Mott criticality and pseudogap in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We study the Mott transition of a mixed Bose-Fermi system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, where the number of (spinless) fermions and bosons adds up to one atom per lattice, n_F+n_B=1. For weak interactions, a Fermi surface coexists with a Bose-Einstein condensate while for strong interaction the system is incompressible but still characterized by a Fermi surface of composite fermions. At the critical point, the spectral function of the fermions, A(k,w), exhibits a pseudo-gapped behavior, rising as |w| at the Fermi momentum, while in the Mott phase it is fully gapped. Taking into account the interaction between the critical modes leads at very low temperatures either to p-wave pairing or the transition is driven weakly first order. The same mechanism should also be important in antiferromagnetic metals with a small Fermi surface.

Super Tonks-Girardeau state in an attractive one-dimensional dipolar gas

The ground state of a one-dimensional (1D) quantum gas of dipoles oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, with a strong 1/x^3 repulsive potential, is studied at low 1D densities $n$. Near contact the dependence of the many-body wave function on the separation x_{jl} of two particles reduces to a two-body wave function Ψ_{rel}(x_{jl}). Immediately after a sudden rotation of the dipoles so that they are parallel to the longitudinal axis, this wave function will still be that of the repulsive potential, but since the potential is now that of the attractive potential, it will not be stationary. It is shown that as nd^2 -> 0 the rate of change of this wave function approaches zero. It follows that for small values of nd^2, this state is metastable and is an analog of the super Tonks-Girardeau state of bosons with a strong zero-range attraction. The dipolar system is equivalent to a spinor Fermi gas with spin $z$ components σ_{\uparrow}=\perp (perpendicular to the longitudinal axis) and σ_{\downarrow}=|| (parallel to the longitudinal axis). A Fermi-Fermi mapping from spinor to spinless Fermi gas followed by the standard 1960 Fermi-Bose mapping reduces the Fermi system to a Bose gas. Potential experiments realizing the sudden spin rotation with ultracold dipolar gases are discussed, and a few salient properties of these states are accurately evaluated by a Monte Carlo method.

Precise characterization of ^6Li Feshbach resonances using trap-sideband resolved RF spectroscopy of weakly bound molecules

We have performed radio-frequency dissociation spectroscopy of weakly bound ^6Li_2 Feshbach molecules using low-density samples of about 30 molecules in an optical dipole trap. Combined with a high magnetic field stability this allows us to resolve the discrete trap levels in the RF dissociation spectra. This novel technique allows the binding energy of Feshbach molecules to be determined with unprecedented precision. We use these measurements as an input for a fit to the ^6Li scattering potential using coupled-channel calculations. From this new potential, we determine the pole positions of the broad ^6Li Feshbach resonances with an accuracy better than 7 \times 10^{-4} of the resonance widths. This eliminates the dominant uncertainty for current precision measurements of the equation of state of strongly interacting Fermi gases. For example, our results imply a corrected value for the Bertsch parameter ξmeasured by Ku et al. [Science 335, 563 (2012)], which is ξ= 0.370(5)(8).

Investigating polaron transitions with polar molecules

We determine the phase diagram of a polaron model with mixed breathing-mode and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger couplings and show that it has two sharp transitions, in contrast to pure models which exhibit one (for Su-Schrieffer-Heeger coupling) or no (for breathing-mode coupling) transition. Our results indicate that the physics of realistic mixed polaron models is much richer than that of simplified models. We then show that ultracold molecules trapped in optical lattices can be used to study precisely this mixed Hamiltonian, and that the relative contributions of the two couplings can be tuned with external electric fields. The parameters of current experimental set-ups place them in the region where one of the transitions occurs. We propose a scheme to measure the polaron dispersion using stimulated Raman spectroscopy.

Itinerant Ferromagnetism in a polarized two-component Fermi gas

We analyze when a repulsively interacting two-component Fermi gas becomes thermodynamically unstable against phase separation. We focus on the strongly polarised limit where the free energy of the homogeneous mixture can be calculated accurately in terms of well-defined quasiparticles, the repulsive polarons. Phase diagrams as a function of polarisation, temperature, mass imbalance, and repulsive polaron energy, as well as scattering length and range parameter are provided. We show that the lifetime of the repulsive polaron increases significantly with the interaction range and the mass of the minority atoms, raising the prospects of detecting the transition to the elusive itinerant ferromagnetic state with ultracold atoms.

