Vortices and Angular Momentum in Bose-Einstein-Condensed Cold Dark Matter Halos

If cold dark matter elementary particles form a Bose-Einstein condensate, their superfluidity may distinguish them from other forms of cold dark matter, including creation of quantum vortices. We demonstrate here that such vortices are favoured in strongly-coupled condensates, while this is not the case for axions, which are generally presumed to form a Bose-Einstein condensate but are effectively non-interacting.

One dimensional gas of bosons with integrable resonant interactions

We develop an exact solution to the problem of one dimensional chiral bosons interacting via an s-wave Feshbach resonance. This problem is integrable, being the quantum analog of a classical two-wave model solved by the inverse scattering method thirty years ago. Its solution describes one or two branches of dressed chiral right moving molecules depending on the chemical potential (particle density). We also briefly discuss the possibility of experimental realization of such a system.

Zeno Dynamics and Distinguishability of Quantum States

According to the quantum Zeno effect, the frequent observations of a system can dramatically slow down its dynamical evolution. We show that the Zeno dynamics is the result of projective measurements among quantum states which are indistinguishable. The physical time scale of the problem is provided by the Cramer-Rao lower bound, which measure the distinguishability of states along a path in the Hilbert space. We finally show that the Zeno dynamics with particle entangled states might require quite smaller measurement intervals than classically correlated states, and propose a realistic interferometric experiment to test the prediction.

Berry's Phase for Ultracold Atoms in an Accelerated Optical Lattice

Berry's phase is investigated for ultracold atoms in a frequency modulated optical lattice. It is shown that Berry's phase appears due to Bloch oscillation and the periodic motion of the optical lattice. Particularly, Berry's phase for ultracold atoms under the gravitational force in an oscillating tight-binding optical lattice is calculated analytically. It is found that the Berry's phase depends linearly on the amplitude of the oscillation of the optical lattice.

Shards of Broken Symmetry: Topological Defects as Traces of the Phase Transition Dynamics

We discuss the origin of topological defects in phase transitions and analyze their role as a "diagnostic tool" in the study of the non-equilibrium dynamics of symmetry breaking. Homogeneous second order phase transitions are the focus of our attention, but the same paradigm is applied to the cross-over and inhomogeneous transitions. The discrepancy between the experimental results in 3He and 4He is discussed in the light of recent numerical studies. The possible role of the Ginzburg regime in determining the vortex line density for the case of a quench in 4He is raised and tentatively dismissed. The difference in the anticipated origin of the dominant signal in the two (3He and 4He) cases is pointed out and the resulting consequences for the subsequent decay of vorticity are noted. The possibility of a significant discrepancy between the effective field theory and (quantum) kinetic theory descriptions of the order parameter is briefly touched upon, using atomic Bose-Einstein condensates as an example.

Quantum Melting of a Wigner crystal of Rotating Dipolar Fermions in the Lowest Landau Level

We have investigated the behavior and stability of a Wigner crystal of rotating dipolar fermions in two dimensions. Using an ansatz wave function for the ground state of rotating two-dimensional dipolar fermions, which occupy only partially the lowest Landau level, we study the correlation energy, elastic moduli and collective modes of Wigner crystals in the lowest Landau level. We then calculate the mean square of the displacement vector of Wigner crystals. The critical filling factor, below which the crystalline state is expected, is evaluated at absolute zero by use of the Lindeman's criterion. We find that the particle (hole) crystal is locally stable for filling factor is less than 1/15 (between filling factors 14/15 and 1), where the stable regime of the crystal is much narrower than the result from Baranov, Fehrmann and Lewenstein, [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 200402 (2008)].

Coherent Atomic Soliton Molecules

We discuss the dynamics of interacting atomic bright solitons and dark bubbles in bulk immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates. Coherent matter-wave clusters can be constructed using dark-bright pairs with appropriate phases. In two dimensions we describe novel types of matter-wave molecules without a scalar counterpart that can be seen as bound states of vector objects.

Effect of an Impurity on Grey Soliton Dynamics in Cigar-Shaped Bose-Einstein Condensate

In a cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate, explicit solutions of the coupled mean-field equations, describing defect-grey soliton dynamics are obtained, demonstrating the coexistence of grey soliton and a localized defect. Unlike the case of dark soliton, where the defect trapping center has vanishing superfluid density, the moving grey soliton necessarily possesses a finite superfluid component at the defect location. The wave vector of the impurity is controlled by the velocity of the grey soliton, which has an upper bound. It is found that the presence of the impurity lowers the speed of the grey soliton, as compared to the defect free case, where it can reach the sound velocity. The grey soliton's energy gets substantially modified through its interaction with the defect, opening up the possibility of its control through defect dynamics.

Ferromagnetism in repulsive Fermi gases: upper branch of Feshbach resonance versus hard spheres

We use quantum Monte Carlo, including backflow corrections, to investigate a two-component Fermi gas on the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance and contrast it with the hard sphere gas. We find that, in both cases, the Fermi liquid becomes unstable to ferromagnetism at a $k_F a$ smaller than the mean field result, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavevector and $a$ the scattering length. Even though the total energies $E(k_F a)$ are similar in the two cases, their pair correlations and kinetic energies are completely different, reflecting the underlying potentials. We discuss the extent to which our calculations shed light on recent experiments.

