Geometric Aspects of the Moduli Space of Riemann Surfaces

This is a survey of our recent results on the geometry of moduli spaces and Teichmuller spaces of Riemann surfaces appeared in math.DG/0403068 and math.DG/0409220. We introduce new metrics on the moduli and the Teichmuller spaces of Riemann surfaces with very good properties, study their curvatures and boundary behaviors in great detail. Based on the careful analysis of these new metrics, we have a good understanding of the Kahler-Einstein metric from which we prove that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is stable. Another corolary is a proof of the equivalences of all of the known classical complete metrics to the new metrics, in particular Yau's conjectures in the early 80s on the equivalences of the Kahler-Einstein metric to the Teichmuller and the Bergman metric.

Double solid twistor spaces: the case of arbitrary signature

In a recent paper (math.DG/0701278) we constructed a series of new Moishezon twistor spaces which is a kind of variant of the famous LeBrun twistor spaces. In this paper we explicitly give projective models of another series of Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>2, which can be regarded as a generalization of the twistor spaces of a 'double solid type' on 3CP^2 studied by Kreussler, Kurke, Poon and the author. Similarly to the twistor spaces of 'double solid type' on 3CP^2, projective models of present twistor spaces have a natural structure of double covering of a CP^2-bundle over CP^1. We explicitly give a defining polynomial of the branch divisor of the double covering whose restriction to fibers are degree four. If n>3 these are new twistor spaces, to the best of the author's knowledge. We also compute the dimension of the moduli space of these twistor spaces. Differently from math.DG/0701278, the present investigation is based on analysis of pluri-(half-)anticanonical systems of the twistor spaces.

K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution and compact irreducible G_2-manifolds

We consider the connected-sum method of constructing compact Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy G_2 developed in math.DG/0012189. The method requires pairs of projective complex threefolds endowed with anticanonical K3 divisors, the latter `matching' via a certain non-holomorphic map. Suitable examples of threefolds were previously obtained in math.DG/0012189 by blowing up curves in Fano threefolds. In this paper, we give further suitable algebraic threefolds using theory of K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution due to Nikulin. These threefolds are not obtainable from Fano threefolds, as above, and admit matching pairs leading to topologically new examples of compact irreducible G_2-manifolds. `Geography' of the values of Betti numbers b^2,b^3 for the new (and previously known) examples of compact irreducible G_2 manifolds is also discussed.

2-Ruled Calibrated 4-folds in R^7 and R^8

In this paper we introduce the area of 2-ruled 4-folds in R^n (n=7 or 8), that is, submanifolds M of R^n that admit a fibration over some 2-fold Sigma such that each fibre is an affine 2-plane in R^n. This is motivated by the paper math.DG/0012060 by Joyce on ruled special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3 and the work of the author in math.DG/0401123 on ruled associative 3-folds in R^7. We say that a 2-ruled 4-fold M is r-framed if we are given an oriented basis for each fibre in a smooth manner, and in such circumstances we may write M in terms of orthogonal smooth maps phi_1,phi_2:Sigma-->S^(n-1) and a smooth map psi:Sigma-->R^n. We focus on 2-ruled Cayley 4-folds since coassociative and special Lagrangian 4-folds can be considered as special cases. The main result is on non-planar, r-framed, 2-ruled Cayley 4-folds in R^8, which characterises the Cayley condition in terms of a coupled system of nonlinear, first-order, partial differential equations that phi_1 and phi_2 satisfy, and another such equation on psi which is linear in psi. We deduce that, for a fixed non-planar, r-framed, 2-ruled Cayley cone M_0, the space of r-framed 2-ruled Cayley 4-folds M which have asymptotic cone M_0 has the structure of a vector space. We give a means of constructing 2-ruled Cayley 4-folds M starting from a 2-ruled Cayley cone M_0, satisfying a certain condition, using holomorphic vector fields such that M_0 is the asymptotic cone of M. We use this to construct explicit examples of U(1)-invariant 2-ruled Cayley 4-folds asymptotic to a U(1)^3-invariant 2-ruled Cayley cone. Examples are also given based on ruled calibrated 3-folds in C^3 and R^7 and complex cones in C^4.

Iterated Differential Forms IV: C-Spectral Sequence

For the multiple differential algebra of iterated differential forms (see math.DG/0605113 and math.DG/0609287) on a diffiety (O,C) an analogue of C-spectral sequence is constructed. The first term of it is naturally interpreted as the algebra of secondary iterated differential forms on (O,C). This allows to develop secondary tensor analysis on generic diffieties, some simplest elements of which are sketched here. The presented here general theory will be specified to infinite jet spaces and infinitely prolonged PDEs in subsequent notes.

