantum Double Cosymmetry

Given a finite dimensional C^*-Hopf algebra H and its dual H^ we construct the infinite crossed product A=... x H x H^ x H ... and study its superselection sectors in the framework of algebraic quantum field theory. A is the observable algebra of a generalized quantum spin chain with H-order and H^-disorder symmetries, where by a duality transformation the role of order and disorder may also appear interchanged. If H=\CC G is a group algebra then A becomes an ordinary G-spin model. We classify all DHR-sectors of A --- relative to some Haag dual vacuum representation --- and prove that their symmetry is described by the Drinfeld double D(H). To achieve this we construct localized coactions ρ: A \to (A \otimes D(H)) and use a certain compressibility property to prove that they are universal amplimorphisms on A. In this way the double D(H) can be recovered from the observable algebra A as a universal cosymmetrty.

Vassiliev knot invariants and Chern-Simons perturbation theory to all orders

At any order, the perturbative expansion of the expectation values of Wilson lines in Chern-Simons theory gives certain integral expressions. We show that they all lead to knot invariants. Moreover these are finite type invariants whose order coincides with the order in the perturbative expansion. Together they combine to give a universal Vassiliev invariant.

On Casimir's Ghost

We define on the universal enveloping superalgebra of osp(1|2n) a nonstandard adjoint action, endowing it with a module structure. This allows, in particular, to construct a bosonic operator which anticommutes with all the fermionic generators and which appears to be the square root of a certain Casimir operator.

Quantum Integrable Systems and Elliptic Solutions of Classical Discrete Nonlinear Equations

Functional relation for commuting quantum transfer matrices of quantum integrable models is identified with classical Hirota's bilinear difference equation. This equation is equivalent to the completely discretized classical 2D Toda lattice with open boundaries. The standard objects of quantum integrable models are identified with elements of classical nonlinear integrable difference equation. In particular, elliptic solutions of Hirota's equation give complete set of eigenvalues of the quantum transfer matrices. Eigenvalues of Baxter's $Q$-operator are solutions to the auxiliary linear problems for classical Hirota's equation. The elliptic solutions relevant to Bethe ansatz are studied. The nested Bethe ansatz equations for $A_{k-1}$-type models appear as discrete time equations of motions for zeros of classical $τ$-functions and Baker-Akhiezer functions. Determinant representations of the general solution to bilinear discrete Hirota's equation and a new determinant formula for eigenvalues of the quantum transfer matrices are obtained.

Semiinfinite cohomology of quantum groups

In this paper we develop a new homology theory of associative algebras called semiinfinite cohomology in a derived category setting. We show that in the case of small quantum groups the zeroth semiinfinite cohomology of the trivial module is closely related to the conformal blocks' spaces. We provide a description of the semiinfinite cohomology spaces of the trivial module over a small quantum group in terms of distributions on the nilpotent cone of the corresponding semisimple Lie algebra.

Primitive Vassiliev Invariants and Factorization in Chern-Simons Perturbation Theory

The general structure of the perturbative expansion of the vacuum expectation value of a Wilson line operator in Chern-Simons gauge field theory is analyzed. The expansion is organized according to the independent group structures that appear at each order. It is shown that the analysis is greatly simplified if the group factors are chosen in a certain way that we call canonical. This enables us to show that the logarithm of a polinomial knot invariant can be written in terms of primitive Vassiliev invariants only.

Completely Integrable Equation for the Quantum Correlation Function of Nonlinear Schrödinger Eqaution

Correlation functions of exactly solvable models can be described by differential equation [Barough, McCoy, Wu]. In this paper we show that for non free fermionic case differential equations should be replaced by integro-differential equations. We derive an integro-differential equation, which describes time and temperature dependent correlation function $<ψ(0,0)ψ^\dagger(x,t)>_T$ of penetrable Bose gas. The integro-differential equation turns out be the continuum generalization of classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Wakimoto realizations of current algebras: an explicit construction

A generalized Wakimoto realization of $\widehat{\cal G}_K$ can be associated with each parabolic subalgebra ${\cal P}=({\cal G}_0 +{\cal G}_+)$ of a simple Lie algebra ${\cal G}$ according to an earlier proposal by Feigin and Frenkel. In this paper the proposal is made explicit by developing the construction of Wakimoto realizations from a simple but unconventional viewpoint. An explicit formula is derived for the Wakimoto current first at the Poisson bracket level by Hamiltonian symmetry reduction of the WZNW model. The quantization is then performed by normal ordering the classical formula and determining the required quantum correction for it to generate $\widehat{\cal G}_K$ by means of commutators. The affine-Sugawara stress-energy tensor is verified to have the expected quadratic form in the constituents, which are symplectic bosons belonging to ${\cal G}_+$ and a current belonging to ${\cal G}_0$. The quantization requires a choice of special polynomial coordinates on the big cell of the flag manifold $P\backslash G$. The effect of this choice is investigated in detail by constructing quantum coordinate transformations. Finally, the explicit form of the screening charges for each generalized Wakimoto realization is determined, and some applications are briefly discussed.
