Soliton splitting by external delta potentials

We show that a soliton scattered by an external delta potential splits into two solitons and a radiation term. Theoretical analysis gives the amplitudes and phases of the reflected and transmitted solitons with errors going to zero as the velocity of the incoming soliton tends to infinity. Numerical analysis shows that this asymptotic relation is valid for all but very slow solitons. We also show that the total transmitted mass, that is the square of the $L^2$ norm of the solution restricted on the transmitted side of the delta potential is in good agreement with the quantum transmission rate of the delta potential. This paper is a numerical companion to our analytical paper on the same topic, "Fast soliton scattering by delta impurities," math.AP/0602187.

Absolute continuity of Wasserstein barycenters on manifolds with a lower Ricci curvature bound

Given a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ with a lower Ricci curvature bound, we consider barycenters in the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_2(M)$ of probability measures on $M$. We refer to them as Wasserstein barycenters, which by definition are probability measures on $M$. The goal of this article is to present a novel approach to proving their absolute continuity. We introduce a new class of displacement functionals exploiting the Hessian equality for Wasserstein barycenters. To provide suitable instances of such functionals, we revisit Souslin space theory, Dunford-Pettis theorem and the de la Vallée Poussin criterion for uniform integrability. Our method shows that if a probability measure $\mathbb{P}$ on $\mathcal{W}_2(M)$ gives mass to absolutely continuous measures on $M$, then its unique barycenter is also absolutely continuous. This generalizes the previous results on compact manifolds by Kim and Pass arXiv:1412.7726 [math.AP] .

Nonlinear elliptic equations on Carnot groups

This article concerns a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending on one real positive parameter and involving a subcritical nonlinearity (for the critical case we refer to G. Molica Bisci and D. Repovš, Yamabe-type equations on Carnot groups, Potential Anal. 46:2 (2017), 369-383; arXiv:1705.10100 [math.AP]). As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. The main approach is based on variational methods.

Geometric formulation of the Cauchy invariants for incompressible Euler flow in flat and curved spaces

Cauchy invariants are now viewed as a powerful tool for investigating the Lagrangian structure of three-dimensional (3D) ideal flow (Frisch & Zheligovsky, Commun. Math. Phys., vol. 326, 2014, pp. 499-505, Podvigina et al., J. Comput. Phys., vol. 306, 2016, pp. 320-342). Looking at such invariants with the modern tools of differential geometry and of geodesic flow on the space SDiff of volume-preserving transformations (Arnold, Ann. Inst. Fourier, vol. 16, 1966, pp. 319-361), all manners of generalisations are here derived. The Cauchy invariants equation and the Cauchy formula, relating the vorticity and the Jacobian of the Lagrangian map, are shown to be two expressions of this Lie-advection invariance, which are duals of each other (specifically, Hodge dual). Actually, this is shown to be an instance of a general result, which holds for flow both in flat (Euclidean) space and in a curved Riemannian space: any Lie-advection invariant p-form which is exact (i.e. is a differential of a (p-1)-form) has an associated Cauchy invariants equation and a Cauchy formula. This constitutes a new fundamental result in linear transport theory, providing a Lagrangian formulation of Lie advection for some classes of differential forms. The result has a broad applicability: examples include the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations and various extensions thereof, discussed by Lingam et al. (Phys. Lett. A, vol. 380, 2016, pp. 2400-2406), and include also the equations of Tao (2016, arXiv:1606.08481 [math.AP]), Euler equations with modified Biot-Savart law, displaying finite-time blow-up. Our main result is also used for new derivations, and several new results, concerning local helicity-type invariants for fluids and MHD flow in flat or curved spaces of arbitrary dimension.

Optimal Semiclassical Regularity of Projection Operators and Strong Weyl Law

Projection operators arise naturally as one-particle density operators associated to Slater determinants in fields such as quantum mechanics and the study of determinantal processes. In the context of the semiclassical approximation of quantum mechanics, projection operators can be seen as the analogue of characteristic functions of subsets of the phase space, which are discontinuous functions. We prove that projection operators indeed converge to characteristic functions of the phase space and that in terms of quantum Sobolev spaces, they exhibit the same maximal regularity as characteristic functions. This can be interpreted as a semiclassical asymptotic on the size of commutators in Schatten norms. Our study answers a question raised in [J. Chong, L. Lafleche, C. Saffirio, arXiv:2103.10946 [math.AP]] about the possibility of having projection operators as initial data. It also gives a strong convergence result in Sobolev spaces for the Weyl law in phase space.

