CP_N Solitons in Quantum Hall Systems

We will present here an elementary pedagogical introduction to $CP_N$ solitons in quantum Hall systems. We begin with a brief introduction to both $CP_N$ models and to quantum Hall (QH) physics. Then we focus on spin and layer-spin degrees of freedom in QH systems and point out that these are in fact $CP_N$ fields for N=1 and N=3. Excitations in these degrees of freedom will be shown to be topologically non-trivial soliton solutions of the corresponding $CP_N$ field equations. This is followed by a brief summary of our own recent work in this area, done with Sankalpa Ghosh. [ Invited Plenary Lecture at the International Conference on Geometry, Integrability and Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter & Soft Condensed Matter Physics held at Bansko, Bulgaria, July 15-20, 2001. ]

Quantum Antiferromagnets in Two Dimensions

These are lectures presented at the summer course on ``Low Dimensional Quantum Field Theories for Condensed Matter Physicists'', 24 Aug. to 4 Sep. 1992, Trieste, Italy. I review recent work, performed in collaboration primarily with N. Read and Jinwu Ye, on the properties of quantum antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The emphasis is on the properties of the antiferromagnet in states which do not have any long-range magnetic order. The universal spin dynamics in the quantum critical region of number of frustrated and random antiferromagnets is studied; implications for neutron scattering experiments in the lightly-doped cuprates are noted. The nature of the quantum-disordered phase of non-random frustrated antiferromagnets is examined in some detail: the states found have ({\em i\/}) collinear spin correlations, spin-Peierls or valence-bond-solid order, and confined spinons, order and confined spinons or ({\em ii\/}) coplanar spin correlations, no spin-Peierls order and deconfined bosonic spinons.

A simple solid-on-solid model of epitaxial film growth: submonolayer substrate coverage

In this work we investigate influence of substrate temperature on the surface morphology for substrate coverage below one monolayer. The model of film growth is based on random deposition enriched by limited surface diffusion. Also anisotropy in the growth is involved. We found from computer simulations for simple cubic lattice and solid-on-solid model, that the surface morphology changes with increasing temperature from isotropically distributed isolated small islands, through anisotropic 1-D stripes to larger 2-D anisotropic islands and again randomly distributed single atoms. The transition is also marked in height-height correlation function dependence on temperature, as directly seen by snapshots from simulations. The results are in good qualitative agreement with already published results of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, as well as with some experimental data.

Boolean derivatives and computation of cellular automata

The derivatives of a Boolean function are defined up to any order. The Taylor and MacLaurin expansions of a Boolean function are thus obtained. The last corresponds to the ring sum expansion (RSE) of a Boolean function, and is a more compact form than the usual canonical disjunctive form. For totalistic functions the RSE allows the saving of a large number of Boolean operations. The algorithm has natural applications to the simulations of cellular automata using the multi site coding technique. Several already published algorithms are analized, and expressions with fewer terms are generally found.

Fluctuating Interfaces, Surface Tension, and Capillary Waves: An Introduction

We present an introduction to modern theories of interfacial fluctuations and the associated interfacial parameters: surface tension and surface stiffness, as well as their interpretation within the capillary wave model. Transfer matrix spectrum properties due to fluctuation of an interface in a long-cylinder geometry are reviewed. The roughening transition and properties of rigid interfaces below the roughening temperature in 3d lattice models are surveyed with emphasis on differences in fluctuations and transfer matrix spectral properties of rigid vs. rough interfaces.

Power Laws are Logarithmic Boltzmann Laws

Multiplicative random processes in (not necessaryly equilibrium or steady state) stochastic systems with many degrees of freedom lead to Boltzmann distributions when the dynamics is expressed in terms of the logarithm of the normalized elementary variables. In terms of the original variables this gives a power-law distribution. This mechanism implies certain relations between the constraints of the system, the power of the distribution and the dispersion law of the fluctuations. These predictions are validated by Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data. We speculate that stochastic multiplicative dynamics might be the natural origin for the emergence of criticality and scale hierarchies without fine-tuning.

Second-Order Dynamics in the Collective Evolution of Coupled Maps and Automata

We review recent numerical studies and the phenomenology of spatially synchronized collective states in many-body dynamical systems. These states exhibit thermodynamic noise superimposed on the collective, quasiperiodic order parameter evolution with typically one basic irrational frequency. We concentrate on the description of the global temporal properties in terms of second-order difference equations.

Partially Solvable Anisotropic t-J Model with Long-Range Interactions

A new anisotropic t-J model in one dimension is proposed which has long-range hopping and exchange. This t-J model is only partially solvable in contrast to known integrable models with long-range interaction. In the high-density limit the model reduces to the XXZ chain with the long-range exchange. Some exact eigenfunctions are shown to be of Jastrow-type if certain conditions for an anisotropy parameter are satisfied. The ground state as well as the excitation spectrum for various cases of the anisotropy parameter and filling are derived numerically. It is found that the Jastrow-type wave function is an excellent trial function for any value of the anisotropy parameter.

