Wilson loops to 20th order numerical stochastic perturbation theory

We calculate Wilson loops of various sizes up to 20 loops in SU(3) pure lattice gauge theory at different lattice sizes for Wilson gauge action using the technique of numerical stochastic perturbation theory. This allows us to investigate the perturbative series for various Wilson loops at high loop orders. We observe differences in the behavior of those series as function of the loop order. Up to $n=20$ we do not find evidence for the factorial growth of the expansion coefficients often assumed to characterize an asymptotic series. Based on the actually observed behavior we sum the series in a model parametrized by hypergeometric functions. Alternatively we estimate the total series in boosted perturbation theory using information from the first 14 loops. We introduce generalized ratios of Wilson loops of different sizes. Together with the corresponding Wilson loops from standard Monte Carlo measurements they enable us to assess their non-perturbative parts.

_{u-d} from lattice QCD at nearly physical quark masses

We determine the second Mellin moment of the isovector quark parton distribution function _{u-d} from lattice QCD with N_f=2 sea quark flavours, employing the non-perturbatively improved Wilson-Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action at a pseudoscalar mass of 157(6) MeV. The result is converted non-perturbatively to the RI'-MOM scheme and then perturbatively to the MSbar scheme at a scale mu = 2 GeV. As the quark mass is reduced we find the lattice prediction to approach the value extracted from experiments.

Lattice study of conformality in twelve-flavor QCD

We study infrared conformality of the twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice. Utilizing the highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of a pseudoscalar meson and the mass of a vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. Our result is consistent with the conformal hypothesis for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$.

Lattice QCD at non-zero isospin chemical potential

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at non-zero isospin chemical potential is studied in a canonical approach by analyzing systems of fixed isospin number density. To construct these systems, we develop a range of new algorithms for performing the factorially large numbers of Wick contractions required in multi-hadron systems. We then use these methods to study systems with the quantum numbers of up to 72 $π^+$'s on three ensembles of gauge configurations with spatial extents $L\sim$ 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 fm, and light quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of {390 MeV}. The ground state energies of these systems are extracted and the volume dependence of these energies is utilized to determine the two- and three- body interactions amongst $π^+$'s. The systems studied correspond to isospin densities of up to $ρ_I\sim 9\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$ and probe isospin chemical potentials, $μ_I$, in the range $m_π \lsim μ_I\ \lsim 4.5\ m_π$, allowing us to investigate aspects of the QCD phase diagram at low temperature and for varying isospin chemical potential. By studying the energy density of the system, we provide numerical evidence for the conjectured transition of the system to a Bose-Einstein condensed phase at $μ_I\ \gsim m_π$.

|V_cd| from D Meson Leptonic Decays

We present an update of the D meson decay constant f_D using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action for valence charm and light quarks on MILC N_f = 2+1 lattices. The new determination incorporates HPQCD's improved scale r_1^{N_f = 2+1} = 0.3133(23) fm, accurately retuned bare charm quark masses and data from an ensemble that is more chiral than in our previous calculations. We find f_D = 208.3(3.4) MeV. Combining the new f_D with D -> μν branching fraction data from CLEO-c, we extract the CKM matrix element |V_cd| = 0.223(10)_{exp.}(4)_{lat.}. This value is in excellent agreement with |V_cd| from D semileptonic decays and from neutrino scattering experiments and has comparable total errors. We determine the ratio between semileptonic form factor and decay constant and find [f^{D -> π}_+(0) / f_D ]_{lat.} = 3.20(15) GeV^{-1} to be compared with the experimental value of [f^{D -> π}_+(0) / f_D ]_{exp.} = 3.19(18) GeV^{-1}. Finally, we mention recent preliminary but already more accurate D -> μν branching fraction measurements from BES III and discuss their impact on precision |V_cd| determinations in the future.

UV Cascade in Classical Yang-Mills Theory

We study the real-time behavior of classical Yang-Mills theory under initial conditions with nonperturbatively large, infrared field amplitudes. Our lattice study confirms the cascade of energy towards higher momenta and lower occupancy, which occurs via a scaling solution $f[p,t_1] = (t_0/t_1)^{4/7}\, f[p (t_0/t_1)^{1/7},t_0]$. Above a characteristic scale p_{max}, f falls exponentially; below p_{max}, $f[p] \propto p^{-4/3}$. We find no evidence for different infrared exponents or for infrared occupancies in excess of those described by this scaling solution. We also investigate what the fate of large occupancies would be, both in the electric and the magnetic sector.

A Non-Riemannian Metric on Space-Time Emergent From Scalar Quantum Field Theory

We show that the two-point function σ(x,x')=\sqrt{<[ϕ(x)-ϕ(x')]^{2}>} of a scalar quantum field theory is a metric (i.e., a symmetric positive function satisfying the triangle inequality) on space-time (with imaginary time). It is very different from the Euclidean metric |x-x'| at large distances, yet agrees with it at short distances. For example, space-time has finite diameter which is not universal. The Lipschitz equivalence class of the metric is independent of the cutoff. σ(x,x') is not the length of the geodesic in any Riemannian metric. Nevertheless, it is possible to embed space-time in a higher dimensional space so that σ(x,x') is the length of the geodesic in the ambient space. σ(x,x') should be useful in constructing the continuum limit of quantum field theory with fundamental scalar particles.

