Cap-prodcut structures on the Fintushel-Stern spectral sequence

We show that there is a well-defined cap-product structure on the Fintushel-Stern spectral sequence. Hence we obtain the induced cap-product structure on the ${\BZ}_8$-graded instanton Floer homology. The cap-product structure provides an essentially new property of the instanton Floer homology, from a topological point of view, which multiplies a finite dimensional cohomology class by an infinite dimensional homology class (Floer cycles) to get another infinite dimensional homology class.

Analytic Torsion for Quaternionic manifolds and related topics

In this paper we show that the Ray-Singer complex analytic torsion is trivial for even dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. Then we define the quaternionic analytic torsion for quaternionic manifolds and prove that they are metric independent. In dimension four, the quaternionic analytic torsion equals to the self-dual analytic torsion. For higher dimensional manifolds, the self-dual analytic torsion is a conformal invariant.

Existence results for mean field equations

Let $Ω$ be an annulus. We prove that the mean field equation $-Δψ=\frac{e\sp{-βψ}}{\int\sbΩe\sp{-βψ}} $ admits a solution with zero boundary for $β\in (-16π,-8π)$. This is a supercritical case for the Moser-Trudinger inequality.

Introduction to the Tangent Grupoid

We present some plausible definitions for the tangent grupoid of a manifold M, as well as some of the known applications of the structure. This is a kind of introductory note.

Generalized Symplectic Manifolds

This paper uses a generalization of symplectic geometry, known as $n$-symplectic geometry and developed by Norris, to find observables on three-dimensional manifolds. It will be seen that for the cases considered, the $n$-symplectic observables are derivable from the symplectic observables of $C^2$. The quantization of these observables, as well as those on the frame bundle of $R^n$, is also examined.

Surfaces in Lie sphere geometry and the stationary Davey-Stewartson hierarchy

We introduce two basic invariant forms which define generic surface in 3-space uniquely up to Lie sphere equivalence. Two particularly interesting classes of surfaces associated with these invariants are considered, namely, the Lie-minimal surfaces and the diagonally-cyclidic surfaces. For diagonally-cyclidic surfaces we derive the stationary modified Veselov-Novikov equation, whose role in the theory of these surfaces is similar to that of Calapso's equation in the theory of isothermic surfaces. Since Calapso's equation itself turns out to be related to the stationary Davey-Stewartson equation, these results shed some new light on differential geometry of the stationary Davey-Stewartson hierarchy. Diagonally-cyclidic surfaces are the natural Lie sphere analogs of the isothermally-asymptotic surfaces in projective differential geometry for which we also derive the stationary modified Veselov-Novikov equation with the different real reduction. Parallels between invariants of surfaces in Lie sphere geometry and reciprocal invariants of hydrodynamic type systems are drawn in the conclusion.

Ring structure of the Floer Cohomology of $Σ\times S^1$

We give a presentation for the Floer cohomology ring $HF^*(Σ\times S^1)$, where $Σ$ is a Riemann surface of genus bigger than one, which coincides with the conjectural presentation for the quantum cohomology ring of the moduli space of flat SO(3)-connections of odd degree over $Σ$. We study the spectrum of the action of the homology of $Σ$ on the Floer cohomology and prove a physical assumption made by Vafa et al.

Classical lifting processes and multiplicative vector fields

We extend the calculus of multiplicative vector fields and differential forms and their intrinsic derivatives from Lie groups to Lie groupoids; this generalization turns out to include also the classical process of complete lifting from arbitrary manifolds to tangent and cotangent bundles. Using this calculus we give a new description of the Lie bialgebroid structure associated with a Poisson groupoid.

Frobenius Manifolds from Yang-Mills Instantons

We present an elementary self-contained account of semisimple Frobenius manifolds in three dimensions, and exhibit a new family of explicit examples. These examples are constructed from Yang-Mills instantons with a certain symmetry.

PU(2) Monopoles, I: Regularity, Uhlenbeck Compactness, and Transversality

We prove the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding transversality on the complement of the anti-self-dual or reducible solutions, and the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of solutions to these perturbed PU(2) monopole equations. In December 1994, V. Pidstrigach and A. Tyurin and then others proposed a method to prove Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. Their proposal uses a moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations, which are a natural generalization of the U(1) monopole equations of Seiberg and Witten and the equation for anti-self-dual SO(3) connections, to construct a cobordism between links of compact moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles of Seiberg-Witten type and the moduli space of anti-self-dual connections, which appear as singularities in this larger moduli space. A basic requirement of this cobordism technique is the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles and of generic-parameter transversality results for all the moduli spaces of PU(2) monopoles which appear in this compactification, on the complement of the anti-self-dual and U(1) solutions.

On the variation of the Poisson structures of certain moduli spaces

Given a Lie group G whose Lie algebra is endowed with a nondegenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form, we construct a Poisson algebra of continuous functions on a certain open subspace R of the space of representations in G of the fundamental group of a compact connected orientable topological surface with finitely many boundary circles; when G is compact and connected, R may be taken dense in the space of all representations. The space R contains spaces of representations where the values of those generators of the fundamental group which correspond to the boundary circles are constrained to lie in fixed conjugacy classes and, on these representation spaces, the Poisson algebra restricts to stratified symplectic Poisson algebras constructed elsewhere earlier. Hence the Poisson algebra on R gives a description of the variation of the stratified symplectic Poisson structures on the smaller representation spaces as the chosen conjugacy classes move.

Mutation and Gauge Theory I: Yang-Mills Invariants

Mutation is an operation on 3-manifolds containing an embedded surface of genus 2. It is defined by cutting along the surface and regluing using the `hyperelliptic' involution, and is known to preserve many 3-manifold invariants. I show that mutation of a homology 3-sphere preserves its (instanton) Floer homology, and that a related operation on 4-manifolds preserves the Donaldson invariants. A companion article (in preparation) will treat invariants based on the Seiberg-Witten equations.

Equivariant K-Theory of Simply Connected Lie Groups

We compute the equivariant $K$-theory $K_G^*(G)$ for a simply connected Lie group $G$ (acting on itself by conjugation). We prove that $K_G^*(G)$ is isomorphic to the algebra of Grothendieck differentials on the representation ring. We also study a special example of a non-simply connected Lie group $G$, namely PSU(3), and compute the corresponding equivariant $K$-theory.

The moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds

This paper considers the natural geometric structure on the moduli space of deformations of a compact special Lagrangian submanifold $L^n$ of a Calabi-Yau manifold. From the work of McLean this is a smooth manifold with a natural $L^2$ metric. It is shown that the metric is induced from a local Lagrangian immersion into the product of cohomology groups $H^1(L)\times H^{n-1}(L)$. Using this approach, an interpretation of the mirror symmetry discussed by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow is given in terms of the classical Legendre transform.

On the localization theorem in equivariant cohomology

We present a simple proof of a precise version of the localization theorem in equivariant cohomology. As an application, we describe the cohomology algebra of any compact symplectic variety with a multiplicity-free action of a compact Lie group. This applies in particular to smooth, projective spherical varieties.
