Singularity problem in f(R) model with non-minimal coupling

We consider the non-minimal coupling between matter and the geometry in the f(R) theory. In the new theory which we established, a new scalar $ψ$ has been defined and we give it a certain stability condition. We intend to take a closer look at the dark energy oscillating behavior in the de-Sitter universe and the matter era, from which we derive the oscillating frequency, and the oscillating condition. More importantly, we present the condition of coupling form that the singularity can be solved. We discuss several specific coupling forms, and find logarithmic coupling with an oscillating period $ΔT\simΔz$ in the matter era $z>4$, can improve singularity in the early universe. The result of numerical calculation verifies our theoretic calculation about the oscillating frequency. Considering two toy models, we find the cosmic evolution in the coupling model is nearly the same as that in the normal f(R) theory when $lna>4$. We also discuss the local tests of the non-minimal coupling f(R) model, and show the constraint on the coupling form.

Outgoing gravitational shock-wave at the inner horizon: The late-time limit of black hole interiors

We investigate the interiors of 3+1 dimensional asymptotically flat charged and rotating black holes as described by observers who fall into the black holes at late times, long after any perturbations of the exterior region have decayed. In the strict limit of late infall times, the initial experiences of such observers are precisely described by the region of the limiting stationary geometry to the past of its inner horizon. However, we argue that late infall-time observers encounter a null shockwave at the location of the would-be outgoing inner horizon. In particular, for spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes we demonstrate that freely-falling observers experience a metric discontinuity across this shock, that is, a gravitational shock-wave. Furthermore, the magnitude of this shock is at least of order unity. A similar phenomenon of metric discontinuity appears to take place at the inner horizon of a generically-perturbed spinning black hole. We compare the properties of this null shockwave singularity with those of the null weak singularity that forms at the Cauchy horizon.

Pulsar timing arrays as imaging gravitational wave telescopes: angular resolution and source (de)confusion

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) will be sensitive to a finite number of gravitational wave (GW) "point" sources (e.g. supermassive black hole binaries). N quiet pulsars with accurately known distances d_{pulsar} can characterize up to 2N/7 distant chirping sources per frequency bin Δf_{gw}=1/T, and localize them with "diffraction limited" precision δθ\gtrsim (1/SNR)(λ_{gw}/d_{pulsar}). Even if the pulsar distances are poorly known, a PTA with F frequency bins can still characterize up to (2N/7)[1-(1/2F)] sources per bin, and the quasi-singular pattern of timing residuals in the vicinity of a GW source still allows the source to be localized quasi-topologically within roughly the smallest quadrilateral of quiet pulsars that encircles it on the sky, down to a limiting resolution δθ\gtrsim (1/SNR) \sqrt{λ_{gw}/d_{pulsar}}. PTAs may be unconfused, even at the lowest frequencies, with matched filtering always appropriate.

Astrophysical Model Selection in Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Theoretical studies in gravitational wave astronomy have mostly focused on the information that can be extracted from individual detections, such as the mass of a binary system and its location in space. Here we consider how the information from multiple detections can be used to constrain astrophysical population models. This seemingly simple problem is made challenging by the high dimensionality and high degree of correlation in the parameter spaces that describe the signals, and by the complexity of the astrophysical models, which can also depend on a large number of parameters, some of which might not be directly constrained by the observations. We present a method for constraining population models using a Hierarchical Bayesian modeling approach which simultaneously infers the source parameters and population model and provides the joint probability distributions for both. We illustrate this approach by considering the constraints that can be placed on population models for galactic white dwarf binaries using a future space based gravitational wave detector. We find that a mission that is able to resolve ~5000 of the shortest period binaries will be able to constrain the population model parameters, including the chirp mass distribution and a characteristic galaxy disk radius to within a few percent. This compares favorably to existing bounds, where electromagnetic observations of stars in the galaxy constrain disk radii to within 20%.

