On the tautological ring of $\M _g$

We prove among other things that any product of tautological classes of $\M_g$ of degree $d$ (in the Chow ring of $\M _g$ with rational coefficients) vanishes for $d>g-2$ and is proportional to the class of the hyperelliptic locus in degree $g-2$.

Singularity, complexity, and quasi--integrability of rational mappings

We investigate global properties of the mappings entering the description of symmetries of integrable spin and vertex models, by exploiting their nature of birational transformations of projective spaces. We give an algorithmic analysis of the structure of invariants of such mappings. We discuss some characteristic conditions for their (quasi)--integrability, and in particular its links with their singularities (in the 2--plane). Finally, we describe some of their properties {\it qua\/} dynamical systems, making contact with Arnol'd's notion of complexity, and exemplify remarkable behaviours.

Arithmetic Properties of Mirror Map and Quantum Coupling

We study some arithmetic properties of the mirror maps and the quantum Yukawa coupling for some 1-parameter deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. First we use the Schwarzian differential equation, which we derived previously, to characterize the mirror map in each case. For algebraic K3 surfaces, we solve the equation in terms of the $J$-function. By deriving explicit modular relations we prove that some K3 mirror maps are algebraic over the genus zero function field ${\bf Q}(J)$. This leads to a uniform proof that those mirror maps have integral Fourier coefficients. Regarding the maps as Riemann mappings, we prove that they are genus zero functions. By virtue of the Conway-Norton conjecture (proved by Borcherds using Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's Moonshine module), we find that these maps are actually the reciprocals of the Thompson series for certain conjugacy classes in the Griess-Fischer group. This also gives, as an immediate consequence, a second proof that those mirror maps are integral. We thus conjecture a surprising connection between K3 mirror maps and the Thompson series. For threefolds, we construct a formal nonlinear ODE for the quantum coupling reduced $mod\ p$. Under the mirror hypothesis and an integrality assumption, we derive $mod~p$ congruences for the Fourier coefficients. For the quintics, we deduce (at least for $5\not{|}d$) that the degree $d$ instanton numbers $n_d$ are divisible by $5^3$ -- a fact first conjectured by Clemens.

Supercoherent States, Super Kähler Geometry and Geometric Quantization

Generalized coherent states provide a means of connecting square integrable representations of a semi-simple Lie group with the symplectic geometry of some of its homogeneous spaces. In the first part of the present work this point of view is extended to the supersymmetric context, through the study of the OSp(2/2) coherent states. These are explicitly constructed starting from the known abstract typical and atypical representations of osp(2/2). Their underlying geometries turn out to be those of supersymplectic OSp(2/2) homogeneous spaces. Moment maps identifying the latter with coadjoint orbits of OSp(2/2) are exhibited via Berezin's symbols. When considered within Rothstein's general paradigm, these results lead to a natural general definition of a super Kähler supermanifold, the supergeometry of which is determined in terms of the usual geometry of holomorphic Hermitian vector bundles over Kähler manifolds. In particular, the supergeometry of the above orbits is interpreted in terms of the geometry of Einstein-Hermitian vector bundles. In the second part, an extension of the full geometric quantization procedure is applied to the same coadjoint orbits. Thanks to the super Kähler character of the latter, this procedure leads to explicit super unitary irreducible representations of OSp(2/2) in super Hilbert spaces of $L^2$ superholomorphic sections of prequantum bundles of the Kostant type. This work lays the foundations of a program aimed at classifying Lie supergroups' coadjoint orbits and their associated irreducible representations, ultimately leading to harmonic superanalysis. For this purpose a set of consistent conventions is exhibited.

Holomorphic Bundles and Many-Body Systems

We show that spin generalization of elliptic Calogero-Moser system, elliptic extension of Gaudin model and their cousins can be treated as a degenerations of Hitchin systems. Applications to the constructions of integrals of motion, angle-action variables and quantum systems are discussed. Explicit formulas for the Lax operator on the higher genus surfaces are obtained in the Shottky parameterization. The constructions are motivated by the Conformal Field Theory, and their quantum counterpart can be treated as a degeneration of the critical level Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations.

