Stabilizing the Richardson Algorithm by Controlling Chaos

By viewing the operations of the Richardson purification algorithm as a discrete time dynamical process, we propose a method to overcome the instability of the algorithm by controlling chaos. We present theoretical analysis and numerical results on the behavior and performance of the stabilized algorithm.

Feynman-Kac Kernels in Markovian Representations of the Schroedinger Interpolating Dynamics

Probabilistic solutions of the so called Schrödinger boundary data problem provide for a unique Markovian interpolation between any two strictly positive probability densities designed to form the input-output statistics data for the process taking place in a finite-time interval. The key issue is to select the jointly continuous in all variables positive Feynman-Kac kernel, appropriate for the phenomenological (physical) situation. We extend the existing formulations of the problem to cases when the kernel is \it not \rm a fundamental solution of a parabolic equation, and prove the existence of a continuous Markov interpolation in this case. Next, we analyze the compatibility of this stochastic evolution with the original parabolic dynamics, while assumed to be governed by the temporally adjoint pair of (parabolic) partial differential equations, and prove that the pertinent random motion is a diffusion process. In particular, in conjunction with Born's statistical interpretation postulate in quantum theory, we consider stochastic processes which are compatible with the Schrödinger picture quantum evolution.

On the solutions of the $CP^{1}$ model in $(2+1)$ dimensions

We use the methods of group theory to reduce the equations of motion of the $CP^{1}$ model in (2+1) dimensions to sets of two coupled ordinary differential equations. We decouple and solve many of these equations in terms of elementary functions, elliptic functions and Painlev{é} transcendents. Some of the reduced equations do not have the Painlev{é} property thus indicating that the model is not integrable, while it still posesses many properties of integrable systems (such as stable ``numerical'' solitons).

Statistics of resonance poles, phase shifts and time delays in quantum chaotic scattering for systems with broken time reversal invariance

Assuming the validity of random matrices for describing the statistics of a closed chaotic quantum system, we study analytically some statistical properties of the S-matrix characterizing scattering in its open counterpart. In the first part of the paper we attempt to expose systematically ideas underlying the so-called stochastic (Heidelberg) approach to chaotic quantum scattering. Then we concentrate on systems with broken time-reversal invariance coupled to continua via M open channels. By using the supersymmetry method we derive: (i) an explicit expression for the density of S-matrix poles (resonances) in the complex energy plane (ii) an explicit expression for the parametric correlation function of densities of eigenphases of the S-matrix. We use it to find the distribution of derivatives of these eigenphases with respect to the energy ("partial delay times" ) as well as with respect to an arbitrary external parameter.

The Maxwell-Vlasov equations in Euler-Poincare form

Low's well known action principle for the Maxwell-Vlasov equations of ideal plasma dynamics was originally expressed in terms of a mixture of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. By imposing suitable constraints on the variations and analyzing invariance properties of the Lagrangian, as one does for the Euler equations for the rigid body and ideal fluids, we first transform this action principle into purely Eulerian variables. Hamilton's principle for the Eulerian description of Low's action principle then casts the Maxwell-Vlasov equations into Euler-Poincare form for right invariant motion on the diffeomorphism group of position-velocity phase space, R^6. Legendre transforming the Eulerian form of Low's action principle produces the Hamiltonian formulation of these equations in the Eulerian description. Since it arises from Euler-Poincare equations, this Hamiltonian formulation can be written in terms of a Poisson structure that contains the Lie-Poisson bracket on the dual of a semidirect product Lie algebra. Because of degeneracies in the Lagrangian, the Legendre transform is dealt with using the Dirac theory of constraints. Another Maxwell-Vlasov Poisson structure is known, whose ingredients are the Lie-Poisson bracket on the dual of the Lie algebra of symplectomorphisms of phase space and the Born-Infeld brackets for the Maxwell field. We discuss the relationship between these two Hamiltonian formulations. We also discuss the general Kelvin-Noether theorem for Euler-Poincare equations and its meaning in the plasma context.

A Version of Thirring's Approach to the KAM Theorem for Quadratic Hamiltonians with Degenerate Twist

We give a proof of the KAM theorem on the existence of invariant tori for weakly perturbed Hamiltonian systems, based on Thirring's approach for Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the action variables. The main point of this approach is that the iteration of canonical transformations on which the proof is based stays within the space of quadratic Hamiltonians. We show that Thirring's proof for nondegenerate Hamiltonians can be adapted to Hamiltonians with degenerate twist. This case, in fact, drastically simplifies Thirring's proof.

Cauchy Noise and Affiliated Stochastic Processes

By departing from the previous attempt (Phys. Rev. {\bf E 51}, 4114, (1995)) we give a detailed construction of conditional and perturbed Markov processes, under the assumption that the Cauchy law of probability replaces the Gaussian law (appropriate for the Wiener process) as the model of primordial noise. All considered processes are regarded as probabilistic solutions of the so-called Schrödinger interpolation problem, whose validity is thus extended to the jump-type processes and their step process approximants.

Variational Approach in Wavelet Framework to Polynomial Approximations of Nonlinear Accelerator Problems

In this paper we present applications of methods from wavelet analysis to polynomial approximations for a number of accelerator physics problems. According to variational approach in the general case we have the solution as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion in the base of compactly supported wavelet basis. We give extension of our results to the cases of periodic orbital particle motion and arbitrary variable coefficients. Then we consider more flexible variational method which is based on biorthogonal wavelet approach. Also we consider different variational approach, which is applied to each scale.

