The IceCube Cosmological Connection: Status and prospects of the polar neutrino observatory

We report on the current construction status of the IceCube high energy neutrino observatory and possible future construction plans. With the completion of the fourth construction season in Feb. 2008, the observatory is now instrumenting half a cubic kilometer of ice, greatly increasing the horizon for high energy neutrino detection. We briefly describe physics topics related to cosmology, such as indirect searches for supersymmetric cold dark matter, for slow and relativistic magnetic monopoles, GZK neutrinos and violation of Lorentz invariance or Equivalence Principle. It is anticipated that upon completion the new detector will vastly increase the sensitivity and extend the reach of AMANDA to higher energies.

Detecting the B-mode Polarisation of the CMB with Clover

We describe the objectives, design and predicted performance of Clover, which is a ground-based experiment to measure the faint ``B-mode'' polarisation pattern in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). To achieve this goal, clover will make polarimetric observations of approximately 1000 deg^2 of the sky in spectral bands centred on 97, 150 and 225 GHz. The observations will be made with a two-mirror compact range antenna fed by profiled corrugated horns. The telescope beam sizes for each band are 7.5, 5.5 and 5.5 arcmin, respectively. The polarisation of the sky will be measured with a rotating half-wave plate and stationary analyser, which will be an orthomode transducer. The sky coverage combined with the angular resolution will allow us to measure the angular power spectra between 20 < l < 1000. Each frequency band will employ 192 single polarisation, photon noise limited TES bolometers cooled to 100 mK. The background-limited sensitivity of these detector arrays will allow us to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio to 0.026 at 3sigma, assuming any polarised foreground signals can be subtracted with minimal degradation to the 150 GHz sensitivity. Systematic errors will be mitigated by modulating the polarisation of the sky signals with the rotating half-wave plate, fast azimuth scans and periodic telescope rotations about its boresight. The three spectral bands will be divided into two separate but nearly identical instruments - one for 97 GHz and another for 150 and 225 GHz. The two instruments will be sited on identical three-axis mounts in the Atacama Desert in Chile near Pampa la Bola. Observations are expected to begin in late 2009.

Karhunen-Loeve Basis Functions of Kolmogorov Turbulence in the Sphere

The statistically independent Karhunen-Loeve modes of refractive indices with isotropic Kolmogorov spectrum of the covariance are calculated in a sphere of given radius, rendered as series of 3D Zernike functions. Many of the symmetry arguments of the associated 2D problem for the circular input pupil remain valid. The technique of efficient diagonalization of the eigenvalue problem in wavenumber space is founded on the Fourier representation of the 3D Zernike basis.

Reinterpreting MOND: coupling of Einsteinian gravity and spin of cosmic neutrinos?

Several rare coincidences of scales in standard particle physics are needed to explain (i) why neutrinos have mass, (ii) why the negative pressure of the cosmological dark energy (DE) coincides with the positive pressure of random motion of dark matter (DM) in bright galaxies, (iii) why Dark Matter in galaxies seems to have a finite phase-space density, and to follow the Tully-Fisher-Milgrom relation of galaxy rotation curves. The old idea of self-interacting DM is given a new spin: we propose that the neutrino spin-gravity coupling could lead to a cosmic neutrino dark fluid with a an internal energy density varying as function of the local acceleration of the neutrino fluid with respect the CMB background. We link the Tully-Fisher-Milgrom relation of spiral galaxies (or MOND) with the relativistic pressure of the neutrino dark fluid without modifying Einsteinian gravity.

On The Dependence Structure of Wavelet Coefficients for Spherical Random Fields

We consider the correlation structure of the random coefficients for a wide class of wavelet systems on the sphere (Mexican needlets) which were recently introduced in the literature by Geller and Mayeli (2007). We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for these coefficients to be asymptotic uncorrelated in the real and in the frequency domain. Here, the asymptotic theory is developed in the high resolution sense. Statistical applications are also discussed, in particular with reference to the analysis of cosmological data.