Quaternionic Monopoles

We present the simplest non-abelian version of Seiberg-Witten theory: Quaternionic monopoles. These monopoles are associated with Spin^h(4)-structures on 4-manifolds and form finite-dimensional moduli spaces. On a Kahler surface the quaternionic monopole equations decouple and lead to the projective vortex equation for holomorphic pairs. This vortex equation comes from a moment map and gives rise to a new complex-geometric stability concept. The moduli spaces of quaternionic monopoles on Kahler surfaces have two closed subspaces, both naturally isomorphic with moduli spaces of canonically stable holomorphic pairs. These components intersect along Donaldsons instanton space and can be compactified with Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. This should provide a link between the two corresponding theories. Notes: To appear in CMP The revised version contains more details concerning the Uhlenbeck compactfication of the moduli space of quaternionic monopoles, and possible applications are discussed. Attention ! Due to an ununderstandable mistake, the duke server had replaced all the symbols "=" by "=3D" in the tex-file of the revised version we sent on February, the 2-nd. The command "\def{\ad}" had also been damaged !

Mirror Symmetry, Mirror Map and Applications to Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

Mirror Symmetry, Picard-Fuchs equations and instanton corrected Yukawa couplings are discussed within the framework of toric geometry. It allows to establish mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau spaces for which the mirror manifold had been unavailable in previous constructions. Mirror maps and Yukawa couplings are explicitly given for several examples with two and three moduli.

The Seven-sphere and its Kac-Moody Algebra

We investigate the seven-sphere as a group-like manifold and its extension to a Kac-Moody-like algebra. Covariance properties and tensorial composition of spinors under $S^7$ are defined. The relation to Malcev algebras is established. The consequences for octonionic projective spaces are examined. Current algebras are formulated and their anomalies are derived, and shown to be unique (even regarding numerical coefficients) up to redefinitions of the currents. Nilpotency of the BRST operator is consistent with one particular expression in the class of (field-dependent) anomalies. A Sugawara construction is given.

On a Grauert-Riemenschneider vanishing theorem for Frobenius split varieties in characteristic p

This paper is about sheaf cohomology for varieties (schemes) in characteristic $p>0$. We assume the presence of a Frobenius splitting. (See V.B. Mehta and A. Ramanathan, Frobenius splitting and cohomology vanishing for Schubert varieties, Annals of Math. 122 (1985), 27--40). The main result is that a non-zero higher direct image under a proper map of the ideal sheaf of a compatibly Frobenius split subvariety can not have a support whose inverse image is contained in that subvariety. Earlier vanishing theorems for Frobenius split varieties were based on direct limits and Serre's vanishing theorem, but our theorem is based on inverse limits and Grothendieck's theorem on formal functions. The result implies a Grauert--Riemenschneider type theorem.

The Toda hierarchy and the KdV hierarchy

The Toda hierarchy of size $N$ is well known to be analogous to the KdV hierarchy at $N$ goes to infinity. This paper shows that given $f$ a periodic function, there is a canonical way of defining the initial data for the Toda lattice equations so that the evolution of this data under the Toda lattice hierarchy looks asymptotically like the evolution of $f$ under the KdV hierarchy. Further, the conserved quantities of $f$ and those of the Toda hierarchy match.

Higher Weil-Petersson Volumes of Moduli Spaces of Stable $n$-pointed Curves

Moduli spaces of compact stable $n$-pointed curves carry a hierarchy of cohomology classes of top dimension which generalize the Weil-Petersson volume forms and constitute a version of Mumford classes. We give various new formulas for the integrals of these forms and their generating functions. We also discuss their relation to the Kuenneth formula in quantum cohomology.

