Commensurate vs incommensurate charge ordering near the superconducting dome in Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ revealed by resonant x-ray scattering

The electronic-structural modulations of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ (0 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.12) have been examined by resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) techniques at both the Ir and Te edges. Charge-density-wave-like superstructure with wave vectors of $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5), (1/8 0 $-$1/8), and (1/6 0 $-$1/6) are observed on the same sample of IrTe$_2$ at the lowest temperature, the patterns of which are controlled by the cooling speeds. In contrast, superstructures around $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5) are observed for doped samples (0.02 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.05). The superstructure reflections persist to higher Pt substitution than previously assumed, demonstrating that a charge density wave (CDW) can coexists with superconductivity. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS and RIXS lineshape reveals the importance of the Te 5$p$ state rather than the Ir 5$d$ states in the formation of the spatial modulation of these systems. The phase diagram re-examined in this work suggests that the CDW incommensurability may correlate the emergence of superconducting states as-like Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ and Li$_x$TaS$_2$.

The role of canting and depleted-triplet minima in superconducting spin valve structures

The trilayer and pentalayer spin valve structures are revisited to determine the behavior of pair correlations and Josephson current when the magnetic layers are canted at arbitrary angle. The two systems display markedly different behaviors in the center magnetic layer. While the trilayer generates a triplet component that is weakly affected by canting, the pentalayer tunes in singlet pair correlations depending heavily on canting. We also show that a minimum with depleted $m=\pm1$ triplet components, rather than a $0-π$ transition, may be observed in the current profile $I_c(d_F)$ of a trilayer spin valve. The depleted-triplet minimum (DTM) is directly attributable to a decrease of $m=\pm1$ triplet correlations with increased thickness of the central ferromagnet, accompanied by a hidden, simultaneous sign change of the Gor'kov functions contributed from the left and right superconductors. We introduce a toy model for superconducting-magnetic proximity systems to better illuminate the behavior of individual components of the Gor'kov function and compare with a full numerical calculation.

Sequential superconductor-Bose insulator-Fermi insulator phase transitions in two-dimensional a-WSi

A zero-temperature magnetic-field-driven superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in quasi-two-dimensional superconductors is expected to occur when the applied magnetic-field crosses a certain critical value. A fundamental question is whether this transition is due to the localization of Cooper pairs or due to the destruction of them. Here we address this question by studying the SIT in amorphous WSi. Transport measurements reveal the localization of Cooper pairs at a quantum critical field B_c^1 (Bose-insulator), with a product of the correlation length and dynamical exponents zv~4/3 near the quantum critical point (QCP). Beyond B_c^1, superconducting fluctuations still persist at finite temperatures. Above a second critical field B_c^2>B_c^1, the Cooper pairs are destroyed and the film becomes a Fermi-insulator. The different phases all merge at a tricritical point at finite temperatures with zv=2/3. Our results suggest a sequential superconductor to Bose insulator to Fermi insulator phase transition, which differs from the conventional scenario involving a single quantum critical point.

Pairing symmetry of interacting fermions on twisted bilayer graphene superlattice

The pairing symmetry of an effective Hamiltonian for interacting fermions on a twisted bilayer graphene superlattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The model has the symmetry of a triangle lattice and a nearly-flat low energy band, features which underlie the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene superlattice. We show that the low temperature phase is insulating at half-filling, even for relatively weak interactions. The natures of the spin and pairing correlations upon doping are determined, and exhibit an electron-hole asymmetry consistent with experiment. Among the pairing symmetries allowed, we demonstrate that the dominating channels are $d$-wave, opening the possibility of condensation into an unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ phase, which is characterized by an integer topological invariant and gapless edge states.

Spectral probes of the holographic Fermi groundstate: dialing between the electron star and AdS Dirac hair

We argue that the electron star and the AdS Dirac hair solution are two limits of the free charged Fermi gas in AdS. Spectral functions of holographic duals to probe fermions in the background of electron stars have a free parameter that quantifies the number of constituent fermions that make up the charge and energy density characterizing the electron star solution. The strict electron star limit takes this number to be infinite. The Dirac hair solution is the limit where this number is unity. This is evident in the behavior of the distribution of holographically dual Fermi surfaces. As we decrease the number of constituents in a fixed electron star background the number of Fermi surfaces also decreases. An improved holographic Fermi groundstate should be a configuration that shares the qualitative properties of both limits.

