R-torsion and linking numbers from simplicial abelian gauge theories

Simplicial versions of topological abelian gauge theories are constructed which reproduce the continuum expressions for the partition function and Wilson expectation value of linked loops, expressible in terms of R-torsion and linking numbers respectively. The new feature which makes this possible is the introduction of simplicial fields (cochains) associated with the dual triangulation of the background manifold, as well as with the triangulation itself. This doubling of fields, reminiscent of lattice fermion doubling, is required because the natural simplicial analogue of the Hodge star operator maps between cochains of a triangulation and cochains of the dual triangulation. The simplicial analogue of Hodge-de Rham theory is developed, along with a natural simplicial framework for considering linking numbers of framed loops. When the loops represent torsion elements of the homology of the manifold then Q/Z-valued torsion pairings appear in place of linking numbers for certain discrete values of the coupling parameter of the theory.

Novel algebraic structures from the polysymplectic form in field theory

The polysymplectic $(n+1)$-form is introduced as an analogue of the symplectic form for the De Donder-Weyl polymomentum Hamiltonian formulation of field theory. The corresponding Poisson brackets on differential forms are constructed. The analogues of the Poisson algebra are shown to be generalized (non-commutative and higher-order) Gerstenhaber algebras defined in the text.

The Geometry of Supersymmetric Gauge Theories in Four Dimensions

We review the relations between (twisted) supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions and moduli problems in four-dimensional topology, and we study in detail the non-abelian monopole equations from this point of view. The relevance of exact results in N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories to the computation of topological invariants is emphasized. Some background material is provided, including an introduction to Donaldson theory, the twisting procedure and the Mathai-Quillen formalism.

Lyapunov exponents and Hodge theory

We started from computer experiments with simple one-dimensional ergodic dynamical systems called interval exchange transformations. Correlators in these systems decay as a power of time. In the simplest non-trivial case the exponent is equal to 1/3. We found a formula connecting characteristic exponents with explicit integrals over moduli spaces of algebraic curves with additional structures. Moreover, these integrals can be interpreted as correlators in a topological string theory. Also a new analogy arose between ergodic theory and complex algebraic geometry.

A note on the Faddeev-Popov determinant and Chern-Simons perturbation theory

A refined expression for the Faddeev-Popov determinant is derived for gauge theories quantised around a reducible classical solution. We apply this result to Chern-Simons perturbation theory on compact spacetime 3-manifolds with quantisation around an arbitrary flat gauge field isolated up to gauge transformations, pointing out that previous results on the finiteness and formal metric-independence of perturbative expansions of the partition function continue to hold.

Supermanifolds of classical solutions for Lagrangian field models with ghost and fermion fields

Using a supergeometric interpretation of field functionals, we show that for a class of classical field models used for realistic quantum field theoretic models, an infinite-dimensional supermanifold (smf) of classical solutions in Minkowski space can be constructed. That is, we show that the smf of smooth Cauchy data with compact support is isomorphic with an smf of corresponding classical solutions of the model.

The Dynamics of Classical Chiral $QCD_{2}$ Currents

In this paper the dynamics of the classical chiral $QCD_{2}$ currents is studied. We describe how the dynamics of the theory can be summarized in an equation of the Lax form, thereby demonstrating the existence of an infinite set of conserved quantities. Next, the $r$ matrix of a fundamental Poisson relation is obtained and used to demonstrate that the conserved charges Poisson commute. An underlying diffeomorphism symmetry of the equations of motion which is not a symmetry of the action is used to provide a geometric interpretation for the case of gauge group SU(2). This enables us to show that the solutions to the classical equations of motion can be identified with a large class of curves, to demonstrate an auto-Bäcklund transformation and to demonstrate a non linear superposition principle. A link between the spectral problem for $QCD_{2}$ and the solution to the closed curve problem is also demonstrated. We then go on to provide a systematic inverse scattering treatment. This formalism is used to obtain the reflectionless single boundstate eigenvalue soliton solution.

Lectures in Topological Quantum Field Theory

In these lectures we present a general introduction to topological quantum field theories. These theories are discussed in the framework of the Mathai-Quillen formalism and in the context of twisted N=2 supersymmetric theories. We discuss in detail the recent developments in Donaldson-Witten theory obtained from the application of results based on duality for N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. This involves a description of the computation of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants. Generalizations of Donaldson-Witten theory are reviewed, and the structure of the vacuum expectation values of their observables is analyzed in the context of duality for the simplest case.

Integration over the u-plane in Donaldson theory

We analyze the u-plane contribution to Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold X. For $b_2^+(X)>1$, this contribution vanishes, but for $b_2^+=1$, the Donaldson invariants must be written as the sum of a u-plane integral and an SW contribution. The u-plane integrals are quite intricate, but can be analyzed in great detail and even calculated. By analyzing the u-plane integrals, the relation of Donaldson theory to N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be described much more fully, the relation of Donaldson invariants to SW theory can be generalized to four-manifolds not of simple type, and interesting formulas can be obtained for the class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields. We also show how the results generalize to extensions of Donaldson theory obtained by including hypermultiplet matter fields.

