Quantal Brownian Motion - Dephasing and Dissipation

We analyze quantal Brownian motion in $d$ dimensions using the unified model for diffusion localization and dissipation, and Feynman-Vernon formalism. At high temperatures the propagator possess a Markovian property and we can write down an equivalent Master equation. Unlike the case of the Zwanzig-Caldeira-Leggett model, genuine quantum mechanical effects manifest themselves due to the disordered nature of the environment. Using Wigner picture of the dynamics we distinguish between two different mechanisms for destruction of coherence. The analysis of dephasing is extended to the low temperature regime by using a semiclassical strategy. Various results are derived for ballistic, chaotic, diffusive, both ergodic and non-ergodic motion. We also analyze loss of coherence at the limit of zero temperature and clarify the limitations of the semiclassical approach. The condition for having coherent effect due to scattering by low-frequency fluctuations is also pointed out. It is interesting that the dephasing rate can be either larger or smaller than the dissipation rate, depending on the physical circumstances.

Scaling and Exotic Regimes in Decaying Burgers Turbulence

We analyze the stochastic scaling laws arising in the invicid limit of the decaying solutions of the Burgers equation. The linear scaling of the velocity structure functions is shown to reflect the domination by shocks of the long-time asymptotics. We exhibit new self-similar statistics of solutions describing phases with diluted shocks. Some speculations are included on the nature of systems whose large time behavior is described by the new statistics.

Intruder States and their Local Effect on Spectral Statistics

The effect on spectral statistics and on the revival probability of intruder states in a random background is analysed numerically and with perturbative methods. For random coupling the intruder does not affect the GOE spectral statistics of the background significantly, while a constant coupling causes very strong correlations at short range with a fourth power dependence of the spectral two-point function at the origin. The revival probability is significantly depressed for constant coupling as compared to random coupling.

Significance of Ghost Orbit Bifurcations in Semiclassical Spectra

Gutzwiller's trace formula for the semiclassical density of states in a chaotic system diverges near bifurcations of periodic orbits, where it must be replaced with uniform approximations. It is well known that, when applying these approximations, complex predecessors of orbits created in the bifurcation ("ghost orbits") can produce pronounced signatures in the semiclassical spectra in the vicinity of the bifurcation. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that these ghost orbits themselves can undergo bifurcations, resulting in complex, nongeneric bifurcation scenarios. We do so by studying an example taken from the Diamagnetic Kepler Problem, viz. the period quadrupling of the balloon orbit. By application of normal form theory we construct an analytic description of the complete bifurcation scenario, which is then used to calculate the pertinent uniform approximation. The ghost orbit bifurcation turns out to produce signatures in the semiclassical spectrum in much the same way as a bifurcation of real orbits would.

Geometric approach to chaos in the classical dynamics of abelian lattice gauge theory

A Riemannian geometrization of dynamics is used to study chaoticity in the classical Hamiltonian dynamics of a U(1) lattice gauge theory. This approach allows one to obtain analytical estimates of the largest Lyapunov exponent in terms of time averages of geometric quantities. These estimates are compared with the results of numerical simulations, and turn out to be very close to the values extrapolated for very large lattice sizes even when the geometric quantities are computed using small lattices. The scaling of the Lyapunov exponent with the energy density is found to be well described by a quadratic power law.

Uniform trace formulae for SU(2) and SO(3) symmetry breaking

We develop uniform approximations for the trace formula for non-integrable systems in which SU(2) symmetry is broken by a non-linear term of the Hamiltonian. As specific examples, we investigate Hénon-Heiles type potentials. Our formalism can also be applied to the breaking of SO(3) symmetry in a three-dimensional cavity with axially-symmetric quadrupole deformation.

Chaotic eigenfunctions in momentum space

We study eigenstates of chaotic billiards in the momentum representation and propose the radially integrated momentum distribution as useful measure to detect localization effects. For the momentum distribution, the radially integrated momentum distribution, and the angular integrated momentum distribution explicit formulae in terms of the normal derivative along the billiard boundary are derived. We present a detailed numerical study for the stadium and the cardioid billiard, which shows in several cases that the radially integrated momentum distribution is a good indicator of localized eigenstates, such as scars, or bouncing ball modes. We also find examples, where the localization is more strongly pronounced in position space than in momentum space, which we discuss in detail. Finally applications and generalizations are discussed.

Sailing the Deep Blue Sea of Decaying Burgers Turbulence

We study Lagrangian trajectories and scalar transport statistics in decaying Burgers turbulence. We choose velocity fields, solutions of the inviscid Burgers equation, whose probability distributions are specified by Kida's statistics. They are time-correlated, not time-reversal invariant and not Gaussian. We discuss in some details the effect of shocks on trajectories and transport equations. We derive the inviscid limit of these equations using a formalism of operators localized on shocks. We compute the probability distribution functions of the trajectories although they do not define Markov processes. As physically expected, these trajectories are statistically well-defined but collapse with probability one at infinite time. We point out that the advected scalars enjoy inverse energy cascades. We also make a few comments on the connection between our computations and persistence problems.

