Rapid Mixing of Gibbs Sampling on Graphs that are Sparse on Average

In this work we show that for every $d < \infty$ and the Ising model defined on $G(n,d/n)$, there exists a $β_d > 0$, such that for all $β< β_d$ with probability going to 1 as $n \to \infty$, the mixing time of the dynamics on $G(n,d/n)$ is polynomial in $n$. Our results are the first polynomial time mixing results proven for a natural model on $G(n,d/n)$ for $d > 1$ where the parameters of the model do not depend on $n$. They also provide a rare example where one can prove a polynomial time mixing of Gibbs sampler in a situation where the actual mixing time is slower than $n \polylog(n)$. Our proof exploits in novel ways the local treelike structure of Erdős-Rényi random graphs, comparison and block dynamics arguments and a recent result of Weitz. Our results extend to much more general families of graphs which are sparse in some average sense and to much more general interactions. In particular, they apply to any graph for which every vertex $v$ of the graph has a neighborhood $N(v)$ of radius $O(\log n)$ in which the induced sub-graph is a tree union at most $O(\log n)$ edges and where for each simple path in $N(v)$ the sum of the vertex degrees along the path is $O(\log n)$. Moreover, our result apply also in the case of arbitrary external fields and provide the first FPRAS for sampling the Ising distribution in this case. We finally present a non Markov Chain algorithm for sampling the distribution which is effective for a wider range of parameters. In particular, for $G(n,d/n)$ it applies for all external fields and $β< β_d$, where $d \tanh(β_d) = 1$ is the critical point for decay of correlation for the Ising model on $G(n,d/n)$.

Interaction of modulated pulses in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential

We consider a cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential. In a semiclassical scaling the nonlinear interaction of modulated pulses concentrated in one or several Bloch bands is studied. The notion of closed mode systems is introduced which allows for the rigorous derivation of a finite system of amplitude equations describing the macroscopic dynamics of these pulses.

Semiclassical wave propagation for large times

We study solutions of the time dependent Schrödinger equation on Riemannian manifolds with oscillatory initial conditions given by Lagrangian states. Semiclassical approximations describe these solutions for small h (where h is the semiclassical parameter), but their accuracy for large times is in general only understood up to the Ehrenfest time T ~ ln(1/h), and the most difficult case is the one where the underlying classical system is chaotic. We show that on surfaces of constant negative curvature semiclassical approximations remain accurate for times at least up to T ~ h^(-1/2) in the case that the Lagrangian state is associated with an unstable manifold of the geodesic flow.

A unified, purely affine theory of gravitation and electromagnetism

In the purely affine formulation of gravity, the gravitational field is represented by the symmetric part of the Ricci tensor of the affine connection. The classical electromagnetic field can be represented in this formulation by the second Ricci tensor of the connection. Such a construction is dynamically equivalent to the sourceless Einstein-Maxwell equations. We generalize this construction to the case with sources, represented by the derivative of the affine Lagrangian density with respect to the connection. We show that the Maxwell equations with sources emerge for the simplest affine Lagrangian for matter, while the Einstein and Lorentz equations arise if mass has electromagnetic origin. We also show that the Maxwell equations replace the unphysical constraint imposed by the projective invariance of purely affine Lagrangians that depend explicitly on the connection.

The Integrals of Motion for the Deformed Virasoro Algebra

We explicitly construct two classes of infinitly many commutative operators in terms of the deformed Virasoro algebra. We call one of them local integrals and the other nonlocal one, since they can be regarded as elliptic deformations of the local and nonlocal integrals of motion obtained by V.Bazhanov, S.Lukyanov and Al.Zamolodchikov.

Influence of the extent of the eigenstates of a system on the resonances formed through its coupling to a field

We examine resonances for two systems consisting of a particle coupled to a massless boson's field. The field is the free field in the whole space. In the first system, the particle is confined inside a ball. We show that besides the usual energy levels of the particle, which have become complex through the coupling to the field, other resonances are to be taken into account if the ball's radius is comparable to the particle's Compton wavelength. In the second system, the particle is in a finite-depth square-well potential. We study the way the resonances' width depends on the extent of the uncoupled particle's wave functions. In both cases, we limit ourselves to considering two levels of the particle only.