A Holographic Chiral p_x + ip_y Superconductor

Using a string inspired model we construct gravity duals generalizing px and p_x + ip_y superconductors. Introducing a Chern-Simons coupling in the gravity side we demonstrate the ability to control which phase dominates at low temperatures, and focus on the chiral p_x + ip_y phase. We study the fermionic spectral function and establish that the behavior is rather different from the standard p-wave two-nodes model.

Generalized index theorem for topological superconductors with Yang-Mills-Higgs couplings

We investigate an index theorem for a Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian (BdGH) describing a topological superconductor with Yang-Mills-Higgs couplings in arbitrary dimensions. We find that the index of the BdGH is determined solely by the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs fields and is independent of the gauge fields. It can be nonvanishing if the dimensionality of the order parameter space is equal to the spatial dimensions. In the presence of point defects there appear localized zero energy states at the defects. Consistency of the index with the existence of zero energy bound states is examined explicitly in a vortex background in two dimensions and in a monopole background in three dimensions.

Oscillons and oscillating kinks in the Abelian-Higgs model

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of direct numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement with the analytical findings, and show that the oscillons are robust, while kinks are unstable. It is also demonstrated that oscillons emerge spontaneously as a result of the onset of the modulational instability of plane wave solutions of the model. Connections of the results with the phenomenology of superconductors is discussed.

Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity and superfluidity of W and Z bosons: in tandem transport and kaleidoscopic vortex states

We show that in a background of a sufficiently strong magnetic field the electroweak sector of the quantum vacuum exhibits superconducting and, unexpectedly, superfluid properties due to the magnetic-field-induced condensation of, respectively, W and Z bosons. The phase transition to the "tandem" superconductor-superfluid phase -- which is weakly sensitive to the Higgs sector of the standard model -- occurs at the critical magnetic field of 10^{20} T. The superconductor-superfluid phase of the electroweak vacuum has anisotropic transport properties as both charged and neutral superflows may propagate only along the magnetic field axis. The ground state possesses an unusual "kaleidoscopic" structure made of a hexagonal lattice of superfluid vortices superimposed on a triangular lattice of superconductor vortices.

Non-Abelian statistics of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions

We extend our previous analysis on the exchange statistics of vortices having a single Dirac fermion trapped in each core, to the case where vortices trap two Dirac fermions with U(2) symmetry. Such a system of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions appears in color superconductors at extremely high densities, and in supersymmetric QCD. We show that the exchange of two vortices having doublet Dirac fermions in each core is expressed by non-Abelian representations of a braid group, which is explicitly verified in the matrix representation of the exchange operators when the number of vortices is up to four. We find that the result contains the matrices previously obtained for the vortices with a single Dirac fermion in each core as a special case. The whole braid group does not immediately imply non-Abelian statistics of identical particles because it also contains exchanges between vortices with different numbers of Dirac fermions. However, we find that it does contain, as its subgroup, a genuine non-Abelian statistics for the exchange of the identical particles, that is, vortices with the same number of Dirac fermions. This result is surprising compared with conventional understanding because all Dirac fermions are defined locally at each vortex, unlike the case of Majorana fermions for which Dirac fermions are defined non-locally by Majorana fermions located at two spatially separated vortices.

Dynamics of self-organized driven particles with competing range interaction

Non-equilibrium self-organized patterns formed by particles interacting through competing range interaction are driven over a substrate by an external force. We show that, with increasing driving force, the pre-existed static patterns evolve into dynamic patterns either via disordered phase or depinned patterns, or via the formation of non-equilibrium stripes. Strikingly, the stripes are formed either in the direction of the driving force or in the transverse direction, depending on the pinning strength. The revealed dynamical patterns are summarized in a dynamical phase diagram.

Demonstration of a Tuneable Coupler for Superconducting Qubits Using Coherent, Time Domain, Two-Qubit Operations

A major challenge in the field of quantum computing is the construction of scalable qubit coupling architectures. Here, we demonstrate a novel tuneable coupling circuit that allows superconducting qubits to be coupled over long distances. We show that the inter-qubit coupling strength can be arbitrarily tuned over nanosecond timescales within a sequence that mimics actual use in an algorithm. The coupler has a measured on/off ratio of 1000. The design is self-contained and physically separate from the qubits, allowing the coupler to be used as a module to connect a variety of elements such as qubits, resonators, amplifiers, and readout circuitry over long distances. Such design flexibility is likely to be essential for a scalable quantum computer.

