A geometrical method towards first integrals for dynamical systems

We develop a method, based on Darboux' and Liouville's works, to find first integrals and/or invariant manifolds for a physically relevant class of dynamical systems, without making any assumption on these elements' form. We apply it to three dynamical systems: Lotka--Volterra, Lorenz and Rikitake.

Tau-functions and Dressing Transformations for Zero-Curvature Affine Integrable Equations

The solutions of a large class of hierarchies of zero-curvature equations that includes Toda and KdV type hierarchies are investigated. All these hierarchies are constructed from affine (twisted or untwisted) Kac-Moody algebras~$\ggg$. Their common feature is that they have some special ``vacuum solutions'' corresponding to Lax operators lying in some abelian (up to the central term) subalgebra of~$\ggg$; in some interesting cases such subalgebras are of the Heisenberg type. Using the dressing transformation method, the solutions in the orbit of those vacuum solutions are constructed in a uniform way. Then, the generalized tau-functions for those hierarchies are defined as an alternative set of variables corresponding to certain matrix elements evaluated in the integrable highest-weight representations of~$\ggg$. Such definition of tau-functions applies for any level of the representation, and it is independent of its realization (vertex operator or not). The particular important cases of generalized mKdV and KdV hierarchies as well as the abelian and non abelian affine Toda theories are discussed in detail.

Constrained KP Models as Integrable Matrix Hierarchies

We formulate the constrained KP hierarchy (denoted by \cKP$_{K+1,M}$) as an affine ${\widehat {sl}} (M+K+1)$ matrix integrable hierarchy generalizing the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy. Using an algebraic approach, including the graded structure of the generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy, we are able to find several new universal results valid for the \cKP hierarchy. In particular, our method yields a closed expression for the second bracket obtained through Dirac reduction of any untwisted affine Kac-Moody current algebra. An explicit example is given for the case ${\widehat {sl}} (M+K+1)$, for which a closed expression for the general recursion operator is also obtained. We show how isospectral flows are characterized and grouped according to the semisimple {\em non-regular} element $E$ of $sl (M+K+1)$ and the content of the center of the kernel of $E$.

Nonlinear dynamical systems and classical orthogonal polynomials

It is demonstrated that nonlinear dynamical systems with analytic nonlinearities can be brought down to the abstract Schrödinger equation in Hilbert space with boson Hamiltonian. The Fourier coefficients of the expansion of solutions to the Schrödinger equation in the particular occupation number representation are expressed by means of the classical orthogonal polynomials. The introduced formalism amounts a generalization of the classical methods for linearization of nonlinear differential equations such as the Carleman embedding technique and Koopman approach.

A Note on Fractional KdV Hierarchies

We introduce a hierarchy of mutually commuting dynamical systems on a finite number of Laurent series. This hierarchy can be seen as a prolongation of the KP hierarchy, or a ``reduction'' in which the space coordinate is identified with an arbitrarily chosen time of a bigger dynamical system. Fractional KdV hierarchies are gotten by means of further reductions, obtained by constraining the Laurent series. The case of sl(3)^2 and its bihamiltonian structure are discussed in detail.

On the simplest (2+1) dimensional integrable spin systems and their equivalent nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Using a moving space curve formalism, geometrical as well as gauge equivalence between a (2+1) dimensional spin equation (M-I equation) and the (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) originally discovered by Calogero, discussed then by Zakharov and recently rederived by Strachan, have been estabilished. A compatible set of three linear equations are obtained and integrals of motion are discussed. Through stereographic projection, the M-I equation has been bilinearized and different types of solutions such as line and curved solitons, breaking solitons, induced dromions, and domain wall type solutions are presented. Breaking soliton solutions of (2+1) dimensional NLSE have also been reported. Generalizations of the above spin equation are discussed.

A Dirac Sea and thermodynamic equilibrium for the quantized three-wave interaction

The classical version of the three wave interaction models the creation and destruction of waves; the quantized version models the creation and destruction of particles. The quantum three wave interaction is described and the Bethe Ansatz for the eigenfunctions is given in closed form. The Bethe equations are derived in a rigorous fashion and are shown to have a thermodynamic limit. The Dirac sea of negative energy states is obtained as the infinite density limit. Finite particle/hole excitations are determined and the asymptotic relation of energy and momentum is obtained. The Yang-Yang functional for the relative free energy of finite density excitations is constructed and is shown to be convex and bounded below. The equations of thermal equilibrium are obtained.

Moving Frames Hierarchy and BF Theory

We show that the one-dimensional projection of Chern-Simons gauged Nonlinear Schrodinger model is equivalent to an Abelian gauge field theory of continuum Heisenberg spin chain. In such a theory, the matter field has geometrical meaning of coordinates in tangent plane to the spin phase space, while the U(1) gauge symmetry relates to rotation in the plane. This allows us to construct the infinite hierarchy of integrable gauge theories and corresponding magnetic models. To each of them a U(1) invariant gauge fixing constraint of non-Abelian BF theory is derived. The corresponding moving frames hierarchy is obtained and the spectral parameter is interpreted as a constant-valued statistical gauge potential constrained by the 1-cocycle condition.