Detection of pairing from the extended Aharonov-Bohm period in strongly correlated electron systems

Inspired from Sutherland's work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 74}, 816 (1995)] on detecting bound spin waves, we propose that bound electron states can be detected from the dependence of interacting electron systems to the Aharonov-Bohm flux in the `extended zone' scheme, where the electron pairing halves the original period $N_a$ flux quanta in a system of linear size $N_a$. Along with the Bethe-ansatz analysis, a numerical implementation for keeping track of the adiabatic flow of energy levels is applied to the attractive/repulsive Hubbard models and the $t-J$ ladder.

Spin Gap of Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnet Representing CaV$_4$O$_9$

We examined a two-dimensional Heisenberg model with two kinds of exchange energies, $J_e$ and $J_c$. This model describes localized spins at vanadium ions in a layer of CaV$_4$O$_9$, for which a spin gap is found by a recent experiment. Comparing the high temperature expansion of the magnetic susceptibility to experimental data, we determined the exchange energies as $J_e \simeq$ 610 K and $J_c \simeq$ 150 K. By the numerical diagonalization we estimated the spin gap as $Δ\sim 0.2J_e \simeq$ 120 K, which consists with the experimental value 107 K. Frustration by finite $J_c$ enhances the spin gap.

Hidden Orders and RVB Formation of the Four-Leg Heisenberg Ladder Model

The ground state of the four-chain Heisenberg ladder model is numerically investigated. Hidden-order correlations suitable for the system are introduced and calculated with an emphasis on the spatially isotropic point, where a corresponding material exists. The existence of a long-range hidden correlation indicates formation of a short-range RVB state in the case of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. A transition between the phase of the ferromagnetic inter-chain coupling and that of the antiferromagnetic one is discussed.

Haldane Gap and Hidden Order in the S=2 Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chain

We have investigated Haldane's conjecture for the S=2 isotropic antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with nearest-neighbor exchange J. Using a density matrix renormalization group algorithm for chains up to L=350 spins, we find in the thermodynamic limit a finite spin gap of Delta = 0.085(5)J and a finite spin-spin correlation length xi = 49(1) lattice spacings. We establish the ground state energy per bond to be E_0=-4.761248(1)J. We show that the ground state has a hidden topological order that is revealed in a nonlocal string correlation function. This means that the physics of the S=2 chain can be captured by a valence-bond solid description. We also observe effective free spin-1 states at the ends of an open S=2 chain.

Two-Dimensional Electrons in a Strong Magnetic Field with Disorder: Divergence of the Localization Length

Electrons on a square lattice with half a flux quantum per plaquette are considered. An effective description for the current loops is given by a two-dimensional Dirac theory with random mass. It is shown that the conductivity and the localization length can be calculated from a product of Dirac Green's functions with the {\it same} frequency. This implies that the delocalization of electrons in a magnetic field is due to a critical point in a phase with a spontaneously broken discrete symmetry. The estimation of the localization length is performed for a generalized model with $N$ fermion levels using a $1/N$--expansion and the Schwarz inequality. An argument for the existence of two Hall transition points is given in terms of percolation theory.

Pair correlation functions in one-dimensional correlated-hopping models

We investigate ground-state properties of two correlated-hopping electron models, the Hirsch and the Bariev model. Both models are of recent interest in the context of hole superconductivity. Applying the Lanczos technique to small clusters, we numerically determine the binding energy, the spin gaps, correlation functions, and other properties for various values of the bond-charge interaction parameter. Our results for small systems indicate that pairing is favoured in a certain parameter range. However, in contrast to the Bariev model, superconducting correlations are suppressed in the Hirsch model, for a bond-charge repulsion larger than a critical value.

Analytical Results for Random Band Matrices with Preferential Basis

Using the supersymmetry method we analytically calculate the local density of states, the localiztion length, the generalized inverse participation ratios, and the distribution function of eigenvector components for the superposition of a random band matrix with a strongly fluctuating diagonal matrix. In this way we extend previously known results for ordinary band matrices to the class of random band matrices with preferential basis. Our analytical results are in good agreement with (but more general than) recent numerical findings by Jacquod and Shepelyansky.

Stability of the Bragg glass phase in a layered geometry

We study the stability of the dislocation-free Bragg glass phase in a layered geometry consisting of coupled parallel planes of d=1+1 vortex lines lying within each plane, in the presence of impurity disorder. Using renormalization group, replica variational calculations and physical arguments we show that at temperatures $T<T_G$ the 3D Bragg glass phase is always stable for weak disorder. It undergoes a weakly first order transition into a decoupled 2D vortex glass upon increase of disorder.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Composite Fermions in Nanostructures

We outline a theory describing the quasi-classical dynamics of composite fermions in the fractional quantum Hall regime in the potentials of arbitrary nanostructures. By an appropriate parametrization of time we show that their trajectories are independent of their mass and dispersion. This allows to study the dynamics in terms of an effective Hamiltonian although the actual dispersion is as yet unknown. The applicability of the theory is verified in the case of antidot arrays where it explains details of magnetoresistance measurements and thus confirms the existence of these quasiparticles.

Phase transition in a spring-block model of surface fracture

A simple and robust spring-block model obeying threshold dynamics is introduced to study surface fracture of an overlayer subject to stress induced by adhesion to a substrate. We find a novel phase transition in the crack morphology and fragment-size statistics when the strain and the substrate coupling are varied. Across the transition, the cracks display in succession short-range, power-law and long-range correlations. The study of stress release prior to cracking yields useful information on the cracking process.
