Large Gaseous Detector of Ionizing Eradiation in Search for Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

We propose to search for coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering (CNNS)by means of a triple-sectioned low background proportional counter. As a working medium we plan to use argon and xenon at about 1 MPa. We have shown using bench-scale assembly, that pulse-shape discrimination enables to effectively suppress noise pulses from electromagnetic disturbances and microphonic effect in the energy region where one expects signal from CNNS (from 20 eV to 100 eV) with a factor of about $10^3$. The calculation has been done of the background from neutrons, generated by muons of cosmic rays. The experimental setup has been proposed.

Hamamatsu R1584 PMT Modifications

Four Hamamatsu H6528 Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) assemblies were purchased by the University of Regina, to be used on the SHMS Heavy Gas Cherenkov detector. Despite the excellent gain, the H6528 signal output has two disturbing characteristics: discharges and ringing tails. In this report, we offer solutions to overcome these issues.

LArSoft: A Software Package for Liquid Argon Time Projection Drift Chambers

We describe in these GLA2011 proceedings the software package LArSoft, a toolkit to perform simulation, analysis and reconstruction with the Liquid Argon (LAr) Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) within the US program of proposed detectors. We demonstrate that LArSoft is a fast-maturing, sophisticated package which has taken on important analyses already, and which stands ready to be adopted by as many as five Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers.

Search in 8 TeV proton-proton collisions with the MoEDAL monopole-trapping test array

The magnetic monopole appears in theories of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking and its existence would explain the quantisation of electric charge. MoEDAL is the latest approved LHC experiment, designed to search directly for monopoles produced in high-energy collisions. It has now taken data for the first time. The MoEDAL detectors are based on two complementary techniques: nuclear-track detectors are sensitive to the high-ionisation signature expected from a monopole, and the magnetic monopole trapper (MMT) relies on the stopping and trapping of monopoles inside an aluminium array which is then analysed with a superconducting magnetometer. The first results obtained with the MoEDAL MMT test array deployed in 2012 are presented. This experiment probes monopoles carrying a multiple of the fundamental unit magnetic charge for the first time at the LHC.

Measurement of cosmic muon charge ratio with the Large Volume Detector

The charge ratio ${k \equiv μ^+/μ^-}$ for atmospheric muons has been measured using Large Volume Detector (LVD) in the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy (minimal depth is 3000 m w.e.). To reach this depth muons should have the energy at the sea level greater than 1.3 TeV. The muon charge ratio was defined using the number of the decays of stopping positive muons in the LVD iron structure and the decays of positive and negative muons in scintillator. We have obtained the value of the muon charge ratio ${k}$ ${= 1.26 \pm 0.04(stat) \pm 0.11(sys)}$.

Status and prospects for BESIII

In this paper the status and prospects for BESIII is presented. The BEPCII machine is in good status and recently reached its highest luminosity of 7.08*10^32cm^-2s^-1. The BESIII detectors have been running stably since 2009. Upgrade plans for its sub-detectors have been proposed and the upgrade is undergoing. The major upgrade comes from the drift chamber and the time of of flight counter. The other sub-detectors show good status and no upgrade are needed. Given the current status and upgrade plan of the BESIII detectors, it's foreseen that the BESIII is able to work for 8 to 10 years from now.

Generating of short pulses with high amplitudes by using of standard Current-Feedback-Amplifier

The traditional method to generate pulses in the range of some nanoseconds with high amplitudes, is the using of the avalanche-effect of transistors. However the problem with this method is the poor possibility for parameterizing. That was the trigger to look for a different way: under using of modern electronic components, a pulse generator, which is parameterizable, was developed. The parameters can be set by using a Windows- or Linux-PC. The pulse width can be adjusted in the range of 3....80 ns; the pulse amplitude in the range of 18...84 V and the pulse repetition rate in the range of 1 Hz to 50 kHz.

CeLAND: search for a 4th light neutrino state with a 3 PBq 144Ce-144Pr electron antineutrino generator in KamLAND

The reactor neutrino and gallium anomalies can be tested with a 3-4 PBq (75-100 kCi scale) 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center or next to a large low-background liquid scintillator detector. The antineutrino generator will be produced by the Russian reprocessing plant PA Mayak as early as 2014, transported to Japan, and deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND) as early as 2015. KamLAND's 13 m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure the energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, sterile neutrino state. This will provide a comprehensive test of the electron dissaperance neutrino anomalies and could lead to the discovery of a 4th neutrino state for Delta_m^2 > 0.1 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta) > 0.05.

Status and Perspectives of PANDA

Physics with antiprotons in the charmonium mass region will play a major role at the future PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility in Darmstadt. At PANDA, an antiproton beam with momenta up to 15 GeV/c circulating in the high-energy storage ring HESR will interact with a hydrogen target. High interaction rates and unprecedented momentum precision will allow experiments addressing, among a variety of other physics goals, hidden and open charm spectroscopy. The detector system of PANDA is optimized to meet the challenges of high-resolution spectroscopy of charmonium states of any quantum number in formation and production with very good background suppression. At the same time, emphasis is placed on meeting the requirements of other parts of the physics program as, e.g. spectroscopy of hypernuclei, with a flexible setup of detector components. This contribution discusses the layout of the PANDA detector. Apart from a description of the overall layout of the experiment, several novel detector developments will be described.