Approximating three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics system forced by space-time white noise

The magnetohydrodynamics system consists of the Navier-Stokes and Maxwell's equations, coupled through multiples of nonlinear terms. Such a system forced by space-time white noise has been studied by physicists for decades, and the rigorous proof of its solution theory has been recently established in Yamazaki (2019, arXiv:1910.04820 [math.AP]) using the theory of paracontrolled distributions and a technique of coupled renormalizations. When an equation is well-posed, and it is approximated by replacing the differentiation operator by reasonable discretization schemes with a parameter, it is widely believed that a solution of the approximating equation should converge to the solution of the original equation as the parameter approaches zero. We prove otherwise in the case of the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics system forced by space-time white noise. Specifically, it is proven that the limit of the solution to the approximating system with an additional 32 drift terms solves the original system. These 32 drift terms depend on the choice of approximations, can be calculated explicitly in the process of renormalizations, and essentially represent a spatial version of It$\hat{\mathrm{o}}$-Stratonovich correction terms. In particular, the proof relies on the technique of coupled renormalizations again, as well as taking advantage of the special structure of the magnetohydrodynamics system on many occasions.

Long Range Scattering and Modified Wave Operators for some Hartree Type Equations II

We study the theory of scattering for a class of Hartree type equations with long range interactions in space dimension n > 2, including Hartree equations with potential V(x) = lambda |x|^{- gamma}. For 0 < gamma < or =1 we prove the existence of modified wave operators with no size restriction on the data and we determine the asymptotic behaviour in time of solutions in the range of the wave operators, thereby extending the results of a previous paper with the same title (math.AP/9807031) which covered the range 1/2 < gamma <1.

A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.

The fractional Hardy inequality with a remainder term

We calculate the regional fractional Laplacian on some power function on an interval. As an application, we prove Hardy inequality with an extra term for the fractional Laplacian on the interval with the optimal constant. As a result, we obtain the fractional Hardy inequality with best constant and an extra lower-order term for general domains, following the method developed by M. Loss and C. Sloane [arXiv:0907.3054v1 [math.AP]]

On generalized Mittag-Leffler-type functions of two variables

We aim to study Mittag-Leffler type functions of two variables ${{D}_{1}}\left( x,y \right),...,{{D}_{5}}\left( x,y \right)$ by analogy with the Appell hypergeometric functions of two variables. Moreover, we targeted functions ${{E}_{1}}\left( x,y \right),$ $...,{{E}_{10}}\left( x,y \right)$ as limiting cases of the functions ${{D}_{1}}\left( x,y \right),$ $...,{{D}_{5}}\left( x,y \right)$ and studied certain properties, as well. Following Horn's method, we determine all possible cases of the convergence region of the function ${{D}_{1}}\left( x,y \right).$ Further, for a generalized hypergeometric function, ${{D}_{1}}\left( x,y \right)$ (two variable Mittag-Leffler-type function) integral representations of the Euler type have been proved. One-dimensional and two-dimensional Laplace transforms of the function are also defined. We have constructed a system of partial differential equations which is linked with the function ${{D}_{1}}\left( x,y \right)$.

Well-posedness and Stability for Interconnection Structures of Port-Hamiltonian Type

We consider networks of infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems $\mathfrak{S}_i$ on one-dimensional spatial domains. These subsystems of port-Hamiltonian type are interconnected via boundary control and observation and are allowed to be of distinct port-Hamiltonian orders $N_i \in \mathbb{N}$. Wellposedness and stability results for port-Hamiltonian systems of fixed order $N \in \mathbb{N}$ are thereby generalised to networks of such. The abstract theory is applied to some particular model examples.

