Magnetic Properties of Two-dimensional Nanodots: Ground State and Phase Transition

We study the effect of perpendicular single-ion anisotropy, $-As_{\text{z}}^2$, on the ground-state structure and finite-temperature properties of a two-dimensional magnetic nanodot in presence of a dipolar interaction of strength $D$. By a simulated annealing Monte Carlo method, we show that in the ground state a vortex core perpendicular to the nanodot plane emerges already in the range of moderate anisotropy values above a certain threshold level. In the giant-anisotropy regime the vortex structure is superseded by a stripe domain structure with stripes of alternate domains perpendicular to the surface of the sample. We have also observed an intermediate stage between the vortex and stripe structures, with satellite regions of tilted nonzero perpendicular magnetization around the core. At finite temperatures, at small $A$, we show by Monte Carlo simulations that there is a transition from the the in-plane vortex phase to the disordered phase characterized by a peak in the specific heat and the vanishing vortex order parameter. At stronger $A$, we observe a discontinuous transition with a large latent heat from the in-plane vortex phase to perpendicular stripe ordering phase before a total disordering at higher temperatures. In the regime of perpendicular stripe domains, namely with giant $A$, there is no phase transition at finite $T$: the stripe domains are progressively disordered with increasing $T$. Finite-size effects are shown and discussed.

Zeeman Field-Tuned Transitions for Surface Chern Insulators

Mirror symmetric surfaces of a topological crystalline insulator host even number of Dirac surface states. A surface Zeeman field generically gaps these states leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect. Varying the direction of Zeeman field induces transitions between different surface insulating states with any two Chern numbers between -4 and 4. In the crystal frame the phase boundaries occur for field orientations which are great circles with (111)-like normals on a sphere.

Electron-Phonon Coupling in Wurtzite Semiconductors: Intervalley Scattering Selection Rules for Hexagonal GaN

Selection rules are presented for electron-phonon scattering in GaN with the wurtzite crystal structure. The results are obtained for the interband scattering between the lowest conduction band ($Γ$-valley) and the second conduction band ($U$-valley). These selection rules are derived based on the original group-theoretical analysis of the crystal vibrations in GaN, which included detailed compatibility relations for all phonon modes.

Path-integral Monte Carlo for the Gauge-fixed Berry Connection and the Local Z_2 Berry Phase

We present a general formula of the gauge-fixed Berry connection which can be evaluated by path- integral Monte Carlo method. We also propose that the gauge-fixed local Berry connection can be an- other effective tool to estimate precisely the quantum critical point. For a demonstration, we calculate the gauge-fixed Berry connection and the local Z2 Berry phase of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a staggered bond-alternating ladder, and estimated quantum critical point is consistent with other methods.

One approach for determining susceptibilities and order parameters in multi-band Hubbard model

We present an approach for determining susceptibilities and order parameters in multi-band Hubbard model within functional renormalization group method, and apply it to study various instabilities of the FeAs-based high temperature superconductor. First, we derive the formulae of susceptibilities and order parameters of superconducting parings, spin density waves and charge density waves with diverse wave vectors which could occur in multi-band Hubbard model. Second, we apply it to the FeAs-based high temperature superconductor and find an electronic-driven superconducting pairing instability within a five band model with pure repulsive interactions. Our study shows that for doping of our concern, there is competition between antiferromagnetic and superconducting instabilities. In addition, we show that for doping of 0.1, the susceptibility of extended s-wave pairing is dominant over others, while a staggered superconducting pairing with has the second largest value of susceptibility.

Aharonov-Bohm phase-driven resonant tunneling of interacting electrons in magnetopolaronic Majorana-Resonant-Level Model

The magnetopolaronic generalization of a Majorana-resonant-level (-MRL) model is considered for a single-level vibrating quantum dot symmetrically coupled to two half-infinite $g=1/2$- Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (-TLL) leads at the Toulouse point. At the resonance by gate voltage the exact solution for the effective transmission coefficient is obtained in the whole range of magnetopolaronic coupling constant values. The obtained exact solution exists due to special Majorana-like symmetry of tunnel Hamiltonian and gives rise to nontrivial interference between different virtual vibronic channels of resonant tunneling with different fixed Aharonov-Bohm phases. This fact leads to a novel topologically nontrivial type of resonant Andreev-like magnetopolaronic tunneling in the system. As the result, in the zero-temperature limit, it is impossible to compensate the magnetopolaronic blockade in magnetopolaronic MRL-model by means of bias voltage, if vibron energy is the smallest (but nonzero) energy parameter in the system.

