New examples of conservative systems on S^2 possessing an integral cubic in momenta

It has been proved that on 2-dimensional orientable compact manifolds of genus $g>1$ there is no integrable geodesic flow with an integral polynomial in momenta. There is a conjecture that all integrable geodesic flows on $T^2$ possess an integral quadratic in momenta. All geodesic flows on $S^2$ and $T^2$ possessing integrals linear and quadratic in momenta have been described by Kolokol'tsov, Babenko and Nekhoroshev. So far there has been known only one example of conservative system on $S^2$ possessing an integral cubic in momenta: the case of Goryachev-Chaplygin in the dynamics of a rigid body. The aim of this paper is to propose a new one-parameter family of examples of complete integrable conservative systems on $S^2$ possessing an integral cubic in momenta. We show that our family does not include the case of Goryachev-Chaplygin.

Morse theory of harmonic forms

We consider the problem of whether it is possible to improve the Novikov inequalities for closed 1-forms, or any other inequalities of a similar nature, if we assume, additionally, that the given 1-form is harmonic with respect to some Riemannian metric. We show that, under suitable assumptions, it is impossible. We use, in an essential way, a theorem of E.Calabi characterizing 1-forms which are harmonic with respect to some metric. We also study some interesting examples illustrating our results.

Classification of stationary compact homogeneous special pseudo Kähler manifolds of semisimple groups

The variation of Hodge structure of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold induces a canonical Kähler metric on its Kuranishi moduli space, known as the Weil-Petersson metric. Similarly, special pseudo Kähler manifolds correspond to certain (abstract) variations of Hodge structure which generalize the above example. We give the classification of homogeneous special pseudo Kähler manifolds of semisimple groups with compact stabilizer.

Prescribing Mean Curvature: Existence and Uniqueness Problems

This paper presents results on the extent to which mean curvature data can be used to determine a surface in space or its shape. The emphasis is on Bonnet's problem: classify and study the surface immersions in $\R^3$ whose shape is not uniquely determined by the first fundamental form and the mean curvature function. The properties of immersions with umbilics and global rigidity results for closed surfaces are presented in the first part of this paper. The second part of the paper outlines an existence theory for conformal immersions based on Dirac spinors along with its immediate applications to Bonnet's problem. The presented existence paradigm provides insight into the topology of the moduli space of Bonnet immersions of a closed surface, and reveals a parallel between Bonnet's problem and Pauli's exclusion principle.

Continuous families of isospectral metrics on simply connected manifolds

We construct continuous families of Riemannian metrics on certain simply connected manifolds with the property that the resulting Riemannian manifolds are pairwise isospectral for the Laplace operator acting on functions. These are the first examples of simply connected Riemannian manifolds without boundary which are isospectral, but not isometric. For example, we construct continuous isospectral families of metrics on the product of spheres S^4\times S^3\times S^3. The metrics considered are not locally homogeneous. For a big class of such families, the set of critical values of the scalar curvature function changes during the deformation. Moreover, the manifolds are in general not isospectral for the Laplace operator acting on 1-forms.

Totally geodesic orbits of isometries

We study cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifolds and we establish some simple criterium to test when a singular orbit is totally geodesic. As an application, we classify compact, positively curved Riemannian manifolds which are acted on isometrically by a non semisimple Lie group with an hypersurface orbit.

Kahler geometry of toric varieties and extremal metrics

Recently Guillemin gave an explicit combinatorial way of constructing "toric" Kahler metrics on (symplectic) toric varieties, using only data on the moment polytope. In this paper, differential geometric properties of these metrics are investigated using Guillemin's construction. In particular, a nice combinatorial formula for the scalar curvature is given, and the Euler-Lagrange condition for such "toric" metrics being extremal (in the sense of Calabi) is derived. A construction, due to Calabi, of a 1-parameter family of extremal metrics of non-constant scalar curvature is recast very simply and explicitly. Finally, a curious combinatorial formula for convex polytopes, that follows from the relation between the total integral of the scalar curvature and the wedge product of the first Chern class with a suitable power of the Kahler class, is presented.