Need for context-aware computing in astrophysics

The example of disk galaxy rotation curves is given for inferring dark matter from redundant computational procedure because proper care of astrophysical and computational context was not taken. At least three attempts that take the context into account have not found adequate voice because of haste in wrongly concluding existence of dark matter on the part of even experts. This firmly entrenched view, prevalent for about 3/4ths of a century, has now become difficult to correct. The right context must be borne in mind at every step to avoid such a situation. Perhaps other examples exist. Keywords: dark matter; disk galaxy; rotation curve; context-awareness. Topics: Algorithms; Applications.

Primordial matter density contrast and the size of the very early universe in the Quantum Big Bang theory of the cosmological constant

We calculate the amount of primordial matter density contrast and the size of the very early universe in the recent Quantum Big Bang theory [arXiv:0705.4549 [gr-qc](2007)] of the cosmological constant. We obtain $(δρ/ρ)_M = 1.75 \times 10^{-5}$, {\it without} the introduction of an adjustable free parameter. Harrison-Zel'dovich $k$-dependence with $A = 64/9π^2 = 0.72$ and $n = 1$ in $|δ_k|^2 = Ak^n$ arises inherently. The size of the universe with which it enters the classical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) phase comes out to be 0.2 cm. We conclude that the hypothesis of classical inflation at an early stage of cosmic evolution is {\bf not} needed.

LOFAR Transients and the Radio Sky Monitor

The study of transient and variable low-frequency radio sources is a key goal for LOFAR, with an extremely broad science case ranging from relativistic jets sources to pulsars, exoplanets, radio bursts at cosmological distances, the identification of gravitational wave sources and even SETI. In this paper we will very briefly summarize the science of the LOFAR Transients key science project, will outline the capabilities of LOFAR for transient studies, and introduce the LOFAR Radio Sky Monitor, a proposed mode in which LOFAR regularly scans 2 pi radians of sky.

Eternal Inflation: Prohibited by Quantum Gravity?

We investigate how eternal inflation is affected by quantum gravity effects. We consider general features of quantum gravity, such as renormalizability, complementarity, minimal length, definition of observables, and weak gravity conjecture. We also consider phenomenological models such as ghost inflation, non-commutative inflation, brane inflation, k-inflation and resonant tunneling. We find that all these features and models do not support eternal inflation. These evidences show hints that eternal inflation is prohibited by quantum gravity.

Broad-line region size and black hole mass in high-z AGN

In this contribution we briefly review the reverberation mapping technique and its results for low and intermidiate luminosity AGNs. Then we present a monitoring campaign of high-luminosity high-redshift quasars which will extend these results by two orders of magnitude, probing the broad-line region size and black hole (BH) mass of luminous AGN at redshift ~2-3.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX): Description and Early Pilot Survey Results

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will outfit the 10 m HET with a new wide field and an array of 150 integral-field spectrographs to survey a 420 sq. deg. area in the north Galactic cap. Each fiber-coupled unit spectrograph will cover 350-550 nm, simultaneously. This instrument, called VIRUS, will produce ~34,000 spectra per exposure, and will open up the emission-line universe to large surveys for the first time. The survey will detect 0.8 million Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies with 1.9<z<3.5 and more than a million [OII] emitting galaxies with z<0.5. The 3-D map of LAE galaxies in 9 cubic Gpc volume will be used to measure the expansion history at this early epoch using baryonic acoustic oscillations and the shape of the power spectrum. The aim of HETDEX is to provide a direct detection of dark energy at z~3. The measurement will constrain the evolution of dark energy and will also provide 0.1%-level accuracy on the curvature of the Universe, ten times better than current. The prototype of the VIRUS unit spectrograph (VIRUS-P) is a powerful instrument in its own right. Used on the McDonald 2.7 m, it covers the largest area of any integral field spectrograph, and reaches wavelengths down to 340 nm. VIRUS-P is being used for a pilot survey to better measure the properties of LAE galaxies in support of HETDEX. We report initial results from this survey.

Spacetime foam

Spacetime foam is analyzed within the simplistic model of a set of scalar fields on a flat background. We suggest the formula for the path integral which allows to account for the all possible topologies of spacetime. We show that the proper path integral defines a cutoff for the field theory. The form of the cutoff is fixed by the field theory itself and has no free additional parameters. New features of the Feynman diagram technic are outlined and possible applications in quantum gravity are discussed.

Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph Working Without Lyot Stop

In the context of high contrast imaging, we propose to evaluate the performance of the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph (APLC) working without Lyot Stop, namely Stop-less Lyot Coronagraph (SLLC). This coronagraph is a combination of an entrance pupil apodizer and an opaque mask in the following focal plane. However, contrary to APLC, SLLC is amputated by the traditional pupil stop. Our goal is to stress the interest of using this coronagraphic solution, in particular for instruments for which the introduction of a stellar coronagraph with Lyot stop is made impossible. We estimate the intensity attenuation achieved with SLLC and carry out our study with a focus on the case of Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). In a first step, numerical simulations are made assuming the absence of any aberration, thereafter SLLC performance is evaluated considering AO corrected wavefronts in our approach for ground-based instruments. SLLC performance proves to be equivalent to that obtained with APLC in presence of AO compensated atmospheric turbulence images, which Strehl ratio is S=0.552 at the wavelength lambda=1.57 mu m. This coronagraph allows to remove the peak intensity of a star image and therefore, avoid detector saturation. Moreover, it helps increasing the image dynamic range. A mean contrast gain in stellar magnitudes Delta m=0.23 is obtained with SLLC whereas APLC reaches a value Delta m=0.38.

Relativistic mean-field theory applied to the study of neutron star properties

Nuclear physics can be applied in various ways to the study of neutron stars. This thesis reports on one such application, where the relativistic mean-field approximation has been employed to calculate the equations of state of matter in the neutron star interior. In particular the equations of state of nuclear and neutron star matter of the NL3, PK1 and FSUGold parameter sets were derived. A survey of available literature on neutron stars is presented and we use the derived equations of state to reproduce the properties of saturated nuclear matter as well as the mass-radius relationship of a static, spherical symmetric neutron star. Results are compared to published values of the properties of saturated nuclear matter and to available observational data of the mass-radius relationship of neutron stars.

Microlensing variability in the gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 = the Einstein Cross

We present the results of the first long-term (2.2 years) spectroscopic monitoring of a gravitationally lensed quasar, namely the Einstein Cross Q2237+0305. We spatially deconvolve deep VLT/FORS1 spectra to accurately separate the spectrum of the lensing galaxy from the spectra of the quasar images. Accurate cross-calibration of the observations at 31 epochs from October 2004 to December 2006 is carried out using foreground stars observed simultaneously with the quasar. The quasar spectra are further decomposed into a continuum component and several broad emission lines. We find prominent microlensing events in the quasar images A and B, while images C and D are almost quiescent on a timescale of a few months. The strongest variations are observed in the continuum, and their amplitude is larger in the blue than in the red, consistent with microlensing of an accretion disk. Variations in the intensity and profile of the broad emission lines are also reported, most prominently in the wings of the CIII] and in the center of the CIV emission lines. During a strong microlensing episode observed in quasar image A, the broad component of the CIII] is more magnified than the narrow component. In addition, the emission lines with higher ionization potentials are more magnified than the lines with lower ionization potentials, consistent with the stratification of the broad line region (BLR) infered from reverberation mapping observations.

Newtonian mechanics & gravity fully model disk galaxy rotation curves without dark matter

EGRET gamma-ray archival data used with GALPROP software show two ringlike structures in Milky Way Plane which roughly tally with distribution of stars ([1] & references therein). To understand fully the implications of this and similar results on detailed structure and rotation curve of especially Milky Way Disk as well as rotation curves of other galaxies as derived from spatially resolved spectroscopic data-cubes, a re-examination of the basis of the connection between mass density and rotation curve is warranted. Kenneth F. Nicholson's approach [2], which uses only Newtonian dynamics & gravity, is presented.

Dark Entropy

We examine the consequences of a universe with a non-constant cosmological term in Einstein's equations and find that the Bianchi identities reduce to the first law of thermodynamics when cosmological term is identified as being proportional to the entropy density of the universe. This means that gravitating dark energy can be viewed as entropy, but more, the holographic principle along with the known expansion of the universe indicates that the entropy of the universe is growing with time and this leads to a cosmic repulsion that also grows with time. Direct implications of this result are calculated and shown to be in good accord with recent observational data.
