Limitations of the hybrid functional approach to electronic structure of transition metal oxides

During the last decade, ab initio methods to calculate electronic structure of materials based on hybrid functionals are increasingly becoming widely popular. In this Letter, we show that, in the case of small gap transition metal oxides, such as VO2, with rather subtle physics in the vicinity of the Fermi-surface, such hybrid functional schemes without the inclusion of "expensive" fully self-consistent GW corrections fail to yield this physics and incorrectly describe the features of the wave function of states near the Fermi-surface. While a fully self-consistent GW on top of hybrid functional approach does correct these wave functions as expected, and is found to be in general agreement with the results of a fully self-consistent GW approach based on semilocal functionals, it is much more computationally demanding as compared to the latter approach for the benefit of essentially the same results.

Multi-orbital Cluster Perturbation Theory for transition metal oxides

We present an extension of Cluster Perturbation Theory to include many body correlations associated to local e-e repulsion in real materials. We show that this approach can describe the physics of complex correlated materials where different atomic species and different orbitals coexist. The prototypical case of MnO is considered.

Condensed Matter Applications of Entanglement Theory

These are lecture notes from the 44th IFF Spring School "Quantum Information Processing" in Juelich, discussing applications of entanglement theory in condensed matter. The focus of the notes is on tensor network states, in particular Matrix Product States (MPS) and Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), which provide an efficient description of many-body states based on their entanglement structure; both numerical and analytical aspects of tensor networks are being covered. The notes close with a brief introduction to quantum complexity, which allows to assess the limitations to our ability to simulate quantum many-body systems.

Effective interaction in an unbalanced Fermion mixture

A one dimensional Fermi mixture with delta--interaction is investigated in the limit of extreme imbalance. In particular we consider the cases of only one or two minority Fermions which interact with the Fermi-sea of the majority Fermions. We calculate dispersion relation and polaron mass for the minority Fermions as well as equal time density-density correlators. Within a cluster expansion we derive an expression for the effective interaction potential between minority Fermions. For our calculations we use a reformulation of the exact wave functions, originally obtained by Yang and Gaudin by a nested Bethe ansatz, in terms of determinants.

Impact of sintering temperature on room temperature magneto-resistive and magneto-caloric properties of Pr2/3Sr1/3MnO3

Magneto-resistive and magneto-caloric properties of polycrystalline Pr2/3Sr1/3MnO3 have been studied as a function of sintering temperature (Ts) between 1260-1450°C. Reitveld refinement of their X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirms their single phase crystalline structure with orthorhombic Pbnm space group. The point of maximum value of temperature coefficient of resistance (TCRmax) and Curie temperature (Tc) decreased slightly with Ts. Magneto-resistance (MR) and magnetic entropy (ΔSM) increased markedly with sintering temperature. This could be attributed to the observed sharpness of both the magnetic and resistive transitions due to better grain connectivity. Optimum results are obtained for the sample with Ts = 1400°C. MR at Tc of the same is found to be as large as 32% at 1T and 58% at 5T magnetic fields. The maximum entropy change (ΔSMmax) near its Tc is 2.3Jkg-1K-1 and 7.8 Jkg-1K-1 upon 1T and 5T fields change respectively. These characteristics [MR (32% 1T, 58% 5T) and reasonable change in magnetic entropy (7.8Jkg-1K-1, 5T)] generate possibility that the optimized compound can be used as a potential magnetic refrigerant close to room temperature.

Magnetic and transport parameters of LSMO and YBCO/LSMO films deposited on sapphire substrates

The La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) layers and YBa2Cu3O7-δ/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (YBCO/LSMO) bilayers were grown by magnetron sputtering on sapphire (Al2O3 or ALO) substrates. Temperature dependences of resistance of single LSMO films, grown on ALO substrates were typical for polycrystalline manganite materials and the resistance decreased with decrease of the temperature at medium temperatures and increased at lower and higher temperatures. Deposition of a top YBCO layer led to a drastic increase of the sample resistance. These bilayers did not demonstrate a decreasing of the resistance with decrease of temperature. Temperature dependence of the resistance of these samples was interpreted in the framework of a phenomenological model of two intergrain conduction channels. In framework of this model, parameters of the samples were determined and discussed.