Parton-distribution functions for the pion and kaon in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model

We investigate the parton-distribution functions (PDFs) for the positively charged pion and kaon at a low-renormalization scale ~ 1 GeV. To this end, we employ the gauge-invariant effective chiral action from the nonlocal chiral-quark model, resulting in that the vector currents are conserved. All the model parameters are determined phenomenologically with the normalization condition for PDF and the empirical values for the pseudoscalar-meson weak-decay constants. We consider the momentum dependence of the effective quark mass properly within the model calculations. It turns out that the leading local contribution provides about 70 % of the total strength for PDF, whereas the nonlocal one that is newly taken into account in this work for the gauge invariance does the rest. High-Q^2 evolution to 27 GeV^2 is performed for valance-quark distribution function (VQDF), using the DGALP equation. The moments for the pion and kaon VQDFs are also computed. The numerical results are compared with the empirical data and theoretical estimations, and show qualitatively agreement with them.

Over-populated gauge fields on the lattice

We study nonequilibrium dynamics of SU(2) pure gauge theory starting from initial over-population, where intense classical gauge fields are characterized by a single momentum scale Q_s. Classical-statistical lattice simulations indicate a quick evolution towards an approximate scaling behavior with exponent 3/2 at intermediate times. Remarkably, the value for the scaling exponent may be understood as arising from the leading O(g^2) contribution in the presence of a time-dependent background field. The phenomenon is associated to weak wave turbulence describing an energy cascade towards higher momenta. This particular aspect is very similar to what is observed for scalar theories, where an effective cubic interaction arises because of the presence of a time-dependent Bose condensate.

Mean field theory of effective spin models as a baryon fugacity expansion

The free energy of effective spin or "Polyakov line" models with a chemical potential, based on the U(N) group, does not depend on the chemical potential. In a mean field-inspired expansion, we show how the condition of unit determinant, taking U(N) to SU(N), reintroduces the chemical potential, and allows us to express the free energy, as a function of mean field variational parameters, in terms of an expansion in the baryon (rather than the quark) fugacity at each lattice site. We solve the SU(3) mean field equations numerically to determine the phase diagram and compute observables. We also calculate the first corrections to the leading order mean field results, and find that these can significantly shift the endpoint of a line of first order transitions. The problem of deriving an effective spin model from full QCD is discussed.

Heavy meson masses and decay constants from relativistic heavy quarks in full lattice QCD

We determine masses and decay constants of heavy-heavy and heavy-charm pseudoscalar mesons as a function of heavy quark mass using a fully relativistic formalism known as Highly Improved Staggered Quarks for the heavy quark. We are able to cover the region from the charm quark mass to the bottom quark mass using MILC ensembles with lattice spacing values from 0.15 fm down to 0.044 fm. We obtain f_{B_c} = 0.427(6) GeV; m_{B_c} = 6.285(10) GeV and f_{η_b} = 0.667(6) GeV. Our value for f_{η_b} is within a few percent of f_Υ confirming that spin effects are surprisingly small for heavyonium decay constants. Our value for f_{B_c} is significantly lower than potential model values being used to estimate production rates at the LHC. We discuss the changing physical heavy-quark mass dependence of decay constants from heavy-heavy through heavy-charm to heavy-strange mesons. A comparison between the three different systems confirms that the B_c system behaves in some ways more like a heavy-light system than a heavy-heavy one. Finally we summarise current results on decay constants of gold-plated mesons.

Accessing High Momentum States In Lattice QCD

Two measures are defined to evaluate the coupling strength of smeared interpolating operators to hadronic states at a variety of momenta. Of particular interest is the extent to which strong overlap can be obtained with individual high-momentum states. This is vital to exploring hadronic structure at high momentum transfers on the lattice and addressing interesting phenomena observed experimentally. We consider a novel idea of altering the shape of the smeared operator to match the Lorentz contraction of the probability distribution of the high-momentum state, and show a reduction in the relative error of the two-point function by employing this technique. Our most important finding is that the overlap of the states becomes very sharp in the smearing parameters at high momenta and fine tuning is required to ensure strong overlap with these states.

Critical couplings and string tensions via lattice matching of RG decimations

We calculate critical couplings and string tensions in SU(2) and SU(3) pure lattice gauge theory by a simple and inexpensive technique of two-lattice matching of RG block transformations. The transformations are potential moving decimations generating plaquette actions with large number of group characters and exhibit rapid approach to a unique renormalized trajectory. Fixing the critical coupling $β_c(N_τ)$ at one value of temporal lattice length $N_τ$ by MC simulation, the critical couplings for any other value of $N_τ$ are then obtained by lattice matching of the block decimations. We obtain $β_c(N_τ)$ values over the range $N_τ= 3 - 32$ and find agreement with MC simulation results to within a few percent in all cases. A similar procedure allows the calculation of string tensions with similarly good agreement with MC data.