Universal linear in temperature resistivity from black hole superradiance

Observations across many families of unconventional materials motivative the search for robust mechanisms producing linear in temperature d.c. resistivity. BKT quantum phase transitions are commonplace in holographic descriptions of finite density matter, separating critical and ordered phases. We show that at a holographic BKT critical point, if the unstable operator is coupled to the current via irrelevant operators, then a linear contribution to the resistivity is universally obtained. We also obtain broad power law tails in the optical conductivity, that shift spectral weight from the Drude peak as well as interband energy scales. We give a partial realization of this scenario using an Einstein-Maxwell-pseudoscalar bulk theory. The instability is a vectorial mode at nonzero wavevector, which is communicated to the homogeneous current via irrelevant coupling to an ionic lattice.

Analogue Aharonov-Bohm effect in a Lorentz-violating background

In this paper we consider the acoustic black hole metrics obtained from a relativistic fluid under the influence of constant background that violates the Lorentz symmetry to study the analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. We show that the scattering of planar waves by a draining bathtub vortex leads to a modified AB effect and due to the Lorentz symmetry breaking, the phase shift persists even in the limit where the parameters associated with the circulation and draining vanish. In this limit, the Lorentz-violating background forms a conical defect, which is also responsible for the appearance of the analogue AB effect.

Turbulent flows for relativistic conformal fluids in 2+1 dimensions

We demonstrate that relativistic conformal hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions displays a turbulent behaviour which cascades energy to longer wavelengths on both flat and spherical manifolds. Our motivation for this study is to understand the implications for gravitational solutions through the AdS/CFT correspondence. The observed behaviour implies gravitational perturbations of the corresponding black brane/black hole spacetimes (for sufficiently large scales/temperatures) will display a similar cascade towards longer wavelengths.

Multiple Cosmic Collisions and the Microwave Background Power Spectrum

Collisions between cosmic bubbles of different vacua are a generic feature of false vacuum eternal inflation scenarios. While previous studies have focused on the consequences of a single collision event in an observer's past, we begin here an investigation of the more general scenario allowing for many "mild" collisions intersecting our past light cone (and one another). We discuss the general features of multiple collision scenarios and consider their impact on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature power spectrum, treating the collisions perturbatively. In a large class of models, one can approximate a multiple collision scenario as a superposition of individual collision events governed by nearly isotropic and scale-invariant distributions, most appearing to take up less than half of the sky. In this case, the shape of the expected CMB temperature spectrum maintains statistical isotropy and typically features a dramatic increase in power in the low multipoles relative to that of the best-fit $Λ$CDM model, which is in tension particularly with the observed quadrupole. We argue that this predicted spectrum is largely model-independent and can be used to outline features of the underlying statistical distributions of colliding bubbles consistent with CMB temperature measurements.

Ultra Slow-Roll Inflation and the non-Gaussianity Consistency Relation

Ultra slow-roll inflation has recently been used to challenge the non-Gaussianity consistency relation. We show that this inflationary scenario belongs to a one parameter class of models and we study its properties and observational predictions. We demonstrate that the power spectrum remains scale-invariant and that the bi-spectrum is of the local type with fnl=5(3-ns)/4 which, indeed, represents a modification of the consistency relation. However, we also show that the system is unstable and suffers from many physical problems among which is the difficulty to correctly WMAP normalize the model. We conclude that ultra slow-roll inflation remains a very peculiar case, the physical relevance of which is probably not sufficient to call into question the validity of the consistency relation.

Decoherence Problem in Ekpyrotic Phase

Quantum decoherence and the transition to semiclassical behavior during inflation has been extensively considered in the literature. In this paper, we use a simple model to analyze the same process in ekpyrosis. Our result is that the quantum to classical transition would not happen during an ekpyrotic phase even for superhorizon modes, and therefore the fluctuations cannot be interpreted as classical. This implies the prediction of scale-free power spectrum in ekpyrotic/cyclic universe model requires more inspection.

Forecast constraints on cosmic strings from future CMB, pulsar timing and gravitational wave direct detection experiments

We study future observational constraints on cosmic string parameters from various types of next-generation experiments: direct detection of gravitational waves (GWs), pulsar timing array, and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We consider both GW burst and stochastic GW background searches by ground- and space-based interferometers as well as GW background detection in pulsar timing experiments. We also consider cosmic string contributions to the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies. These different types of observations offer independent probes of cosmic strings and may enable us to investigate cosmic string properties if the signature is detected. In this paper, we evaluate the power of future experiments to constrain cosmic string parameters, such as the string tension Gmu, the initial loop size alpha, and the reconnection probability p, by performing Fisher information matrix calculations. We find that combining the information from the different types of observations breaks parameter degeneracies and provides more stringent constraints on the parameters. We also find future space-borne interferometers independently provide a highly precise determination of the parameters.

