Gravitational vacuum polarization as an alternative to dark matter

It is assumed that the quantum vacuum may be studied as consisting of two contributions, with positive and negative energy respectively, which interact but slightly and may be displaced from each other. Then it is proposed that dark matter may be just an increase of the quantum vacuum energy, with respect to the normal dark energy level, induced by the gravitational field of galaxies or clusters. A simple model is worked out able to reproduce astronomical observations.

Experimental design and model selection: The example of exoplanet detection

We apply the Minimum Description Length model selection approach to the detection of extra-solar planets, and use this example to show how specification of the experimental design affects the prior distribution on the model parameter space and hence the posterior likelihood which, in turn, determines which model is regarded as most `correct'. Our analysis shows how conditioning on the experimental design can render a non-compact parameter space effectively compact, so that the MDL model selection problem becomes well-defined.

Support Vector Machines and Kd-tree for Separating Quasars from Large Survey Databases

We compare the performance of two automated classification algorithms: k-dimensional tree (kd-tree) and support vector machines (SVMs), to separate quasars from stars in the databases of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogs. The two algorithms are trained on subsets of SDSS and 2MASS objects whose nature is known via spectroscopy. We choose different attribute combination as input patterns to train the classifier using photometric data only and present the classification results obtained by these two methods. Performance metrics such as precision and recall, true positive rate and true negative rate, F-measure, G-mean and Weighted Accuracy are computed to evaluate the performance of the two algorithms. The study shows that both kd-tree and SVMs are effective automated algorithms to classify point sources. SVMs show slightly higher accuracy, but kd-tree requires less computation time. Given different input patterns based on various parameters(e.g. magnitudes, color information), we conclude that both kd-tree and SVMs show better performance with fewer features. What is more, our results also indicate that the accuracy using the four colors (u-g, g-r, r-i, i-z) and r magnitude based on SDSS model magnitudes adds up to the highest value. The classifiers trained by kd-tree and SVMs can be used to solve the automated classification problems faced by the virtual observatory (VO); moreover, they all can be applied for the photometric preselection of quasar candidates for large survey projects in order to optimize the efficiency of telescopes.

VSOP Observations of the Blazar S5 2007+77

The blazar, S5 2007+77 shows intraday variability in cm wavelengths. Seven epochs of VSOP observations were carried out in 1998 and 1999 at 5 GHz to look for the origin of the variability with the highest achievable angular resolution at cm wavelengths. Here the results of four epochs are analysed, which revealed ~10% variations in polarized flux density.

WMAP2006: Cosmological Parameters and Large-scale Structure of the Universe

The parameters of cosmological model with cold dark matter and cosmological constant (Lambda CDM) have been determined on a basis of three-year cosmic microwave background observations by space mission WMAP, as well as the data on the large-scale structure of the Universe. The data cover scales from 1 up to 10000 Mpc. The best-fit values of LambdaCDM model parameters were found by minimization of chi^2 using the Levenberg-Markquardt approach (Omega_Lambda=0.736+-0.065, Omega_m=0.238+-0.080, Omega_b=0.05+-0.011, h=0.68+- 0.09, sigma_8=0.73+-0.08 and n_s=0.96+-0.015). It is shown that the LambdaCDM model with these values of the parameters agrees well with the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background and with power spectra of the density perturbations, estimated from spatial distributions of galaxies, rich galaxy clusters and from statistics of Ly_alpha absorption lines in spectra of distant quasars as well. The accordance of modeled characteristics of the large-scale structure with observable ones was analyzed, and possible reasons of significant discrepancies between some of them were considered.