Super Efimov effect of resonantly interacting fermions in two dimensions

We study a system of spinless fermions in two dimensions with a short-range interaction fine-tuned to a p-wave resonance. We show that three such fermions form an infinite tower of bound states of orbital angular momentum l=\pm1 and their binding energies obey a universal doubly exponential scaling E_3^{(n)}\propto\exp(-2e^{3πn/4+θ}) at large n. This "super Efimov effect" is found by a renormalization group analysis and confirmed by solving the bound state problem. We also provide an indication that there are l=\pm2 four-body resonances associated with every three-body bound state at E_4^{(n)}\propto\exp(-2e^{3πn/4+θ-0.188}). These universal few-body states may be observed in ultracold atom experiments and should be taken into account in future many-body studies of the system.

Superstripes and the excitation spectrum of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Using Bogoliubov theory we calculate the excitation spectrum of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in the stripe phase. The emergence of a double gapless band structure is pointed out as a key signature of Bose-Einstein condensation and of the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance symmetry. In the long wavelength limit the lower and upper branches exhibit, respectively, a clear spin and density nature. For wave vectors close to the first Brillouin zone, the lower branch acquires an important density character responsible for the divergent behavior of the structure factor and of the static response function, reflecting the occurrence of crystalline order. The sound velocities are calculated as functions of the Raman coupling for excitations propagating orthogonal and parallel to the stripes. Our predictions provide new perspectives for the identification of supersolid phenomena in ultracold atomic gases.

Unconventional magnetism via optical pumping of interacting spin systems

We consider strongly interacting systems of effective spins, subject to dissipative spin-flip processes associated with optical pumping. We predict the existence of novel magnetic phases in the steady-state of this system, which emerge due to the competition between coherent and dissipative processes. Specifically, for strongly anisotropic spin-spin interactions, we find ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, spin-density-wave, and staggered-XY steady states, which are separated by nonequilibrium phase transitions meeting at a Lifshitz point. These transitions are accompanied by quantum correlations, resulting in spin squeezing. Experimental implementations in ultracold atoms and trapped ions are discussed.

Magnetization relaxation and geometric forces in a Bose ferromagnet

We construct the hydrodynamic theory for spin 1/2 Bose gases at arbitrary temperatures. This theory describes the coupling between the magnetization, and the normal and superfluid components of the gas. In particular, our theory contains the geometric forces on the particles that arise from their spin's adiabatic following of the magnetization texture. The phenomenological parameters of the hydrodynamic theory are calculated in the Bogoliubov approximation and using the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation. We consider the topological Hall effect due to the presence of a skyrmion, and show that this effect manifests itself in the collective modes of the system. The dissipative coupling between the magnetization and the normal component is shown to give rise to magnetization relaxation that is fourth order in spatial gradients of the magnetization direction.

Direct measurement of the van der Waals interaction between two Rydberg atoms

We report on the direct measurement of the van der Waals interaction between two isolated, single Rydberg atoms separated by a controlled distance of a few micrometers. By working in a regime where the single-atom Rabi frequency of the laser used for excitation to the Rydberg state is comparable to the interaction energy, we observe a \emph{partial} Rydberg blockade, whereby the time-dependent populations of the various two-atom states exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. A quantitative comparison of the data with a simple model based on the optical Bloch equations allows us to extract the van der Waals energy, and to observe its characteristic $C_6/R^6$ dependence. The magnitude of the measured $C_6$ coefficient agrees well with an \emph{ab-initio} theoretical calculation, and we observe its dramatic increase with the principal quantum number $n$ of the Rydberg state. Our results not only allow to test an important physical law, but also demonstrate a degree of experimental control which opens new perspectives in quantum information processing and quantum simulation using long-range interactions between the atoms.

Fingerprinting Rotons in a Dipolar Condensate: Super-Poissonian Peak in the Atom-Number Fluctuations

We demonstrate that measurements of atom-number fluctuations in a trapped dipolar condensate can reveal the presence of the elusive roton excitation. The key signature is a super-Poissonian peak in the fluctuations as the size of the measurement cell is varied, with the maximum occurring when the size is comparable to the roton wavelength. The magnitude of this roton feature is enhanced with temperature. The variation in fluctuations across the condensate demonstrates that the roton excitations are effectively confined to propagate in the densest central region, realizing a density trapped roton gas. While our main results are based on full numerical solutions of the meanfield equations, we also develop and validate a simple local density theory. Finally, we consider fluctuations measured within a washer-shaped cell which filters out the contribution of modes with nonzero angular momentum and provides a signal sensitive to individual roton modes.