Isometry groups and geodesic foliations of Lorentz manifolds. Part I: Foundations of Lorentz dynamics

This is the first part of a series on non-compact groups acting isometrically on compact Lorentz manifolds. This subject was recently investigated by many authors. In the present part we investigate the dynamics of affine, and especially Lorentz transformations. In particular we show how this is related to geodesic foliations. The existence of geodesic foliations was (very succinctly) mentioned for the first time by D'Ambra and Gromov, who suggested that this may help in the classification of compact Lorentz manifolds with non-compact isometry groups. In the Part II of the series, a partial classification of compact Lorentz manifolds with non-compact isometry group will be achieved with the aid of geometrical tools along with the dynamical ones presented here.

Discrete surfaces of constant mean curvature via dressing

We translate a classification scheme for periodic CMC surfaces developed by J. Dorfmeister and the author to discrete CMC surfaces in the sense of A. Bobenko and U. Pinkall. The scheme uses the dressing action on discrete CMC surfaces to arrive at a classification for periodic discrete CMC surfaces.

Relative torsion for representations in finite type Hilbert modules

For a closed manifold equipped with a Riemannian metric, a triangulation, a representation of its fundamental group on an Hilbert module of finite type (over of finite von Neumann algebra), and a Hermitian structure on the flat bundle associated to the representation, one defines a numerical invariant, the relative torsion. The relative torsion is a positive real number and unlike the analytic torsion or the Reidemeister torsion, which are defined only when the pair manifold- representation is of determinant class, is always defined. When the pair is of determinant class the relative torsionis equal to the quotient of the analytic and the Reidemeister torsion. We calculate the relative torsion.

Poisson harmonic forms, Kostant harmonic forms, and the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of $K/T$

We characterize the harmonic forms on a flag manifold $K/T$ defined by Kostant in 1963 in terms of a Poisson structure. Namely, they are ``Poisson harmonic" with respect to the so-called Bruhat Poisson structure on $K/T$. This enables us to give Poisson geometrical proofs of many of the special properties of these harmonic forms. In particular, we construct explicit representatives for the Schubert basis of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of $K/T$, where the $S^1$-action is defined by $ρ$. Using a simple argument in equivariant cohomology, we recover the connection between the Kostant harmonic forms and the Schubert calculus on $K/T$ that was found by Kostant and Kumar in 1986. We also show that the Kostant harmonic forms are limits of the more familiar Hodge harmonic forms with respect to a family of Hermitian metrics.

Isometry groups and geodesic foliations of Lorentz manifolds. Part II: Geometry of analytic Lorentz manifolds with large isometry groups

This is Part II of a series on noncompact isometry groups of Lorentz manifolds. We have introduced in Part I, a compactification of these isometry groups, and called ``bi-polarized'' those Lorentz manifolds having a ``trivial '' compactification. Here we show a geometric rigidity of non-bi-polarized Lorentz manifolds; that is, they are (at least locally) warped products of constant curvature Lorentz manifolds by Riemannian manifolds.

Higher analytic torsion and cohomology of diffeomorphism groups

We consider a closed odd-dimensional oriented manifold $M$ together with an acyclic flat hermitean vector bundle $\cF$. We form the trivial fibre bundle with fibre $M$ over the manifold of all Riemannian metrics on $M$. It has a natural flat connection and a vertical Riemannian metric. The higher analytic torsion form of Bismut/Lott associated to the situation is invariant with respect to the connected component of the identity of the diffeomorphism group of $M$. Using that the space of Riemannian metrics is contractible we define continuous cohomology classes of the diffeomorphism group and its Lie algebra. For the circle we compute this classes in degree 2 and show that the group cohomology class is non-trivial, while the Lie algebra cohomology class vanishes.

Positively curved 7-dimensional manifolds

We deal with seven dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds of positive curvature which admit a cohomogeneity one action by a compact Lie group G. We prove that the manifold is diffeomorphic to a sphere if the dimension of the semisimple part of G is bigger than 6.
