Fluctuations in Statistical Models

The multiplicity fluctuations of hadrons are studied within the statistical hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. The role of quantum statistics and resonance decay effects are discussed. The microscopic correlator method is used to enforce conservation of three charges -- baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness -- in the canonical ensemble. In addition, in the micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method is used to account for resonance decays. The multiplicity distributions and the scaled variances for negatively and positively charged hadrons are calculated for the sets of thermodynamical parameters along the chemical freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies. Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with the preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than the Poisson ones and clearly favor expectations for the micro-canonical ensemble. Thus, this is a first observation of the recently predicted suppression of the multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic gases in the thermodynamical limit due to conservation laws.

Charmed signatures for phase transitions in heavy-ion collisions

The interplay of charmonium production and suppression in In+In and Pb+Pb reactions at 158 AGeV and in Au+Au reactions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV is investigated with the HSD transport approach within the `hadronic comover model' and the `QGP melting scenario'. The results for the J/Psi suppression and the Psi' to J/Psi ratio are compared to the recent data of the NA50, NA60, and PHENIX Collaborations. We find that, at 158 AGeV, the comover absorption model performs better than the scenario of abrupt threshold melting. However, neither interaction with hadrons alone nor simple color screening satisfactory describes the data at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. A deconfined phase is clearly reached at RHIC, but a theory having the relevant degrees of freedom in this regime (strongly interacting quarks/gluons) is needed to study its transport properties.

The Renormalized Tensor Interaction in a Nucleus

We show several examples were the tensor interaction of the lowest order G matrix in a nucleus is too strong. The examples include the quadrupole moment of $^{6}$Li, the isosplitting of the lowest 0$^{-}$ states in $^{16}$O, the near vanishing Gamow-Teller matrix element in the weak decay of the J=0 T=1 state of $^{14}$O to the J=1 T=0 ground state of $^{14}$N, and the magnitude of the deformation of $^{12}$C. It would appear that we could get better results by decreasing the tensor interaction strength by about a factor of two. We then examine the simple estimates of Gerry Brown concerning second order tensor effects. We note that for the triplet even channel the combination of first and second order tensor does indeed yield an effective weaker tensor interaction and helps to get better agreement with experiment.

Alpha-alpha interaction with chiral two pion exchange and 8Be lifetime

Assuming that alpha particles are described by a scalar-isoscalar chiral invariant heavy field it is shown how chiral symmetry determines the alpha-alpha interaction at long distances unambiguously from dimensional power counting of an effective chiral Lagrangean. The leading strong contribution is given by a two pion exchange potential which turns out to be attractive and singular at the origin, hence demanding renormalization. When 8Be is treated as a resonance state a model independent correlation between the Q-factor and lifetime 1/Gamma for the decay into two alpha particles arises. For parameters compatible with potential model analyses of low energy pi-alpha scattering it is found a Breit-Wigner width Gamma = 4.3(3) eV very close to the experimental value, Gamma= 5.57 (25)eV.

Chiral Analysis of the Generalized Form Factors of the Nucleon

We apply the methods of Chiral Perturbation Theory to the analysis of the first moments of the Generalized Parton Distributions in a Nucleon, usually known as generalized form factors. These quantities are currently also under investigation in Lattice QCD analyses of baryon structure, providing simulation results at large quark masses to be extrapolated to the "real world" via Chiral Effective Field Theory. We have performed a leading-one-loop calculation in the covariant framework of Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory (BChPT), predicting both the momentum and the quark-mass dependence for all the vector and axial (generalized) form factors. In particular we discuss the results for the limit of vanishing four-momentum transfer where the GPD-moments reduce to the well known moments of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). We fit our results to available lattice QCD data, extrapolating down to the physical point. We conclude by presenting outstanding results from a combined fit to different GPDs-moments.

Transport and spectral functions in high-temperature QCD

The current status of transport coefficients in relativistic field theories at high temperature is reviewed. I contrast weak coupling results obtained using kinetic theory/diagrammatic techniques with strong coupling results obtained using gauge/gravity duality, and describe the recent developments in extracting transport coefficients and spectral functions from lattice QCD simulations. The fate of quarkonium at high temperature as seen from the lattice is briefly mentioned as well.

New Nuclear And Subnuclear Exotic Decays

In this paper new nuclear and subnuclear exotic decays are investigated. Some theoretical problems of the pionic radioactivity, such as fission-like models, applicable to all kind of exotic nuclear and subnuclear decays are presented. The induced nuclear and subnuclear decays are discussed. Moreover, using the recent results on the spontaneous fission half lives T of the heavy nuclei with Z new predictions on the pionic yields in the region of superheavy elements are presented.

Screening masses of mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD

We present results for screening masses of light and strange mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD using improved (p4fat3) staggered fermions on 6x24^3 lattices. We have studied the screening masses of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons along the line of constant physics, determined by a pion mass ~220 MeV and a kaon mass ~500 MeV. In order to investigate the cut-off and volume dependencies we have also performed studies of the meson screening correlators in the non-interacting theory using the p4 and the standard staggered discretizations.