Numerical accuracy of Bogomolny's semiclassical quantization scheme in quantum billiards

We use the semiclassical quantization scheme of Bogomolny to calculate eigenvalues of the Lima\c con quantum billiard corresponding to a conformal map of the circle billiard. We use the entire billiard boundary as the chosen surface of section (SOS) and use a finite approximation for the transfer operator in coordinate space. Computation of the eigenvalues of this matrix combined with a quantization condition, determines a set of semiclassical eigenvalues which are compared with those obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation. The classical dynamics of this billiard system undergoes a smooth transition from integrable (circle) to completely chaotic motion, thus providing a test of Bogomolny's semiclassical method in coordinate space in terms of the morphology of the wavefunction. We analyze the results for billiards which exhibit both soft and hard chaos.

Geometrical approach to the distribution of the zeroes for the Husimi function

We construct a semiclassical expression for the Husimi function of autonomous systems in one degree of freedom, by smoothing with a Gaussian function an expression that captures the essential features of the Wigner function in the semiclassical limit. Our approximation reveals the "center and chord" estructure that the Husimi function inherits from the Wigner function, down to very shallow "valleys", where lie the Husimi zeroes. This explanation for the distribution of zeroes along curves relies on the geometry of the classical torus, rather than the complex analytical properties of the WKB method in the Bargmann representation. We evaluate the zeroes for several examples.

Spectral statistics for quantized skew translations on the torus

We study the spectral statistics for quantized skew translations on the torus, which are ergodic but not mixing for irrational parameters. It is shown explicitly that in this case the level--spacing distribution and other common spectral statistics, like the number variance, do not exist in the semiclassical limit.

Spectral Statistics in Chaotic Systems with Two Identical Connected Cells

Chaotic systems that decompose into two cells connected only by a narrow channel exhibit characteristic deviations of their quantum spectral statistics from the canonical random-matrix ensembles. The equilibration between the cells introduces an additional classical time scale that is manifest also in the spectral form factor. If the two cells are related by a spatial symmetry, the spectrum shows doublets, reflected in the form factor as a positive peak around the Heisenberg time. We combine a semiclassical analysis with an independent random-matrix approach to the doublet splittings to obtain the form factor on all time (energy) scales. Its only free parameter is the characteristic time of exchange between the cells in units of the Heisenberg time.

Fluctuations and Ergodicity of the Form Factor of Quantum Propagators and Random Unitary Matrices

We consider the spectral form factor of random unitary matrices as well as of Floquet matrices of kicked tops. For a typical matrix the time dependence of the form factor looks erratic; only after a local time average over a suitably large time window does a systematic time dependence become manifest. For matrices drawn from the circular unitary ensemble we prove ergodicity: In the limits of large matrix dimension and large time window the local time average has vanishingly small ensemble fluctuations and may be identified with the ensemble average. By numerically diagonalizing Floquet matrices of kicked tops with a globally chaotic classical limit we find the same ergodicity. As a byproduct we find that the traces of random matrices from the circular ensembles behave very much like independent Gaussian random numbers. Again, Floquet matrices of chaotic tops share that universal behavior. It becomes clear that the form factor of chaotic dynamical systems can be fully faithful to random-matrix theory, not only in its locally time-averaged systematic time dependence but also in its fluctuations.

Chaos, Order Statistics and Unstable Periodic Orbits

We present a new method for locating unstable periodic points of one dimensional chaotic maps. This method is based on order statistics. The densities of various maxima of the iterates are discontinuous exactly at unstable periodic points of the map. This is illustrated using logistic map where densities corresponding to a small number of iterates have been obtained in closed form. This technique can be applied to the class of continuous time systems where the successive maxima of the time series behave as if they were generated from a unimodal map. This is demonstrated using Lorenz model.

The Construction of a Quantum Markov Partition

We present a method for constructing a quantum Markov partition. Its elements are obtained by quantizing the characteristic function of the classical rectangles. The result is a set of quantum operators which behave asymptotically as projectors over the classical rectangles except from edge and corner effects. We investigate their spectral properties and different methods of construction. The quantum partition is shown to induce a symbolic decomposition of the quantum evolution operator. In particular, an exact expression for the traces of the propagator is obtained having the same structure as Gutzwiller periodic orbit sum.

Error of semiclassical eigenvalues in the semiclassical limit - An asymptotic analysis of the Sinai billiard

We estimate the error in the semiclassical trace formula for the Sinai billiard under the assumption that the largest source of error is due to Penumbra diffraction, that is diffraction effects for trajectories passing within a distance R O((kR)^(-2/3) to the disk and trajectories being scattered in very forward directions. Here k is the momentum and R the radius of the scatterer. The semiclassical error is estimated by perturbing the Berry-Keating formula. The analysis necessitates an asymptotic analysis of very long periodic orbits. This is obtained within an approximation originally due to Baladi Eckmann and Ruelle. We find that the average error, for sufficiently large value of kR, will exceed the mean level spacing.

Geometrical theory of diffraction and spectral statistics

We investigate the influence of diffraction on the statistics of energy levels in quantum systems with a chaotic classical limit. By applying the geometrical theory of diffraction we show that diffraction on singularities of the potential can lead to modifications in semiclassical approximations for spectral statistics that persist in the semiclassical limit $\hbar \to 0$. This result is obtained by deriving a classical sum rule for trajectories that connect two points in coordinate space.
