Symbolic Dynamics and Periodic Orbits for the Cardioid Billiard

The periodic orbits of the strongly chaotic cardioid billiard are studied by introducing a binary symbolic dynamics. The corresponding partition is mapped to a topological well-ordered symbol plane. In the symbol plane the pruning front is obtained from orbits running either into or through the cusp. We show that all periodic orbits correspond to maxima of the Lagrangian and give a complete list up to code length 15. The symmetry reduction is done on the level of the symbol sequences and the periodic orbits are classified using symmetry lines. We show that there exists an infinite number of families of periodic orbits accumulating in length and that all other families of geometrically short periodic orbits eventually get pruned. All these orbits are related to finite orbits starting and ending in the cusp. We obtain an analytical estimate of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and find good agreement with the numerically calculated value and the one obtained by averaging periodic orbits. Furthermore the statistical properties of periodic orbits are investigated.

On the Convergence to Ergodic Behaviour of Quantum Wave Functions

We study the decrease of fluctuations of diagonal matrix elements of observables and of Husimi densities of quantum mechanical wave functions around their mean value upon approaching the semi-classical regime ($\hbar \rightarrow 0$). The model studied is a spin (SU(2)) one in a classically strongly chaotic regime. We show that the fluctuations are Gaussian distributed, with a width $σ^2$ decreasing as the square root of Planck's constant. This is consistent with Random Matrix Theory (RMT) predictions, and previous studies on these fluctuations. We further study the width of the probability distribution of $\hbar$-dependent fluctuations and compare it to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of RMT.

Coherent States Measurement Entropy

Coherent states (CS) quantum entropy can be split into two components. The dynamical entropy is linked with the dynamical properties of a quantum system. The measurement entropy, which tends to zero in the semiclassical limit, describes the unpredictability induced by the process of a quantum approximate measurement. We study the CS--measurement entropy for spin coherent states defined on the sphere discussing different methods dealing with the time limit $n \to \infty$. In particular we propose an effective technique of computing the entropy by iterated function systems. The dependence of CS--measurement entropy on the character of the partition of the phase space is analysed.

Time-reversible Dynamical Systems for Turbulence

Dynamical Ensemble Equivalence between hydrodynamic dissipative equations and suitable time-reversible dynamical systems has been investigated in a class of dynamical systems for turbulence. The reversible dynamics is obtained from the original dissipative equations by imposing a global constraint. We find that, by increasing the input energy, the system changes from an equilibrium state to a non-equilibrium stationary state in which an energy cascade, with the same statistical properties of the original system, is clearly detected.

New Universality of Lyapunov Spectra in Hamiltonian Systems

A new universality of Lyapunov spectra {λ_i} is shown for Hamiltonian systems. The universality appears in middle energy regime and is different from another universality which can be reproduced by random matrices in the following two points. One is that the new universality appears in a limited range of large i/N rather than the whole range, where N is degrees of freedom. The other is Lyapunov spectra do not behave linearly while random matrices give linear behavior even on 3D lattice. Quadratic terms with smaller nonlinear terms of potential functions play an intrinsic role in the new universality.

Periodic Orbits, Breaktime and Localization

The main goal of the present paper is to convince that it is feasible to construct a `periodic orbit theory' of localization by extending the idea of classical action correlations. This possibility had been questioned by many researchers in the field of `Quantum Chaos'. Starting from the semiclassical trace formula, we formulate a quantal-classical duality relation that connects the spectral properties of the quantal spectrum to the statistical properties of lengths of periodic orbits. By identifying the classical correlation scale it is possible to extend the semiclassical theory of spectral statistics, in case of a complex systems, beyond the limitations that are implied by the diagonal approximation. We discuss the quantal dynamics of a particle in a disordered system. The various regimes are defined in terms of time-disorder `phase diagram'. As expected, the breaktime may be `disorder limited' rather than `volume limited', leading to localization if it is shorter than the ergodic time. Qualitative agreement with scaling theory of localization in one to three dimensions is demonstrated.

Fluctuation theorem for stochastic dynamics

The fluctuation theorem of Gallavotti and Cohen holds for finite systems undergoing Langevin dynamics. In such a context all non-trivial ergodic theory issues are by-passed, and the theorem takes a particularly simple form. As a particular case, we obtain a nonlinear fluctuation-dissipation theorem valid for equilibrium systems perturbed by arbitrarily strong fields.

Statistical analysis of scars in stadium billiard

In this paper, by using our improved plane wave decomposition method, we study the scars in the eigenfunctions of the stadium billiard from very low state to as high as about the one millionth state. In the systematic searching for scars of various types, we have used the approximate criterion based on the quantization of the classical action along the unstable periodic orbit supporting the scar. We have analized the profile of the integrated probability density along the orbit. We found that the maximal integrated intensity of different types of scars scales in different way with the $\hbar$, which confirms qualitatively and quantitatively the existing theories of scars such as that of Bogomolny (1988) and that of Robnik (1989).

Quantum time-delay in chaotic scattering: a semiclassical approach

We study the universal fluctuations of the Wigner-Smith time delay for systems which exhibit chaotic dynamics in their classical limit. We present a new derivation of the semiclassical relation of the quantum time delay to properties of the set of trapped periodic orbits in the repeller. As an application, we calculate the energy correlator in the crossover regime between preserved and fully broken time reversal symmetry. We discuss the range of validity of our results and compare them with the predictions of random matrix theories.

Mean field theory of critical coupled map lattices

We study the single-site approximation of the Perron-Frobenius equation for a coupled map lattice exhibiting a phase transition at a critical value g_c of the coupling constant. We found that the critical exponents are the same as in the usual mean-field theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Remarkably, the value of g_c is within six percent of the one previously obtained by numerical simulations with asynchronous updating.