Massive Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

Nicolis and Piazza have recently pointed out the existence of Nambu-Goldstone-like excitations in relativistic systems at finite density, whose gap is exactly determined by the chemical potential and the symmetry algebra. We show that the phenomenon is much more general than anticipated and demonstrate the presence of such modes in a number of systems from (anti)ferromagnets in magnetic field to superfluid phases of quantum chromodynamics. Furthermore, we prove a counting rule for these massive Nambu-Goldstone bosons and construct a low-energy effective Lagrangian that captures their dynamics.

Spinor dynamics in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 thermal Bose gas

We present experimental observations of coherent spin-population oscillations in a cold thermal, Bose gas of spin-1 sodium-23 atoms. The population oscillations in a multi-spatial-mode thermal gas have the same behavior as those observed in a single-spatial-mode antiferromagnetic spinor Bose Einstein condensate. We demonstrate this by showing that the two situations are described by the same dynamical equations, with a factor of two change in the spin-dependent interaction coefficient, which results from the change to particles with distinguishable momentum states in the thermal gas. We compare this theory to the measured spin population evolution after times up to a few hundreds of ms, finding quantitative agreement with the amplitude and period. We also measure the damping time of the oscillations as a function of magnetic field.

Universal damping behavior of dipole oscillations of one-dimensional ultracold gases induced by quantum phase slips

We study superflow decay via quantum phase slips in trapped one-dimensional (1D) quantum gases through dipole oscillations induced by sudden displacement of the trapping potential. We find the relation between the damping rate of the dipole oscillation $G$ and the phase-slip nucleation rate $Γ$ as $G\propto Γ/v$, where $v$ is the flow velocity. This relation allows us to show that damping of 1D Bose gases in optical lattices, which has been extensively studied in experiment, is due to quantum phase slips. It is also found that the damping rate versus the flow velocity obeys the scaling formula for an impurity potential even in the absence of an explicit impurity. We suggest that the damping rate at a finite temperature exhibits a universal crossover behavior upon changing the flow velocity.

Topological charge pumping in a one-dimensional optical lattice

A topological charge pump [1] transfers charge in a quantized fashion. The quantization is stable against the detailed form of the pumping protocols and external noises and shares the same topological origin as the quantum Hall effect. We propose an experiment setup to realize topological charge pumping of cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The quantization of the pumped charge is confirmed by first-principle simulations of the dynamics of uniform and trapped systems. Quantum effects are shown to be crucial for the topological protection of the charge quantization. Finite-temperature and non-adiabatic effect on the experimental observables are discussed. Realization of such a topological charge pump servers as a firm step towards exploring topological states and non-equilibrium dynamics using cold atoms.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.

Loschmidt echo and the many-body orthogonality catastrophe in a qubit-coupled Luttinger liquid

We investigate the many-body generalization of the orthogonality catastrophe by studying the generalized Loschmidt echo of Luttinger liquids (LLs) after a global change of interaction. It decays exponentially with system size and exhibits universal behaviour: the steady state exponent after quenching back and forth n-times between 2 LLs (bang-bang protocol) is 2n-times bigger than that of the adiabatic overlap, and depends only on the initial and final LL parameters. These are corroborated numerically by matrix-product state based methods of the XXZ Heisenberg model. An experimental setup consisting of a hybrid system containing cold atoms and a flux qubit coupled to a Feshbach resonance is proposed to measure the Loschmidt echo using rf spectroscopy or Ramsey interferometry.

Quantum quench in an atomic one-dimensional Ising chain

We study non-equilibrium dynamics for an ensemble of tilted one-dimensional atomic Bose-Hubbard chains after a sudden quench to the vicinity of the transition point of the Ising paramagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. The quench results in coherent oscillations for the orientation of effective Ising spins, detected via oscillations in the number of doubly-occupied lattice sites. We characterize the quench by varying the system parameters. We report significant modification of the tunneling rate induced by interactions and show clear evidence for collective effects in the oscillatory response.
