Schlesinger transformations for elliptic isomonodromic deformations

Schlesinger transformations are discrete monodromy preserving symmetry transformations of the classical Schlesinger system. Generalizing well-known results from the Riemann sphere we construct these transformations for isomonodromic deformations on genus one Riemann surfaces. Their action on the system's tau-function is computed and we obtain an explicit expression for the ratio of the old and the transformed tau-function.

Hitchin Systems at Low Genera

The paper gives a quick account of the simplest cases of the Hitchin integrable systems and of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection at genus 0, 1 and 2. In particular, we construct the action-angle variables of the genus 2 Hitchin system with group SL(2) by exploiting its relation to the classical Neumann integrable systems.

A comparison of two discrete mKdV equations

We consider here two discrete versions of the modified KdV equation. In one case, some solitary wave solutions, Bäcklund transformations and integrals of motion are known. In the other one, only solitary wave solutions were given, and we supply the corresponding results for this equation. We also derive the integrability of the second equation and give a transformation which links the two models.

Integrable dissipative structures in the gauge theory of gravity

The Jackiw-Teitelboim gauge formulation of the 1+1 dimensional gravity allows us to relate different gauge fixing conditions with integrable hierarchies of evolution equations. We show that the equations for the Zweibein fields can be written as a pair of time reversed evolution equations of the reaction-diffusion type, admitting dissipative solutions. The spectral parameter for the related Lax pair appears as the constant valued spin connection associated with the $SO(1,1)$ gauge symmetry. Spontaneous breaking of the non-compact symmetry and the irreversible evolution are discussed.

Hamiltonian formulation and exact solutions of the Bianchi type I space-time in conformal gravity

We develop a Hamiltonian formulation of the Bianchi type I space-time in conformal gravity, i.e. the theory described by a Lagrangian that is defined by the contracted quadratic product of the Weyl tensor, in a four-dimensional space-time. We derive the explicit forms of the super-Hamiltonian and of the constraint expressing the conformal invariance of the theory and we write down the system of canonical equations. To seek out exact solutions of this system we add extra constraints on the canonical variables and we go through a global involution algorithm which eventually leads to the closure of the constraint algebra. The Painleve approach provides us with a proof of non-integrability, as a consequence of the presence of movable logarithms in the general solution of the problem. We extract all possible particular solutions that may be written in closed analytical form. This enables us to demonstrate that the global involution algorithm has brought forth the complete list of exact solutions that may be written in closed analytical form. We discuss the conformal relationship, or absence thereof, of our solutions with Einstein spaces.

A Novel Hierarchy of Integrable Lattices

In the framework of the reduction technique for Poisson-Nijenhuis structures, we derive a new hierarchy of integrable lattice, whose continuum limit is the AKNS hierarchy. In contrast with other differential-difference versions of the AKNS system, our hierarchy is endowed with a canonical Poisson structure and, moreover, it admits a vector generalisation. We also solve the associated spectral problem and explicity contruct action-angle variables through the r-matrix approach.

Dispersionful analogues of Benney's equations and $N$-wave systems

We recall Krichever's construction of additional flows to Benney's hierarchy, attached to poles at finite distance of the Lax operator. Then we construct a ``dispersionful'' analogue of this hierarchy, in which the role of poles at finite distance is played by Miura fields. We connect this hierarchy with $N$-wave systems, and prove several facts about the latter (Lax representation, Chern-Simons-type Lagrangian, connection with Liouville equation, $τ$-functions).

The algebraic and Hamiltonian structure of the dispersionless Benney and Toda hierarchies

The algebraic and Hamiltonian structures of the multicomponent dispersionless Benney and Toda hierarchies are studied. This is achieved by using a modified set of variables for which there is a symmetry between the basic fields. This symmetry enables formulae normally given implicitly in terms of residues, such as conserved charges and fluxes, to be calculated explicitly. As a corollary of these results the equivalence of the Benney and Toda hierarchies is established. It is further shown that such quantities may be expressed in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, the simplest example involving Legendre polynomials. These results are then extended to systems derived from a rational Lax function and a logarithmic function. Various reductions are also studied.

A note on the integrable discretization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We revisit integrable discretizations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation due to Ablowitz and Ladik. We demonstrate how their main drawback, the non-locality, can be overcome. Namely, we factorize the non-local difference scheme into the product of local ones. This must improve the performance of the scheme in the numerical computations dramatically. Using the equivalence of the Ablowitz--Ladik and the relativistic Toda hierarchies, we find the interpolating Hamiltonians for the local schemes and show how to solve them in terms of matrix factorizations.

Leading Order Temporal Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation: Solitonless Sector

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear evolution equations (NLEEs) integrable in the sense of the inverse scattering method, we obtain, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as $t$ tends to plus and minus infinity of the solution to the Cauchy initial-value problem for the modified non-linear Schrodinger equation: also obtained are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent NLEEs; in particular, the derivative non-linear Schrodinger equation.

Darboux transformations for twisted so(p,q) system and local isometric immersion of space forms

For the n-dimensional integrable system with a twisted so(p,q) reduction, Darboux transformations given by Darboux matrices of degree 2 are constructed explicitly. These Darboux transformations are applied to the local isometric immersion of space forms with flat normal bundle and linearly independent curvature normals to give the explicit expression of the position vector. Some examples are given from the trivial solutions and standard imbedding T^n\to R^{2n}.

Bäcklund transformations for the second Painlevé hierarchy: a modified truncation approach

The second Painlevé hierarchy is defined as the hierarchy of ordinary differential equations obtained by similarity reduction from the modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. Its first member is the well-known second Painlevé equation, P2. In this paper we use this hierarchy in order to illustrate our application of the truncation procedure in Painlevé analysis to ordinary differential equations. We extend these techniques in order to derive auto-Bäcklund transformations for the second Painlevé hierarchy. We also derive a number of other Bäcklund transformations, including a Bäcklund transformation onto a hierarchy of P34 equations, and a little known Bäcklund transformation for P2 itself. We then use our results on Bäcklund transformations to obtain, for each member of the P2 hierarchy, a sequence of special integrals.

Algebraic Structures Related to Reflection Equations

Quadratic algebras related to the reflection equations are introduced. They are quantum group comodule algebras. The quantum group $F_q(GL(2))$ is taken as the example. The properties of the algebras (center, representations, realizations, real forms, fusion procedure etc) as well as the generalizations are discussed.

Solvable lattice models labelled by Dynkin diagrams

An equivalence between generalised restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) models, associated with sets of graphs, and multi-colour loop models is established. As an application we consider solvable loop models and in this way obtain new solvable families of critical RSOS models. These families can all be classified by the Dynkin diagrams of the simply-laced Lie algebras. For one of the RSOS models, labelled by the Lie algebra pair (A$_L$,A$_L$) and related to the C$_2^{(1)}$ vertex model, we give an off-critical extension, which breaks the Z$_2$ symmetry of the Dynkin diagrams.

Free Fermionic Elliptic Reflection Matrices and Quantum Group Invariance

Elliptic diagonal solutions for the reflection matrices associated to the elliptic $R$ matrix of the eight vertex free fermion model are presented. They lead through the second derivative of the open chain transfer matrix to an XY hamiltonian in a magnetic field which is invariant under a quantum deformed Clifford--Hopf algebra.