Well-posedness for a system of quadratic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations with radial initial data

In the present paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of the system of quadratic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations. This system was introduced by M. Colin and T. Colin (2004). The first and second authors obtained some well-posedness results in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We improve these results for conditional radial initial data by rewriting the system radial form.

Unconditional finite amplitude stability of a fluid in a mechanically isolated vessel with spatially non-uniform wall temperature

A fluid occupying a mechanically isolated vessel with walls kept at spatially non-uniform temperature is in the long run expected to reach the spatially inhomogeneous steady state. Irrespective of the initial conditions the velocity field is expected to vanish, and the temperature field is expected to be fully determined by the steady heat equation. This simple observation is however difficult to prove using the corresponding governing equations. The main difficulties are the presence of the dissipative heating term in the evolution equation for temperature and the lack of control on the heat fluxes through the boundary. Using thermodynamically based arguments, it is shown that these difficulties in the proof can be overcome, and it is proved that the velocity and temperature perturbations to the steady state actually vanish as the time goes to infinity.

Global Classical Solutions of the Relativistic Vlasov-Darwin System with Small Cauchy Data: the Generalized Variables Approach

We show that a smooth, small enough Cauchy datum launches a unique classical solution of the relativistic Vlasov-Darwin (RVD) system globally in time. A similar result is claimed in Comm. Math. Sci. 6, 749-764 (2008) following the work in Int. Mat. Res. Not. 57191, 1-31 (2006). Our proof does not require estimates derived from the conservation of the total energy, nor those previously given on the transverse component of the electric field. These estimates are crucial in the references cited above. Instead, we exploit the formulation of the RVD system in terms of the generalized space and momentum variables. By doing so, we produce a simple a-priori estimate on the transverse component of the electric field. We widen the functional space required for the Cauchy datum to extend the solution globally in time, and we improve decay estimates given in Comm. Math. Sci. 6, 749-764 (2008) on the electromagnetic field and its space derivatives. Our method extends the constructive proof presented in "Collisionless kinetic equations from astrophysics: The Vlasov-Poisson system. Handbook of Differential Equations: Evolutionary Equations, Vol.3, Elsevier, 2007" to solve the Cauchy problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system with a small initial datum.

Strichartz estimates and moment bounds for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system I. The $2$-D and $2\frac 12$-D cases

Consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system with initial data of unrestricted size. In the two dimensional and the two and a half dimensional cases, Glassey-Schaeffer (1997, 1998, 1998) proved that for regular initial data with compact momentum support this system has unique global in time classical solutions. In this work we do not assume compact momentum support for the initial data and instead require only that the data have polynomial decay in momentum space. In the 2D and the $2\frac 12$D cases, we prove the global existence, uniqueness and regularity for solutions arising from this class of initial data. To this end we use Strichartz estimates and prove that suitable moments of the solution remain bounded. Moreover, we obtain a slight improvement of the temporal growth of the $L^\infty_x$ norms of the electromagnetic fields compared to Glassey-Schaeffer.

Uniform Estimates in Periodic Homogenization of Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations

This article is concerned with uniform $C^{1,α}$ and $C^{1,1}$ estimates in periodic homogenization of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. The analysis is based on the compactness method, which involves linearization of the operator at each approximation step. Due to the nonlinearity of the equations, the linearized operators involve the Hessian of correctors, which appear in the previous step. The involvement of the Hessian of the correctors deteriorates the regularity of the linearized operator, and sometimes even changes its oscillating pattern. These issues are resolved with new approximation techniques, which yield a precise decomposition of the regular part and the irregular part of the homogenization process, along with a uniform control of the Hessian of the correctors in an intermediate level. The approximation techniques are even new in the context of linear equations. Our argument can be applied not only to concave operators, but also to certain class of non-concave operators.

A spinorial energy functional: critical points and gradient flow

On the universal bundle of unit spinors we study a natural energy functional whose critical points, if dim M \geq 3, are precisely the pairs (g, ϕ) consisting of a Ricci-flat Riemannian metric g together with a parallel g-spinor ϕ. We investigate the basic properties of this functional and study its negative gradient flow, the so-called spinor flow. In particular, we prove short-time existence and uniqueness for this flow.