Field-induced magnetic structures in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid under field H || [111]

We have studied the field-induced magnetic structures of Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction under a field applied along the [111] local anisotropy axis, up to H=12T and down to T=40mK. We collected a hundred magnetic Bragg peaks for each field and temperature value and refined the magnetic structures with k=0 propagation vector by performing a symmetry analysis in the space group R-3m, reducing the number of free parameters to three only. We observe a gradual reorientation of the Tb magnetic moments towards the field direction, close to a "3-in, 1-out / 1-in, 3-out" spin structure in the whole field range 0.05-12T. We perform a quantitative comparison with mean-field calculations and we propose the presence of a low-temperature dynamic symmetry breaking of the local trigonal symmetry, akin to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, i.e. preserving the overall cubic symmetry. We discuss the possible origin of this off-diagonal mixing term in the crystal field hamiltonian in terms of quadrupole-quadrupole interaction or magneto-elastic effects.

Electrons turn into anyons under an elastic membrane

We show that electrons acquire anyonic statistics if a two-dimensional electron gas is placed in proximity to a charged magnetic membrane. In this two-layered system, electrons become anyons through electromagnetic field mediated interactions with a membrane phonon. The statistical parameter is irrational and depends on the membrane tension and on the electric charge and magnetic dipolar densities on the membrane. We propose a measurement that yields the value of the statistical parameter.

Quantum critical Kondo destruction in the Bose-Fermi Kondo model with a local transverse field

Recent studies of the global phase diagram of quantum-critical heavy-fermion metals prompt consideration of the interplay between the Kondo interactions and quantum fluctuations of the local moments alone. Toward this goal, we study a Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM) with Ising anisotropy in the presence of a local transverse field that generates quantum fluctuations in the local-moment sector. We apply the numerical renormalization-group method to the case of a sub-Ohmic bosonic bath exponent and a constant conduction-electron density of states. Starting in the Kondo phase at zero transverse-field, there is a smooth crossover with increasing transverse field from a fully screened to a fully polarized impurity spin. By contrast, if the system starts in its localized phase, then increasing the transverse field causes a continuous, Kondo-destruction transition into the partially polarized Kondo phase. The critical exponents at this quantum phase transition exhibit hyperscaling and take essentially the same values as those of the BFKM in zero transverse field. The many-body spectrum at criticality varies continuously with the bare transverse field, indicating a line of critical points. We discuss implications of these results for the global phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model.

Orbital-Selective Mottness in Layered Iron Oxychalcogenides: The Case of Na_{2}Fe_{2}OSe_{2}

Using a combination of th local-density approximtion (LDA) and dynamicla mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations, we explore the correlated electronic structure of a member of the layered Iron oxychalcogenide Na_{2}Fe_{2}OSe_{2}. We find that the parent compund is a multi-orbital Mott insulator. Surprisingly, and somewhat reminiscent of the doped high-T_{c} cuprates, carrier localization is found to persist upon weak hole doping because the chemical potential lies in a gap structure wit almost vanishing density-of-states (DOS). On the other hand, in remarkable contrast, electron doping drives an orbital-selective metallic phase (OSMP) with co-existing pseudogapped (Mott localized) and itinerant carriers. These remarkably contrasting behaviors in a single system thus stem from drastic electronic reconstruction caused by large-scale transfe of dynamical spectral weightinvolving states with distinct orbital character at low energies, putting the Fe oxychalcogenidesneatly into the increasingly visible tendency of Fe-baed systems as ones in orbital-selective Mott phases. We detail the implications of our analysis, and discuss the nature and symmetry of the superconductive states that may arise upon proper doping or pressurizing Na_{2}Fe_{2}OSe_{2}.

Iterative Deconvolution of Quadrupole Split NMR Spectra

We propose a simple method to deconvolute NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei in order to separate the distribution of local magnetic hyperfine field from the quadrupole splitting. It is based on an iterative procedure which allows to express the intensity of a single NMR line directly as a linear combination of the intensities of the total experimental spectrum at a few related frequencies. This procedure is argued to be an interesting complement to Fourier transformation since it can lead to a significant noise reduction in some frequency ranges. This is demonstrated in the case of the 11B-NMR spectrum in SrCu2(BO3)2 at a field of 31.7 T, where a magnetization plateau at 1/6 of the saturation has been observed.