Nonholonomic Ricci Flows: Exact Solutions and Gravity

In a number of physically important cases, the nonholonomically (nonintegrable) constrained Ricci flows can be modelled by exact solutions of Einstein equations with nonhomogeneous (anisotropic) cosmological constants. We develop two geometric methods for constructing such solutions: The first approach applies the formalism of nonholonomic frame deformations when the gravitational evolution and field equations transform into systems of nonlinear partial differential equations which can be integrated in general form. The second approach develops a general scheme when one (two) parameter families of exact solutions are defined by any source-free solutions of Einstein's equations with one (two) Killing vector field(s). A successive iteration procedure results in a class of solutions characterized by an infinite number of parameters for a non-Abelian group involving arbitrary functions on one variable. We also consider nonlinear superpositions of some mentioned classes of solutions in order to construct more general integral varieties of the Ricci flow and Einstein equations depending on infinite number of parameters and three/ four coordinates on four/ five dimensional (semi) Riemannian spaces.

Continuous time random walk, Mittag-Leffler waiting time and fractional diffusion: mathematical aspects

We show the asymptotic long-time equivalence of a generic power law waiting time distribution to the Mittag-Leffler waiting time distribution, characteristic for a time fractional CTRW. This asymptotic equivalence is effected by a combination of "rescaling" time and "respeeding" the relevant renewal process followed by a passage to a limit for which we need a suitable relation between the parameters of rescaling and respeeding. Turning our attention to spatially 1-D CTRWs with a generic power law jump distribution, "rescaling" space can be interpreted as a second kind of "respeeding" which then, again under a proper relation between the relevant parameters leads in the limit to the space-time fractional diffusion equation. Finally, we treat the `time fractional drift" process as a properly scaled limit of the counting number of a Mittag-Leffler renewal process.

On Some New Proof of the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk Theorem (Nonequilibrium Renormalization Theory II)

It is usually used a complicated combinatorics to prove the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk theorem. In the present paper we give a proof of the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk theorem which use a simple combinatorics. To give this proof we interpret Feynman amplitudes as distributions on the space of α-parameters. We will use this technique in the next paper to give a proof that the divergences in nonequilibrium diagram technique can be subtracted by means the counterterms of asymptotical state.

Quantum Cohomology and Crepant Resolutions: A Conjecture

We give an expository account of a conjecture, developed by Coates--Corti--Iritani--Tseng and Ruan, which relates the quantum cohomology of a Gorenstein orbifold X to the quantum cohomology of a crepant resolution Y of X. We explore some consequences of this conjecture, showing that it implies versions of both the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture and of the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan--Graber. We also give a "quantized" version of the conjecture, which determines higher-genus Gromov--Witten invariants of X from those of Y.

Lie Symmetries, Painlevé analysis and global dynamics for the temporal equation of radiating stars

We study the temporal equation of radiating stars by using three powerful methods for the analysis of nonlinear differential equations. Specifically, we investigate the global dynamics for the given master ordinary differential equation to understand the evolution of solutions for various initial conditions as also to investigate the existence of asymptotic solutions. Moreover, with the application of Lie's theory, we can reduce the order of the master differential equation, while an exact similarity solution is determined. Finally, the master equation possesses the Painlevé property, which means that the analytic solution can be expressed in terms of a Laurent expansion.

Extended Riemannian Geometry I: Local Double Field Theory

We present an extended version of Riemannian geometry suitable for the description of current formulations of double field theory (DFT). This framework is based on graded manifolds and it yields extended notions of symmetries, dynamical data and constraints. In special cases, we recover general relativity with and without 1-, 2- and 3-form gauge potentials as well as DFT. We believe that our extended Riemannian geometry helps to clarify the role of various constructions in DFT. For example, it leads to a covariant form of the strong section condition. Furthermore, it should provide a useful step towards global and coordinate invariant descriptions of T- and U-duality invariant field theories.