QCD symmetries in excited hadrons

Recent developments for chiral and $U(1)_A$ restorations in excited hadrons are reviewed. We emphasize predictions of the chiral symmetry restoration scenario for axial charges and couplings to Goldstone bosons. Using very general chiral symmetry arguments it is shown that strict chiral restoration in a given excited nucleon forbids its decay into the $N π$ channel. We confront this prediction with the $N^*Nπ$ coupling constants extracted from the decay widths and observe a 100 % correlation of these data with the spectroscopic parity doublet patterns. These results suggest that the lowest approximate chiral parity doublet is the $N(1440) - N(1535)$ pair. In the meson sector we discuss predictions of the chiral symmetry restoration for still missing states and a signature of the higher symmetry observed in new $\bar p p$ data. We conclude with the exactly solvable chirally symmetric and confining model that can be considered as a generalization of the 1+1 dimensional 't Hooft model to 4 dimensions. Complete spectra of $\bar q q$ mesons demonstrate a fast chiral restoration with increasing $J$ and a slow one with increasing $n$.

Illuminating the 1/x moment of parton distribution functions

The Weisberger relation, an exact statement of the parton model, elegantly relates a high-energy physics observable, the 1/x moment of parton distribution functions, to a nonperturbative low-energy observable: the dependence of the nucleon mass on the value of the quark mass or its corresponding quark condensate. We show that contemporary fits to nucleon structure functions fail to determine this 1/x moment; however, deeply virtual Compton scattering can be described in terms of a novel F_{1/x}(t) form factor which illuminates this physics. An analysis of exclusive photon-induced processes in terms of the parton-nucleon scattering amplitude with Regge behavior reveals a failure of the high Q^2 factorization of exclusive processes at low t in terms of the Generalized Parton-Distribution Functions which has been widely believed to hold in the past. We emphasize the need for more data for the DVCS process at large t in future or upgraded facilities.

Baryon masses with dynamical twisted mass fermions

We present results on the mass of the nucleon and the $Δ$ using two dynamical degenerate twisted mass quarks. The evaluation is performed at four quark masses corresponding to a pion mass in the range of 690-300 MeV on lattices of size 2.1 fm and 2.7 fm. We check for cutoff effects by evaluating these baryon masses on lattices of spatial size 2.1 fm with lattice spacings $a(β=3.9)=0.0855(6)$ fm and $a(β=4.05)=0.0666(6)$ fm, determined from the pion sector and find them to be within our statistical errors. Lattice results are extrapolated to the physical limit using continuum chiral perturbation theory. The nucleon mass at the physical point provides a determination of the lattice spacing. Using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory at ${\cal O}(p^3)$ we find $a(β=3.9)=0.0879(12)$ fm, with a systematic error due to the chiral extrapolation estimated to be about the same as the statistical error. This value of the lattice spacing is in good agreement with the value determined from the pion sector. We check for isospin breaking in the $Δ$-system. We find that $Δ^{++,-}$ and $Δ^{+,0}$ are almost degenerate pointing to small flavor violating effects.

Meson mass spectrum at finite temperature and density in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD for color SU(3)

We investigate the meson mass spectrum in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one species of staggered fermion for the SU(N_c) color gauge group, including N_c=3. We analytically derive meson masses as functions of temperature and chemical potential via chiral condensates. We show that meson masses quickly decrease to zero when the chemical potential or the temperature approaches to the critical value.

Statistical hadronization of charm quarks in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

We discuss the production of charmonium and open charm in nuclear collisions at SPS/FAIR energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. The increasing importance at lower energies of Lambda_c production is discussed and provides a challenge for future experiments. We also show that possible modifications of charmed hadrons in the hot hadronic medium do not lead to measurable changes in the cross sections for D-meson production. A possible influence of medium effects can be seen, however, in yields of charmonium. These effects are visible at all energies and results will be presented for the energy range between charm threshold and RHIC energy.

Electromagnetic form factors of the Delta baryon

We develop a methodology that enables us to extract accurately the electromagnetic Delta form factors and their momentum dependence. We test our approach in the quenched approximation as a preparation for a study using dynamical fermions. Our calculation of the four form factors covers pion masses between about 410 MeV and 560 MeV on lattices with a size of 2.9 fm and a lattice spacing 0.09 fm. From the form factors we are able to obtain estimates of the magnetic moment and the charge radius of the Delta, which we compare to existing experimental and theoretical results. Our non-zero result for the electric quadrupole form factor signals a deformation of the Delta, pointing to an oblate charge distribution.

Precision extraction of a_nn from pi- d --> n n gamma using chiral perturbation theory

The neutron-neutron scattering length a_nn provides a sensitive probe of charge-symmetry breaking in the strong interaction. Here we summarize our recent efforts to use chiral perturbation theory in order to systematically relate a_nn to the shape of the neutron spectrum in the reaction pi- d --> n n gamma. In particular we show how the chiral symmetry of QCD relates this process to low-energy electroweak reactions such as p p --> d e+ nu_e. This allows us to reduce the uncertainty in the extracted a_nn (mainly due to short-distance physics in the two-nucleon system) by a factor of more than three, to <0.05 fm. We also report first results on the impact that two-nucleon mechanisms of chiral order P^4 have on the pi- d --> n n gamma neutron spectrum.

Exotic hadrons and SU(3) chiral dynamics

We explore a possibility to generate exotic hadrons dynamically in the scattering of hadrons. The s-wave scattering amplitude of an arbitrary hadron with the Nambu-Goldstone boson is constructed so as to satisfy the unitarity condition and the chiral low energy theorem. We find that the chiral interaction for the exotic channels is in most cases repulsive, and that the strength of the possible attractive interaction is uniquely determined. We show that the attractive interaction in exotic channels is not strong enough to generate a bound state, while the interaction in nonexotic channel generate bound states which are considered to be the origin of some resonances observed in nature.