Wigner Crystallization of Rotating Dipolar Fermions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

We show the possible existence of the Wigner crystal (WC) in the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) regime. We find that the Landau-level mixing (LLM) will lower the energy of the WC significantly in the high-density regime. The WC is lower in energy than the FQH liquid in the high-density regime. We conclude that the crystal phase is expected at high density for rotating dipolar gases, which is consistent with non-rotating dipolar gases, but is inconsistent with the low-density conclusion from Baranov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 200402 (2008)], where the effect of LLM is ignored.

Quantized vortices in superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

This article reviews recent developments in the physics of quantized vortices in superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Quantized vortices appear in low-temperature quantum condensed systems as the direct product of Bose-Einstein condensation. Quantized vortices were first discovered in superfluid 4He in the 1950s, and have since been studied with a primary focus on the quantum hydrodynamics of this system. Since the discovery of superfluid 3He in 1972, quantized vortices characteristic of the anisotropic superfluid have been studied theoretically and observed experimentally using rotating cryostats. The realization of atomic Bose-Einstein condensation in 1995 has opened new possibilities, because it became possible to control and directly visualize condensates and quantized vortices. Historically, many ideas developed in superfluid 4He and 3He have been imported to the field of cold atoms and utilized effectively. Here, we review and summarize our current understanding of quantized vortices, bridging superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. This review article begins with a basic introduction, which is followed by discussion of modern topics such as quantum turbulence and vortices in unusual cold atom condensates.

An Artificial Frustrated System: Cold Atoms in 2D Triangular Optical Lattice

We investigate the strongly correlated effect of cold atoms in triangular optical lattice by dynamical cluster approximation combining with the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method proposed recently. It is found the double occupancy is suppressed as the atomic interaction increases. By calculating the density of states, we show how the system evolves from Fermi liquid with an obvious quasi-particle peak into Mott insulator with an opened gap for increasing interaction. The transition between Fermi liquid and pseudogap shows a reentrant behavior due to the Kondo effect. At low temperature, a Kondo peak appears before the splitting of the Fermi-liquid-like peak. The Fermi surface evolves from a circular ring with high amplitude into a °at elliptical ring with low amplitude for the increasing interaction. We give an experimental protocol to observe these phenomena by varying the lattice depth and the atomic interaction via Feshbach resonance in future experiments.

Cold Atom Qubits

We discuss a laser-trapped cold-atom superfluid qubit system. Each qubit is proposed as a macroscopic two-state system based on a set of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) currents circulating in a ring, cut with a Josephson barrier. We review the effective low energy description of a single BEC ring. In particular, it is demonstrated that such system has a set of metastable current states which, for certain range of parameters, form an effective two-state system, or a qubit. We show how this qubit can be initialized and manipulated with currently available laser-trapping techniques. We also discuss mechanisms of coupling several such ring qubits as well as measuring individual qubit-ring systems.

Numerical generation of a vortex ring cascade in quantum turbulence

A symmetric anti-parallel quantum pair of vortices is simulated using the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevski equations. The initial development before cores interact directly demonstrates the traditional vortex dynamics of stretching, curvature and torsion in a manner consistent with a filament calculation and simulations of the classical, ideal Euler equations. Once the cores begin to interact, reconnection develops in the vacuum that forms between the pair. Out of the reconnection region, vortex waves are emitted with properties similar to waves in the local induction approximation. These waves propagate down the initial vortex and deepen. When they deepen far enough, secondary reconnections occur and vortex rings form. Near this time, spectra have a $k^{-3}$ regime. As the vortex rings fully separate, the high wavenumber spectra grow until, at the final time simulated, spectra in two directions develop nearly -5/3 subranges. This occurs without the dissipation of energy. Preliminary analysis of the flow of energies in spectral scale and physical space is discussed.

A nonlinear quantum piston for the controlled generation of vortex rings

We propose a simple way to manage interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates to generate vortex rings in a highly controllable way. The vortex rings are generated under the action of a quantum analogue of a classical piston pushing the condensed atoms through a small aperture.

Permanent magnetic microtraps for ultracold atoms

We propose and numerically study two permanent magnetic micro-structures for creating Ioffe-Pritchard microtraps. A bias magnetic field is used to vary the depth, trap frequencies and the minimum of each microtrap. After the Bose-Einstein condensation achievement, the bias magnetic field can be slowly removed to increase the trap barrier heights for more efficiently holding the Bose-Einstein condensates. Even without the external magnetic field, it is possible to hold ultracold atoms in the microtraps. These microtraps may also be useful for single atom experiments for quantum information processing due to their very high confinement.

Optical probing of correlation driven liquid-to-insulator transition in 2D electron gas

We study the quantum Hall liquid and the metal-insulator transition in a high mobility two dimensional electron gas, by means of photoluminescence and magneto-transport. In the integer and fractional regime at nu > 1/3, analyzing the emission energy dispersion we probe the magneto-Coulomb screening and the hidden symmetry of the electron liquid. In the fractional regime above above nu =1/3 the system undergoes the metal-to-insulator transition, and in the insulating phase the dispersion becomes linear with evidence of an increased renormalized mass.

Observation of universal behaviour of ultracold quantum critical gases

Quantum critical matter has already been studied in many systems, including cold atomic gases. We report the observation of a universal behaviour of ultracold quantum critical Bose gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In the quantum critical region above the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, the relative phase fluctuations between neighboring subcondensates and spatial phase fluctuations of quasi-2D subcondensates coexist. We study the density probability distribution function when both these two phase fluctuations are considered. A universal exponential density probability distribution is demonstrated experimentally, which agrees well with a simple theoretical model by considering these two phase fluctuations.