The first coefficients of the asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel of the spin^c Dirac operator

We establish the existence of the asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel associated to the spin-c Dirac operators acting on high tensor powers of line bundles with non-degenerate mixed curvature (negative and positive eigenvalues) by extending the paper " On the asymptotic expansion of Bergman kernel " (math.DG/0404494) of Dai-Liu-Ma. We compute the second coefficient b_1 in the asymptotic expansion using the method of our paper "Generalized Bergman kernels on symplectic manifolds" (math.DG/0411559).

PU(2) monopoles. II: Top-level Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces and Witten's conjecture in low degrees

In this article we complete the proof---for a broad class of four-manifolds---of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 4--7 of an earlier version, while a revision of sections 1--3 of that earlier version now appear in a separate companion article (math.DG/0007190). Here, we use our computations of Chern classes for the virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten strata from the companion article (math.DG/0007190), a comparison of all the orientations, and the PU(2) monopole cobordism to compute pairings with the links of level-zero Seiberg-Witten moduli subspaces of the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles. These calculations then allow us to compute low-degree Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants and provide a partial verification of Witten's conjecture.

The equivariant index theorem for transversally elliptic operators and the basic index theorem for Riemannian foliations

In this expository paper, we explain a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications is an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years. This paper summarizes the work in the papers arXiv:1005.3845 [math.DG] and arXiv:1008.1757 [math.DG].

Conjectures on Bridgeland stability for Fukaya categories of Calabi-Yau manifolds, special Lagrangians, and Lagrangian mean curvature flow

Let $M$ be a Calabi-Yau $m$-fold, and consider compact, graded Lagrangians $L$ in $M$. Thomas and Yau math.DG/0104196, math.DG/0104197 conjectured that there should be a notion of "stability" for such $L$, and that if $L$ is stable then Lagrangian mean curvature flow $\{L^t:t\in[0,\infty)\}$ with $L^0=L$ should exist for all time, and $L^\infty=\lim_{t\to\infty}L^t$ should be the unique special Lagrangian in the Hamiltonian isotopy class of $L$. This paper is an attempt to update the Thomas-Yau conjectures, and discuss related issues. It is a folklore conjecture that there exists a Bridgeland stability condition $(Z,\mathcal P)$ on the derived Fukaya category $D^b\mathcal F(M)$ of $M$, such that an isomorphism class in $D^b\mathcal F(M)$ is $(Z,\mathcal P)$-semistable if (and possibly only if) it contains a special Lagrangian, which must then be unique. We conjecture that if $(L,E,b)$ is an object in an enlarged version of $D^b\mathcal F(M)$, where $L$ is a compact, graded Lagrangian in $M$ (possibly immersed, or with "stable singularities"), $E\to M$ a rank one local system, and $b$ a bounding cochain for $(L,E)$ in Lagrangian Floer cohomology, then there is a unique family $\{(L^t,E^t,b^t):t\in[0,\infty)\}$ such that $(L^0,E^0,b^0)=(L,E,b)$, and $(L^t,E^t,b^t)\cong(L,E,b)$ in $D^b\mathcal F(M)$ for all $t$, and $\{L^t:t\in[0,\infty)\}$ satisfies Lagrangian MCF with surgeries at singular times $T_1,T_2,\dots,$ and in graded Lagrangian integral currents we have $\lim_{t\to\infty}L^t=L_1+\cdots+L_n$, where $L_j$ is a special Lagrangian integral current of phase $e^{iπϕ_j}$ for $ϕ_1>\cdots>ϕ_n$, and $(L_1,ϕ_1),\ldots,(L_n,ϕ_n)$ correspond to the decomposition of $(L,E,b)$ into $(Z,\mathcal P)$-semistable objects. We also give detailed conjectures on the nature of the singularities of Lagrangian MCF that occur at the finite singular times $T_1,T_2,\ldots.$

Sobolev--type metrics in the space of curves

We define a manifold $M$ where objects $c\in M$ are curves, which we parameterize as $c:S^1\to R^n$ ($n\ge 2$, $S^1$ is the circle). Given a curve $c$, we define the tangent space $T_cM$ of $M$ at $c$ including in it all deformations $h:S^1\to R^n$ of $c$. In this paper we study geometries on the manifold of curves, provided by Sobolev--type metrics $H^j$. We study $H^j$ type metrics for the cases $j=1,2$; we prove estimates, and characterize the completion of the space of smooth curves. As a bonus, we prove that the Fréchet distance of curves (see arXiv:math.DG/0312384) coincides with the distance induced by the ``Finsler $L^\infinity$ metric'' defined in \S2.2 in arXiv:math.DG/0412454.