The NESSiE Concept for Sterile Neutrinos

Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long-standing problem of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurement of the third mixing angle theta13 in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourages us to pursue the still missing results on leptonic CP violation and absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling measurements exist, which deserve an exhaustive evaluation. The NESSiE Collaboration has been setup to undertake a definitive experiment to clarify the muon disappearance measurements at small L/E, which will be able to put severe constraints to any model with more than the three-standard neutrinos, or even to robustly measure the presence of a new kind of neutrino oscillation for the first time. Within the context of the current CERN project, aimed to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe, we will illustrate the achievements that can be obtained by a double muon-spectrometer system, with emphasis on the search for sterile neutrinos.

High-precision measurement of atmospheric mass-squared splitting with T2K and NOvA

A precise measurement of the atmospheric mass-squared splitting |Δm^2_{μμ}| is crucial to establish the three-flavor paradigm and to constrain the neutrino mass models. In addition, a precise value of |Δm^2_{μμ}| will significantly enhance the hierarchy reach of future medium-baseline reactor experiments like JUNO and RENO-50. In this work, we explore the precision in |Δm^2_{μμ}| that will be available after the full runs of T2K and NOvA. We find that the combined data will be able to improve the precision in |Δm^2_{μμ}| to sub-percent level for maximal 2-3 mixing. Depending on the true value of \sin^2θ_{23} in the currently-allowed 3 sigma range, the precision in |Δm^2_{μμ}| will vary from 0.87% to 1.24%. We further demonstrate that this is a robust measurement as it remains almost unaffected by the present uncertainties in θ_{13}, δ_{CP}, the choice of mass hierarchy, and the systematic errors.

Generation of reference dc currents at 1 nA level with the capacitance-charging method

The capacitance-charging method is a well-established and handy technique for the generation of dc current in the 100 pA range or lower. The method involves a capacitance standard and a sampling voltmeter, highly stable devices easy to calibrate, and it is robust and insensitive to the voltage burden of the instrument being calibrated. We propose here a range extender amplifier, which can be employed as a plug-in component in existing calibration setups, and allows the generation of currents in the 1 nA range. The extender has been employed in the INRIM setup and validated with two comparisons at 100 pA and 1 nA current level. The calibration accuracy achieved on a top-class instrument is 10 ppm at 1 nA.

Antineutrino reactor safeguards - a case study

Antineutrinos have been proposed as a means of reactor safeguards for more than 30 years and there has been impressive experimental progress in neutrino detection. In this paper we conduct, for the first time, a case study of the application of antineutrino safeguards to a real-world scenario - the North Korean nuclear crisis in 1994. We derive detection limits to a partial or full core discharge in 1989 based on actual IAEA safeguards access and find that two independent methods would have yielded positive evidence for a second core with very high confidence. To generalize our results, we provide detailed estimates for the sensitivity to the plutonium content of various types of reactors, including most types of plutonium production reactors, based on detailed reactor simulations. A key finding of this study is that a wide class of reactors with a thermal power of less than 0.1-1 GWth can be safeguarded achieving IAEA goals for quantitative sensitivity and timeliness with detectors right outside the reactor building. This type of safeguards does not rely on the continuity of knowledge and provides information about core inventory and power status in real-time.

A unique radioisotopic label as a new concept for safeguarding and tagging of long-term stored items and waste

The present paper discuss a novel method of tagging and labeling of waste casks, copper canisters, spent fuel containers, mercury containers, waste pack- ages and other items. In particular, it is related to the development of new long-term security identification tags/labels that can be applied to articles for carrying information about the content, inventory tracking, prevention of falsifi- cation and theft etc. It is suggested to use a unique combination of radioisotopes with different predictable length of life, as a label of the items. The possibil- ity to realize a multidimensional bar code symbology is proposed as an option for a new labeling method. The results of the first tests and evaluations of this are shown and discussed in the paper. The invention is suitable for use in items assigned to long-term (hundreds of years) storing or for final repositories. Alternative field of use includes fresh nuclear fuel handling and shipment of goods.

Proposal for an Experiment to Search for Light Dark Matter at the SPS

Several models of dark matter suggest the existence of dark sectors consisting of SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y singlet fields. These sectors of particles do not interact with the ordinary matter directly but could couple to it via gravity. In addition to gravity, there might be another very weak interaction between the ordinary and dark matter mediated by U'(1) gauge bosons A' (dark photons) mixing with our photons. In a class of models the corresponding dark gauge bosons could be light and have the $γ$-A' coupling strength laying in the experimentally accessible and theoretically interesting region. If such A' mediators exist, their di-electron decays A' -> e+e- could be searched for in a light-shining-through-a-wall experiment looking for an excess of events with the two-shower signature generated by a single high energy electron in the detector. A proposal to perform such an experiment aiming to probe the still unexplored area of the mixing strength 10^-5 < $ε$ < 10^-3 and masses M_A' < 100 MeV by using 10-300 GeV electron beams from the CERN SPS is presented. The experiment can provide complementary coverage of the parameter space, which is intended to be probed by other searches. It has also a capability for a sensitive search for A's decaying invisibly to dark-sector particles, such as dark matter, which could cover a significant part of the still allowed parameter space. The full running time of the proposed measurements is requested to be up to several months, and it could be taken at different SPS secondary beams.

Foil Diffuser Investigation with GEANT4

An investigation into the appropriate materials for use as a diffuser foil in electron radiography was undertaken in GEANT4. Simulations were run using various refractory materials to determine a material of appropriate Z number such that energy loss is minimal. The plotted results of angular spread and energy spread are shown. It is concluded that higher Z number materials such as tungsten, tantalum, platinum or uranium could be used as diffuser materials. Also, an investigation into the handling of bremsstrahlung, multiple coulomb scattering, and ionization in GEANT4 was performed.