Mirror Manifolds in Higher Dimension

We describe mirror manifolds in dimensions different from the familiar case of complex threefolds. We emphasize the simplifying features of dimension three and supply more robust methods that do not rely on such special characteristics and hence naturally generalize to other dimensions. The moduli spaces for Calabi--Yau $d$-folds are somewhat different from the ``special Kähler manifolds'' which had occurred for $d=3$, and we indicate the new geometrical structures which arise. We formulate and apply procedures which allow for the construction of mirror maps and the calculation of order-by-order instanton corrections to Yukawa couplings. Mathematically, these corrections are expected to correspond to calculating Chern classes of various parameter spaces (Hilbert schemes) for rational curves on Calabi--Yau manifolds. Our results agree with those obtained by more traditional mathematical methods in the limited number of cases for which the latter analysis can be carried out. Finally, we make explicit some striking relations between instanton corrections for various Yukawa couplings, derived from the associativity of the operator product algebra.

Cycles algébriques sur les surfaces K3 réelles

For a real algebraic K3 surface $X(R)$, we give all possible values of the dimension $h^1_{alg}(X(R)$ of the group $\H^1_{alg}(X(R),Z/2)$ of algebraic cycles of $X(R)$. In particular, we prove that if $X(R)$ is not an M-surface, $X(R)$ can always be deformed to some $X'(R)$ with $h^1_{alg}(X'(R))=\dim\H^1(X(R),Z/2)$. Furthermore, we obtain that in certain moduli space of real algebraic K3 surfaces, the collection of real isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces $X(R)$ such that $h^1_{alg}(X(R))$is greater or equal than $k$ is a countable union of subspaces of dimension $20-k$.

Deforming Calabi-Yau Threefolds

This paper first generalises the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem to the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities. The deformation space of such a Calabi-Yau threefold is no longer smooth, but the general principle is that the obstructions to deforming such a threefold are precisely the obstructions to deforming the singularities of the threefold. Secondly, these results are applied to smoothing singular Calabi-Yau threefolds with crepant resolutions. Any such Calabi-Yau threefold with isolated complete intersection singularities which are not ordinary double points is smoothable. A Calabi-Yau threefold with non-complete intersection isolated singularities is proved to be smoothable under much stronger hypotheses.

Algebraic cycles and topology of real Enriques surfaces

For a real Enriques surface Y we prove that every homology class in H_1(Y(R), Z/2) can be represented by a real algebraic curve if and only if all connected components of Y(R) are orientable. Furthermore, we give a characterization of real Enriques surfaces which are Galois-Maximal and/or Z-Galois-Maximal and we determine the Brauer group of any real Enriques surface.

Reflection groups in hyperbolic spaces and the denominator formula for Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras

This is a continuation of our "Lecture on Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the arithmetic type" \cite{25}. We consider hyperbolic (i.e. signature $(n,1)$) integral symmetric bilinear form $S:M\times M \to {\Bbb Z}$ (i.e. hyperbolic lattice), reflection group $W\subset W(S)$, fundamental polyhedron $\Cal M$ of $W$ and an acceptable (corresponding to twisting coefficients) set $P({\Cal M})\subset M$ of vectors orthogonal to faces of $\Cal M$ (simple roots). One can construct the corresponding Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g}={\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ which is graded by $M$. We show that $\goth g$ has good behavior of imaginary roots, its denominator formula is defined in a natural domain and has good automorphic properties if and only if $\goth g$ has so called {\it restricted arithmetic type}. We show that every finitely generated (i.e. $P({\Cal M})$ is finite) algebra ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W_1,P({\Cal M}_1)))$ may be embedded to ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ of the restricted arithmetic type. Thus, Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type is a natural class to study. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type have the best automorphic properties for the denominator function if they have {\it a lattice Weyl vector $ρ$}. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type with generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$ are called {\it elliptic}

Hodge groups of abelian varieties with purely multiplicative reduction

The main result of the paper is that if $A$ is an abelian variety over a subfield $F$ of ${\bold C}$, and $A$ has purely multiplicative reduction at a discrete valuation of $F$, then the Hodge group of $A$ is semisimple. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hodge group to be semisimple. We obtain bounds on certain torsion subgroups for abelian varieties which do not have purely multiplicative reduction at a given discrete valuation, and therefore obtain bounds on torsion for abelian varieties, defined over number fields, whose Hodge groups are not semisimple.