VHE emission from M82

Spurred by the improved measurement sensitivity in the very-high-energy (VHE: >100 GeV) gamma-ray band, we assess the feasibility of detection of the nearby starburst galaxy M82. VHE emission is expected to be predominantly from the decay of neutral pions which are produced in energetic proton interactions with ambient protons. An estimate of VHE emission from this process is obtained by an approximate, semi-quantitative calculation, and also by a detailed numerical treatment based on a convection-diffusion model for energetic electron and proton propagation and energy losses. All relevant hadronic and leptonic processes are considered, gauged by the measured synchrotron radio emission from the inner disk region. We estimate an integrated flux f(>100 GeV) 2E-12 1/(cm^2 s), possibly detectable by the current northern-hemisphere imaging air Cherenkov telescopes, MAGIC and VERITAS, and a good candidate for detection with the upcoming MAGIC II telescope. We also estimate f(>100 MeV) E-8 1/(cm^2 s), a level of emission that can be detected by GLAST/LAT based on the projected sensitivity for a one-year observation.

Neutrinos from Auger Sources

The Pierre Auger observatory has presented evidence that the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies in excess of 6x10^7 TeV may be correlated with nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this context we revisit a suggestion based on gamma ray observations that nearby Fanaroff-Riley I galaxies such as Cen A and M87 are the sources of the local cosmic rays. We compute the accompanying neutrino flux and find a flux within reach of second-generation kilometer-scale neutrino telescopes.

On the Luminosity and Mass Loss of Galactic AGB Stars

As part of a reanalysis of Galactic Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (hereafter AGB stars) at infrared wavelengths, we discuss here two samples (the first of carbon-rich stars, the second of S stars) for which photometry in the near- and mid-IR and distance estimates are available. Whenever possible we searched also for mass-loss rates. The observed spectral energy distributions extended in all cases up to 20 $μ$m and for the best-observed sources up to 45 $μ$m. The wide wavelength coverage allows us to obtain reliable bolometric corrections, and hence bolometric magnitudes. We show that mid-IR fluxes are crucial for estimating bolometric magnitudes for stars with dusty envelopes and that the so-called luminosity problem of C stars (i.e. the suggestion that they are less luminous than predicted by models) does not appear to exist.

Mass of Neutron Star in SdS space-time

In this work we present a modified TOV equation which incorporates the cosmological constant with regard to the recent astronomical observations that the Universe is in a phase of accelerated expansion. Using this modified TOV equation we considered the structure of a neutron star in SdS space-time and calculated maximum mass limit for neutron stars.

Multifluid Models for Cyclic Cosmology

Inspired by the Landau two-fluid model of superfluidity, we consider a similar multifluid description for cosmology where two normal fluids occur for matter and radiation respectively. For cyclic cosmology, two dark energy superfluid components turn out to be insufficient but three superfluids can lead to a sensible five-fluid model which in a certain limit becomes indistinguishable from the brane-world cyclic model proposed earlier (Baum and Frampton). Distinguishing more general five-fluid models from brane-world models for cyclic cosmology could be feasible with more accurate observational data.

Polarisation of mJy radio sources

Predictions of the number of faint polarised radio sources that can be detected by SKA pathfinder telescopes and the SKA depend on the polarisation properties of radio sources with a total flux density around 1 mJy. Total intensity source counts suggest a transition in the dominant population from AGN to galaxies around this flux density, and the properties of brighter radio sources may not be representative for this fainter population. We show that unresolved spiral galaxies can be highly polarised radio sources, up to ~ 20% polarised at 4.8 GHz. This result is partly based on observations of nearby galaxies, including galaxies with significant deviations from axial symmetry and other peculiarities. A first analysis of polarised source counts divided into steep-spectrum AGN, flat-spectrum AGN and star forming galaxies is presented, including a prediction of polarised source counts to microjansky levels.

A Cluster of High Redshift Quasars with Apparent Diameter 2.3 Degrees

During analysis of the relation of quasars to galaxies in the 2dF deep field a concentration of quasars was noted. Most striking was the closeness in redshift of 14 quasars about the mean redshift z = 2.149 with a range of $\pm 0.018$. The cluster in spite of its high redshift subtends an area of diameter more than 2.3 degrees on the sky. At conventional redshift distance its diameter would be 181 mega parsecs and the back should be receding with about $10,000 km/s$ with respect to the front.