Asymptotics for products of characteristic polynomials in classical $β$-Ensembles

We study the local properties of eigenvalues for the Hermite (Gaussian), Laguerre (Chiral) and Jacobi $β$-ensembles of $N\times N$ random matrices. More specifically, we calculate scaling limits of the expectation value of products of characteristic polynomials as $N\to\infty$. In the bulk of the spectrum of each $β$-ensemble, the same scaling limit is found to be $e^{p_{1}}{}_1F_{1}$ whose exact expansion in terms of Jack polynomials is well known. The scaling limit at the soft edge of the spectrum for the Hermite and Laguerre $β$-ensembles is shown to be a multivariate Airy function, which is defined as a generalized Kontsevich integral. As corollaries, when $β$ is even, scaling limits of the $k$-point correlation functions for the three ensembles are obtained. The asymptotics of the multivariate Airy function for large and small arguments is also given. All the asymptotic results rely on a generalization of Watson's lemma and the steepest descent method for integrals of Selberg type.

From Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich-Witten tau-function: a connection by Virasoro operators

In this letter,we present our conjecture on the connection between the Kontsevich--Witten and the Hurwitz tau-functions. The conjectural formula connects these two tau-functions by means of the $GL(\infty)$ group element. An important feature of this group element is its simplicity: this is a group element of the Virasoro subalgebra of $gl(\infty)$. If proved, this conjecture would allow to derive the Virasoro constraints for the Hurwitz tau-function, which remain unknown in spite of existence of several matrix model representations, as well as to give an integrable operator description of the Kontsevich--Witten tau-function.

Norm resolvent convergence of singularly scaled Schrödinger operators and δ'-potentials

For a real-valued function V from the Faddeev-Marchenko class, we prove the norm resolvent convergence, as εgoes to 0, of a family S_εof one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the line of the form S_ε:= -D^2 + ε^{-2} V(x/ε). Under certain conditions the family of potentials converges in the sense of distributions to the first derivative of the Dirac delta-function, and then the limit of S_εmight be considered as a "physically motivated" interpretation of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with potential δ'.

Numerical Regularization of Electromagnetic Quantum Fluctuations in Inhomogeneous Dielectric Media

Electromagnetic Casimir stresses are of relevance to many technologies based on mesoscopic devices such as MEMS embedded in dielectric media, Casimir induced friction in nano-machinery, micro-fluidics and molecular electronics. Computation of such stresses based on cavity QED generally require numerical analysis based on a regularization process. A new scheme is described that has the potential for wide applicability to systems involving realistic inhomogeneous media. From a knowledge of the spectrum of the stationary modes of the electromagnetic field the scheme is illustrated by estimating numerically the Casimir stress on opposite faces of a pair of perfectly conducting planes separated by a vacuum and the change in this result when the region between the plates is filled with an incompressible inhomogeneous non-dispersive dielectric.

WKB Analysis of PT-Symmetric Sturm-Liouville problems. II

In a previous paper it was shown that a one-turning-point WKB approximation gives an accurate picture of the spectrum of certain non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonians on a finite interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Potentials to which this analysis applies include the linear potential $V=igx$ and the sinusoidal potential $V=ig\sin(αx)$. However, the one-turning-point analysis fails to give the full structure of the spectrum for the cubic potential $V=igx^3$, and in particular it fails to reproduce the critical points at which two real eigenvalues merge and become a complex-conjugate pair. The present paper extends the method to cases where the WKB path goes through a {\it pair} of turning points. The extended method gives an extremely accurate approximation to the spectrum of $V=igx^3$, and more generally it works for potentials of the form $V=igx^{2N+1}$. When applied to potentials with half-integral powers of $x$, the method again works well for one sign of the coupling, namely that for which the turning points lie on the first sheet in the lower-half plane.

Quantum Bose and Fermi gases with large negative scattering length in the 2-body S-matrix approximation

We study both Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature and density in an approximation that sums an infinite number of many body processes that are reducible to 2-body scatterings. This is done for arbitrary negative scattering length, which interpolates between the ideal and unitary gas limits. In the unitary limit, we compute the first four virial coefficients within our approximation. The second virial coefficient is exact, and we extend the previously known result for fermions to bosons, and also for both bosons and fermions for the upper branch on the other side of unitarity (infinitely large positive scattering length). Assuming bosons can exist in a meta-stable state before undergoing mechanical collapse, we map out the critical temperatures for strongly coupled Bose-Einstein condensation as a function of scattering length.