Differential systems associated with tableaux over Lie algebras

We give an account of the construction of exterior differential systems based on the notion of tableaux over Lie algebras as developed in [Comm. Anal. Geom 14 (2006), 475-496; math.DG/0412169]. The definition of a tableau over a Lie algebra is revisited and extended in the light of the formalism of the Spencer cohomology; the question of involutiveness for the associated systems and their prolongations is addressed; examples are discussed.

The bisymplectomorphism group of a bounded symmetric domain

An Hermitian bounded symmetric domain in a complex vector space, given in its circled realization, is endowed with two natural symplectic forms: the flat form and the hyperbolic form. In a similar way, the ambient vector space is also endowed with two natural symplectic forms: the Fubini-Study form and the flat form. It has been shown in arXiv:math.DG/0603141 that there exists a diffeomorphism from the domain to the ambient vector space which puts in correspondence the above pair of forms. This phenomenon is called symplectic duality for Hermitian non compact symmetric spaces. In this article, we first give a different and simpler proof of this fact. Then, in order to measure the non uniqueness of this symplectic duality map, we determine the group of bisymplectomorphisms of a bounded symmetric domain, that is, the group of diffeomorphisms which preserve simultaneously the hyperbolic and the flat symplectic form. This group is the direct product of the compact Lie group of linear automorphisms with an infinite-dimensional Abelian group. This result appears as a kind of Schwarz lemma.

Deformations of Compact Coassociative 4-folds with Boundary

Coassociative 4-folds are a particular class of 4-dimensional submanifolds which are defined in a 7-dimensional manifold M with a G_2 structure given by a `positive' differential 3-form, sometimes called G_2-form. Assuming that a G_2-form on M is closed, we study deformations of a compact coassociative submanifold N with boundary contained in fixed, codimension 1 submanifold S of M with a compatible Hermitian symplectic structure. We show that `small' coassociative deformations of N with special Lagrangian boundary in S are unobstructed and form a smooth moduli space of finite dimension not greater than the first Betti number of the boundary of N. It is also shown that N is `stable' under small deformations of the closed G_2-form on the ambient 7-manifold M. The results can be compared to those for special Lagrangian submanifolds of Calabi--Yau manifolds proved by A.Butscher in math.DG/0110052.

Equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients

These notes form the next episode in a series of articles dedicated to a detailed proof of a cohomological index formula for transversally elliptic pseudo-differential operators and applications. The first two chapters are already available as math.DG/0702575 and arXiv:0711.3898. In this episode, we construct the relative equivariant Chern character of a morphism of vector bundles, localized by a one form, and we prove a multiplicativity property of this generalized Chern character

A new series of compact minitwistor spaces and Moishezon twistor spaces over them

In recent papers math.DG/0701278 and arXiv:0705.0060, we gave explicit description of some new Moishezon twistor spaces. In this paper, developing the method in the papers much further, we explicitly give projective models of a number of new Moishezon twistor spaces, as conic bundles over some rational surfaces (called minitwistor spaces). These include the twistor spaces studied in the papers as very special cases. Our source of the result is a series of self-dual metrics with torus action constructed by D. Joyce. Actually, for arbitrary Joyce metrics and U(1)-subgroups of the torus which fixes a torus-invariant 2-sphere, we first determine the associated minitwistor spaces in explicit forms. Next by analyzing the meromorphic maps from the twistor spaces to the minitwistor spaces, we realize projective models of the twistor spaces of all Joyce metrics, as conic bundles over the minitwistor spaces. Then we prove that for any one of these minitwistor spaces, there exist Moishezon twistor spaces with only C*-action whose quotient space is the given minitwistor space. This result generates numerous Moishezon twistor spaces which cannot be found in the literature (including the author's papers), in quite explicit form.

The horizon of the BTZ black hole

This paper is a sequel of "Solvable symmetric black hole in anti de Sitter spaces" [arXiv:math.DG/0510442]. In the latter, we described the BTZ black hole in every dimension by defining the singularity as the closed orbits of the Iwasawa subgroup of SO(2,n). In this article, we study the horizon of the black hole and we show that it is expressed as lateral classes of one point of the space. The computation is given in the four-dimensional case, but it makes no doubt that it can be generalized to any dimension. The main idea is to define an "inclusion map" from AdS_3 into AdS_4 and to show that all the relevant structure pass trough the inclusion. We prove, for example, that the inclusion of the three dimensional horizon into AdS_4 belongs to the four dimensional horizon. Then we deduce the expression of the horizon in AdS_4.
