Superconducting and Normal State Properties of APd2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) Single Crystals

The synthesis and crystallography, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M, specific heat Cp, in-plane electrical resistivity rho and in-plane magnetic penetration depth measurements are reported for single crystals of APd2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystals were grown using PdAs self-flux. CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 crystallize in a collapsed body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (I4/mmm), whereas BaPd2As2 crystallizes in the primitive tetragonal CeMg2Si2-type structure (P4/mmm), in agreement with literature data. The rho(T) data exhibit metallic behavior for all three compounds. Bulk superconductivity is reported for CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 below Tc = 1.27 and 0.92 K, respectively, whereas only a trace of superconductivity is found in BaPd2As2. No other phase transitions were observed. The chi(T) and M(H) data reveal anisotropic diamagnetism in the normal state, with chi_c > chi_ab for CaPd2As2 and BaPd2As2, and chi_c < chi_ab for SrPd2As2. The normal and superconducting state data indicate that CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 are conventional type-II nodeless s-wave electron-phonon superconductors. The electronic superconducting-state heat capacity data for CaPd2As2, which has an extremely sharp heat capacity jump at Tc, are analyzed using our recent elaboration of the alpha-model of the BCS theory of superconductivity, which indicates that the s-wave gap in this compound is anisotropic in momentum space.

Self-energy effects in electronic Raman spectra of doped cuprates due to magnetic fluctuations

We present results for magnetic excitations in doped copper oxides using the random phase approximation and itinerant electrons. In the [1,0] direction the observed excitations resemble dispersive quasi-particles both in the normal and superconducting state similar as in recent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments. In the [1,1] direction the excitations form, except for the critical region near the antiferromagnetic wave vector ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$, only very broad continua. Using the obtained spin propagators we calculate electron self-energies and their effects on electronic Raman spectra. We show that the recently observed additional peak at about twice the pair breaking in B$_{1g}$ symmetry below T$_c$ in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ can be explained as a self-energy effect where a broken Cooper pair and a magnetic excitation appear as final states. The absence of this peak in B$_{2g}$ symmetry, which probes mainly electrons near the nodal direction, is explained by their small self-energies compared to those in the antinodal direction.

Finite temperature stability and dimensional crossover of exotic superfluidity in lattices

We investigate exotic paired states of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases in anisotropic lattices, tuning the dimension between one and three. We calculate the finite temperature phase diagram of the system using real-space dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that regardless of the intermediate dimensions examined, the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state survives to reach about one third of the BCS critical temperature of the spin-density balanced case. We show how the gapless nature of the state found is reflected in the local spectral function. While the FFLO state is found at a wide range of polarizations at low temperatures across the dimensional crossover, with increasing temperature we find out strongly dimensionality-dependent melting characteristics of shell structures related to harmonic confinement. Moreover, we show that intermediate dimension can help to stabilize an extremely uniform finite temperature FFLO state despite the presence of harmonic confinement.

Spin polarization of Ru in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.795}$Ru$_{0.205}$)$_2$As$_2$ studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

We have employed the x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) technique at the Ru $L_2$ edge of the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x = 0.205$) superconductor. We show that pronounced resonance enhancements at the Ru $L_2$ edge are observed at the wave vector which is consistent with the antiferromagnetic propagation vector of the Fe in the undoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We also demonstrate that the XRMS signals at the Ru $L_2$ edge follow the magnetic ordering of the Fe with a long correlation length, $ξ_{ab} > 2850\pm400$ Å. Our experimental observation shows that the Ru is spin-polarized in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds.

Electronic fine structure in the nickel carbide superconductor Th$_{2}$NiC$_{2}$

The recently reported nickel carbide superconductor, body centered tetragonal $I4/mmm$ Th$_2$NiC$_2$ with T$_c$ = 8.5 K increasing to 11.2 K upon alloying Th with Sc, is found to have very fine structure in its electronic spectrum, according to density functional based first principles calculations. The filled Ni 3d band complex is hybridized with C $2p$ and Th character to and through the Fermi level ($E_f$), and a sharply structured density of states arises only when spin-orbit coupling is included, which splits a zone-center degeneracy leaving a very flat band edge lying at the Fermi level. The flat part of the band corresponds to an effective mass $m^*_{z} \rightarrow \infty$ with large and negative $m^*_{x}=m^*_{y}$. Although the region over which the effective mass characterization applies is less than 1% of the zone volume, it yet supplies of the order of half the states at (or just above) the Fermi level. The observed increase of T$_c$ by hole-doping is accounted for if the reference as-synthesized sample is minutely hole-doped, which decreases the Fermi level density of states and will provide some stabilization. In this scenario, electron doping will increase the Fermi level density of states and the superconducting critical temperature. Vibrational properties are presented, and enough coupling to the C-Ni-C stretch mode at 70 meV is obtained to imply that superconductivity is electron-phonon mediated.

Spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in the spin ladder series $Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}$ by inelastic neutron scattering

The spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 was systematically investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. We discover that the singlet-triplet spin gap excitation survives in this series with x up to 13, indicating the singlet dimer ground state in these compounds. This observation corrects the previous speculation that the spin gap collapses at x~13 by the NMR technique. The strong intensity modulation along QH in x=0 gradually evolves into a Q-independent feature in x>11. This could be attributed to the localized Cu moment magnetism developing into an itinerant magnetism with increasing x. It is a surprise that the spin gap persists in the normal state of this spin ladder system with metallic behaviour, which evidences the possibility of magnetically-mediated carrier pairing mechanism in a two-leg spin ladder lattice.

Magnetic field-enhanced spin freezing in YBa2Cu3O6.45 at the verge of the competition between superconductivity and charge order

Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby doping levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtained in La-214. This suggests a universal interpretation of magnetic field effects in underdoped cuprates where the enhancement of spin order by the field may not be the primary phenomenon but rather a byproduct of the competition between superconductivity and charge order. Low-energy spin fluctuations are manifested up to relatively high temperatures where they partially mask the signature of the pseudogap in 1/T1 data of planar Cu sites.

Density Functional Theory for Superconductors with Particle-hole Asymmetric Electronic Structure

To extend the applicability of density functional theory for superconductors (SCDFT) to systems with significant particle-hole asymmetry, we construct a new exchange-correlation kernel entering the gap equation. We show that the kernel is numerically stable and does not diverge even in the low temperature limit. Solving the gap equation for model systems with the present kernel analytically and numerically, we find that the asymmetric component of electronic density of states, which has not been considered with the previous kernel, systematically decreases transition temperature (Tc). We present a case where the decrease of Tc amounts to several tens of percent.

Phase-dependent heat transport through magnetic Josephson tunnel junctions

We present an exhaustive study of the coherent heat transport through superconductor-ferromagnet(S-F) Josephson junctions including a spin-filter (I$_{sf}$) tunneling barrier. By using the quasiclassical Keldysh Green's function technique we derive a general expression for the heat current flowing through a S/F/I$_{sf}$/F/S junction and analyze the dependence of the thermal conductance on the spin-filter efficiency, the phase difference between the superconductors and the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic layers. In the case of non-collinear magnetizations we show explicitly the contributions to the heat current stemming from the singlet and triplet components of the superconducting condensate. We also demonstrate that the magnetothermal resistance ratio of a S/F/I$_{sf}$/F/S heat valve can be increased by the spin-filter effect under suitable conditions.

Low-energy bound states at interfaces between superconducting and block antiferromagnet regions in KxFe{2-y}Se2

The high-Tc alkali doped iron selenide superconductors KxFe{2-y}Se2 have been recently shown to be intrinsically phase separated into Fe vacancy ordered block antiferromagnetic regions and superconducting regions at low temperatures. In this work, we use a microscopic five orbital Hubbard model to obtain the electronic low-energy states near the interfaces between block antiferromagnets and superconductors. It is found that abundant low-energy in-gap bound states exist near such interfaces irrespective of whether the superconductor has d- or s-wave pairing symmetry. By contrast, it is shown how nonmagnetic scattering planes can provide a natural means to distinguish between these two leading pairing instabilities of the KxFe{2-y}Se2 materials.

Phonon anomalies and lattice dynamics in superconducting oxychlorides Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl

We present a comprehensive study of the phonon dispersion in an underdoped, superconducting Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ crystal. We interpret the results using lattice dynamical calculations based on a shell model, and we compare the results, to other hole-doped cuprates, in particular to the ones isomorphic to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). We found that an anomalous dip in the Cu-O bond stretching dispersion develops in oxychlorides with a simultaneous marked broadening of the mode. The broadening is maximum at $\approx (π/ (2a) ~ 0 ~ 0)$ that corresponds to the charge-modulations propagation vector. Our analysis also suggests that screening effects in calculations may cause an apparent cosine-shaped bending of the Cu-O bond-stretching dispersion along both the ($q$ 0 0) and ($q$ $q$ 0) directions, that is not observed on the data close to optimal doping. This observation suggests that the discrepancy between experimental data and \textit{ab-initio} calculations on this mode originates from an overestimation of the doping effects on the mode.

