Normalization Integrals of Orthogonal Heun Functions

A formula for evaluating the quadratic normalization integrals of orthogonal Heun functions over the real interval 0 <= x <= 1 is derived using a simple limiting procedure based upon the associated differential equation. The resulting expression gives the value of the normalization integral explicitly in terms of the local power-series solutions about x=0 and x=1 and their derivatives. This provides an extremely efficient alternative to numerical integration for the development of an orthonormal basis using Heun functions, because all of the required information is available as a by-product of the search for the eigenvalues of the differential equation. 02.30.Gp; 02.30.Hq; 02.70.-c; 02.60.Jh

Quantized Kronecker flows and almost periodic quantum field theory

We define and study the properties of the infinite dimensional quantized Kronecker flow. This $\bC^*$-dynamical system arises as a quantization of the corresponding flow on an infinite dimensional torus. We prove an ergodic theorem for a class of quantized Kronecker flows. We also study the closely related almost periodic quantum field theory of bosonic, fermionic and supersymmetric particles. We prove the existence and uniqueness of KMS and super-KMS states for the $\bC^*$-algebras of observables arising in these theories.

On Tracial Operator Representations of Quantum Decoherence Functionals

A general `quantum history theory' can be characterised by the space of histories and by the space of decoherence functionals. In this note we consider the situation where the space of histories is given by the lattice of projection operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space $H$. We study operator representations for decoherence functionals on this space of histories. We first give necessary and sufficient conditions for a decoherence functional being representable by a trace class operator on $H \otimes H$, an infinite dimensional analogue of the Isham-Linden-Schreckenberg representation for finite dimensions. Since this excludes many decoherence functionals of physical interest, we then identify the large and physically important class of decoherence functionals which can be represented, canonically, by bounded operators on $H \otimes H$.

On Infravacua and Superselection Theory

In the DHR theory of superselection sectors, one usually considers states which are local excitations of some vacuum state. Here, we extend this analysis to local excitations of a class of "infravacuum" states appearing in models with massless particles. We show that the corresponding superselection structure, the statistics of superselection sectors and the energy-momentum spectrum are the same as with respect to the vacuum state. (The latter result is obtained with a novel method of expressing the shape of the spectrum in terms of properties of local charge transfer cocycles.) These findings provide evidence to the effect that infravacua are a natural starting point for the analysis of the superselection structure in theories with long-range forces.

Lattice Approximation of Quantum Statistical Traces at a Complex Temperature

We prove that the simple condition on the potential V, \int exp(-t V) < \infty for all t>0, is sufficient for the lattice approximation of the trace Tr[A exp(-b H)] with (Re b)>0 to work for all bounded functions A and a large class of potentials. As a by-product we obtain an explicit bound for the real-temperature lattice kernels.

Diagonalizing operators over continuous fields of C*-algebras

It is well known that in the commutative case, i.e. for $A=C(X)$ being a commutative C*-algebra, compact selfadjoint operators acting on the Hilbert C*-module $H_A$ (= continuous families of such operators $K(x)$, $x\in X$) can be diagonalized if we pass to a bigger W*-algebra $L^\infty(X)={\bf A} \supset A$ which can be obtained from $A$ by completing it with respect to the weak topology. Unlike the "eigenvectors", which have coordinates from $\bf A$, the "eigenvalues" are continuous, i.e. lie in the C*-algebra $A$. We discuss here the non-commutative analog of this well-known fact. Here the "eigenvalues" are defined not uniquely but in some cases they can also be taken from the initial C*-algebra instead of the bigger W*-algebra. We prove here that such is the case for some continuous fields of real rank zero C*-algebras over a one-dimensional manifold and give an example of a C*-algebra $A$ for which the "eigenvalues" cannot be chosen from $A$, i.e. are discontinuous. The main point of the proof is connected with a problem on almost commuting operators. We prove that for some C*-algebras if $h\in A$ is a selfadjoint, $u\in A$ is a unitary and if the norm of their commutant $[u,h]$ is small enough then one can connect $u$ with the unity by a path $u(t)$ so that the norm of $[u(t),h]$ would be also small along this path.

q-Supersymmetric Generalization of von Neumann's Theorem

Assuming that there exist operators which form an irreducible representation of the q-superoscillator algebra, it is proved that any two such representations are equivalent, related by a uniquely determined superunitary transformation. This provides with a q-supersymmetric generalization of the well-known uniqueness theorem of von Neumann for any finite number of degrees of freedom.

Random matrix theory for CPA: Generalization of Wegner's $n$--orbital model

We introduce a generalization of Wegner's $n$-orbital model for the description of randomly disordered systems by replacing his ensemble of Gaussian random matrices by an ensemble of randomly rotated matrices. We calculate the one- and two-particle Green's functions and the conductivity exactly in the limit $n\to\infty$. Our solution solves the CPA-equation of the $(n=1)$-Anderson model for arbitrarily distributed disorder. We show how the Lloyd model is included in our model.