On the Accuracy of the Semiclassical Trace Formula

The semiclassical trace formula provides the basic construction from which one derives the semiclassical approximation for the spectrum of quantum systems which are chaotic in the classical limit. When the dimensionality of the system increases, the mean level spacing decreases as $\hbar^d$, while the semiclassical approximation is commonly believed to provide an accuracy of order $\hbar^2$, independently of d. If this were true, the semiclassical trace formula would be limited to systems in d <= 2 only. In the present work we set about to define proper measures of the semiclassical spectral accuracy, and to propose theoretical and numerical evidence to the effect that the semiclassical accuracy, measured in units of the mean level spacing, depends only weakly (if at all) on the dimensionality. Detailed and thorough numerical tests were performed for the Sinai billiard in 2 and 3 dimensions, substantiating the theoretical arguments.

Composed ensembles of random unitary matrices

Composed ensembles of random unitary matrices are defined via products of matrices, each pertaining to a given canonical circular ensemble of Dyson. We investigate statistical properties of spectra of some composed ensembles and demonstrate their physical relevance. We discuss also the methods of generating random matrices distributed according to invariant Haar measure on the orthogonal and unitary group.

Periodic orbit quantization of the Sinai billiard in the small scatterer limit

We consider the semiclassical quantization of the Sinai billiard for disk radii R small compared to the wave length 2 pi/k. Via the application of the periodic orbit theory of diffraction we derive the semiclassical spectral determinant. The limitations of the derived determinant are studied by comparing it to the exact KKR determinant, which we generalize here for the A_1 subspace. With the help of the Ewald resummation method developed for the full KKR determinant we transfer the complex diffractive determinant to a real form. The real zeros of the determinant are the quantum eigenvalues in semiclassical approximation. The essential parameter is the strength of the scatterer c=J_0(kR)/Y_0(kR). Surprisingly, this can take any value between plus and minus infinity within the range of validity of the diffractive approximation kR <<4. We study the statistics exhibited by spectra for fixed values of c. It is Poissonian for |c|=infinity, provided the disk is placed inside a rectangle whose sides obeys some constraints. For c=0 we find a good agreement of the level spacing distribution with GOE, whereas the form factor and two-point correlation function are similar but exhibit larger deviations. By varying the parameter c from 0 to infinity the level statistics interpolates smoothly between these limiting cases.

Berry-Robnik level statistics in a smooth billiard system

Berry-Robnik level spacing distribution is demonstrated clearly in a generic quantized plane billiard for the first time. However, this ultimate semi-classical distribution is found to be valid only for extremely small semi-classical parameter (effective Planck's constant) where the assumption of statistical independence of regular and irregular levels is achieved. For sufficiently larger semiclassical parameter we find (fractional power-law) level repulsion with phenomenological Brody distribution providing an adequate global fit.

Resonant enhanced diffusion in time dependent flow

Explicit examples of scalar enhanced diffusion due to resonances between different transport mechanisms are presented. Their signature is provided by the sharp and narrow peaks observed in the effective diffusivity coefficients and, in the absence of molecular diffusion, by anomalous transport. For the time-dependent flow considered here, resonances arise between their oscillations in time and either molecular diffusion or a mean flow. The effective diffusivities are calculated using multiscale techniques.

Bogomolny's semiclassical transfer operator for rotationally invariant integrable systems

The transfer operator due to Bogomolny provides a convenient method for obtaining a semiclassical approximation to the energy eigenvalues of a quantum system, no matter what the nature of the analogous classical system. In this paper, the method is applied to integrable systems which are rotationally invariant, in two and three dimensions. In two dimensions, the transfer operator is expanded in a Fourier series in the angle variable, while in three dimensions it is expanded in spherical harmonics. In both cases, when the Fourier coefficients are evaluated using the stationary phase approximation, we arrive at the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller (EBK) quantization conditions. The associated Maslov indices are shown to agree with the results calculated by well-known simple rules. The theory is applied to several rotationally invariant systems, including the hydrogen atom and the isotropic harmonic oscillator in two and three dimensions, the circle billiard, a billiard inside a spherical cavity, and a harmonic potential with a singular magnetic flux line.

Energy transport and correlation between two attractors connected by Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

We study numerically time evolution of a system which consists of two attractors connected by Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain. It is found that after sufficiently long time there exits self-consistent large scale structure in the system. The wavelet transform is used to separate the modes in different scales. We found that the nonlinear long wavelength mode propagating along the chain assists the energy transport. Further, all points in the system are found to be correlated. Our results explain satisfactorily why the chaotic behaviour is not enough to ensure the Fourier heat law and the thermal conductivity diverges as it is found recently by Lepri et al (PRL 78, 1897(1997).).

Noisy time series generation by feed-forward networks

We study the properties of a noisy time series generated by a continuous-valued feed-forward network in which the next input vector is determined from past output values. Numerical simulations of a perceptron-type network exhibit the expected broadening of the noise-free attractor, without changing the attractor dimension. We show that the broadening of the attractor due to the noise scales inversely with the size of the system ,$N$, as $1/ \sqrt{N}$. We show both analytically and numerically that the diffusion constant for the phase along the attractor scales inversely with $N$. Hence, phase coherence holds up to a time that scales linearly with the size of the system. We find that the mean first passage time, $t$, to switch between attractors depends on $N$, and the reduced distance from bifurcation $τ$ as $t = a {N \over τ} \exp(b τN^{1/2})$, where $b$ is a constant which depends on the amplitude of the external noise. This result is obtained analytically for small $τ$ and confirmed by numerical simulations.