The Mid-Infrared Properties of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies

The unprecedented sensitivity of the Spitzer Space Telescope has enabled us for the first time to detect a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), which are intrinsically faint in the infrared. In the present paper we present a summary of our findings which providing essential information on the presence/absence of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon features in metal-poor environments. In addition, using Spitzer/IRS high-resolution spectroscopy, we study the elemental abundances of neon and sulfur in BCDs and compare with the results from optical studies. Finally, we present an analysis of the mid- and far-infrared to radio correlation in low luminosity low metallicity galaxies.

Photometric observations of two type II-P Supernovae: normal SN II-P 2004A and unusual SN 2004ek

CCD BVRI photometry is presented for type II Supernovae 2004A and 2004ek. SN 2004A is found to be a typical SN II-P, with the shape of the light and color curves and maximum luminosity closely matching those for SN 1999em. SN 2004ek shows unusual light curves with long flat plateau in the B band, two peaks in the V and prominent brightening in the R and I bands, starting about 45 days past outburst. The brightness decline after the plateau stage is probably quite slow. The plateau luminosity is about 1.5 mag brighter than average for SN II-P.

Indecomposable semiinfinite string-localized positive energy matter and "darkness"

In the absence of interactions indecomposable positive energy quantum matter comes in form of three families of which the massless so called "infinite spin" family which appeared first in Wigner's famous 1939 work is (if mentioned at all) usually dismissed as "unphysical" but without indicating what principle (if at all) is being violated. Using novel methods which are particularly suited for problems of localization, it was shown that these representations cannot be generated by pointlike localized fields but rather require the introduction of string-like generators which are localized along semiinfinite spacelike strings. We argue that such objects can neither be registered in quasilocal Araki-Haag counters nor pair-produced from standard matter. Reviewing the mathematical status of Murphy's law in local quantum physics (everything which is not prohibited to couple does indeed couple) off and on shell, we are led to the result that perfect darkness is only possible in QFT with string-localized fields. New no-go theorems for cosmic acceleration with extra dimensions

We describe new no-go theorems for producing four-dimensional accelerating universes from warped dimensional reduction. The new theorems improve upon previous results by including dynamical extra dimensions and by treating four-dimensional universes that are not precisely de Sitter. The theorems show there exists a threshold four-dimensional equation-of-state parameter w below which the number of e-foldings of expansion is bounded, and give expressions for the maximum number of allowed e-foldings. In the generic case, the bound must be satisfied if the higher-dimensional theory satisfies the strong energy condition. If the compactification manifold M is one-dimensional, or if its (intrinsic) Ricci scalar R is identically zero, then the bound must be satisfied if the higher-dimensional theory satisfies the null energy condition.

The galactic stellar nucleation by globular cluster interactions in dwarf galaxies

Dinamical Friction Problem is a long-standing dilemma about globular clusters(hereafter,GCs) belonging to dwarf galaxies. The GCs are strongly affected by dynamical friction in dwarf galaxies, and presumed to fall into the galactic center. But GCs do exist in dwarf galaxies. Recentry, a new solution was proposed. If dwarf galaxies have a cored dark matter halo, in which case the effect of dynamical friction will be weaken considerably, and GCs are able to survive beyond the age of the universe. In this study, we discussed why does a constant density cored halo cease dynamical friction, by means of N-body simulations.

Modeling fragmentation of the self-gravitating molecular layer by smoothed particle hydrodynamics

We revisit the modeling of ion-neutral (or ambipolar) diffusion with two fluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics, as discussed by Hosking & Whitworth. Some parts of the technique are optimized to testify the pioneer works on behavior of the ambipolar diffusion in an isothermal self-gravitating layer. The frictional heating by ambipolar diffusion is examined, and its effect on fragmentation of the layer is studied. The results are compared to the thermal phases of instability as obtained by Nejad-Asghar.