The structures underlying soliton solutions in integrable hierarchies

We point out that a common feature of integrable hierarchies presenting soliton solutions is the existence of some special ``vacuum solutions'' such that the Lax operators evaluated on them, lie in some abelian subalgebra of the associated Kac-Moody algebra. The soliton solutions are constructed out of those ``vacuum solitons'' by the dressing transformation procedure.

On Infinite-Dimensional Algebras of Symmetries of the Self-Dual Yang-Mills Equations

Infinite-dimensional algebras of hidden symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations are considered. A current-type algebra of symmetries and an affine extension of conformal symmetries introduced recently are discussed using the twistor picture. It is shown that the extended conformal symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations have a simple description in terms of Ward's twistor construction.

Miura Transformation between two Non-Linear Equations in 2+1 dimensions

A Dispersive Wave Equation in 2+1 dimensions (2LDW) widely discussed by different authors is shown to be nothing but the modified version of the Generalized Dispersive Wave Equation (GLDW). Using Singularity Analysis and techniques based upon the Painleve Property leading to the Double Singular Manifold Expansion we shall find the Miura Transformation which converts the 2LDW Equation into the GLDW Equation. Through this Miura Transformation we shall also present the Lax pair of the 2LDW Equation as well as some interesting reductions to several already known integrable systems in 1+1 dimensions.

AKS scheme for face and Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type models

We give the construction of quantum Lax equations for IRF models and difference versions of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models introduced by Ruijsenaars. We solve the equations using factorization properties of the underlying face Hopf algebras/elliptic quantum groups. This construction is in the spirit of the Adler-Kostant-Symes method and generalizes our previous work to the case of face Hopf algebras/elliptic quantum groups with dynamical R-matrices.

Matrix Formulation of Hamiltonian Structures of Constrained KP Hierarchy

We give a matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structures of constrained KP hierarchy. First, we derive from the matrix formulation the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy, which was originally obtained by Oevel and Strampp. We then generalize the derivation to the multi-constraint case and show that the resulting bracket is actually the second Gelfand-Dickey bracket associated with the corresponding Lax operator. The matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy in the form introduced in the study of matrix model is also discussed

Motion of Curves and Surfaces and Nonlinear Evolution Equations in (2+1) Dimensions

It is shown that a class of important integrable nonlinear evolution equations in (2+1) dimensions can be associated with the motion of space curves endowed with an extra spatial variable or equivalently, moving surfaces. Geometrical invariants then define topological conserved quantities. Underlying evolution equations are shown to be associated with a triad of linear equations. Our examples include Ishimori equation and Myrzakulov equations which are shown to be geometrically equivalent to Davey-Stewartson and Zakharov -Strachan (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations respectively.

Analytic-bilinear approach to integrable hierarchies. II. Multicomponent KP and 2D Toda lattice hierarchies

Analytic-bilinear approach for construction and study of integrable hierarchies is discussed. Generalized multicomponent KP and 2D Toda lattice hierarchies are considered. This approach allows to represent generalized hierarchies of integrable equations in a condensed form of finite functional equations. Generalized hierarchy incorporates basic hierarchy, modified hierarchy, singularity manifold equation hierarchy and corresponding linear problems. Different levels of generalized hierarchy are connected via invariants of Combescure symmetry transformation. Resolution of functional equations also leads to the $τ$-function and addition formulae to it.

A Lie Algebra for Closed Strings, Spin Chains and Gauge Theories

We consider quantum dynamical systems whose degrees of freedom are described by $N \times N$ matrices, in the planar limit $N \to \infty$. Examples are gauge theoires and the M(atrix)-theory of strings. States invariant under U(N) are `closed strings', modelled by traces of products of matrices. We have discovered that the U(N)-invariant opertors acting on both open and closed string states form a remarkable new Lie algebra which we will call the heterix algebra. (The simplest special case, with one degree of freedom, is an extension of the Virasoro algebra by the infinite-dimensional general linear algebra.) Furthermore, these operators acting on closed string states only form a quotient algebra of the heterix algebra. We will call this quotient algebra the cyclix algebra. We express the Hamiltonian of some gauge field theories (like those with adjoint matter fields and dimensionally reduced pure QCD models) as elements of this Lie algebra. Finally, we apply this cyclix algebra to establish an isomorphism between certain planar matrix models and quantum spin chain systems. Thus we obtain some matrix models solvable in the planar limit; e.g., matrix models associated with the Ising model, the XYZ model, models satisfying the Dolan-Grady condition and the chiral Potts model. Thus our cyclix Lie algebra described the dynamical symmetries of quantum spin chain systems, large-N gauge field theories, and the M(atrix)-theory of strings.