Abelian monopoles in finite temperature lattice SU(2) gluodynamics: first study with improved action

The properties of the thermal Abelian color-magnetic monopoles in the maximally Abelian gauge are studied in the deconfinement phase of the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics. To check universality of the monopole properties we employ the tadpole improved Symanzik action. The simulated annealing algorithm combined with multiple gauge copies is applied for fixing the maximally Abelian gauge to avoid effects of Gribov copies. We compute the density, interaction parameters, thermal mass and chemical potential of the thermal Abelian monopoles in the temperature range between Tc and 3Tc. In comparison with earlier findings our results for these quantities are improved either with respect to effects of Gribov copies or with respect to lattice artifacts.

Cooling study of Dirac sheets in SU(3) lattice gauge theory below T_c

Using a standard cooling method for SU(3) lattice gauge fields constant Abelian magnetic field configurations are extracted after dyon-antidyon constituents forming metastable Q=0 configurations have annihilated. These so-called Dirac sheets, standard and non-standard ones, corresponding to the two U(1) subgroups of the SU(3) group, have been found to be stable if emerging from the confined phase, close to the deconfinement phase transition, with sufficiently nontrivial Polyakov loop values. On a finite lattice we find a nice agreement of the numerical observations with the analytic predictions concerning the stability of Dirac sheets depending on the value of the Polyakov loop.

A Perturbative Realization of Miransky Scaling

Near conformal dynamics is employed in different extensions of the standard model of particle interactions as well as in cosmology. Many of its interesting properties are either conjectured or determined using model computations. We introduce a relevant four dimensional gauge theory template allowing us to investigate such dynamics perturbatively. The gauge theory we consider is quantum chromodynamics with the addition of a meson-like scalar degree of freedom as well as an adjoint Weyl fermion. At the two-loop level, and in the Veneziano limit, we firmly establish the existence of several fixed points of which one is all directions stable in the infrared. An interesting feature of the model is that this fixed point is lost, within the perturbatively trustable regime, by merging with another fixed point when varying the number of quark flavors. We show the emergence of the Miransky scaling and determine its properties. We are also able to determine the walking region of the theory which turns out to be, at large number of colors, about 12% of the conformal window. Furthermore, we determine highly relevant quantities for near conformal dynamics such as the anomalous dimension of the fermion masses.

The integral equations of Yang-Mills and its gauge invariant conserved charges

Despite the fact that the integral form of the equations of classical electrodynamics is well known, the same is not true for non-abelian gauge theories. The aim of the present paper is threefold. First, we present the integral form of the classical Yang-Mills equations in the presence of sources, and then use it to solve the long standing problem of constructing conserved charges, for any field configuration, which are invariant under general gauge transformations and not only under transformations that go to a constant at spatial infinity. The construction is based on concepts in loop spaces and on a generalization of the non-abelian Stokes theorem for two-form connections. The third goal of the paper is to present the integral form of the self dual Yangs-Mills equations, and calculate the conserved charges associated to them. The charges are explicitly evaluated for the cases of monopoles, dyons, instantons and merons, and we show that in many cases those charges must be quantized. Our results are important in the understanding of global properties of non-abelian gauge theories.

Vacuum structure and string tension in Yang-Mills dimeron ensembles

We numerically simulate ensembles of SU(2) Yang-Mills dimeron solutions with a statistical weight determined by the classical action and perform a comprehensive analysis of their properties. In particular, we examine the extent to which these ensembles capture topological and confinement properties of the Yang-Mills vacuum. This further allows us to test the classic picture of meron-induced quark confinement as triggered by dimeron dissociation. At small bare couplings, spacial, topological-charge and color correlations among the dimerons generate a short-range order which screens topological charges. With increasing coupling this order weakens rapidly, however, in part because the dimerons gradually dissociate into their meron constituents. Monitoring confinement properties by evaluating Wilson-loop expectation values, we find the growing disorder due to these progressively liberated merons to generate a finite and (with the coupling) increasing string tension. The short-distance behavior of the static quark-antiquark potential, on the other hand, is dominated by small, "instanton-like" dimerons. String tension, action density and topological susceptibility of the dimeron ensembles in the physical coupling region turn out to be of the order of standard values. Hence the above results demonstrate without reliance on weak-coupling or low-density approximations that the dissociating dimeron component in the Yang-Mills vacuum can indeed produce a meron-populated confining phase. The density of coexisting, hardly dissociated and thus instanton-like dimerons seems to remain large enough, on the other hand, to reproduce much of the additional phenomenology successfully accounted for by non-confining instanton vacuum models. Hence dimeron ensembles should provide an efficient basis for a rather complete description of the Yang-Mills vacuum.