How Events Come Into Being: EEQT, Particle Tracks, Quantum Chaos, and Tunneling Time

In sections 1 and 2 we review Event Enhanced Quantum Theory (EEQT). In section 3 we discuss applications of EEQT to tunneling time, and compare its quantitative predictions with other approaches, in particular with Büttiker-Larmor and Bohm trajectory approach. In section 4 we discuss quantum chaos and quantum fractals resulting from simultaneous continuous monitoring of several non-commuting observables. In particular we show self-similar, non-linear, iterated function system-type, patterns arising from quantum jumps and from the associated Markov operator. Concluding remarks pointing to possible future development of EEQT are given in section 5.

Chaos in Static Axisymmetric Spacetimes I : Vacuum Case

We study the motion of test particle in static axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes and discuss two criteria for strong chaos to occur: (1) a local instability measured by the Weyl curvature, and (2) a tangle of a homoclinic orbit, which is closely related to an unstable periodic orbit in general relativity. We analyze several static axisymmetric spacetimes and find that the first criterion is a sufficient condition for chaos, at least qualitatively. Although some test particles which do not satisfy the first criterion show chaotic behavior in some spacetimes, these can be accounted for the second criterion.

Quantum Surface of Section Method: Demonstration of semiclassical Berry-Robnik energy level spacing distribution in a generic 2-dim Hamiltonian system

The recently developed quantum surface of section method is applied to a search for extremely high-lying energy levels in a simple but generic Hamiltonian system between integrability and chaos, namely the semiseparable 2-dim oscillator. Using the stretch of 13,445 consecutive levels with the sequential number around $1.8\cdot 10^7$ (eighteen million) we have clearly demonstrated the validity of the semiclassical Berry-Robnik level spacing distribution while at 1000 times smaller sequential quantum numbers we find the very persistent quasi universal phenomenon of power-law level repulsion which is globally very well described by the Brody distribution.

Quadratic Volume Preserving Maps

We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Henon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.

Reflection Symmetric Ballistic Microstructures: Quantum Transport Properties

We show that reflection symmetry has a strong influence on quantum transport properties. Using a random S-matrix theory approach, we derive the weak-localization correction, the magnitude of the conductance fluctuations, and the distribution of the conductance for three classes of reflection symmetry relevant for experimental ballistic microstructures. The S-matrix ensembles used fall within the general classification scheme introduced by Dyson, but because the conductance couples blocks of the S-matrix of different parity, the resulting conductance properties are highly non-trivial.

Nuclear Mass Dependence of Chaotic Dynamics in Ginocchio Model

The chaotic dynamics in nuclear collective motion is studied in the framework of a schematic shell model which has only monopole and quadrupole degrees of freedom. The model is shown to reproduce the experimentally observed global trend toward less chaotic motion in heavier nuclei. The relation between current approach and the earlier studies with bosonic models is discussed.

Anomalous Scaling in the N-Point Functions of Passive Scalar

A recent analysis of the 4-point correlation function of the passive scalar advected by a time-decorrelated random flow is extended to the N-point case. It is shown that all stationary-state inertial-range correlations are dominated by homogeneous zero modes of singular operators describing their evolution. We compute analytically the zero modes governing the N-point structure functions and the anomalous dimensions corresponding to them to the linear order in the scaling exponent of the 2-point function of the advecting velocity field. The implications of these calculations for the dissipation correlations are discussed.

Scale Anomaly and Quantum Chaos in the Billiards with Pointlike Scatterers

We argue that the random-matrix like energy spectra found in pseudointegrable billiards with pointlike scatterers are related to the quantum violation of scale invariance of classical analogue system. It is shown that the behavior of the running coupling constant explains the key characteristics of the level statistics of pseudointegrable billiards.

Solitons and diffusive modes in the noiseless Burgers equation: Stability analysis

The noiseless Burgers equation in one spatial dimension is analyzed from the point of view of a diffusive evolution equation in terms of nonlinear soliton modes and linear diffusive modes. The transient evolution of the profile is interpreted as a gas of right hand solitons connected by ramp solutions with superposed linear diffusive modes. This picture is supported by a linear stability analysis of the soliton mode. The spectrum and phase shift of the diffusive modes are determined. In the presence of the soliton the diffusive modes develop a gap in the spectrum and are phase-shifted in accordance with Levinson's theorem. The spectrum also exhibits a zero-frequency translation or Goldstone mode associated with the broken translational symmetry.

Multiscaling in passive scalar advection as stochastic shape dynamics

The Kraichnan rapid advection model is recast as the stochastic dynamics of tracer trajectories. This framework replaces the random fields with a small set of stochastic ordinary differential equations. Multiscaling of correlation functions arises naturally as a consequence of the geometry described by the evolution of N trajectories. Scaling exponents and scaling structures are interpreted as excited states of the evolution operator. The trajectories become nearly deterministic in high dimensions allowing for perturbation theory in this limit. We calculate perturbatively the anomalous exponent of the third and fourth order correlation functions. The fourth order result agrees with previous calculations.