Area-angular momentum-charge inequality for stable marginally outer trapped surfaces in 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We derive inequalities between the area, the angular momentum and the charges for axisymmetric closed outermost stably marginally outer trapped surfaces, embedded in dynamical and, in general, non-axisymmetric spacetimes satisfying the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-matter equations. In proving the inequalities we assume that the dilaton potential is nonnegative and that the matter energy-momentum tensor satisfies the dominant energy condition.

Near horizon black holes in diverse dimensions and integrable models

The near horizon geometry of extremal rotating black hole in arbitrary dimension possesses SO(2,1)xU(n) symmetry in the special case that all n rotation parameters are equal. We consider a conformal particle associated with such a maximally symmetric configuration and derive from it a new integrable Hamiltonian mechanics with U(n) symmetry. A further reduction of the model is discussed, which is obtained by discarding cyclic variables. A variant of the Higgs oscillator and the Poschl-Teller system show up in four and five dimensions, respectively.

We present a simple "Wald-like" formula for gravitational energy about a constant curvature background spacetime. The formula is derived following the Abbott-Deser-Tekin approach for the definition of conserved asymptotic charges in higher-derivative gravity.

Degeneracy between mass and spin in black-hole-binary waveforms

We explore the degeneracy between mass and spin in gravitational waveforms emitted by black-hole binary coalescences. We focus on spin-aligned waveforms and obtain our results using phenomenological models that were tuned to numerical-relativity simulations. A degeneracy is known for low-mass binaries (particularly neutron-star binaries), where gravitational-wave detectors are sensitive to only the inspiral phase, and the waveform can be modelled by post-Newtonian theory. Here, we consider black-hole binaries, where detectors will also be sensitive to the merger and ringdown, and demonstrate that the degeneracy persists across a broad mass range. At low masses, the degeneracy is between mass ratio and total spin, with chirp mass accurately determined. At higher masses, the degeneracy persists but is not so clearly characterised by constant chirp mass as the merger and ringdown become more significant. We consider the importance of this degeneracy both for performing searches (including searches where only non-spinning templates are used) and in parameter extraction from observed systems. We compare observational capabilities between the early (~2015) and final (2018 onwards) versions of the Advanced LIGO detector.

Charged black holes on the Taub-Bolt instanton

We construct a new exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field equations in five dimensions, which describes a system of two general charged and static black holes sitting at the two turning points of the Taub-bolt instanton. We show that in this case the conical singularities can be completely eliminated and the black hole system remains in static equilibrium. We show how to recover some of the known solutions in particular cases and also obtain as a new solution the extremal double-black hole solution on the Taub-bolt instanton. Finally, we compute the conserved charges and investigate some of the thermodynamic properties of this system.

Interpolation in waveform space: enhancing the accuracy of gravitational waveform families using numerical relativity

Matched-filtering for the identification of compact object mergers in gravitational-wave antenna data involves the comparison of the data stream to a bank of template gravitational waveforms. Typically the template bank is constructed from phenomenological waveform models since these can be evaluated for an arbitrary choice of physical parameters. Recently it has been proposed that singular value decomposition (SVD) can be used to reduce the number of templates required for detection. As we show here, another benefit of SVD is its removal of biases from the phenomenological templates along with a corresponding improvement in their ability to represent waveform signals obtained from numerical relativity (NR) simulations. Using these ideas, we present a method that calibrates a reduced SVD basis of phenomenological waveforms against NR waveforms in order to construct a new waveform approximant with improved accuracy and faithfulness compared to the original phenomenological model. The new waveform family is given numerically through the interpolation of the projection coefficients of NR waveforms expanded onto the reduced basis and provides a generalized scheme for enhancing phenomenological models.