Crystallographic, Electronic, Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Single-Crystal SrCo2As2

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Magnetic excitations in stripe-ordered La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The charge and spin correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LBCO 1/8) are studied using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The static charge order (CO) is observed at a wavevector of $(0.24,0)$ and its charge nature confirmed by measuring the dependence of this peak on the incident x-ray polarization. The paramagnon excitation in LBCO 1/8 is then measured as it disperses through the CO wavevector. Within the experimental uncertainty no changes are observed in the paramagnon due to the static CO, and the paramagnon seems to be similar to that measured in other cuprates, which have no static CO. Given that the stripe correlation modulates both the charge and spin degrees of freedom, it is likely that subtle changes do occur in the paramagnon due to CO. Consequently, we propose that future RIXS measurements, realized with higher energy resolution and sensitivity, should be performed to test for these effects.

Majorana fermions in chains of magnetic atoms on a superconductor

We propose an easy-to-build easy-to-detect scheme for realizing Majorana fermions at the ends of a chain of magnetic atoms on the surface of a superconductor. Model calculations show that such chains can be easily tuned between trivial and topological ground state. In the latter, spatial resolved spectroscopy can be used to probe the Majorana fermion end states. Decoupled Majorana bound states can form even in short magnetic chains consisting of only tens of atoms. We propose scanning tunneling microscopy as the ideal technique to fabricate such systems and probe their topological properties.

Pressure phase diagram and quantum criticality of CePt2In7 single crystals

We report the temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.

Effect of magnetic field on competition between superconductivity and charge order below the pseudogap state

We theoretically investigate the T-B phase diagram of cuprates building on the SU(2) pseudogap order recently obtained from the spin-fermion model. At low temperatures, our analysis reveals an almost temperature-independent critical magnetic field B_{QDW} at which d-wave superconductivity switches to the quadrupole density wave (QDW) phase. For temperatures beyond a certain value of the order of the zero-field superconducting transition temperature T_c, the critical field B_{QDW}(T) sharply grows. We compare our results derived within the effective SU(2) non-linear sigma-model with the phase diagram recently obtained by sound velocity measurements by LeBoeuf et al. [Nat. Phys. 9, 79 (2013)].

Vortex states and Majorana fermions in spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures

We study the energy spectrum of a vortex core in a two-dimensional semiconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and proximity-coupled to a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We perform self-consistent calculations using the microscopic tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method on a lattice and confirm the existence of Majorana fermions in the non-trivial topological phase. We also find two different topologically trivial bulk superconducting phases, only differing in the type of vortex core structure they support and separated by a zero-energy excitation. Furthermore, we find an asymmetry in the energy spectrum with respect to both Zeeman splitting and vortex rotation direction and explain its physical origin.

Anomalous angular dependence of the upper critical induction of orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductors with completely broken p-wave symmetry

We employ the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion for the Green functions of a clean superconductor with a general ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS) characterized by the effective masses $m_1, m_2$, and $m_3$ in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic induction ${\bm B}=B(\sinθ\cosϕ,\sinθ\sinϕ,\cosθ)$ onto those of a spherical FS. We then obtain the transformed gap equation for a transformed pairing interaction $\tilde{V}(\hat{\tilde{\bm k}},\hat{\tilde{\bm k}}')$ appropriate for any orbital order parameter symmetry. We use these results to calculate the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ)$ for an orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor with transition temperatures $T_{\rm Curie}>T_c$. We assume the FS is split by strong spin-orbit coupling, with a single parallel-spin ($\uparrow\uparrow$) pairing interaction of the \textit{p}-wave polar state form locked onto the $\hat{\bm e}_3$ crystal axis normal to the spontaneous magnetization ${\bm M}_0\perp\hat{\bm e}_3$ due to the ferromagnetism. The orbital harmonic oscillator eigenvalues are modified according to $B\rightarrow Bα$, where $α(θ,ϕ)=\sqrt{m_3/m}\sqrt{\cos^2θ+γ^{-2}(ϕ)\sin^2θ}$, $γ^2(ϕ)=m_3/(m_1\cos^2ϕ+m_2\sin^2ϕ)$ and $m=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. At fixed $ϕ$, the order parameter anisotropy causes $B_{c2}$ to exhibit a novel $θ$-dependence, which for $γ^2(ϕ)>3$ becomes a double peak at $0^{\circ}<θ^{*}<90^{\circ}$ and at $180^{\circ}-θ^{*}$, providing a sensitive bulk test of the order parameter orbital symmetry in both phases of URhGe and in similar compounds still to be discovered.