Full superconducting gap in the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te

The thermal conductivity of the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te superconducting single crystal with $T_c =$ 4.1 K, was measured down to 50 mK. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. The $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence at low magnetic field. These results suggest that the superconducting gap is nodeless, unless there exist point nodes with directions perpendicular to the heat current. Due to its high-symmetry fcc crystal structure of Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te, however, such point nodes can be excluded. Therefore we demonstrate that this topological superconductor candidate has a full superconducting gap in the bulk. It is likely the unconventional odd-parity $A_{1u}$ state which supports a surface Andreev bound state.

Visualizing the Charge Density Wave Transition in 2H-NbSe2 in Real Space

We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2.

On the microscopic origin of the magneto-electronic phase separation in Sr doped LaCoO3

The nanoscopic magneto-electronic phase separation in doped La1-xSrxCoO3 perovskites was studied with local probes. The phase separation is directly observed by Mössbauer spectroscopy in the studied doping range of 0.05 <= x <= 0.25 both at room-temperature as well as in the low temperature magnetic phase. Extended with current synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopies, these data help to characterize the volume as well as the local electric and magnetic properties of the distinct phases. A simple model based on a random distribution of the doping Sr ions describes well both the evolution of the separated phases as well as the variation of the Co spin state. The experiments suggest that Sr doping initiates small droplets and a high degree of doping driven cobalt spin-state transition, while the Sr-free second phase vanishes rapidly with increasing Sr content.

Phase Transitions with Discrete Symmetry Breaking in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Models on a Triangular Lattice

We study phase transition behavior of the Heisenberg model on a distorted triangular lattice with competing interactions. The ground-state phase diagram indicates that underlying symmetry can be changed by tuning parameters. We focus on two cases in which a phase transition with discrete symmetry breaking occurs. The first is that the order parameter space is SO(3)$\times C_3$. In this case, a first-order phase transition, with threefold symmetry breaking, occurs. The second has the order parameter space SO(3)$\times Z_2$. In this case, a second-order phase transition occurs with twofold symmetry breaking. To investigate finite-temperature properties of these phase transitions from a microscopic viewpoint, we introduce a method to make the connection between continuous frustrated spin systems and the Potts model with invisible states.

Coulomb interaction and charge neutrality: Pariser, Parr and Pople Hamiltonian versus the Extended Hubbard Hamiltonian

The Extended Hubbard Hamiltonian used by the Condensed Matter community is nothing but a simplified version of the Pariser, Parr and Pople Hamiltonian, well established in the Quantum Chemistry community as a powerful tool to describe the electronic structure of π-conjugated planar Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). We show that whenever the interaction potential is non-local, unphysical charge inhomogeneities may show up in finite systems, provided that electrons are not neutralized by the ion charges. Increasing the system size does not solve the problem when the potential has an infinite range, and for finite range potentials these charge inhomogeneities become slowly less important as the potential range decreases and/or the system size increases. Dimensionality does also play a major role. Examples in bi-dimensional systems, such as planar PAH and graphene, are discussed to some extent.

Signal transport in and conductance of correlated nanostructures

Here we report on our project concerning the application of time dependent DMRG to strongly correlated systems. We show that a previously reported simulation of the spin charge separation in a one-dimensional Hubbard system exceeds a relative error of 100% in the spin sector. In the second part we discuss the application of the Kubo formula to obtain linear conductance for the interacting resonant level model.

Edge States in Molecular Solid α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3: Effects of Electron Correlations

We examine the edge states of the Dirac electrons in the molecular material α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 with electron-electron interactions. Based on the analysis of the extended Hubbard model with the Hartree-Fock approximation, we show that the charge-ordered phase has the gapless edge states only in the vicinity of the phase boundary between the zero-gap state and the charge-ordered phase. We also show a peculiar flux phase caused by the long-range Coulomb interaction with the same mechanism as topological Mott insulator phase.