Flux Periodicities and Quantum Hair on Holographic Superconductors

Superconductors in a cylindrical geometry respond periodically to a cylinder-threading magnetic flux, with the period changing from hc/2e to hc/e depending on whether the Aharonov-Bohm effects are suppressed or not. We show that Holographic Superconductors present a similar phenomenon, and that the different periodicities follow from classical no-hair theorems. We also give the Ginzburg-Landau description of the period-doubling phenomenon.

A de Haas-van Alphen study of the Fermi surfaces of superconducting LiFeP and LiFeAs

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study of the 111 iron pnictide superconductors LiFeAs with T_c ~18K and LiFeP with T_c~5K. We find that for both compounds the Fermi surface topology is in good agreement with density functional band-structure calculations and shows quasi-nested electron and hole bands. The effective masses generally show significant enhancement, up to ~3 for LiFeP and ~5 for LiFeAs. However, one hole Fermi surface in LiFeP shows a very small enhancement, as compared with its other sheets. This difference probably results from k-dependent coupling to spin fluctuations and may be the origin of the different nodal and nodeless superconducting gap structures in LiFeP and LiFeAs respectively.

Time-Reversal Symmetry and Universal Conductance Fluctuations in a Driven Two-Level System

In the presence of time-reversal symmetry, quantum interference gives strong corrections to the electric conductivity of disordered systems. The self-interference of an electron wavefunction traveling time-reversed paths leads to effects such as weak localization and universal conductance fluctuations. Here, we investigate the effects of broken time-reversal symmetry in a driven artificial two-level system. Using a superconducting flux qubit, we implement scattering events as multiple Landau-Zener transitions by driving the qubit periodically back and forth through an avoided crossing. Interference between different qubit trajectories give rise to a speckle pattern in the qubit transition rate, similar to the interference patterns created when coherent light is scattered off a disordered potential. Since the scattering events are imposed by the driving protocol, we can control the time-reversal symmetry of the system by making the drive waveform symmetric or asymmetric in time. We find that the fluctuations of the transition rate exhibit a sharp peak when the drive is time-symmetric, similar to universal conductance fluctuations in electronic transport through mesoscopic systems.

EuFe2(As1-xPx)2: reentrant spin glass and superconductivity

By systematic investigations of the magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of single crystals of EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 we explore the complex interplay of superconductivity and Eu2+ magnetism. Below 30K, two magnetic transitions are observed for all P substituted crystals suggesting a revision of the phase diagram. In addition to the canted A-type antiferromagnetic order of Eu2+ at approximately 20K, a spin glass transition is discovered at lower temperatures. Most remarkably, the reentrant spin glass state of EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 coexists with superconductivity around x = 0.2.

Avoided quantum criticality and magnetoelastic coupling in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

We study the structural and magnetic orders in electron-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2 by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron scatterings. Upon Ni-doping x, the nearly simultaneous tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural T_s and antiferromagnetic (T_N) phase transitions in BaFe2As2 are gradually suppressed and separated, resulting in T_s>T_N with increasing x as was previously observed. However, the temperature separation between T_s and T_N decreases with increasing x for x> 0.065$, tending towards a quantum bi-critical point near optimal superconductivity at x=0.1. The zero-temperature transition is preempted by the formation of a secondary incommensurate magnetic phase in the region 0.088< x < 0.104, resulting in a finite value of T_N \approx T_c+10$ K above the superconducting dome around $x\approx 0.1$. Our results imply an avoided quantum critical point, which is expected to strongly influence the properties of both the normal and superconducting states.

Nonclassical photon pair production in a voltage-biased Josephson junction

We investigate electromagnetic radiation emitted by a small voltage-biased Josephson junction connected to a superconducting transmission line. At frequencies below the well known emission peak at the Josephson frequency (2eV/h), extra radiation is triggered by quantum fluctuations in the electromagnetic environment. For weak tunneling couplings and typical ohmic transmission lines, the corresponding photon flux spectrum is symmetric around half the Josephson frequency, indicating that the photons are predominately created in pairs. By establishing an input-output formalism for the microwave field in the transmission line, we give further evidence for this nonclassical photon pair production, demonstrating that it violates the classical Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for two-mode flux cross correlations. In connection to recent experiments, we also consider a stepped transmission line, where resonances increase the signal-to-noise ratio.