Nematic Metal and Antiferromagnetic Insulator on Hexagonal Kagome Lattice

Hexagonal Kagome lattice is a multiband system with a quadratic band crossing point, in contrast with honeycomb lattice with linear band crossing point, which has exotic correlated effect and can produce various novel quantum states. Here we investigate the phase diagram of the fermions on the hexagonal Kagome lattice as a function of interaction, temperature and lattice anisotropy, by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. For weak interaction, the quadratic band-crossing point is broken to linear band crossing point and the system is the semi-metal. With the increasing of the interaction, the system goes a first order transition to antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at low temperature. Below a critical temperature, due to the charge nematic fluctuation, a nematic metal forms between the weak coupling semi-metal and strong correlated Mott insulator. When the lattice anisotropy increases, the region of the nematic metal is enlarged. Furthermore, we discuss how to detect these phases in real experiments.

Phase Transitions Driven by QuasiParticle Interactions

Quasiparticles and collective effects may have seemed exotic when first proposed in the 1930s, but their status has blossomed with their confirmation by todays sophisticated experiment techniques. Evidence has accumulated about the interactions of, say, magnons and rotons and with each other and also other quasiparticles. We briefly review the conjectures of their existence necessary to provide quantitative agreement with experiment which in the early period was their only reason for being. Phase transitions in the Anderson model, the Kondo effect, roton roton interactions, and highly correlated systems such as helium4, the Quantum Hall Effect, and BEC condensates are discussed. Some insulator and superconductor theories seem to suggest collective interactions of several quasiparticles may be necessary to explain the behavior. We conclude with brief discussions of the possibility of using the parameter to detect quantum critical points and some background on bound states emerging from the continuum. Finally, we present a summary and conclusions and also discuss possible future directions.

Local moment dynamics and screening effects in doped charge-transfer insulators

By means of Dynamical Mean-Field Theory we investigate the spin response function of a model for correlated materials with d- or f-electrons hybridized with more delocalized ligand orbitals. We point out the existence of two different processes responsible for the dynamical screening of local moments of the correlated electrons. Studying the local spin susceptibility we identify the contribution of the "direct" magnetic exchange and of an "indirect" one mediated by the itinerant uncorrelated orbitals. In addition, we characterize the nature of the dynamical screening processes in terms of different classes of diagrams in the hybridization-expansion contributing to the density-matrix. Our analysis suggests possible ways of estimating the relative importance of these two classes of screening processes in realistic calculations for correlated materials.

Bond-Alternation-Induced Topological Quantum Gaussian Transition and Topological Quantum Crossover in Ising Chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Non-local orders, entanglement entropy, and quantum fidelity are investigated in an infinite-size bond-alternating Ising chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by employing the infinite matrix product state representation with the infinite time evolving block decimation method. Directly computing two distinct types of finite string correlations for very large lattice distances, in contrast to an extrapolated extreme value for finite size chains, reveals two topologically ordered phases. As the bond alternation varies, a topological quantum phase transition with continuously variable critical exponents along the phase boundary occurs between the two Haldane phases for the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction stronger than the Ising interaction, while a topological quantum crossover between them happens through an intermediate antiferromagentic phase demonstrated with the quantum fidelity for the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction weaker than the Ising interaction. The critical exponents of the order parameters and the central charges from the entanglement entropy quantify the universality classes of the phase transition points. Anisotropic Heisenberg types of spin chains with bond alternations are finally discussed to share the same criticality.

Application of matrix product states to the Hubbard model in one spatial dimension

We investigate the application of matrix product states to the Hubbard model in one spatial dimension with both of open and periodic boundary conditions. We develop the variatinal method that the optimization of the variational parameters is carried out locally and sequentially in the framework of matrix product operators (MPO) by including the sign, due to the anti-commutation relation of fermion operators, in the matrix element of MPO. The numerical accuracy of the ground state energy is examined.

Superconducting fluctuations in organic molecular metals enhanced by Mott criticality

Unconventional superconductivity typically occurs in materials in which a small change of a parameter such as bandwidth or doping leads to antiferromagnetic or Mott insulating phases. As such competing phases are approached, the properties of the superconductor often become increasingly exotic. For example, in organic superconductors and underdoped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ cuprate superconductors a fluctuating superconducting state persists to temperatures significantly above $T_\mathrm{c}$. By studying alloys of quasi-two-dimensional organic molecular metals in the $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X family, we reveal how the Nernst effect, a sensitive probe of superconducting phase fluctuations, evolves in the regime of extreme Mott criticality. We find strong evidence that, as the phase diagram is traversed through superconductivity towards the Mott state, the temperature scale for superconducting fluctuations increases dramatically, eventually approaching the temperature at which quasiparticles become identifiable at all.

