The upper triangular solutions to the three-state constant quantum Yang-Baxter equation

In this article we present all nonsingular upper triangular solutions to the constant quantum Yang-Baxter equation $R_{j_1j_2}^{k_1k_2}R_{k_1j_3}^{l_1k_3}R_{k_2k_3}^{l_2l_3}= R_{j_2j_3}^{k_2k_3}R_{j_1k_3}^{k_1l_3}R_{k_1k_2}^{l_1l_2}$ in the three state case, i.e. all indices ranging from 1 to 3. The upper triangular ansatz implies 729 equations for 45 variables. Fortunately many of the equations turned out to be simple allowing us to start breaking the problem into smaller ones. In the end we had a total of 552 solutions, but many of them were either inherited from two-state solutions or subcases of others. The final list contains 35 nontrivial solutions, most of them new.

Difference equations for the correlation functions of the eight vertex model

We propose that the correlation functions of the inhomogeneous eight vertex model in the anti-ferroelectric regime satisfy a system of difference equations with respect to the spectral parameters. Solving the simplest difference equation we obtain the expression for the spontaneous staggered polarization conjectured by Baxter and Kelland. We discuss also a related construction of vertex operators on the lattice.

Labeling Schemes for Tetrahedron Equations and Dualities between Them

Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equations, which were derived by considering the scattering of straight strings, can be written in three different labeling schemes: one can use as labels the states of the vacua between the strings, the states of the string segments, or the states of the particles at the intersections of the strings. We give a detailed derivation of the three corresponding tetrahedron equations and show also how the Frenkel-Moore equations fits in as a {\em nonlocal} string labeling. We discuss then how an analog of the Wu-Kadanoff duality can be defined between each pair of the above three labeling schemes. It turns out that there are two cases, for which one can simultaneously construct a duality between {\em all} three pairs of labelings.

Exceptional structure of the dilute A$_3$ model: E$_8$ and E$_7$ Rogers--Ramanujan identities

The dilute A$_3$ lattice model in regime 2 is in the universality class of the Ising model in a magnetic field. Here we establish directly the existence of an E$_8$ structure in the dilute A$_3$ model in this regime by expressing the 1-dimensional configuration sums in terms of fermionic sums which explicitly involve the E$_8$ root system. In the thermodynamic limit, these polynomial identities yield a proof of the E$_8$ Rogers--Ramanujan identity recently conjectured by Kedem {\em et al}. The polynomial identities also apply to regime 3, which is obtained by transforming the modular parameter by $q\to 1/q$. In this case we find an A$_1\times\mbox{E}_7$ structure and prove a Rogers--Ramanujan identity of A$_1\times\mbox{E}_7$ type. Finally, in the critical $q\to 1$ limit, we give some intriguing expressions for the number of $L$-step paths on the A$_3$ Dynkin diagram with tadpoles in terms of the E$_8$ Cartan matrix. All our findings confirm the E$_8$ and E$_7$ structure of the dilute A$_3$ model found recently by means of the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz.

On the Monge-Ampere equivalent of the sine-Gordon equation

Surfaces of constant negative curvature in Euclidean space can be described by either the sine-Gordon equation for the angle between asymptotic directions, or a Monge-Ampere equation for the graph of the surface. We present the explicit form of the correspondence between these two integrable non-linear partial differential equations using their well-known properties in differential geometry. We find that the cotangent of the angle between asymptotic directions is directly related to the mean curvature of the surface. This is a Backlund-type transformation between the sine-Gordon and Monge-Ampere equations.

Casorati Determinant Solutions for the Discrete Painlevé-II Equation

We present a class of solutions to the discrete Painlevé-II equation for particular values of its parameters. It is shown that these solutions can be expressed in terms of Casorati determinants whose entries are discrete Airy functions. The analogy between the $τ$ function for the discrete P$_{\rm \romanno2}$ and the that of the discrete Toda molecule equation is pointed out.

Shock waves in the dissipative Toda lattice

We consider the propagation of a shock wave (SW) in the damped Toda lattice. The SW is a moving boundary between two semi-infinite lattice domains with different densities. A steadily moving SW may exist if the damping in the lattice is represented by an ``inner'' friction, which is a discrete analog of the second viscosity in hydrodynamics. The problem can be considered analytically in the continuum approximation, and the analysis produces an explicit relation between the SW's velocity and the densities of the two phases. Numerical simulations of the lattice equations of motion demonstrate that a stable SW establishes if the initial velocity is directed towards the less dense phase; in the opposite case, the wave gradually spreads out. The numerically found equilibrium velocity of the SW turns out to be in a very good agreement with the analytical formula even in a strongly discrete case. If the initial velocity is essentially different from the one determined by the densities (but has the correct sign), the velocity does not significantly alter, but instead the SW adjusts itself to the given velocity by sending another SW in the opposite direction.

Conditional Lie-Bäcklund symmetry and reduction of evolution equations.

We suggest a generalization of the notion of invariance of a given partial differential equation with respect to Lie-Bäcklund vector field. Such generalization proves to be effective and enables us to construct principally new Ansätze reducing evolution-type equations to several ordinary differential equations. In the framework of the said generalization we obtain principally new reductions of a number of nonlinear heat conductivity equations $u_t=u_{xx}+F(u,u_x)$ with poor Lie symmetry and obtain their exact solutions. It is shown that these solutions can not be constructed by means of the symmetry reduction procedure.

Separation of Variables in BC-type Gaudin Magnet

The integrable system is introduced based on the Poisson $ rs $-matrix structure. This is a generalization of the Gaudin magnet, and in SL(2) case isomorphic to the generalized Neumann model. The separation of variables is discussed for both classical and quantum case.

On the integrability of stationary and restricted flows of the KdV hierarchy.

A bi--Hamiltonian formulation for stationary flows of the KdV hierarchy is derived in an extended phase space. A map between stationary flows and restricted flows is constructed: in a case it connects an integrable Henon--Heiles system and the Garnier system. Moreover a new integrability scheme for Hamiltonian systems is proposed, holding in the standard phase space.

Solution of the dispersionless Hirota equations

The dispersionless differential Fay identity is shown to be equivalent to a kernel expansion providing a universal algebraic characterization and solution of the dispersionless Hirota equations. Some calculations based on D-bar data of the action are also indicated.

Integrable boundary conditions for the Toda lattice

The problem of construction of the boundary conditions for the Toda lattice compatible with its higher symmetries is considered. It is demonstrated that this problem is reduced to finding of the differential constraints consistent with the ZS-AKNS hierarchy. A method of their construction is offered based on the Bäcklund transformations. It is shown that the generalized Toda lattices corresponding to the non-exceptional Lie algebras of finite growth can be obtained by imposing one of the four simplest integrable boundary conditions on the both ends of the lattice. This fact allows, in particular, to solve the problem of reduction of the series $A$ Toda lattices into the series $D$ ones. Deformations of the found boundary conditions are presented which leads to the Painlevé type equations. Key words: Toda lattice, boundary conditions, integrability, Bäcklund transformation, Lie algebras, Painlevé equations