Contact interactions on graph superlattices

We consider a quantum mechanical particle living on a graph and discuss the behaviour of its wavefunction at graph vertices. In addition to the standard (or delta type) boundary conditions with continuous wavefunctions, we investigate two types of a singular coupling which are analogous to the delta' interaction and its symmetrized version for particle on a line. We show that these couplings can be used to model graph superlattices in which point junctions are replaced by complicated geometric scatterers. We also discuss the band spectra for rectangular lattices with the mentioned couplings. We show that they roughly correspond to their Kronig-Penney analogues: the delta' lattices have bands whose widths are asymptotically bounded and do not approach zero, while the delta lattice gap widths are bounded. However, if the lattice-spacing ratio is an irrational number badly approximable by rationals, and the delta coupling constant is small enough, the delta lattice has no ggaps above the threshold of the spectrum. On the other hand, infinitely many gaps emerge above a critical value of the coupling constant; for almost all ratios this value is zero.

An obstruction for q-deformation of the convolution product

We consider two independent q-Gaussian random variables X and Y and a function f chosen in such a way that f(X) and X have the same distribution. For 0 < q < 1 we find that at least the fourth moments of X + Y and f(X) + Y are different. We conclude that no q-deformed convolution product can exist for functions of independent q-Gaussian random variables.

Bound-state asymptotic estimates for window-coupled Dirichlet strips and layers

We consider the discrete spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a manifold consisting of two adjacent parallel strips or planar layers coupled by a finite number N of windows in the common boundary. If the windows are small enough, there is just one isolated eigenvalue. We find upper and lower asymptotic bounds on the gap between the eigenvalue and the essential spectrum in the planar case, as well as for N=1 in three dimensions. Based on these results, we formulate a conjecture on the weak-coupling asymptotic behaviour of such bound states.

Complete determination of the singularity structure of zeta functions

Series of extended Epstein type provide examples of non-trivial zeta functions with important physical applications. The regular part of their analytic continuation is seen to be a convergent or an asymptotic series. Their singularity structure is completely determined in terms of the Wodzicki residue in its generalized form, which is proven to yield the residua of all the poles of the zeta function, and not just that of the rightmost pole (obtainable from the Dixmier trace). The calculation is a very down-to-earth application of these powerful functional analytical methods in physics.

Dimension Theory of Graphs and Networks

Starting from the working hypothesis that both physics and the corresponding mathematics have to be described by means of discrete concepts on the Planck-scale, one of the many problems one has to face in this enterprise is to find the discrete protoforms of the building blocks of continuum physics and mathematics. A core concept is the notion of dimension. In the following we develop such a notion for irregular structures like (large) graphs and networks and derive a number of its properties. Among other things we show its stability under a wide class of perturbations which is important if one has 'dimensional phase transitions' in mind. Furthermore we systematically construct graphs with almost arbitrary 'fractal dimension' which may be of some use in the context of 'dimensional renormalization' or statistical mechanics on irregular sets.

Mixing Quantum and Classical Mechanics

Using a group theoretical approach we derive an equation of motion for a mixed quantum-classical system. The quantum-classical bracket entering the equation preserves the Lie algebra structure of quantum and classical mechanics: The bracket is antisymmetric and satisfies the Jacobi identity, and, therefore, leads to a natural description of interaction between quantum and classical degrees of freedom. We apply the formalism to coupled quantum and classical oscillators and show how various approximations, such as the mean-field and the multiconfiguration mean-field approaches, can be obtained from the quantum-classical equation of motion.

Complete positivity of nonlinear evolution: A case study

Simple Hartree-type equations lead to dynamics of a subsystem that is not completely positive in the sense accepted in mathematical literature. In the linear case this would imply that negative probabilities have to appear for some system that contains the subsystem in question. In the nonlinear case this does not happen because the mathematical definition is physically unfitting as shown on a concrete example.

On the Divergence of Perturbation Theory. Steps Towards a Convergent Series

The mechanism underlying the divergence of perturbation theory is exposed. This is done through a detailed study of the violation of the hypothesis of the Dominated Convergence Theorem of Lebesgue using familiar techniques of Quantum Field Theory. That theorem governs the validity (or lack of it) of the formal manipulations done to generate the perturbative series in the functional integral formalism. The aspects of the perturbative series that need to be modified to obtain a convergent series are presented. Useful tools for a practical implementation of these modifications are developed. Some resummation methods are analyzed in the light of the above mentioned mechanism.

Optimized Perturbation Theory for Wave Functions of Quantum Systems

The notion of the optimized perturbation, which has been successfully applied to energy eigenvalues, is generalized to treat wave functions of quantum systems. The key ingredient is to construct an envelope of a set of perturbative wave functions. This leads to a condition similar to that obtained from the principle of minimal sensitivity. Applications of the method to quantum anharmonic oscillator and the double well potential show that uniformly valid wave functions with correct asymptotic behavior are obtained in the first-order optimized perturbation even for strong couplings.