High temperature expansion for dynamical correlation functions in the infinite-U Hubbard Model

We develop a diagrammatic approach for calculating the high temperature expansion of dynamic correlation functions, such as the electron Green's function and the time-dependent density-density and spin-spin correlation functions, for the infinite-U Hubbard Model with any number of spin species. The formalism relies on the use of restricted lattice sums, in which distinct vertices of the diagram represent distinct sites on the lattice. We derive a new formula for the restricted lattice sum of a disconnected diagram consisting of several connected components, and use it to prove the linked cluster theorem with respect to "generalized connected diagrams", formed by overlapping the original connected components on the lattice. This enables us to express all quantities as a sum over these generalized connected diagrams. We compute the Green's function to 4th order in βt for the case of m spin species on a d-dimensional hypercube by hand. We take the m\to\infty limit, enabling us to obtain expressions for the Dyson-Mori self-energy to 4th order in βt for the case of an infinite number of spin species. This may have connections to slave boson techniques used for the study of this model. Our approach is computationally more efficient than any used previously for the calculation of the high temperature expansion of dynamic correlation functions, and high order results for both the Green's function and the time-dependent density-density and spin-spin correlation functions shall be presented in a separate paper [25].

Matrix Product States for Lattice Field Theories

The term Tensor Network States (TNS) refers to a number of families of states that represent different ansätze for the efficient description of the state of a quantum many-body system. Matrix Product States (MPS) are one particular case of TNS, and have become the most precise tool for the numerical study of one dimensional quantum many-body systems, as the basis of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. Lattice Gauge Theories (LGT), in their Hamiltonian version, offer a challenging scenario for these techniques. While the dimensions and sizes of the systems amenable to TNS studies are still far from those achievable by 4-dimensional LGT tools, Tensor Networks can be readily used for problems which more standard techniques, such as Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations, cannot easily tackle. Examples of such problems are the presence of a chemical potential or out-of-equilibrium dynamics. We have explored the performance of Matrix Product States in the case of the Schwinger model, as a widely used testbench for lattice techniques. Using finite-size, open boundary MPS, we are able to determine the low energy states of the model in a fully non-perturbative manner and to accurately extract the mass spectrum. In this work we extend the analysis to the determination of the chiral condensate, both for massless and massive fermions. The method allows for accurate finite size and continuum limit extrapolations and produces remarkably precise results, thus showing the feasibility of these techniques for gauge theory problems.

Invariant Energy Levels and Flat Band Engineering in a Kondo Lattice Model on Geometrically Frustrated Lattices

We show the existence of invariant energy levels in a Kondo lattice model on an isolated complete graph, such as a triangle and a tetrahedron. These energy levels always have fixed eigenenergies $t \pm J/2$, irrespective of the configuration of localized moments ($t$ is the transfer integral of conduction electrons and $J$ is the spin-charge coupling constant). We also extend the analysis to geometrically frustrated lattices by using the complete graphs as basic building blocks. We show that the construction rule for the invariant energy levels leads to the existence condition of localized states, if the model is defined on the triangle-based line graphs, such as a kagome lattice. We further propose a procedure of engineering isolated flat bands with broken time-reversal symmetry, which are separated from other dispersive bands with finite energy gaps.

A spectroscopic fingerprint of electron correlation in high temperature superconductors

The so-called "strange metal phase" [1] of high temperature (high Tc) superconductors remains at the heart of the high Tc mystery. Better experimental data and insightful theoretical work would improve our understanding of this enigmatic phase. In particular, the recent advance in angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) [2, 3], incorporating low photon energies (about 7 eV), has given a much more refined view of the many body interaction in these materials. Here, we report a new ARPES feature of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d that we demonstrate to have the key ability to distinguish between different classes of theories of the normal state. This feature---the anomaly in the nodal many body density of states (nMBDOS)---is clearly observed in the low energy ARPES data, but also observed in more conventional high energy ARPES data, when a sufficient temperature range is covered. We show that key characteristics of this anomaly are explained by a strong electron correlation model; the electron-hole asymmetry and the momentum dependent self energy emerge as key required ingredients.

Many-body effects on electron spin dynamics in semiconductors from a geometrical viewpoint

Many body effects on spin dynamics in semiconductors have attracted a lot of attentions in recent years. In this paper, we show why and how the many body effects have to be considered by a simple Bloch sphere geometry approach. The micro dynamics here are viewed as a time dependent sequence of unitary group action on the spin density matrix. Based on this physical picture, we give the explicit unitary group for conventional spin dynamics mechanism such as DP, EY, and BAP using pure density matrix. And we also show the various scattering processes how influence the spin system via mixed density matrix and Feynman diagrams.

Theory of magneto-electric susceptibility in multiferroic chiral magnets

We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new powerful probe to detect and investigate magnetic phases and phase transitions in multiferroic chiral magnets in general.