Isospectrality and 3-manifold groups

The relationship between the Chern-Simons invariant and eta-invariant of a 3-manifold is shown to lead to an obstruction to a group being the fundamental group of a closed oriented 3-manifold. The proof uses Sunada's construction of isospectral manifolds as covering spaces over a common base space.

Boundary values as Hamiltonian variables. II. Graded Structures

It is shown that the new Poisson brackets proposed in Part I of this work (J. Math. Phys. 34, 5747(hep-th/9305133)) arise naturally in an extension of the formal variational calculus incorporating divergences. The linear spaces of local functionals, evolutionary vector fields, functional forms, multi-vectors and differential operators become graded with respect to divergences. Bilinear operations, such as action of vector fields onto functionals, commutator of vector fields, interior product of forms and vectors and the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket are compatible with the grading. A definition of the adjoint graded operator is proposed and skew-adjoint operators are constructed with the help of boundary terms. Fulfilment of the Jacobi identity for the new Poisson brackets is shown to be equivalent to vanishing of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket for Poisson bivector with itself. The simple procedure for testing this condition proposed by P. Olver is applicable with a minimal modification. It is demonstrated that the second structure of the Korteweg--de Vries equation is not Hamiltonian with respect to the new brackets.

Lie Algebroids Associated to Poisson Actions

This work is motivated by a result of Drinfeld on Poisson homogeneous spaces. For each Poisson manifold $P$ with a Poisson action by a Poisson Lie group $G$, we describe a Lie algebroid structure on the direct sum vector bundle $P \times {\frak g} \oplus T^*P$, where ${\frak g}$ is the Lie algebra of $G$. It is built out of the transformation Lie algebroid $P \times {\frak g}$ and the cotangent bundle Lie algebroid $T^*P$ together with a pair of representations of them on each other. When the action of $G$ on $P$ is transitive, the kernel of the anchor map of this Lie algebroid gives a Lie algebra bundle over $P$, the fibers of which are given by Drinfeld. As applications, we describe the symplectic leaves and the $G$-invariant Poisson cohomology of Poisson homogeneous $G$-spaces.

Some aspects of noncommutative differential geometry

We discuss in some generality aspects of noncommutative differential geometry associated with reality conditions and with differential calculi. We then describe the differential calculus based on derivations as generalization of vector fields, and we show its relations with quantum mechanics. Finally we formulate a general theory of connections in this framework.

Berezin-Toeplitz Quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds

Invited lecture at the XIV-th workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 9-15, 1995. In this lecture results are reviewed obtained by the author together with Martin Bordemann and Eckhard Meinrenken on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds. Using global Toeplitz operators, approximation results for the quantum operators are shown. From them it follows that the quantum operators have the correct classical limit. A star product deformation of the Poisson algebra is constructed.

Homological Reduction of Constrained Poisson Algebras

The ``classical BRST construction'' as developed by Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky is a homological construction for the reduction of the Poisson algebra $P = C^\infty (W)$ of smooth functions on a Poisson manifold $W$ by the ideal $I$ of functions which vanish on a constraint locus. This ideal is called first class if $I$ is closed under the Poisson bracket; geometers refer to the constraint locus as coisotropic. The physicists' model is crucially a differential Poisson algebra extension of a Poisson algebra $P$; its differential contains a piece which reinvented the Koszul complex for the ideal $I$ and a piece which looks like the Cartan-Chevalley-Eilenberg differential. The present paper is concerned purely with the homological (Poisson) algebraic structures, using the notion of ``model'' from rational homotopy theory and the techniques of homological perturbation theory to establish some of the basic results explaining the mathematical existence of the classical BRST-BFV construction. Although the usual treatment of BFV is basis dependent (individual constraints) and nominally finite dimensional, I take care to avoid assumptions of finite dimensionality and work more invariantly in terms of the ideal. In particular, the techniques are applied to the `irregular' case (the ideal is not generated by a regular sequence of constraints), although the geometric interpretation is less complete.

Noninvertibility and ``Semi-'' Analogs of (Super) Manifolds, Fiber Bundles and Homotopies

Supersymmetry contains initially noninvertible objects, but it is common to deal with the invertible ones only, factorizing former in some extent. We propose to reconsider this ansatz and try to redefine such fundamental notions as supermanifolds, fiber bundles and homotopies using some weakening invertibility conditions. The prefix semi- reflects the fact that the underlying morphisms form corresponding semigroups consisting of a known group part and a new ideal noninvertible part. We found that the absence of invertibility gives us the generalization of the cocycle conditions for transition functions of supermanifolds and fiber bundles in a natural way, which can lead to construction of noninvertible analogs of Čech cocycles. We define semi-homotopies, which can be noninvertible and describe mappings into the semi-supermanifolds introduced.

Deformation quantization of compact Kähler manifolds via Berezin-Toeplitz operators

This talk reports on results on the deformation quantization (star products) and on approximative operator representations for quantizable compact K"ahler manifolds obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. After choosing a holomorphic quantum line bundle the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated to a differentiable function on the manifold is the operator defined by multiplying global holomorphic sections of the line bundle with this function and projecting the differentiable section back to the subspace of holomorphic sections. The results were obtained in (respectively based on) joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken. (Talk at the XXI Int. Coll. on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, 15-20 July, Goslar, Germany)
